Simon Stalenhag's Parking Lot Scene in 3D

Link to the animated version at the end of the description... Simon Stålenhag is an awesome artist from Sweden that turns mundane Swedish landscapes into sci-fi masterpieces. You can find a lot of his drawings on his blog, including close ups: www.simonstalenhag.se/ You can also buy his books from his blog website!

The Parking Lot scene especially is one of my favourite artworks from Simon Stålenhag, so naturally it was great fun recreating it in blender and a very good exercise for moody lighting in EEVEE. Making it come even more alive with animations was a great challenge, you can find the link to the moving and animated version at the end of the description, I hope it makes it even better than just the still image. Most of Simon's painting have great lighting and a dark mood supported by the lights, all his paintings are excellent lighting studies. The total emptiness and vastness of space with the one person being as alone as you can be but still being content, hypnotized and trapped in some weird virtual reality is a gloomy prophecy in itself. He didn't even bring a car to come here and zone out! The classic but really well executed warm /// cold, orange /// cyan contrast framed by simple plants and just darkness works so well it can't get better. And even Simon Stålenhag realized that moths add realism to anything!

Don't trip over the Black Stripes

As swirly and warping as it might look, this is all flat ground. the view into the distance of this perfect loop offers some glimpse into the endless realm of your own imagination while the close up lets you soak in that setting sun and enjoy how it reflects on the cobblestone stripe on the ground.

Browse around this blog and you will find a lot of black and white striped op-art animations that twiggle your perception and bend your reality. So of course after finding this great collection of black and white striped images on deviant art ( https://www.deviantart.com/erdbeersternchen/journal/Stripelicious-Superfeature-842067462 ) I was very impressed with the 6th picture in the collection by chocomalk. So I just had to try to recreate this great groundwork in blender and give it my own spin by making a camerflight over it and looping it seamless.

And at the same time this helps me practise texturing (there is no swirly cobblestone texture for download anywhere on the internet for sure) and get into micropolygon displacement, which makes the cobblestones in this surreal and repetitive arrangement look convincingly realistic.
