woke up thinking about trans mac…

luther let him transition as a child because he wanted a son instead of a daughter anyway, so it benefits him as well as mac, but it’s all under the circumstances that it’s very hush hush and nobody finds out so that “shame” isn’t brought to their family

mac is incredibly performatively hyper-masculine because he feels the need to compensate for being born in a girl’s body

he pretends not to be gay because in his and luther’s mind, being trans is “bad enough” as it is. he was also taught to associate being gay with femininity

gets hormones/surgery with the money he makes dealing weed at high school and whilst working at the ice rink

literally has a therapist tell him he has body dysmorphia, but specifically in the sense that he worries about being too small or frail… i.e, too feminine, not masculine enough. sounds like gender dysphoria to me, pal

“button in a fur coat” = metoidioplasty or clit growth

charlie knows because he’s known charlie for the longest and as a younger kid there’s only so much he could keep secret from his best friend, but charlie forgets that mac was born female by frying his brains with glue and other inhalants

going really hard on the homophobia to compensate for being trans

we only see mac get with one other person in the whole show that lasts more than a hasty hook up… carmen. he sought her out, protested just enough to make him look like he’s weirded out by her being trans, but actually, is the whole reason he sought her out in the first place. if he can’t allow himself to be gay, then then second best option after that is to be with another trans person, somebody who will at the very least understand

the internalised transphobia ends up becoming externalised, ending their relationship. he focuses on the fact that she’s pre-op and doesn’t care to hide it that much, because he’s deep down, envious that she doesn’t hide being trans whilst he’s spent his whole life living in shame and fear that people would find out

when he does come out as gay, it takes a while to breach the topic with luther. before he comes out to him, he spends ages getting absolutely shredded, aka masculine, the most physically masculine he can possibly get himself. only then can he stand in front of his father and say that he’s gay — because he needs to make up for the associated femininity with being gay when it’s in front of him. either way, luther stands up and leaves, so mac stops holding onto the masculine front and allows himself to curl up into a woman’s lap and cry for (i think) the only time on screen

claiming to be a top so valiantly because he associates getting fucked and bottoming with “being the woman”, even if he isn’t a top deep down. he stops pretending to be a top after coming out to and losing luther (the pressure to rid himself of femininity)

also i swear to god. i swear to god he has visible scars in global warming.

Ngl I'm thinking about the fact that Mac was actually interested in Carmen, even after he found out she was trans.

Mac literally did research into bottom surgery and how it works. He put time and effort into learning about anatomy and probably even more into hormone treatment! Mac is also notably religious! During the time she's introduced, trans people were treated way worse than they are now. So a religious guy (who is ableit a repressed closeted gay with a splash of internalized homophobia low-key) being into a trans woman while knowing she's trans is such a huge thing

Sunny typical casual slurs and peanut gallery aside, so far where I am in the series (S5E12) they've treated Carmen really well as a character. Like... Genuinely she's one of my favorite representations of trans women in media. She's unapologetically a woman who is proud of being trans, temporarily with a man who is obviously conflicted slightly but still cares somewhat about her (she's with her husband now where I'm at, but you know what I mean). He cares enough to keep her around and learn about her surgeries.

Also? Literally no character calls her by he/him. Literally none. It shocked me that they didn't have Frank he/him her. They make a point to be like "no. She's just a woman who temporarily had a dick" it feels like. Her huge dick is the only thing they genuinely poke at towards her being trans. And Mac not wanting to be open about being with her seems to stem from how his friends will react and probably internalized homophobia since we know he ends up coming out as gay

Idk guys. I think about Mac and Carmen a lot. I know she's one of the ones who come out fine in the end. And I just... I love that. RCG really popped off with her character

mac meeting someone and impulsively deciding he's going to get married and he excitedly tells the gang and dennis has to break the news to him that he can't get married cause technically he's already married and mac is like what the fuck are you talking about and dennis is like yeeeaaa remember when frank "adopted" you so we could go on family fight? well turns out you can't adopt a grown man so what actually happened is you legally became his son in law by marrying one of his kids, those were the papers you signed. and mac nearly throws up like "are you saying im married to dee??" and dennis is like "errr not exactly" with dee saying "there's no way in hell i was letting that happen" and mac goes "so charlie? hell yea dude married bros" and charlie goes "no, Frank's not my dad legally, he's not even my dad biologically" and dennis goes "well I'd say jury's still out on that one, you and shelley never got a chance to do a dna test" and Charlie's like "well yea but i already threw him down a mountain in our family tradition so i think that settles it like biologically cause traditions get passed down through blood" and dee goes "charlie that's not how any of that works" and they start arguing and mac has to interrupt them once the dots connects in his brain and he's like "shut up!!! so you're saying...dennis is my husband? im dennis's husband?" and dennis cringes and he's like "well you don't have to say it like that, we were gonna get separated after but turns out it's better for tax purposes. frank explains it better than i can, it doesn't mean anything, it's only a legal document" but mac can't and won't hear him he's on cloud nine like "omg we're married, we should have a wedding, we should renew our vows" and dennis is just seething like "we're not renewing anything we're not husbands it's just a legal thing" and dee goes "well what else do you call living together with shared finances for over two decades. you guys are still sleeping in that inflatable bed together, you're telling me that's not being married?" and charlie goes "actually yea dennis why are you guys sleeping in the same bed still? and weren't you guys like in an online relationship for months when you did the johnny thing with the vibrating anal beads? " and mac hasn't even processed the johnny thing really but his gears are turning now like "if you were johnny...why catfish me why not just ask me to run errands for you, i would have done it like any good husband, i would be the best husband bro" and dennis yells "JUST MOVE PAST IT" and then a voice comes up that goes "all of that's kinda hard to move past actually" and camera turns to reveal mac's boytoy boyfriend who he was planning on getting married to has been listening the whole time and dennis goes "who the fuck is this?" and mac goes "oh, this is my fiance, Chad. Chad, this is my ~husband~, Dennis" and Chad goes "yea mac i don't think this is gonna work out, good luck with...all of that" and he leaves and mac runs after him like Chad Wait! but it doesn't work so he goes back all annoyed that the gang ran off his boytoy and dennis is still fuming at the whole thing so they both say they want a divorce. (frank refuses cause it's too much of a hassle due to dennis legally owning some of wolfcola for tax evation purposes and he tells them if they get a divorce he'll stop paying their rent so they stay married but nothing about their dynamic changes at all except if mac mentions their marriage or refers to them as husbands dennis will scratch him (which makes mac want to do it more) then they go sleep in the same bed together)
