25 Apps Every College Student Should Have
Submitted by Campus Ambassador, Shanna Farley  ///   University of Northern Colorado
A new year has begun! Along with it new challenges and rewards are sure to come - this is especially true when you are trying to navigate through your college years. Luckily the college students of today live in a world where apps exist. Apps can do so much more than flip a bunch of angry birds across the screen or crush all the candies. They can help you reach your personal life goals and at times can be complete lifesavers. From a real student in the trenches, this is a list of apps that every college student should have programmed into their phones. The best part is, they are absolutely free!
Educational Aids
StudyBlue: This is an app that allows you to create virtual flashcards on any subject and allows you to borrow flash cards from other students. This app is great because you can just open it up at any time and flip through the virtual deck you have created for yourself.
Evernote: Create notes, to-do lists, set reminders, take photos, and record audio. This app is there to keep you on the track to success and makes sure you never forget.
Easy Bib: Doing your work cited is often tedious and at times confusing, with Easy Bib all that is now a thing of the past. Type in any book, website, film and Easy Bib will give you the right citation. You can even scan the barcode of your book to generate the correct citation.
Algeo Graphing Calculator: Never have to worry about being without your graphing calculator. This app can do just about anything you would ever need from a graphing calculator and from what I’ve seen it’s one of the best on the market.
Google Drive: Use this app to store all those important documents you’ll be accumulating.
(You’ll be sure to be the top of the class with the Algeo Graphing Calculator)
Daily Life Aids
Venmo: Send payments to your friends, roommate or whoever. You can now pay someone back at any time and any place without any of the hassle. Co-Ed Supply sent Venmo promo cards a few months ago!
Viber: Contact those you miss from across the globe without all those pesky fees.
Everest: Use this app to keep track of any personal life goals you have. It can be anything from traveling across Europe to losing those few extra pounds. This app helps you break down the steps to reach that goal and lets you seek out advice when you need it.
Cam Scanner: Allows you to use your camera phone as a scanner. This is very helpful for copying notes from a missed class.
Lyft: Need a ride to the party or the concert of the year, but have no transportation of your own? With this app you can contact one of Lyft’s drivers to pick you up and get you there safely.  The fees are very competitive and sadly the app is mainly designed for popular U.S. cities.
Assistant:  Just because you’re not in the big leagues quite yet, doesn’t mean you can’t have your own personal assistant.  The rest of your apps will be envious of this one because there is so much it can do. It can post memos, keep track of your schedule, post on your social networks, give you suggestions based on your likes, and it can even follow specific commands directly related to your phone. It’s an app completely personalized to you and it even comes in different languages.
Your School’s Personal App: This is a big one many students forget. Keep in the loop with important dates or special events with you school’s app or apps.
(Your personal assistant knows what is needed to get you through your day)
Money Saving Aids
Ibotta: A great app for when you are going shopping. Get paid for buying the items right on your grocery list. This app allows you to earn back a portion of an item you have already paid and they are always expending, so now you can even earn money back for going to new movies.
Retailmenot: Finds any online discounts for any store at a click of a button. It can even generate coupons for in store purchases as well.
Wrapp: Send free gift cards or offers to your friends and receive them as well. You can also send purchased gift cards as well. Some great offers include $6 for H&M, $5 for David’s Cookies and many more. Always  great gifts to give when you are a little low cash.
Plink: Get rewarded for places you already make purchases to like Regal Cinemas, Burger King, Panda Express, Dunkin Donut, and more. All you have to do is connect your account to a card and rack up points for purchases. You can redeem your points to get gift cards from Amazon, Walmart and more.
Gas Buddy:  A penny saved is a penny earned and that is certainly the case with this app. You can track down which gas stations in your area have the cheapest prices for gas.
Fancy Hands, Task Rabbit, Agent Anything and Ask Sunday: Earn some extra cash by running errands or being someone’s personal assistant. These apps are filled with individuals posting certain tasks to do for a price. These tasks can range from setting up a restaurant reservation to picking up a much wanted item. All these apps seem to be localized, so you’ll have to check which ones are for your area.
(Get paid for grocery shopping with Ibotta)
Leisure Aids
Mixology: Impress everyone at any get together with your bar tending skills and you’ll sure to be the life of any party. This app is like a bar tending school in your pocket. (Must be 17 or older to download)
Spotify: In the war of free streaming music apps, I’m on the side of Spotify. I love that it allows you to shuffle playlists you’ve made yourself or playlists others have made and you can even listen to the radio. They also rarely play those pesky advertisements.
Project Gutenberg: Gain access to a large range of literature for free. This app can be useful for educational pursuits or leisure reading.
Flixter: Watch movies from your own collection or free films provided by Flixter. You can build a descent virtual library to no or very little cost.
Evenster: This app allows you to track events in your area, so you can be sure there is always something to do.
Duolingo: A game that is getting popular by the minute. Learn a new language or challenge your language skills with this great app. Languages included: Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, and English.
(Brush up on your language skills with the Duolingo app)
BONUS!
Zombies, Run!: Okay, this one isn’t a freebie, but with all the money you have saved from other apps it will be well worth your while. It’s an interactive running that allows you to play a game and listen to music at the same time. The concept is that you have to run to survive the zombie apocalypse and g complete little missions along the way. This app will be sure to keep you motivated on your resolution for a new you.
(All apps can be found on Google Play or the Apple app Store)

2014 mobile trends: Lightweight engagement
Engagement is a hugely important concept in the mobile world. While most discussions in the industry still focus on discovery, or getting people to download an app, an arguably larger opportunity lies in driving repeatable behavior post-install. Apps that solve the engagement challenge not only make more money, they also decrease their reliance on paid marketing and improve their visibility in app stores.
Unfortunately, building an engaging product is not easy. Just to stay top of mind among mobile users, apps must constantly fight the structural challenges of the ecosystem, from poor contextual presentation on phone screens to external distractions that make usage behaviors erratic and unpredictable. There’s also very little consensus about what engagement means and which metrics should define success, as these vary widely by industry and use case.
As the competition in mobile intensifies in 2014 (there are now 1MM+ apps in both the App Store and Google Play), this situation will only get worse. More apps than ever before will fight for the same, finite time that consumers spend on their devices (141 minutes/day), and most of them will fail. To succeed, they’ll have to move beyond the black-and-white reality of time spent in app, MAUs and 30-day retention rates and find new ways to engage their audience.
Tumblr media
In 2014, apps will adopt a lightweight approach to user engagement
One promising solution will be the notion of lightweight engagement. Rather than expecting people to spend a lot of time within the app experience, apps will simplify their interactions into smaller chunks and look to channels outside the app to minimize the burden on the end user. Here are a few ways that this trend will come to life.
1) Apps that run in the background There’s a common assumption that mobile engagement requires an app open. But what if it does not? What if apps provided the majority of their value by running in the background and collecting information on our devices?
Semil Shah explored this point in a detailed blog post just a few weeks ago, using examples of Heydey and Memoir to illustrate his point. These apps work quietly in the background to create beautiful journals of a user’s activity, stitching together data such as location, camera roll photos and updates from social networks. The only upfront commitment is granting the app access to the data in the first place and connecting with various social networks. People can either access the data at their leisure or receive notifications about important updates.
Provided there is enough passive value in these apps, people will keep them installed, and over time this may lead to more regular, time-intensive engagement. In the meantime, they will build business value by collecting a treasure trove of personal information and gaining intimate access to the end user. Expect to see more of these businesses in 2014.
2) Apps that engage via notifications Notifications are typically considered tools for re-engagement, or bringing people back into an app. But what if apps spent more time engaging people directly in the notifications, minimizing the need for an app open? A few ecosystem changes would be necessary to make this a reality, including:
The ability to send rich notifications with images, better formatting and more data
A more interactive notification center that gives users the ability to take actions on data
A unified format for rich notifications on the home screen
More detailed analytics on notifications
Most of the innovation in notifications has been happening on Android in the past year, but there is still an opportunity to improve and standardize their interfaces. It’s likely that the next wave of notifications will adopt a card-based format, which Google Now already uses to present contextual data, along with gestures that minimize time spent interacting. While apps won’t be replaced - especially given Apple and Google’s vested interest in their ecosystems - I expect a greater number of interactions to happen within the notifications they send.
3) Apps that decentralize engagement App marketers have done an exceptionally poor job at engaging their users outside the app experience. In fact, they rarely think beyond push notifications when developing a plan to onboard users or build a regular dialogue. Part of the issue is awareness about the available tools, while the other is a lack of resources to develop engaging marketing campaigns.
The rise of mobile relationship management (MRM) platforms like Appboy and Localytics, paired with better access to mobile marketing talent, will address this challenge in 2014. Apps will learn to decentralize their engagement efforts across channels like SMS, mobile email, social media and even the mobile web, and in doing so break the experience into smaller, bite-size chunks. This will not only improve engagement rates through better distribution, but also increase the total amount of attention they can vie for.
Furthermore, improvements in the area of deep-linking to specific app pages will help to connect apps with external marketing channels. We can already see happening with the smart use of URIs in mobile emails and Twitter’s cards. There are still a lot of silos in the ecosystem, however, so it will be interesting to see how much Apple and Google will open their protocols.
4) Apps that leverage small interfaces As wearable technology becomes more ubiquitous, the mobile ecosystem is fragmenting into a variety of small form factors and interfaces. Given their physical constraints, these interfaces will not replace, but rather complement existing mobile devices through quick access to information and simple commands.
The implication of wearables to mobile engagement is clear: it needs to simple and lightweight. Think about what’s realistic on a 1.5x1.5" screen of a smartwatch. While a tap and swipe both make sense, a pinch-to-zoom and double click may not. Even if a variety of touch-free interactions gain tractions, apps will be still forced to prioritize two things:
The information they convey to the end user
The actions they want the end user to take (eg yes / no / remind me later)
This is a big shift in mentality from mobile devices as smartphones, which offer an fairly immersive experience and only seem to be growing in size. In the context of small interfaces, app developers will need to simplify engagement and extract value from even the smallest glances and taps.
SUMMARY Engagement was, is and will continue to be a big challenge for mobile in 2014. Over time, it will only get worse, as a growing number of companies vie for a finite amount of consumer attention. To combat this problem, app developers will look for ways to minimize the engagement burden on their end users and give them a more lightweight experience. They will do this by running apps in the background, engaging via notifications, decentralizing engagement and leveraging small interfaces.
While the deep, immersive engagement in mobile will always exist, the requirement to open an app just to derive value will soon disappear.

What You Should Know About Web Design
Tumblr media
First impressions are everything so making a good one is extremely important. The design of your website is the first thing a visitor sees so it’s important to make it the best you can. In order to ensure you get the design just right, follow the advice in the article below.
The internet is all about speed. Visitors want to be able to access a website quickly so be sure your site loads easily. Internet users will lose interest extremely quickly if they have to wait a few minutes for your site to load.
Simple navigation is key. Customers will quickly leave a site that is difficult to navigate through. To make it easier for internet users to navigate your site, include a drop down menu and display links where they can be easily found. You should also be sure that each page of your site has a link back to the main pages so they can find their way no matter how deep into the site they are.
If your site is large and contains numerous pages, you should include a search function for your users. The best place for a search box is the upper right of the site’s home page. Both Google and FreeFind offer search functions for your site, your users will thank you.
Your site must always have cancellation and subscription options for your users. If you do not allow your visitors to back-out of an action like filling out forms or registering for email notifications and newsletters, they will feel forced and lead them elsewhere.
Many people believe that software’s needed to create a good website are extremely expensive. This couldn’t be more false. There are many free software’s that you can use to create a professional looking website. You may have to search a little harder to find these tools, but it will be worth it.
Like previously stated the design is very important. If you are stuck on what color your site’s background should be, whit is always a good chose. Having a white background will make it easier for users to read your content and will give your site a more professional look. If the design is too cluttered your site will come across as amateur which will leave them to believe that your company is as well. Simplicity is key.
Website design is extremely important and can be one of the most important factors that help users decide whether or not they should continue browsing your website. If you follow the tips you gave learned in this article you will be sure to have a layout that works for both you and your users. Like previously stated, first impressions are everything, make sure the one you leave is a good one.
To ensure your website design is the best it can possibly be consider hiring a web design company to help you. Maxburst is a Long Island based firm that provides professional web-based services, ranging from custom web designs to fully functional dynamic rich websites.

Tips for making your poetry SEO friendly
-Repeat keywords like “beauty, truth.”
-Reference other, more popular poems in the first line of your poem.
-Engage with your readers directly by opening with a rhetorical question like “shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?”  This will lead to longer comment threads on Facebook as your audience argues over what the answer is.
-Think of what people might already be searching, and use those terms first. (e.g. Howl: “I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness…” could be “Hysterical naked madness…”)
-Make sure metaphors are clearly metaphorical so people don’t feel like they were “click baited” into reading a poem where it seemed like someone literally died rather than someone’s soul figuratively dying. It will hurt you in the long run.
-Make the poem good! People like good content, so only put out your best poetry.
-Always reference another of your own poems somewhere in your poem and hyperlink it. It’s meta and post-modern and great strategy for keeping readers on your site and reading more of your work!
-Include at least one Kardashian in your poem.
