This is what an evil vegan megacorporation looks like 4 years in after a long day of Parmageddoning. There's no justice, it's just us - and a handful of friends that help us get by trying to pull off wearing all the hats that fully staffed and bankrolled companies do: production, logistics, food science, importing/exporting, legal mumbo jumbo, art direction and everything else. On little sleep, little money and constant uncertainty. For love of an ethic, in a moment where veganism is exploding but (in a related story) where independent DIY vegan culture is being steamrolled by big money, a gentrified and apolitical new narrative and the ire of entitled old monopolies, eager to co-opt a consumer sea change (and depressingly good at it). To all our friends with vegan businesses out there, many of which are blinking out left and right under the strain, we love you for it. And all you beautiful and stoked vegan people out there, don't be fooled by the hastily revamped marketing plans of the industries you're trying to walk away from. Buy vegan things from vegan companies. Keep veganism vegan. Community, not competition. Keep the faith, we're not there yet.

Ok, I don't get starstruck too often but when you realize you're in the company of greatness and involuntarily start punishing them from their back seat about individual menu items, when you're being outfitted with baked goods way out of your league and putting shout outs to her vegan Butterfingers (pictured) in the middle of your band's This Is Hardcore set, you're there. I never want to take the politics out of this. I don't care if that's how Veganism 2017 prefers it, or if it's alienating to mix strong opinions with business practice. Veganism is a protest and a boycott and we still have a long way to go in that department, especially as Big Money follows consumers here to reroute their attempts to take control of what realities their money goes to and doesn't. This case of Parmageddon is way overdue to get in the hands of these great folks from Sea Shepherd, who put their asses on the line in the middle of nowhere to do what world governments and authorities consciously fail to do despite their own laws around illegal fishing and poaching. We all have different comfort levels and any way that we contribute to the fight (most simply with our consumer choices) matters and makes a difference. But this one's for all the sea, land and air shepherds out there squaring off in first person. Direct Action, still a thing. Here's to the day that no one HAS to.
