Ways to Solarpunk-up your neighborhood

The "punk" part of solarpunk is, of course, defying societal norms and governmental laws in the name of building a better future.

Isee a lot of great things happening, such as community gardens, climate protests and more and more people going vegetarian/vegan etc. I took a walk around my neighborhood yesterday to find things that I like about my town. I love to see people planting fruit trees in their garden. I love the little shops in their driveway/front yard with their harvested crops, homemade jam, fruit juice etc.

Public art

I love this artist, who, every few weeks, puts up a new string art piece. It's weird and I doubt the local government likes it. I'm friends with the artist's neighbor, and she says that they want to "decorate the town with art". That's a pretty punk statement that I definitely can get behind. It certainly is fun to see what the artist has come up with every time I walk past.

Mini libraries

Mini libraries can be found in every neighborhood. People place them in their front yard. This one has a little bench with it too. I love it so much. Access to free books, all day, everyday, almost everywhere. Tell me that isn't such a solarpunk initiative. They've sprouted up the last decade like weeds and I couldn't be happier.

Give & take cabinet

What's a better way to show your community you care about them than a give & take cabinet. Clothes, shoes dishes, menstrual items, shampoo and more. I'm planning on tidying up this cabinet soon and adding some stuff of my own. As someone who is pretty tight on money myself, I'm very happy to see a way I can get stuff I need if I'm in a pitch.

If you want you can give it a twist, you could consider making a tools library or a food cabinet as well.

Getting Started ⛳️

Woooooo — hello again!

'Tis I, Scribble, and I'm here to get this party started! First off, let's start with...

A PLAN

...yeah I know... planning isn't my strong suit either. But I'll be blunt with you — do write a story (any story!) you really, really need a plan. And a plot (we'll get to that later!)

For me, my plan is to create a simultaneous webcomic and webnovel (collectively a webstory) so that will be my main focus here. My target platforms are mostly Wattpad (for the novel) and Webtoon (for the comics) so most of the examples I'll use will be drawn from those bases.

I've already published one book, a middle-school fantasy novel, and that took me 5 years. Yep, FIVE YEARS. So, embarking on this, my first order is to create a gameplan.

When considering starting a project of this size (aka, a story that you're planning to share with the whole world) it's a good idea to start thinking about....

💸 INVESTMENT:

What are you willing to put into this story? Time, energy, money? (I'm a notorious cheapskate, so most of the tips I'll include here are for free things, but money is still a thing to consider.) Making a story is a BIG descion, so going forwards, remember to set boundaries for yourself, especially in regards to...

⏳ TIME and LENGTH:

Most webnovels (like Kindle Vellas) and webcomics (such as WEBTOON Originals) publish on a weekly basis, which seems like the average balance between audience engagement and the time to takes for the author to create a chapter (whether written or graphic), so use that as your starting point. If you release an chapter week for an entire year, that's about 52 chapters. 😬 If you publish every two weeks (which might be a better choice for hobbyists) that's only 26 chapters in an entire year. To put that in perspective, the popular Webtoon, Hooky, has around 200 episodes (each about 40-60 "panels") and took 5 years to complete. The WEBTOON UnOrdinary is 7 years in the making with 325 episodes to date. 🤯 Personally, my time/length is probably going to be somewhere around 30 episodes, hopefully published on a weekly basis. So when considering the amount of time you're willingly to put into your story, make sure have a clear...

🎯END GOAL:

For many Wattpad writers, the dream is print publication or tv-show adaptation (like Light as a Feather) or becoming a Paid Story, while many Webtoon artists dearest wish is to be picked up as an Original (which might also result in print/tv deals, as in the case of True Beauty). Ironically, many Wattpad novels have recently started getting their own Webtoon editions (like Float and Chasing Red) Of course, all these opportunities are decided at the whims of the great overlords (aka, the Editors! ✨)

So while those are perfectly good dreams to strive for, it's a good idea to set some goals you can achieve on your own, such as a follower count or a successful merch store. There are plenty of popular and sucessful Wattpad stories and Webtoons with large followings (such as Goth Girl and the Jock, or The Little Trashmaid) which have never been featured. Setting goals like this can help reduce disapointment, burnout, and provide a sense of clarity and security as you embark on your journey! 😉 For me, I'm hoping to make it big as a featured creator, but my "Plan B" is a decent number of followers and a steady monthly income from Patreon and ad revenue. Nothing stellar, but it's a goal I think is feasible, and something I will be satisfied with. As with the time and length, another major component is the...

⚖️ WORKLOAD:

Of course, as an independent writer, it's all up to us how much work we want to put into something. However, there are some industry specs that are good to keep in mind. Wattpad and Kindle Vella recommend around 1,000 - 5,000 words, so consider how long that will take to write (including rough drafts and editing). To compete with Webtoon Originals, you'll need somewhere around 50 panels, plus the storyline and dialogue. I'll get to workload pacing later, but it's something worthy of consideration early on. 🎨 STYLE:

While we should always be striving to do our best, it's essential that your webnovel/comic have a clear, consistent style that you can easily produce on a regular schedule. So, with that in mind, settle on a writing style that is clean, concise and quick. Don't spend all week polishing a flowery piece of prose, and then never have time to edit. ( Editing is ESSENTIAL, trust me!) but also don't churn out a crappy, typo-ridden chapter in 30 minutes. Writing quality can make or break your story, it doesn't matter how great your characters or storyline is, if it is hard to read, people won't read it. Same with art for a webcomic. Later on, I will share some tips and tricks to help you improve and develop a good writing/art style, but for now, I think we're good!

when I saw the Barbie movie, I came out crying bc obv. outside the theatre was a woman, probably my mom’s age, who saw me.

and she asked me what was wrong. and I just burst into tears and she gave me the biggest hug in the world.

And I think that’s what the movie was about; realizing that life is hard, but we’re all living it.

I’m still on the fence about whether this woman was real or some sort of spirit/angel/fairy that took the form of a kind lady to make sure everything was ok down on earth, but either way it reminded me that being kind and being sensitive isn’t a weakness.

it’s what makes the world go around.
