Oh how bored out of his mind Nick was. With his cheek resting on his palm and his eyes lazily following the professor’s writing on the board, Nick questioned his life choices.
Nick found the Australian weather moist and annoying, he also found history class pretty boring. He liked working with his hands more, plus he didn’t like language based courses or listening type of work. Nick wanted to use his hands.
The blond leaned down his head on the long wooden desk, banging his forehead softly in hopes of transporting himself out of the room.
──────────────────── · 𖥸 · ───────────────────
"—Meuro!" Nick found himself jolted out of his sleep, standing up involuntarily in case of emergency. He glanced quickly around the room to fid his classmates featuring giggles and smug stares.
"Meuro." The professor called again, a frustrated and angered expression clear on his face. "Since you know the material front and back that you decide to sleep through my lesson, why don't you come down here and teach the class."
The blond only gulped, shame washing over him. He could only look down in embarrassment, fiddling with his fingers. What would his mom say? She'd defiantly scold him thoroughly.
"Sit down. Don't let me catch you aga—" The ear bleading-ly loud ringtone jolted everyone in the room. The lyrics from a 90's rap song filled the tension between the hitory teacher and Nick as they held heavy eye contact. "I've— Its—" The blond stuttered as he reached for his pocket. It must've been important if someone was calling him in the middle of a lecture.
"Oh look." Nick raised the phone chuckling slightly. "It my mom," he lied through his teeth as he quickly shoved his supplies in his back, stumbling around the lecture room to the exit. "Same time next week?" Nick smiled before pressing the phone to his ear and waving a goodbye to the now fuming man at the front of the classroom.
──────────────────── · 𖥸 · ───────────────────
"Hi!" Nick took a deep breath, looking around the empty halls. He'd made a run for it before the teacher pulled him back in, answering in the call finally after a few rings. "Hi." The other female greeted, clearing her throat.
"It's Anaki from—" "Yeah yeah." Nick nodded quickly even though the woman on the other end of the line couldn't see. "I remember. How—" he cleared his voice. "How are you." the pause was short before the brunette replied with a 'could be better.'
"Well um, your bikes all fixed up. But I want you to give it a trail run first just to make sure its tuned to you." "Oh, yeah yeah. of course. I'm free." Nick dismissed quickly, looking down at his watch. He was defiantly not free. "Now?" Anaki asked confused. Nick nodded quickly with a shrug. He waited another few seconds before realizing she couldn't see him.
"Yeah, I'm— n—now is a great time." He breathed in feeling his heart beat against his chest. "I don't have anything going on— right now."
"Okay, uh, give me 10 minutes. The track next to beach."
──────────────────── · 𖥸 · ───────────────────
Nick wheezed in a breath as he finally stopped running. He leaned his hands on his knees, wiping his sweat from his face, too out of breath to speak a greeting. Anaki looked at him confused, the illumination from her phone reflecting in her unamused eyes.
“I’m here.” He huffed, standing up and giving an awkward wave.
“I couldn’t tell.” The brunette replied sarcastically as she stood up from the dirt. “You have your equipment?” The boy pulled his back pack of his shoulders, holding it up in yes.
Anaki leaned on one leg, watching the boy pull on his gloves and helmet. “Don’t do anything stupid or dangerous.”
“Got it.” The blond nodded, putting the visor over his eyes as he mounted his motor and revved it to life.
“It might not be one hundred adjusted so tell me what you feel.” “You’re the boss.” Nick nodded before pushing off and taking a few rounds. Anaki folded her arms analyzing the jumps and turns. It taken her two days to empty her queue so she could concentrate on the bike alone.
Anaki wasn’t specialized in two wheelers. Nonetheless, she was able to keep her side of the deal and restore the bike in under 3 weeks. She even touched up on the paint job.
“Your back is too hunched, sit up straighter.” She called. Nick put up a thumbs up to conform that he heard her. The motocross park was empty at this time of day, plus this weather was too cloudy for perfect vision and zero accidents. It was only the two of them in addition to the staff and a few bench audience.
“I feel like the brakes are too loose.” Nick raised his voice over the motor as he slowed down near Anaki. The girl waved him off as she crouched in front of the bike. The tool kit she kept in her back pocket came in handy. And it too her no more than five minutes before she gestured for the boy to get back on. Nick blinked for a second before throwing his leg to one side. He revved the bike before accelerating and hard braking to test out her work.
“It’s great.” He looked back at her, holding a thumbs up.
“Very well.” She nodded, pocketing her little tool set, watching the boy climb of his machine. “Out of curiosity . . .” Anaki glanced between Nick and the bike. “What happened to the bike? Did it get run over?”
Nick looked up at her surprised as he pulled off his helmet. That was the last thing he’d expect from all. After the few conversations hes shared with her, and contemplating if she just didn’t like him or was always like that, Nick would say she’s out of character at the moment. He truly expected that she would have to walk away and he chase after her.
“Well, I tried doing a heart grab— it’s when you grab your seat and handles but your legs are up in the air above your head, like a handstand. You can probably guess how that turned out.”
Anaki slowly nodded, pursing her lips. “Alright. Well, keep the tricks within your limits unless you want to keep me and the hospital downtown in business.” With a nod, Anaki turned on her heel, making a b-line to the exit. Ok now he could chase after her
“Wait! Ms. Anaki!” Nick quickly caught up to her with the bike. “Don’t with the miss. Just Anaki is fine.” “Okay, Anaki.” He said her name slowly. “how much do I owe you?”
“Enough to buy me dinner.” She answered quickly without fail.
──────────────────── · 𖥸 · ───────────────────
“So,” With a mouthful, Anaki leaned her back on the windshield of her truck, cozing herself on the hood as she held the burger in one hand and the fountain drink in the other. “What brings a boy like you to Australia?”
Nick furrows his eyebrows, looking at her. He technically hasn’t looked away from her since he sat on the hood of her truck with her but now he was really concentrating. He waited until he finished chewing and swallowed. “How’d you know I’m not from around here?”
“I just can. Plus your accent, and your choice of words. Saying flip flops doesn’t really give you away as a local.” “Well, I’m here for university.” Nick thought for a moment, running a hand through his curls to keep it off his eyes. “From Belgium.” He added nodding.
“University? How old are you?” “Twenty.”
“Twenty? That’s year two then huh?” “Year two?” He chuckled with a small smile, watching the view of the distant beach from the parking lot they were in. “Sophomore.” He corrected her, tilting his head. “My bad.” She giggled slightly. “Sophomore.”
“I see that you are also not a local.” Nick smiled and leaned back on the windshield with her, holding a calm yet comforting gaze with her warm hazels. “Where are you from?”
“. . . I was born in Germany.” “Germany.” Nick breathed out, whistling slightly. “Must be nice, huh?”
“No . . . No, not really. I didn’t really . . . I didn’t enjoy my experience. I moved to live with my uncle at 12 anyways.” “In Germany also?” “France.” Anaki nodded, taking a long sip from her paper straw. “France?” Nick chuckled, the two countries were the complete opposite of each other in terms of culture, language and distance. “Did you like France? You speak french?” “Oui.”
The soft laugh they shared made Nick’s heart warm as they continued to eat in comfortable silence. The gentle breeze and the now clear sky that made a perfect canvas for the setting sun. It was a nice calm moment between the two. Just sharing each other’s presence.
“I think I like you.” The boy blurted out quickly.

Sweat trickled down his forehead as he groaned heavily. Nick could feel his body protest and ache as he pushed himself to roll on his back, settling into the scorching sand. The sun glared into his eyes when he flicked the visor of the helmet up. Maybe that wasn’t the best idea, he kept his eyes closed instead, concentrating on his breathing in hopes that it would decrease the pain that was flowing through his body.
The broken down motocross bike beside him hummed with the same amount of pain. The paint was scratched and damaged and the metal was dented with a few broken pieces. Nick didn’t like that. He groggily pulled his helmet off, taking a deep breath of fresh air that didn’t smell like his sweat or breakfast for the first time in an hour. He was reminded with how close the bike course was to the beach with every grain of salt he inhaled.
“What a pity, she was very beautiful too.” Nick opened his eyes to see his group of friends had gathered around his dirt bike, examining the effects from the crash. Nick rolled his eyes, attempting to sit up. “Woah there, sun ball. Take it easy.” Terry helped him up, an entertained smile on his face.
“I thought I said you weren’t ready, champ.” The older-class-man scolded, nudging Nick’s arm with a deep chuckle. The brunette draped an arm around Nick’s shoulders turning him to look at the bike. “It was a good try though, bottoms up.”
Nick shook his head, running his dirty gloves through his hair. “Well, you ready to take this baby on her first doctor’s appointment?” Terry hauled the broken bike up on its wheels.

“Hey, ‘Naki! It’s your favourite customer!” Now changed into their casual attire, Terry had taken it upon himself to transport Nick and his bike in his truck to the mechanic workshop nearby.
The older boy was greeted by the other mechanics who passed by, patting on his back and head. “keep your greasy hands out of my hair, I actually put a lot if effort into it.” The brunette swatted them away. He didn’t waist anymore time walking into the workshop where cars were being maintained and fixed left and right. “There you are, ‘Naki.” Nick watched as Terry pulled the edge of a skateboard from under a car, pulling the girl who was laying under there was well. “You missed me?”
The girl with coffee hair gave a glare. Her dirtied face was indicating she could use a break to wash up. Her mouth was holding onto a wrench while her two hands worked on wires. It was always surprising to see a woman like her in a place as filthy and masculine as this. “Whatever you have it better be good. You give me another FineLine and I’ll beat your ass.”
“Okay okay, chill.” Terry chuckled nervously. “Nick, this is Anaki. You’ll be seeing her a lot more often,”
“—Yes I will," Nick blurted out without even realizing.
The two third parties looked at him quietly, one judging and the other confused. “I mean, it’s a pleasure to meet you. Sorry. I’ve just— I’ve never met a woman who was into mechanics,” The blond nervously corrected himself.
“Okay? . . . Well, . . . Why don’t you wash up I’ll show you what I have,” Terry clapped his hands, cutting the awkward silence short, giving a polite smile to the girl laying on the floor. “Give me a minute— Someone take over!” The brunette called before she stood up, walking off.
──────────────────── · 𖥸 · ───────────────────
“What am I dealing with here?” Nick couldn’t keep his eyes off of her. Now that she had wipes her face clean with a rag he could see the features of her face clearly. Her lips, her nose, her cheeks, her warm beige skin, or her hazel eyes. Her chocolate hair was tied in a bun, which Nick thought was made of silk despite working in the humid weather all day in a dirty environment.
She was really pretty, that was for sure.
Terry had brought her to his truck, opening the tailgate. He gestured to the beaten up bike. The green and blue paint job was scratched, the seat was impaired with wooden sticks, the front wheel was dented and the back tire had deflated.
“A VK19, where did you get this? More importantly, were you trying to commit suicide with this?” Anaki rolled up her sleeves, pulling the bike closer to herself, examining it. “My mom got it for me.” was the answer she got from Nick. “Well your mom knows her stuff. There’s only a hundred of these, you’re one lucky guy.”
“So? . . . you in?” Terry already knew the answer to his question as he watched Anaki pull the bike put of the trunk and onto the ground. “Go register it in the main office, I’ll call you in a week or so.”
Nick watched as she dragged his bike away. Terry narrowed his eyes at the blond, nudging his shoulder to snap him out of his daydream. “If you don’t leave your number, she’s not going to call you.” “I get to give her my number.” Nick whistled as he scurried off quickly. Terry was left there, confused out of his mind. No way a ball of sunshine wanted a grey cloud.
