Sexism in Catherine
Tumblr media
The next game i'll be focusing on is a game called Catherine. Catherine is a puzzle plat-former adventure game. I'll just give a bit of background on this game. Spoilers ahead. So basically Catherine is about our main character Vincent Brooks who was living a normal life until he began having strange nightmares after his girlfriend Katherine began talking about marriage and commitment. This matter becomes more complicated for Vincent when he meets a girl named Catherine and begins to have an affair with her, the nightmares become much more intense. Major spoilers ahead, Catherine is a succubus who takes the form of a man's greatest desire and after having intercourse with them, kills them in their sleep. I should also mention that the decisions you make in the game effect's the ending you get so keep that in mind. So the game seems pretty good. But there are some sexism qualities hidden within the game.
One that sticks out right away is the sexual scenes in this game. Of course that comes with an M rated game but its still there. Another sexist thing, is how Vincent see's Catherine. Now keep in mind Catherine took the form of Vincent's greatest desire. And of course his greatest desire was an overly sexy, blond woman with blue eyes. Now to me that's saying men desire this type of woman. Now lets talk about Katherine, Vincent's girlfriend. Katherine seems like a normal boring slightly b*tchy girlfriend. But if you dig deeper she resembles something. I actually had to Google this to find out but the two ladies, Katherine and Catherine, both resemble something. Katherine resembles a boring, matrimonial trap that Vincent will be stuck in forever if he chooses to be with her. And Catherine resembles a wild, evil, crazy, free, sexy life that Vincent can enjoy if he chooses to be with her instead of Katherine. If that isn't sexist enough for you, look at the way Katherine and Catherine act. Katherine acts like a boring common girlfriend that isn't exciting for Vincent. Katherine seems to want all the normal things, marriage, children and a commitment. Vincent seems to not want those things. Catherine on the other hand acts like a giggly, sexual, sexy woman. She acts like she has sex on the brain all the time. She's a roller coaster ride for Vincent and he seems to like it. And the way this is sexist is the way the two are shown and how of course all men are going to want a girl who has sex on the brain and not a girl who has morals and wants a steady relationship and commitment. It's basically saying that if you want to keep a man you have to be an attractive, sexual lady with no morals. If your boring, then too bad. It's also sexist for men. In the way thats saying that most men will cheat if someone better and sexier comes along. Its saying that men don't want a practical woman with morals. This isn't always true. Most men do want a woman with morals who wont cheat on them. I strongly disagree with the sexism and what is being shown in this game.

Sexism In Mario Games
Tumblr media
Another game that has sexist features that must be mentioned is Mario. You know the game with the little Italian plumber that stomps on mushrooms and stuff? Harmless as it may seem, this game has multiple sexist things throughout the storyline.
The first thing I would like to point out is that this game plays the damsel in distress card ALL THE DAMN TIME. Throughout all the games Mario is constantly saving Princess Peach from Bowser. This is basically portraying that women are weak and are in need a saving all the time from men. That we always need that prince charming to come in and make everything better because apparently we're too incapable of solving our troubles on our own. People can deny this but just saying it's the story line but why doesn't Mario or any other male figure need saving? Why is it always a female?
Another that needs to pointed out is that the Mario games have played into the dumb blonde stereotype. Princess Peach is portrayed as a ditsy women that wears lots of pink dresses and is always getting herself in trouble because she's too ignorant to be aware of the evils that surround her.  She's literally animated as useless as bowser carries her off into the sunset with Mario's short legs trailing behind about 60 feet. Not cool, Nintendo.
The final thing I would like to talk about is that men do all the jobs in Mario. All the women in these games don't lift a finger to do anything. Why can't Peach save Mario? Why is Mario always the one to have to do the saving that usually gets him into sticky situations, and if you're a sucky gamer like me, it most likely leads to his death. (imlookingatyousquidsurfing). I just feel like at some point they should give Mario a rest and let Peach step up to the plate but that probably won't happen because she's a dumb blonde and weak. (Note heavy sarcasm)
I honestly can't believe I haven't realized how many sexist properties this game has, and I've played Mario games for most of my life! I just wish that they would change some things to make Peach look less weak and stupid, and not play the damsel in distress card every game. Make a game where the women are kicking butt too!

Sexism In Gaming - “Dead or Alive Xtreme 3″
Tumblr media
So my duty is to talk about the subject on sexism in video games, which happens quite a lot. It's usually directed towards females and how they're represented in video games. Which sometimes, really isn't good and very sexual. In some games you can have pretty strong female characters that aren't sexualized, but that really doesn't happen most of the time. The only female characters I can think of that aren't sexualized, and yes I literally did try to find a list of female characters that AREN'T sexualized, and I found nothing. The only females in video games I can think of are a handful of females in Assassins Creed; Mary Read, Kaniehtí:io, Evie Frye, and a few others in that series. In other series like Legend of Zelda theres only a few as well like; Zelda, Impa (in some outfits), Saria and Malon, Anju, and a few other characters. There are probably more not sexualized females in other series but thats really the only ones I know or can think of at the moment.
One of the main games i'm going to be focusing on right now is a game called Dead or Alive Xtreme 3. Sounds like a super fun gun-slinging video game right? Wrong. This game is about being on an island with girls in barely any clothing, doing random stuff and giggling like idiots. Some of the things these girls do are volleyball and something called "butt battle". So basically this is an island party game with lots of jiggling female parts. I shouldn't really have to explain why its sexist but I will anyways. So if you don’t know what sexism is, i'll explain. Basically sexism is where a negative stereotype is placed on a gender and gives the gender a bad image. An example of this is when someone believe's that all women should be in the kitchen making men a sammich. Or when all men should be big and burly and shouldn't cry because it makes them weak. Now that you understand what sexism is, lets look at the game again. So like I was saying, this game is just full of jiggle physics and giggling girls. The way this game is sexist is that it's basically saying all girls have to be skinny with big boobs and long beautiful hair. It's also saying that they have to love to be in revealing swimwear and love playing sports and other stupid things they play in this game. It's also saying that in order to be friends with girls and especially the girls in this game, you have to shower them in gifts and hope they befriend you. So basically this game is fan-service for men and is sexist to the extreme. Or how they spell it 'xtreme' what a play on words.

Sexism In The Sims.
Tumblr media
First off, I just want to say a little disclaimer  for all the sensitive tumblrers. (Is that even a word?). All the observations in this article will be solely based off personal experience from playing these games since there isn't much evidence on the internet that points to the game series being sexist.
The first thing people need to know about the Sims games is that they're probably the least sexist games in existence. There are a few minor details in each game that can be labeled as sexist but they're so subtle, a person probably wouldn't notice them without really thinking about the content.
When you really think about sexism in the Sims games, since there's so much nonexistent content it's really the players fault, but first let me explain before you get butt hurt because I said somethings your fault (coughcoughtrumpsupporters) The Sims gives us the power to create fictional versions of people and manipulate their lives however we please. We're the ones who truly make it sexist by the way we choose to play. Some of us choose to have the wife stay home, cook, clean and raise the children whilst the husband gets the corporate job and makes the bread and butter for the family, and that’s the only way we choose to play because it seems “right” or “normal”. In this game, both genders have the same opportunities that they can complete. There is no restriction saying that a women can’t be a CEO or a man can’t be a Daycare worker.
Now, I'm going to start criticizing the Sims 2 and it’s sexist habits. ,It is important to mention this will be opinions from playing the GameCube version and NOT PC version. Take note that I haven’t played this games in YEARS, there is still one memory that sticks out to me from playing this game. In the Sims 2, when you hire a maid option, the maid was always FEMALE. Not only was the maid always female, it was dressed in a FRENCH MAID outfit. Not only is this VERY sexist, It also is kind of stereotypical. We should at least have the option to get a male maid.  I will say that they did  fix this in the Sims 3 however.
Now moving along to the Sims 3. While this game has many improvements from the previous game, it still has it’s faults. In both games, you cannot dress a sim in clothes mean’t for the opposite sex. This is very disheartening really, considering it’s 2017, and the Sims 4 doesn’t have this option yet either. What if a player wanted to make their sim a girl but the sim is a tomboy, and wants to wear men clothes or have a male styled haircut? They can’t make their character the way they truly envisioned them. Why is there even two separate categorizes? Why can’t the clothing and hairstyles all go under one tab without gender labels attached?
Overall, this is a very difficult game series to peg as sexist because it’s hardly sexist at all. Like mentioned before, its how you play it, and if you play it in a way that’s sexist, then you’re making the game sexist. Although in each game there are some fishy things that could be labelled, I truly believe it’s hardly enough to get worked up about. So keep on Simin’ and try not to be influenced by sexist ideals in your game play!
