What Do I Know About Reviews? Astonishing Adventures: The Lost Library (Mutants & Masterminds 3e)
We're going to take a visit to Titan City today, a setting that's being explored in the Mutants & Masterminds 3e adventure The Lost Library. #TTRPGs
The recent Valiant Adventures Kickstarter gave me a reason to dive back into Mutants & Masterminds 3rd edition, and I appreciated that, because I enjoyed the games I’ve run and played in with the system. Every so often I’m reminded that M&M 3e just keeps on going. It’s not always with big, flashy products, but with a lot of consistent releases. When I was still running and playing the game, we…

Review Today at Gnome Stew
Nothing to see here today, head over to Gnome Stew. But if you do want to visit, I won't be mad.
I don’t have a review today on the blog, but I do have a review today on “A” blog. If you want to see my review of Girl by Moonlight, a Forged in the Dark game that uses the various tropes of Magical Girl stories to explore marginalized people in a society. Spoilers for the review, but exploring the game, it becomes evident that exploring how characters with queer identities exist within…

What Do I Know About Reviews? Shadowrun Anarchy 2050
Normally I don't reach this far back for reviews, but this poor thing kept getting put on the backburner. From way back in 2021, we look at Shadowrun Anarchy 2020 from Catalyst Games. #TTRPGs #Shadowrun
Agreements with Indigenous people being undercut in a rush for resources. A nation declaring genocide because they feel threatened after terrorist attacks. Worldwide pandemics that devastate the world, fade out of the public consciousness, and then resurge. US Supreme Court decisions that erode the legal assumptions of modern life. Russia gets into a war in Europe for trying to annex the domains…

What Do I Know About First Impressions? Daggerheart (Beta Playtest)
It took a little bit of effort to set aside the time to dig into this, and I definitely didn't make it through all 300+ pages of the playtest, but I've got some thoughts on Daggerheart now that I've wrapped my brain around the edges.
I’ve gone through a few cycles of thoughts since I’ve been looking at the Daggerheart playtest rules. First, I was really interested in diving into it and very intrigued. Then I was a little daunted with the amount of material that was in the playtest packet. Then, for a while, I didn’t even want to talk about the game, because the RPG discourse became . . . disheartening. So, before I start…

What Do I Know About First Impressions? The Lost Universe
I thought it might be fun to take a look at NASA's new RPG adventure (a phrase I never thought I would type), and it turns out, it's a little more substantial than I expected. #TTRPGs
Let’s do a First Impression today. In this case, it’s not because it’s a product that I haven’t been able to read cover to cover, or because it’s not the final version of a product, or because there is some element of the content I’m not familiar with, like products made for multiple game systems. Then you have those products that are free. It’s not like my suggestions about prioritization of…

What Do I Know About Reviews? Dragonbane Bestiary
I'm venturing into the realm of Dragonbane once again, this time looking at the recently released Dragonbane Bestiary from Free League. #TTRPGs #Dragonbane
I know it’s always dangerous to become predictable, but I have a secret. Don’t tell anyone. The easiest way to get me to buy an additional book for your game system after I have picked up the core rules is to put out a bestiary. Can you really have enough monsters? I don’t think so. Disclaimer I was sent a PDF review copy of the Dragonbane Bestiary by Free League. I could tell you that I was…

What Do I Know About Reviews? Fiery Angels (Blade Runner RPG)
It's time to head into the not so far future of Blade Runner, and examine Fiery Angels, the second case file for Free League's Blade Runner the RPG.
When I first heard that Free League was making a Blade Runner RPG, I was torn. Free League has made some excellent games, and I couldn’t pick a better company to work on the RPG adaptation. However, Blade Runner is a franchise where the series protagonists hunt and kill Replicants who are not afforded basic human rights. Both movies revolve around those protagonists wrestling with the…

Dragonbane: When an Encounter Drives You Batty
Just for fun, I decided to play around with the Vampiric Bats statistics for Dragonbane, so I toyed with both expanding their monster attacks out to six different attacks, as well as treating them common animals. #TTRPGs #Dragonbane
For no particular reason, I thought I would visit the vampiric bats entry in the Dragonbane Rules booklet from the starter set. Specifically, I wanted to take a look at the monster attacks that they have. Every other creature in the game, either in the Rules booklet or in the recently released Bestiary, if they have monster attacks, there are six random entries on the tables. Vampiric Bats only…

What Do I Know About Gameplay? Dragonbane
Is this a post where I wrote a thread on social media and then remembered I have a blog for this kind of stuff? It sure is! Here is a summary of my thoughts after running a one-shot of Dragonbane. #TTRPGs #Dragonbane
Last year, one of my favorite games that I reviewed was Dragonbane. At the time, I had play through the game using the solo rules, but I hadn’t had the opportunity to get the game to the table with other players. We had a player who couldn’t make our regular Thursday game, so we played a one shot of Dragonbane instead. I learned a few more things than I did when I was playing the solo game. Not…

What Do I Know About First Impressions? Valiant Adventures Quickstart
I really wanted to get this done sooner, but hey, with a couple days to spare, I take a look at the Green Ronin's Valiant Adventures Quickstart and how it compares to Mutants & Masterminds 3e.
Today, we’re going to be looking at the Quickstart guide to the Valiant Adventures RPG, which was released in conjunction with Green Ronin’s latest crowdfunding effort. This is way later than I wanted to write this, but as of right now, you still have about two days to go check out the Valiant Adventures RPG Kickstarter from Green Ronin. I’ll be honest with you; I’m not backing this because I’m a…

Lines of Thought: The G.I. Joe Roleplaying Game
Since I indulge way too much nostalgia, I decided to concentrate a whole bunch of it in one post, and focus it on the direction of the current G.I. Joe RPG line of products. #TTRPG #G.I.Joe
If you follow me anywhere on social media, you’ll know one of my recurring hyper fixations is G.I. Joe. It was of the first toy lines I collected (back in the days when my collecting was based on me begging for birthday and Christmas presents). The Marvel G.I. Joe comic was the first comic book for which I had a subscription. Every time I try to get you, they pull me back in. I also really like…

What Do I Know About Crowdfunding? Tales of the Valiant Game Master's Guide
Now that the Kickstarter is live, we're going to take a look at the preview material provided for the Tales of the Valiant Game Master's Guide, and talk a bit about what it's covering. #TTRPG #5ESRD #Project Black Flag
Let’s take a look at a crowdfunding project that is currently going on, as of the time of this writing (1/16/2023): Tales of the Valiant Game Master’s Guide on Kickstarter. Before we get too far into this, I wanted to throw out some thoughts I have on the timing of this crowdfunding. I understand that adding the Game Master’s Guide to the initial Tales of the Valiant Kickstarter would have…

Marvel Multiverse Extended Objectives
Following up on the review I did for Marvel Multiverse Role-Playing, I take a look at what extended objectives might look like in those rules. #MMRPG
I recently reviewed the Marvel Multiverse Role-Playing game after having a chance to make a few characters and also play in a one-shot of the game. It worked really well, but it is also very specific about how the rules are applied. It has individually simple elements that can be layered to create the character you are trying to represent. The problem is, resolving situations other than combat…

What Do I Know About Reviews? The Demonplague (OGL 5e)
Although there are Tier 4 Adventurers League Adventures, and Dungeon of the Mad Mage lists a level range that stretches to 20th level, none of the published adventures for Dungeons and Dragons 5thedition officially contain a single storyline that spans 1st to 20thlevel, so for players that want to experience the full range of D&D content in a consistent campaign, the options are sparse. Because I…

Lore 24: A Meeting of Bards
It's time to look way back in time, and deep within the earth. #Lore24
Neevok is an orc woman of middle years. She has gray skin and dark red hair, and fascinating golden irises. Neevok has a powerful, melodious voice, and she wears a multi layered, multi-colored set of robes, an artistic combination of various other forms of clothing, woven and arranged into a visually pleasing yet stolid robe. Neevok travels farther from home than most orcs. She visits other orc…

Lore24: Quendon, Agent of the Magus Synod
Time to take a look at the arcane politics of our setting in today's #Lore24, as we meet Quendon, an agent of the Magus Synod.
Quendon is light skinned man with auburn hair and green eyes, well-groomed and bearded, and appearing to be in the third decade of life. Quendon often wears well-tailored but functional travel clothes, with over robes and an ornate staff. His staff is wooden, with an encircling channel that swirls around the staff from base to tip, filled with multi-colored crystals. The head of the staff is…

Lore 24: General Delavros and the Society of Coin and Claw
After a weekend break, we're back for #Lore24, this time examining the history of mercenary companies in our setting, as seen through the eyes of General Delavros of the Society of the Coin and Claw.
General Delavros is a woman in middle years, with long, braided black hair, piercing copper eyes, and enough scars on her brown skin to show that she has worked her way up to the position of authority she now holds in the Society of Coin and Claw. She is well regarded by many of the rulers of the individual nations of the continent as a consummate professional. Delavros is skilled in making…
