people are slow dancing… and I’m on tumblr. Again.
taking part of the sacred act of “scrolling on tumblr while at high school prom” that my ancestors before me have also partaken in

every character playlist has the
-song where the lyrics are disturbingly on the nose
-song that doesnt suit the character but you havent taken it out cuz its a banger
-bad song that stays because it suits the character so good
-last five songs that may or may not stay depending on whether or not they pass the test of sitting in the list for a week
-oleander by mother mother

very funny when you have long-term OCs that didn't share many traits with you when you made them, but your circumstances have changed so now it looks like you were engaging in some extremely un-subtle projection

"this song is about this" "this song is about that" "this person wrote this song about this person" wrong all songs are about ocs ive made and ocs that have not yet come to pass

Yay, unsolicited advice time! Or, not really advice, more like miscellaneous tips and tricks, because if there's one thing eight years of martial arts has equipped me to write, it's fight scenes.
.
Fun things to add to a fight scene (hand to hand edition)
It's not uncommon for two people to kick at the same time and smack their shins together, or for one person to block a kick with their shin. This is called a shin lock and it HURTS like a BITCH. You can be limping for the rest of the fight if you do it hard enough.
If your character is mean and short, they can block kicks with the tip of their elbow, which hurts the other guy a lot more and them a lot less
Headbutts are a quick way to give yourself a concussion
If a character has had many concussions, they will be easier to knock out. This is called glass jaw.
Bad places to get hit that aren't the groin: solar plexus, liver, back of the head, side of the thigh (a lot of leg kicks aim for this because if it connects, your opponent will be limping)
Give your character a fighting style. It helps establish their personality and physicality. Are they a grappler? Do they prefer kicks or fighting up close? How well trained are they?
Your scalp bleeds a lot and this can get in your eyes, blinding you
If you get hit in the nose, your eyes water
Adrenaline's a hell of a drug. Most of the time, you're not going to know how badly you've been hurt until after the fact
Even with good technique, it's really easy to break toes and fingers
Blocking hurts, dodging doesn't
.
Just thought these might be useful! If you want a more comprehensive guide or a weapons edition, feel free to ask. If you want, write how your characters fight in the comments!
Have a bitchin day <3

Do other writers ever get this like, hyper-specific dialogue exchange drop into their brains and you know exactly where these character are standing and what they’re doing and how they’re saying these words but that’s all you get. You don’t have much other context and this specific moment that exists only at this time in your headspace??

If a scene feels flat and you can't figure it out, ask yourself:
• What can MC smell? Is there an ocean breeze, sweat, a cinnamon roll fresh out the oven?
• What can MC hear, besides the dialogue? Is a bird singing, river flowing, a car speeding, clock ticking?
• Can they taste something, even if they're not eating? Previously drunk alcohol or juice, aftertaste of a cigarette, smog, too instense perfume?
• Can they feel something on their skin? Rough clothes or delicate material, blowing wind, an allergy or a rash, grass that theyre laying on?
• What does the character see, besides other characters? Is the room dark or is sunlight coming in nicely? Are the colours vibrant or dull? Are there any plants?
• What's the weather? Is it snowing and the cold is making goosebumps appear on their arms? Is it hot and sweaty and clothes are clinging to their body?
• HOW DOES IT MAKE THEM FEEL? To any of the above.
Do they like the smell of cinnamon rolls or are they weirdos (I'm a weirdo, I don't fit in).
Does the clock ticking calm them down or annoy them?
Do they enjoy the aftertaste of a cig and like how dirty it makes them feel?
Are they sensitive to touch and how their clothing feels on their skin or are they indifferent?
Would they enjoy the scenery more if it was more sunny out, because they're afraid of the darkness?
Do they like it snowy or are they always cold and hate winter?
Come on, give them persoanlity, likes and dislikes, don't be scared to make them people and not only likeable characters.

writing update idk
hi ppl!! a while ago, as in, the end of March-ish, I “finished” the first part of my apocalypse wip, clocking in at just over 25k words!! IMO I think it needs a partial rewrite and a heavy, heavy dose of fact-checking (I need to figure out how people can survive in the wilderness xd),,, but it’s decently resolved enough for me to take a break!!
Now, I’m working on my unofficial Camp Nano project (tracking words thru an extremely clunky google sheets thing!!) and I’m over 6k words thru it! I realize now that I’ll probably not hit my goal of 20k at this pace, but it’s still progress! I’m still writing! And I’m on track to pace this draft better than the earlier one!
It’s the romance about the two guitarists who enter a demo album competition together, if y’all remember that from my writeblr re-intro?? It’s weird, cuz I realized that in the original draft, it was summer vacation… which equals no school friends for my characters to interact with! So, I set this one during the school year and created two friend groups for my characters to have — one sucks, and the other is awesome.
The only thing is, I keep procrastinating writing until later in the day, especially because all I wanna do after I get home from school is, well, nothing! Then I write at like 9:00 pm, which isn’t the best time to start, haha.
Also, I had a moment of clarity in my town’s new Barnes and Noble recently. I was looking at the young adult and middle grade books, and was just struck by a wave of how much all these stories and worlds and characters mean to me. I wanna write books that people can take refuge in and be nostalgic for and help them enjoy reading!!! I wanna be younger me and current me both’s favorite author <3
also! I am constantly filled with ideas for little tabletop games and tables and things! so that’s cool too! ALSO this Saturday I’m going to a huge book sale, let’s hope I get some great finds!!!
bye :)
