^That is stated so well!!! All of the above, really.
I've slowly been moving some of my old fic (fic that I do not love anymore but do want to keep available) from ff.net to Ao3. And when I say old I mean, like, nearly-a-decade-old fic that I wrote as a teen. And there hasn't been much traffic on them which makes total sense since it's older fandoms that are way less active than they were when I originally posted the fics.
Anyway, I got a comment on one and was so excited because someone read my old fic from a basically-dead fandom and decided to leave a comment?!
And then I opened the email and it was just criticism. No compliment sandwich or anything just straight up criticism. It's been long enough since I posted it that I was more annoyed than anything. But I couldn't help but imagine what it would have been like if that had happened when I was a high schooler. I remember being so proud of that fic and thinking it was one of my best yet. To get no comments would have been a little sad but I could've dealt with it. But then to finally get a comment, only to open and see that all it was was someone railing on the medical inaccuracies? I know it would have been so discouraging. Honestly if I read it at the wrong time, I could see my younger self just deleting the fic altogether.
I guess the point I'm trying to make is, you never know the circumstances around a fic you've read. What may seem to you like an innocent remark, or even a service, could end up pushing someone away from what is supposed to be a fun and enjoyable pastime.
I recently saw a post going around that was like, "Idk what the deal is, I appreciate people pointing out my mistakes!" That's great for you! But don't operate on the assumption that every author feels the same.
I just saw a Tik Tok that said writers on AO3 are not looking for constructive criticism in their reviews. I have no audience on this platform so I have to know if this is true? I've always left my pros and cons when reading a fic and now I'm concerned that the authors didn't like that.
Yeah writers are Not looking for criticism, constructive or otherwise. Unless they specifically ask for it, it’s considered rude and honestly a bit hurtful. In the least bitchy way possible, don’t do that. It’s unwanted.

idk if this is a trope or whatever but i love it so much when fictional characters massively downplay the severity of their injuries but in more of a comedic way than a tragic one. like some guy gets impaled and they just glance down at the shard of metal sticking out of them and say some dumb bullshit like "oh man. that's gonna need some ice." and then pass out while all their friends yell at them for being an unfunny idiot with terrible priorities.

Resources For Writing Deaf, Mute, or Blind Characters
Despite the fact that I am not deaf, mute, or blind myself, one of the most common questions I receive is how to portray characters with these disabilities in fiction.
As such, I’ve compiled the resources I’ve accumulated (from real life deaf, mute, or blind people) into a handy masterlist.
Deaf Characters:
Deaf characters masterpost
Deaf dialogue thread
Dialogue with signing characters (also applies to mute characters.)

Mute Characters

The youtube channel of the wonderful Tommy Edison, a man blind from birth with great insight into the depiction of blind people and their lives.
An Absolute Write thread on the depiction of blind characters, with lots of different viewpoints and some great tips.
And finally, this short, handy masterpost of resources for writing blind characters.

Don't you think you owe it to readers to give them what they want?
No? What an odd take. Read my fic or don't.

So today I got a rather unkind comment on AO3 (one could call it hate), but I believe it to be a bot for several reasons:
Guest account, but username attached
Said username exists but person is unlikely to be reading Tolkien fic (according to their Tumblr and AO3, they are in other fandoms)
Two grammatically correct sentences
Super generic text that could apply to any fic:
"I've seen better fanfiction written by a toddler. Get it together!"
I'm curious, did anyone else get comments like this? Let me know.
And to those who have gotten rude comments and are now worried/upset: Maybe it was just a bot too. Either way: You're awesome for putting your writing out there for others to enjoy and you don't deserve to get rude comments for it. If you want feel free to message me to compare cases and discuss details :)
