Just to update , I did indeed throw together a Heath Barkley Cosplay to meet the one and only Lee Majors at Indy Comic Con last week 💜. I will remember that day forever.

Ok guys I am freaking out and need my nerds to come guide me.
I am going to my first Comic Con today (Indianapolis) with the specific intention of meeting Lee Majors (Heath from the Big Valley, Steve from Six Million Dollar Man, etc). I am so excited and awed to have the chance to meet this guy. I wasn’t planning on dressing up at all but I just realized I can put together a pretty accurate Heath Barkley cosplay- should I do it??? I know costumes are normal, but like costumes of a western from the 60s??? And he’s like 84- I don’t know if he’d think that’s cool or like … weird.
(Also it would be a female cosplaying as a male cowboy- doesn’t matter to me at all but might be weird to others..????) HELP IM SO EXCITED AND SCARED.

I think it is kind of like the “every square is a rectangle but not every rectangle is a square” type of thing. A lot of whump involved trauma of some type, but not all whump is super “traumatic”. For example- you can have comedic type injuries that are considered “whump” but not really “trauma” (papercut, walking in to a door, etc.).
Also there is so much in life and storytelling that is traumatic that has nothing to do with what we would classify as “whump”. Like for me- I would never dare to classify serious sexual assaults or something like that as “whump” - while I would most definitely consider it a trauma. For me, whump is often at least to some extent trivial. For me, whump is “fixable”. But that’s a whole other rabbit hole…
Honestly, what do people think about the idea of whump being defined as a genre that's about trauma? I'm including the idea of physical trauma in that, and rolling illness and other bodily woes in there as well. So trauma to the body and trauma to the mind.
(because of my last post)
Does it encapsulate the whump genre? Are there whump things that it misses? Non-whump things it includes?
Is that too specific a focus for all whump enjoyers? Does it overlap too much with other genres to be a definition?

Ironside s3e5- "A Bullet for Mark"
I just need to share this. This old episode of Ironside from the late 1960s has become probably my favorite whump episode of anything ever. And I watch a LOT of shows.
It has everything! Caretaker/whumpee role reversal, deeply concerned friends, surprisingly concerned minor characters, a serious wound treated seriously with lengthy hospital waiting and uncertain updates about his condition (etc.), secondary attempts on his life, important conversations and introspection by other character?? It's just so good. I have honestly watched this episode about 20 times in the last couple of months and I do not get tired of it.
Tumblr media
You, too, can watch this episode if you like these vintage whumps! The entire show is actually free to watch on this site...

(text description in ALT and below the cut)
Based on some rumblings I heard, I ended up quickly throwing together a fun little WIP bingo sheet! I'll admit I largely wrote the prompts for writing, but I think a good number of them should also apply to art!
Ultimately, the goal is to have fun, and finish whatever WIPs you can (without burning yourself out or having a bad time). If you needed a sign to pick up that project you've been putting off, the time is now!
3x4 Bingo square titled "Finish your fucking fics february"
the top three across left to right read "Update your oldest WIP", "Finish a WIP that's been buried deep in your drafts", and "Finish a WIP that you haven't posted yet"
the second row reads "Finish a recent WIP", "Finish a WIP you're scared of" and "Finish a WIP that's been haunting you"
the third row reads "Update a partially posted WIP", "Finish any WIP/Free Space", and "Finish the next WIP in a series you've been avoiding"
the last row reads "Update your newest WIP", "Finish a WIP that's been ignored for at least 6 months", and "Finish the next chapter for a fic you've been meaning to for months"

Wheelchair-bound really fucking sucks as a phrase, it implies that wheelchairs are something that imprison you rather than being a tool that lets us get out into the world.
Well- for the situation I described, it *is* that they are “stuck” there. The angst I was getting at requires that that person can’t get out of it, but wishes they could do more to help but in their situation can’t. But oh well! Don’t intend to offend.
(The caretaker I’m imagining from the fandom I’m following is a paralyzed wheelchair user who is constantly frustrated about the limits his new condition has on his usefulness 🤷🏼‍♀️).

Someone write me some prompt/plot starters for a caretaker who is wheelchair-bound rescuing a whumpee in a semi-remote area. Like “I’m sorry but can you walk along side me? I don’t want to leave you alone even to get help” - it’s got soo much potential 😍

Update: I accidentally opened my phone - at work- to the article “What does heroin smell like?” While trying to pull up Google Translate to communicate with my mostly-Spanish speaking coworker. He saw the title and instantly was shocked. 😂 How do you quickly explain “I’m writing a Fanfiction about an attempted murder via heroin overdose” to a coworker in a foreign language??? Send help.
My most recent google searches include “How fast is heroin overdose”, “internal bleeding symptoms”, and “smell of heroin”. I’m going to be in some type of watch list 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Wrote this niche AU fic recently. I am working on more Ironside AUs, but I don’t expect to get much traction 🤣

Currently obsessing over (and making my own whump lists) of easily the most niche nobody-cares-about show ever: Ironside (1967).
Just one of your standard old time formulaic police/detective procedurals, but I really enjoy it.
The premise alone is whumpy- Very independent senior detective is shot in an attempted assassination, but survives to live out the rest of his life paralyzed from the waist down and in a wheelchair. He is allowed to continue doing police things while disabled by being always surrounded and aided by a group of helper cops and an aide (who is not a cop). The aide character, Mark, is my unlikely whumpee and I am happily watching through the 8(?) seasons of this show Trying to find any whump I can find. If anyone is interested, I do have a bit of a list going already. 😘

On your excellent post about captors infractions……may I suggest Prodigal Son (Malcolm) / Buffy (Angel)?
I feel both of those characters could be perfect for this scenario!
I wish!!! I unfortunately have watched only brief clips of both of these shows!! But based on what I have seen, both of those whumpees would definitely have qualified in casting for my dream 😅

Had a seriously detailed whumpy dream about characters in some type of captivity In which there are - shall we say- “physical consequences” for any infraction of captors’ arbitrary rules. Normally when I have this sort of plot bunny drop in from nowhere I like to write it into a fic, but I can’t think of an appropriate fandom/universe for it! 😩
Anyone else ever have this problem?

Just finished an episode of Walker, Texas Ranger with this trope.
Walker was beaten up/unconscious and then tied up outside with a bunch of poisonous scorpions which repeatedly sting him (!!). Meanwhile Alex (lady lawyer and his love interest) is tied up in the nearby house and the bad guy is preparing to assault and kill her. Completely out of it from the poison(?) (and head injury) Walker comes back and fights the bad guy. When he eventually wins, he comes back, unties her, asks a few times if she is ok, and then promptly collapses.
So good.
(That is Season 4 Episode 14 If anyone is interested).
Whump Prompt #1164
Anon asked:
You got any ideas for a delirious whumpee who were partially sedated/drugged by the whumper managing to beat the shit out of the guards before finding and rescuing the caretaker from their cell whilst still completely out of it?
Sure:
“This way.” / “Find them.” / “Safe.” Are the only words that the whumpee can think. Anything else, and their head starts to pound.
There’s blood on their hands, they know this.
They’re aware of the pain from their knuckles too. They’re swollen and agonised but every blow to the oppositions numbs them.
They let their feet carry them; their mind following the muscle memory, and their arms fighting like a person possessed.
When they get to the cell, the caretaker is a little shaken up, but otherwise fine. It takes the whumpee a moment to process what they’re doing as their broken hands fumble for the key.
Maybe the caretaker is a little put-off by the blood-covered, staring whumpee at their door. Maybe they’re proud.
“Are you okay?” The caretaker says, pushing open the now unlocked door as the whumpees hands shake, and their eyes are glazed.
“Drug.” Says the whumpee, listless. In shock. During their escape, there are corridors lined by unconscious/dead henchmen. At some point, the whumpee acquired a knife/gun, though they don’t realise this until it’s in their hand again/the drug begins to wear off.

Just a Little Update to anyone who remembers/cares about little old me ❤️
I haven’t posted much at all in the last roughly 2 years (?) and that is mostly because after withdrawing from college In 2019, I went back in Fall of 21 and am happy to report that I just graduated!!!! In Addition to that, I have gone through several jobs and have landed in a career field that I am currently really enjoying.
I also was officially diagnosed with ADHD last month which is a surprise to no one, but it is very comforting to have the label. I’ve had a few other health concerns and a 1 year relationship that I just got out of. Sooo it’s been a lot, but I’m ready to get back into the fandom life a little bit.
Oh yeah and I wrote a play.
That was fun.
Just a Little heads up for those who may have missed me. I hope the whump community is still alive and well ❤️.
Love you all and I hope to make some good content for you all soon 😎

Ok. So I have a new tv hyperfixation: Walker, Texas Ranger. 😅
There are a loooooot of near misses for whump or episodes where the characters just shake it off, buuut when those good whump moments happen?? *chefs kiss*
I am working on a complete watch through and whump lists- my question is, do you all consider that appropriate for @vintagewhump ? Or my main here??
For me, I would consider anything like pre-cell phones as “vintage” (I guess) but I feel like I’ve seen things as late as the early 2000s labeled as “vintage” and I just do NOT agree with that.
