Last year, I decided to start making skill-based resolutions. Nothing shame-based or unpleasant, just things I’ve always wanted to learn how to do. This year’s skill is fire. As of now, I can get one lit with dry ingredients and a lighter or matches. By the end of the year I hope to be able to light one in crappy conditions and maybe with a bow drill or other friction method. In support of this goal, I picked up a new hatchet and spent a few nights filing down the bead, sharpening, sanding off the varnish, and applying linseed oil. It’s a good feeling tool now. One that I helped to shape and which I hope to use for the rest of my life. Splitting my first big batch of kindling, i thought about tools, the ones we call magic, the ones we think of as mundane, and how there isn’t much that separates the two. Six of Swords It was hard, but it is over. Knight of Swords To begin with the positives, the Knight of Swords is direct, determined, logical and passionate—but unfortunately, he can also be a bit of a dick. This Knight has the power of conviction behind him and won’t balk at the chance that he’s hurting feelings, being inappropriate, or even missing large parts of the overall picture that might—if given passing consideration—cause him to change his view. This morning, when I went out to feed my critters I noticed a flurry of dark eyed juncos mobbing a bit of grain that had been spilled in the shelter of an awning. We’ve had three straight days of snow, which has buried almost all available food, so I went back to the house and returned with a sack of birdseed (I had put up a couple feeders in the fall, which our local bear promptly put a stop to) and a suit cake. By the time I had finished the last feeding station, there were already ten + little birds wolfing down the seed from the first. I stood out there for twenty minutes, watching them peck (and squabble) and listening to them chirp and trill into the soft, quiet morning. Birds, like horses, are Rhiannon’s creatures.
