Card of the day - Two if Cups This deck is electric. Rich and raw it calls us to “imagine a world where black queer people are thriving,” showing 78 takes on what that can look like under the framework of the tarot. Audrey Lorde holds court as the Queen of Swords while the 3 of Coins has a Bottom showing himself while in the background people lift the stones for building pyramids into place. Semi-gloss and thick (but shuffleable), it’s quality holds its power well. As a wyt person I know this will be finding its next home soon because it is charged powerfully with Black reclaiming and naming that is achingly beautiful. Often representing union, connection, attraction, and partnership, something strikes me here about a detail for this time of year - the fox in the snow. Clad in only their underwear, the two individuals are in a close embrace where one rests into the other, but the fox is simultaneously seeking, heading somewhere that no steps are before it. There is intimacy, but also a calling to move forward into something new with purpose. Your home base, whether a lover, a best friend, your family of choice, or your close community (which does not need to be in person) are important for you to lean into today. To trust. My body shook, kria rocking me in my lovers arms, energy entering brave space, the volume of life turned up as the world glows. As I write this from mid-air, my wings still ache, my tongue alive with the taste of reality and auric possibly. This is the view from which I see today’s card of the day. Karmic Lessons. So often we repeat patterns until we open up to the core lessons we are called to in this lifetime. Today we pause and say “what patterns am I repeating that need to be heard.” Today the world whispers (and in some case screams) “why not listen to the lesson already?” The gazing figure looks upward, hand next to their ear. Card of the Day - Divine Masculine When the Untamed Elemental Deck by Tasya van Ree it practically glowed. The vibrant colors are so striking, with firm shape and depth of character. More than many high saturation decks I have seen, Untamed Elemental takes me on a body journey into the patterns that resonate on my tongue, a sharp invitation into vibration. https://tasyavanree.com The art van Ree has designed borders on the sometimes toxic vibe I can get from some Reiki work, but stops short in these images that instead pull from the “expanse her own radical embrace of expression” as they describe it. The matte mid-weight standard tarot-sized cards add to their use and punctuation of color. In today’s card, the Divine Masculine calls us into a draw or focus in our lives. Break away from feeling underwater and find one thing in this moment to focus on. That thing, right there. Hold tight and grab on. This is not the chokehold of toxic patriarchy, but the vision and action of guiding hand and penetrating hope. Card of the Day - Wheel of Fortune I am deeply attracted to this project by Zsuzsa who crafted it during the first year of the stay at home orders - a reimagining of tarot through the lens of what was happening in the 2020’s rather than the 1910s that held inspiration from long before. It’s colors are vivid, each suit set in color as well, and though I am not often drawn to decks in this graphic novel styling, Zsuzsa is capturing me each time I pull these cards out. Http://www.Zsuzsa.co.uk Some of the suits are reimagined as modern tools - swords as pencils/pens, wands as screens (computer, iPhone, etc); while cups remain the same, and pentacles are expanded to coins, bills, credit cards, and even game pieces. The major arcana especially struck me with Chariot being a person on public transit, the Hermit as a video gamer, and Temperance as a barista. The colors at the edges will likely not hold up to heavy use as the black is already diveted, but that might actually help my brain feel like the deck is not just artwork but a living tool. For today, I see this card in its face of “this too shall change.” Does life feel horrible? This too shall change. Does life feel amazing? This too shall change. If life is being on top of the world, take a moment and bank both finances and emotional fortitude because this too shall change. If life is being shit on a stick, breathe deep, knuckle in, ask for resources (knowing they may not come right now)… but that this too shall change. And if life is meh? Look to the sides of you and support those who need help turning their wheel because you have the power to help others pass from their darkness into light. Or vice versa. Remember though that light and dark do not mean good or bad, because sun can lift us or burn us, and darkness can bring predators or the safety of home. Card of the day - King of Pots I ordered “Jim Henson’s Labyrinth Tarot Deck” before it came out. I’m a huge fan of this movie, and it was a formative experience for my mythic mind growing up in the era of Bowie and Henson. Henson’s death was a huge blow for my heart actually, and this deck seemed like a chance to open up the vault of my spirit. The art by Tomas Hijo is gorgeous. They are the same artist who did “Tarot del Toro” and they bring the same aliveness to the colors and depth of wood-cut beauty. The stock is thick but still shuffleable, a rich matte finish that would be a joy to handle if this ended up actually resonating for me. The re-envisioning of the suits to Poles, Junk, Feathers, and Pots is fun and I love that the King of Junk (Pentacles) is the blue worm… good associations overall in the deck from movie references. https://tomashijo.carbonmade.com @tomashijo @insighteditions @titanbooks The King of Pots (Cups) is represented here by the trash goblin from the battle on the Goblin King’s castle. He is solid and reliable. Today, I encourage you to the solidity of the King of Cups/Pots. We each need to find our inner solidity, the one who will be there thick or thin, and is balanced in their emotions and actions actions alike. Card of the day - The Magician Born in 1840, Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter who left behind a rich array of work, including some that specifically touched on topics of the occult. In 2020, M. Wotherspoon was inspired to take his work and transform it into “The Lonely Dreamer Tarot” that is imperfect but beautiful, enticing yet confusing, a perfect fit for those drawn to this era of art and a mis-match for me. In addition to the classical 72 cards, the deck also features six additional cards that are intuition, shadow, intention, ancestors, grounding, and spirit. I found this addition to the deck an interesting one that is beautiful and surreal, with “intuition” specifically catching my eye. I don’t quite understand them but perhaps if I worked more with this deck I would. The deck comes with a solid little guidebook and the semi-gloss card stock is likely to hold up to quality amounts of use. Today’s card of the day is the Magician. Instead of being placed facing forward with his tools all around him, this gender ambiguous individual is depicted by Redon/Wotherspoon gazing off to the left in a gaze that meets an unknown point of focus. Overhead an infinity symbol is prominent, taking up the same space as it does on the Strength card. This image reminds me of Eastern European Christian depictions of the Magdalene, taken in both functionally in her relationship to the Christ but also with a determination in her own role outside of any such association - a Christian Bechdel test of sorts. Today is a chance for you to tap into your own potential without relying on the characters you are often associated with. Who are you, and what are your strengths, outside of who are attached to? What do you see that others do not? You are not a secondary character in your own life. This little piece of "Sputnik" Argonite bored out a little home for itself in my heart, so I wanted to do a quick reading for myself in honor of that new connection. The resulting pull was a cross between the FATHER of WANDS & THREE of PENTACLES 🔥⛰️🐍 This meeting of cards perfectly reflects the energies of my current creative shift. A coming-home to the basics of what speaks to my soul, that which is both grounding & igniting.
