I was (once again) accosted by the Ira Glass quote about being a beginner creative. It still hits like it did 10+ years ago:

“Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.”

Hi! I love the pouf you made! Obsessed with it, keep a tab open just to take a look at it (ok I'm sorry I stop) Was wondering if you used a pattern to make/sew it? And what did you fill it with? Thanks!

i didn't use a pattern for this one, but that is only because i had already made three poufs using this pattern from this Bernina blog.

the template and tutorial are great, but the notable changes I have made are:

building an interior pillow and an exterior cover that zips over it, this makes it easy to wash (i'm actually using this piece in my home) and it puts significantly less strain on the decorative panels

making the exterior from cotton canvas... my first two poufs were made from lovely vintage fabrics which obviously tore immediately rip

edge stitching the seams where the side panel meets the top and bottom pieces, this helps keep the shape crisp

serging (overlocking) the interior seams to help reduce unraveling

i have stuffed my poufs with a few different materials depending on what i had on hand. this one is stuffed with poly fiber fill, which is lightweight and holds its shape nicely, but i have also used cotton batting (better for the environment but it compresses over time) and random scraps of fabric (a great way to store my random fabric scraps! but oh man it was so heavy)

you can see from the side view more of those construction details that i mentioned
