I had a really rough times during childhood and hp was my escape. It broke my heart to realize the story & fandom I found comfort, stability, and friendships in is now used to fund a hateful and cruel bigot who takes active pleasure in harming a very marginalized group.

The real world harm is much more important than any emotional attachment. This is absolutely a case of being unable to separate the art from the artist.

I’ve loved Harry Potter since I was about eight. I love the stories and the characters. I continued to love it until a few years ago. Since then I’ve accumulated a huge amount of merch and Legos. I would love to continue buying Harry Potter stuff if it weren’t for that woman. My parents usually get me Harry Potter stuff for my birthday and I told them I will no longer be buying harry potter merchandise because I will not have contributed to rhe money in her pockets. I have trans friends. Shes hurting people i care about and thats more important than my love for the franchise. My mom scoffs at me for it. Saying I should just separate art from artist. I can’t when that woman is trying to make people more miserable than they are. I would love to separate art from artist. But I can’t. I won’t. I love the Harry Potter franchise. But I love my people more. I just want people to understand that if I can ‘toss away something from my childhood’, so can they.

The fact is that you can't separate the art from the artist while the artist is using the profit to actively harm people.

Anything Harry Potter JKR profits from. The game? She profits. The upcoming HBO series? She profits and the adults who are choosing to act in it are happy to take money even if a transphobe profits. Any merch? She profits.

And then she uses those profits to fund anti-trans legislation.

If you support trans people at all (and don't forget, we all know it won't end at trans people) then anything that JKR profits from is off limits.

YOU CANNOT SEPARATE THE ART FROM THE ARTIST WHILE THE ARTIST USES THE PROFIT TO ACTIVELY HARM PEOPLE

jkr really didn’t appreciate the found family trope. she wrote like she thought it was important, but blood always ended up meaning more to the characters.
