neil's sexuality is so interesting and complex, i love it so so so much. he doesn't swing. he has trauma from his mom trying to beat all interest in women out of him. he experiences a degree of attraction to women but doesn't feel anything kissing them. he jerks off sometimes and basically sees it as system maintenance. it never would have occurred to him to be attracted to andrew if andrew didn't bluntly say he'd blow him and then later kiss him. he doesn't think to initiate anything sexual, it just doesn't occur to him to do so, andrew has to cue him in and then he'll drop everything to make out. he still doesn't swing, it's just andrew.

Obviously there is so much interesting in the Neil/Jean dynamic but what I'm currently obsessing over is the way Neil let's Jean see the tattered bloody and mad parts of Nathaniel Wesninski no one else gets to see.

Neil doesn't want the foxes to know Nathaniel, Kevin is too obsessed and too cowardly to want anything to do with him. Andrew would and does see him but his promises and the future they imply belong to Neil Josten

Other than Andrew, only Jean Moreau sees Neil without the mask, sees the madness in his smile, the casual and easy violence, the bloody heart that beats despite it all.

Like, yes its very funny when Jean calls Neil out for being an ill-bred cretin, but it's important to note he doesnt do that to be exaggerating or insulting, he does it because that's the side of him Neil let's him see that everybody else only gets flashes of. Jean is just calling what he's seeing not realizing most people don't get such a clear view.

Socmed au part 5!!! (Part 4)

I have a lot to explain I KNOW. I’m sorry apparently I’m incapable of writing silly happy fun stuff, it’s the bane of my existence. im sorry about the twinyard fight!! I’m especially sorry that I didn’t move that plot along after the beginning, I have a couple scenes planned to progress that plot and make things happy again but I was just too exhausted to write it this week so I will absolutely include it in part 6!! Coming out who knows when!! I don’t know what happened to Kevin’s profile pic and I’m too tired to fix it so let’s assume Neil gave him a profile pic that was the exact shade of white as the header ig. Ummm I based Jeremy’s experience with homophobic fans off of real life things I’ve seen happen regarding queer people and pride in the sporting world, the hockey world mostly. I wanted to make it really really clear that I wasn’t trying to diminish the experience of queer WOMEN in sports by talking about the backlash men face, and I know there’s a lot of nuance to this debate that I didn’t address because I didn’t really know how to. Exy is a mainstream, very popular co-Ed sport, and it was hard for me to draw parallels between fan responses in real life to fan responses in a world where people just accept sports that aren’t segregated by gender. So yeah, if anyone has any problems with the way I addressed this I’m sorry, feel free to dm me if you have any concerns!

ahhh thank you guys for all the love from the last posts! I love that you guys appreciate these silly little posts bc I love making them!! I added some andreil to this one bc we all deserve good things in life, and frankly the Minyard-Josten rivalry is one of my favorite things to come out of this fandom so I had to add it!

also I’m gonna add a tw for homophobia in the tags because even writing the very mild stuff I added made me feel queasy, especially during Pride month. I guess the implication is fans are being homophobic to Jeremy but it’s off screen ok guys just trust.

The fact that after the incident between Andrew and Allison where he almost killed / seriously hurt her, Neil was filled with so much rage for the monsters.

He was angry at Aaron because he was blind to the role he had to play in Andrew attacking Allison.

He was angry at Nicky and Kevin for being useless when faced with it.

He was angry at himself for not seeing it sooner.

But he never mentioned that he was angry at Andrew. Never Andrew.

No one talk to me.

I've been re-reading TKM and I can't stop thinking about that bus ride to Binghamton University because it's so revealing in so many different ways:

Andrew is left all alone in the back of the bus and it bothers Neil. "Neil knew [Andrew] likely wouldn't notice or care that he'd been abandoned, but for some reason the thought rankled him."

It rankles him so much, he practically fights Kevin to get to Andrew. Kevin is all like "Get back here & listen to me prattle about strategies that you heard all about already" and Neil is like NO and it just drags on and on. Neil was prepared to have a physical altercation with Kevin if it meant he could get to Andrew.

Then Neil just stares at Andrew, all smitten. "Maybe it was the sunlight streaming through the window, making Andrew's pale hair shine brighter and his hazel eyes seem almost gold. Whatever it was, it was disorienting." This is from a man who didn't even give us a description of Katelyn or like 98% of the other people in the books.

Andrew understands precisely what Neil's staring means, because he tells him, "I told you not to look at me like that."

Then they proceed to talk for 3 entire hours and Neil doesn't even realize that much has time passed. It's a surprise to him. Neil opens up first, and "Andrew let him ramble. He never once took his eyes off Neil's face or looked like he was mentally tuning out of the conversation." Andrew. Andrew who gets bored of everything and everyone. Andrew who doesn't care about anything. He sits there listening to Neil with rapt attention for hours on end. Holy fuck.

Then the conversation about when Wymack figured out that Andrew likes Neil or SORRY, that "Andrew only wants to kill him 93% of the time", and Andrew doesn't even attempt to deny it. Just says, "He didn't know before I left." And the cherry on top??? Neil corrects him with, "Yes, he did. In November. When they took you away he asked when 'that' happened." AGAIN, Andrew doesn't deny it. Just says, "Coach sees what is, not what people want him to see", admitting that he basically liked Neil for a long, long time and way before Easthaven.

And then, perhaps my favorite line in the entire book, Neil's iconic, "Kissing you doesn't make me look at them differently. The only one I'm interested in is you."

Underrated moments in AFTG upon reread:

- Allison calling Kevin’s tattoo a tramp stamp

- Seth laughing his ass off upon hearing Riko was on the Kathy Ferdinand show

- Nicky suggesting Allison and Kevin hook up and they both react with intense disgust

- Aaron shrugging to Neil coming back absolutely battered from Evermore

- Kevin wanting to ask what Neil and Andrew talked about at Eden’s twilight after Andrew confessed to Neil, then seeing Neil’s face and being like “you know what? Not my business.”

- Dan, Allison and Renee basically fake dating platonically their first year to defy the sexist guys on their team

- Neil finding math interesting

- Kevin giving Neil the most scathing elevator look that Neil feels shame about his wardrobe for the first and only time

- Dan punching a Raven in the dick after they made a sexual comment about her past

- Matt’s mother being so grateful to Andrew for getting Matt clean that she pays Aaron’s bail

- Nicky calling Kevin a brat

- Wymack making Dan the first female captain despite the rampant misogyny in Exy

- Andrew stroking Neil’s back after Neil stood up for Kevin at Kathy’s Interview

- Wymack and Matt being the original Andreil shippers

- Neil giving Kevin his binder before going to Evermore like HELLO???? That was some INSANE trust
