Writing vs Storytelling Skills: Improving Storytelling
Though “writing skill” is often used to refer to all aspects of story crafting, it can be divided into ‘storytelling concepts’ and the ‘actual writing’. Addressed in the previous post: Writing vs Storytelling Skills (link embedded), now I’m here to tell you how to work on that specific storytelling skill.
1. Read a variety of books. Various authors, various genres, the more you expand your examples the better. Variation of reading means you’ll be exposed to more ideas, more ways of thought, more storytelling patterns, more everything that you can critique and help make decisions on how your own stories will unfold. Even take up books you may not like. Give them a chance, and if you still don’t like them then at least be able to explain why.
2. Learn genre expectations (and that tropes aren’t bad). Genres exist to classify stories into familiar concepts. Sometimes, novice writers try to throw out genre ideas because they’re all “cliche” or they want “something different”, yet they fail to grasp why those patterns exist in the first place. Familiar storytelling concepts (tropes) can be cliches, yes, but more often they fulfill one or more of these requirements:
A way to fast-track info to the reader without having to explain every ounce of meaning (Color-coded symbolism, character archetypes, etc.)
To create a familiar base, allowing for further growth of the concept with less time than it would have taken to set up something new.
Promises to fulfill a certain type of story (You can’t say you want to write a romance, but with no romance)
Those things only become cliche when executed poorly or if they cause predictability when the story is trying to rely on unpredictability. A story full of tropes is not automatically a bad story. Writing in a way that subverts expectations well requires having a strong understanding of the genre you’re trying to twist. A genre is a promise of a specific type of narrative– you can’t just throw it out the window and expect readers to be satisfied. It’s fine to write cross-genre or mess with tropes, but be wary of it coming from a place of “it’s all the same so I’m going to do it completely different!”.
By learning genre expectations, you can gain that knowledge that lets you subvert better, or the knowledge to play into it better. You can figure out where the true heart of the stories are and why readers care. You can figure out how to write in a genre that works with your personal goals and desires for the story.
3. Learn best practices for different storytelling mediums. “I saw this awesome scene on TV and I want to write it in my story, so I imagined how it’s going to play out and it’ll be perfect!” No, it won’t, because what works in visual media isn’t the same for books and what works in your head isn’t a clear idea of how it would work on paper. (link embedded)
TV, and other forms of visual media, are presented very differently than the written word. They can rely on music, camera angles, subtle background events– and endless list of things that writing cannot replicate and isn’t made to. Becoming a better storyteller means learning the strengths and weaknesses of different media so you can tailor stories to best fit how they’ll be told. The imagination is similar to visual media, but better and worse. Better, because you can learn over time how to tailor your imagination for the written word. Worse, because it can create unrealistic expectations and is harder to look past.
It’s natural to want to mimic what you see in other forms of storytelling, but one of the most important things a writer can learn is to get over the fact that they can’t translate ideas in every situation. It’s fine to be inspired by other forms of storytelling and what your imagination creates, but don’t become a slave to the unrealistic expectations. Learn to work with the paper, not against it.
4. Stress test plot ideas to catch issues before they become a problem. While this isn’t going to always work and there will still be times that you have to adjust in the middle of things, stress testing your ideas can help teach you where you keep going wrong so you can work on fixing it. There are two main things to keep in mind when doing this:
The plot structure (link embedded): Overarching plot concepts should fit into a specific structure. The structure can have small variations, but there should be an average line of best fit that naturally overlays against the story. The higher your skill, the more you can mess with the lines and have it not blow up in your face.
Plot is essentially cause-and-effect (link embedded): The events of a plot should be a relatively smooth slide from start to finish. Not “smooth” as in “no conflict or tension”, “smooth” as in “logically glides from one point to another”. Make sure you can connect the dots.
If you catch and fix enough of your own mistakes then you can start teaching yourself not to make them.
5. Critique the storytelling of others. What did you like? What didn’t you like? What choices did the writer make and what were the consequences of those choices? I’m going to repeat that last one again because it’s one of the most important things a writer can learn: Every story is made from a set of choices and those choices have consequences. Not all bad, not all good; it’s a neutral term that just refers to outcomes. One of the biggest separators of storytelling skill is how well a writer can work with the natural consequences of their choices.
When you critique others, you look at those consequences and weigh them against what you consider to be a “good story”. While a writer can only critique at a close level to their skill, the more they critique, the higher skill climbs, and the better they get. To become a better storyteller, you should get used to tearing other’s, and your own, work apart. It can help to keep a journal or some kind of record of critiques, since writing thoughts down helps bridge the gap between the mind’s assumptions and reality (just like the bridge between an imagined scene and actually writing it down).
6. Brush up on literary concepts. They’re not just for English class! While some are more technical in nature, there are plenty of storytelling-inclined literary techniques that gaining a better understanding of can improve your own work. Also, literary concepts are just tropes that happen to apply to “work of literary merit”. They’re not fancy or pretentious to include– just study and practice them well so they work with your story rather than against it. (Study tropes too!)
All that said, there’s no such thing as a “perfect storyteller”. Brushing up on storytelling skills isn’t about being perfect, it’s about getting better relative to where you were before (and potentially helping close the gap between writing and storytelling skills).
Keep writing, keep practicing– keep storytelling.

meaning-of-names.com is a great site bc you can pick the meaning you want for a character name and go from there as well as givin you origin, meaning, and an ability to pick how many letters you may want!
Also fantasynamegenerators.com is another great one bc it has a lot of naming categories, so you can pick highly specific names, and even name organizations, clans, etc within your story 😊
Trying to find the perfect name for a character, but you only have a vague idea of what you want, like “he feels like a 2-syllable kind of guy” or “It need a hard consonant at the end.”

A Hero’s Truth
I was born with stardust ingrained in my bones,
And I held a light so dazzling in my soul -
That my mother could not bear to look at me without weeping,
Because she knew the burdens the world would give me.
You were born with strength in your heart,
And a wisdom past your years from your mind -
That your father would not gaze at you without fury,
Because he knew someday you would surpass everyone - even him.
I grew to shine so bright, that galaxies erupted in my stride -
While my mother had her last breath, and said goodbye.
You became a force to be reckoned, conquering any challenge that came -
While your father walked away, without a word, and never returned.
Those were the first of many tragedies we would learn to hold.
We grew to be so great, and the world named us heroes.
I let my light glow so radiant that darkness would not dare to prevail.
And with all your wit and power, you defeated any enemy that threatened the peace.
They cheered for our glory, and gave resentment to our failings.
But no matter what the world felt, we would protect those who needed us -
And they always needed us.
But heroes are not meant to last forever,
Like the stars, I would go supernova in my final blaze of glory.
You would hold the world on your shoulders, till it finally broke you.
Of course we knew our happy endings were never guaranteed -
But that’s the price we paid to save those, who couldn’t save themselves.
The world will remember what we have done for it.
I was a guiding light of hope, designed to keep the shadows at bay,
While you were a beacon of strength, built to defend the innocent.
Our legacies will live on long after we are gone,
And soon our burdens will be passed to a new heart, and a new star.
We will fade, as all heroes eventually do -
But I will never forget how your strength melted to my touch,
And you knew just how to love the darkness in my light.
So let us end as heroes do, fighting with all our might.
And like we have done with everything before,
You and I will do it, together.

I have … a tip.
If you’re writing something that involves an aspect of life that you have not experienced, you obviously have to do research on it. You have to find other examples of it in order to accurately incorporate it into your story realistically.
But don’t just look at professional write ups. Don’t stop at wikepedia or webMD. Look up first person accounts.
I wrote a fic once where a character has frequent seizures. Naturally, I was all over the wikipedia page for seizures, the related pages, other medical websites, etc.
But I also looked at Yahoo asks where people where asking more obscure questions, sometimes asked by people who were experiencing seizures, sometimes answered by people who have had seizures.
I looked to YouTube. Found a few individual videos of people detailing how their seizures usually played out. So found a few channels that were mostly dedicated to displaying the daily habits of someone who was epileptic.
I looked at blogs and articles written by people who have had seizures regularly for as long as they can remember. But I also read the frantic posts from people who were newly diagnosed or had only had one and were worried about another.
When I wrote that fic, I got a comment from someone saying that I had touched upon aspects of movement disorders that they had never seen portrayed in media and that they had found representation in my art that they just never had before. And I think it’s because of the details. The little things.
The wiki page for seizures tells you the technicalities of it all, the terminology. It tells you what can cause them and what the symptoms are. It tells you how to deal with them, how to prevent them.
But it doesn’t tell you how some people with seizures are wary of holding sharp objects or hot liquids. It doesn’t tell you how epileptics feel when they’ve just found out that they’re prone to fits. It doesn’t tell you how their friends and family react to the news.
This applies to any and all writing. And any and all subjects. Disabilities. Sexualities. Ethnicities. Cultures. Professions. Hobbies. Traumas. If you haven’t experienced something first hand, talk to people that have. Listen to people that have. Don’t stop at the scholarly sources. They don’t always have all that you need.

To Love A God
You made my world come alive.
You see, you held the ocean in your eyes -
Though I could not swim, I was lost in them.
And you moved with such a simple stride,
That I could not help but let you in -
Even if your pace was out of sync with mine.
Still I tried to keep up, and was it ever enough?
With every broken piece, I took you as you were.
And even still we did not quite fit, but it was fine -
I could easily chip away at little pieces of my being,
To make you whole, and let you be apart of me.
How very human of me, to think you felt the same.
I gave everything to please you, made it my purpose.
But you treated my love as a grain of sand -
Compared to the splendors of your temples,
And worshipers catering to your ever beck and call.
You loved to torment me, remind me of my weakness -
That I would never be enough, and perhaps it is for the best.
Because I cannot understand, maybe I never will,
Why my heart and soul is never enough, what more could I give?
You are a cruel creature, who holds the heavens in his hands -
Yet you take so much pleasure in putting me through hell.
All I gave was never enough, but you didn’t care.
You took it all, and left to find another to amuse you,
And I will not be remembered in the sea of endless lovers.
Though long after I have crawled to shore,
I am still trying to shake you from my bones.
Slowly I am filling the hollowness you left,
With a new heart and soul that is mine alone.
Maybe someday I will find myself free of longing -
For the love that you demanded, but never returned.
But until then I will hold myself, far beloved than you ever did,
And I am grateful that it is human nature to forget and move on -
Because I am starting to keep my own pace, and for now?
That is enough.

Legacy
I am my mother’s child, my father’s daughter.
I have her skin, his eyes, her hair, his form.
My mother’s regal steps haunt my stride,
As I struggle to follow in her greatness.
I hold my father’s darkness -
Feel his shadows in my bones,
And let them guide me towards a greater destiny.
You see I hold her pride, and her shame as trophies -
And wield his smile, and his charms as weapons.
Still I carry the burden of her crown and glory,
And the greatness of his labors and conquests.
I pray someday her kingdom will rest well on my head,
And brandish the tools he has gifted me, with honor.
I know I am the product of the weakness in their desire,
But the strength of their love is what keeps me.
So I will hold the power of their legacy in my feeble hands,
Until I must graciously pass it on, for those to come.
You see I am my mother’s daughter -
And I am drawn to your darkness.
But I am my father’s child,
And I know there is greatness in your stride.
So maybe this is love, or just simply desire,
But I know that when we are together,
I can build a legacy that is all my own.

All of You (Or Nothing)
I knew I would be yours, the first moment your cold eyes met mine.
But there was warning in the way you held me -
As if you knew you could destroy me with a single touch.
And you told me that your love was the end,
But I knew right then, that I would never leave you.
You whispered love across every scar that marked my body,
Called me the warmth that your heart always needed.
And I let you have me in any way you wanted,
Because I was a creature of sacrifice, and longing -
And baby, we were both broken, so maybe -
At least I though - we were meant to fix each other.
But I have learned that destruction will follow the disaster.
And you my love, are the catalyst that is breaking me.
Perhaps if I didn’t crave for you so desperately, I would seek salvation -
Though I know you love the only ways you know how.
And I’ll take the destruction if its all you have.
You release your wrath in waves to send me away, and call it protection.
But even as I am drowning in the sea of your hate, I will hold you close.
Because oh baby, I want you, need you and I’ll take all the misery that comes with it.
So give me your all, since it’s better to have you in the worst ways than no way at all.
You gave me your warning, that first time we met, that your love was the end.
Well baby, I knew the moment I met you, you would destroy me -
So take every piece of me, till there’s nothing left when it ends.

Kore’s Tale
Oh sweet Kore, what a tale they have given you.
Your mother’s screams have rattled the earth, and they call it a warning.
A warning to daughters of spring -
To stay away from men, who rule in the  shadows.
Have you heard how they speak of you?
They call you an innocent,
And say you have been dragged to hell, with darkness forced into your soul.
(They are but simple folk, they couldn’t understand)
Of course they did not see how you strode into his kingdom.
And what a sight it was - hellfire in your stride and unbridled curiosity in your eyes.
Oh the darkness you held, was a sight to behold,
Even that king was helpless to protect himself.
They will never tell of how he kneeled to you,
How you demanded his heart, and his crown - and he would have given all for you.
(And cautionary tales are never what they seem)
Oh sweet Persephone,
They will call it a trick, a simple ploy that you ate those pomegranate seeds.
But they did not see the smile that spread as you stained your lips with juices so sweet-
Just sweet as the kiss you pressed to his lips, your promise to return.
You have been remembered for your mother’s cries, how she dried the earth.
Yet you have made your peace with the cold.
And maybe they should remember the power in your stride,
For there is a reason, they changed your name to destroyer.
(Sometimes, she doesn’t need to be saved)

Prayer (Companion Piece to Worship)
Oh Lord, I have fallen in love with a woman more holy than you.
I find solace in her, and she has named me her new religion.
But surely she must know,
That I have only followed a path of unrighteousness till I first kissed her lips.
She whispers of divinity across my skin,
And made my body her temple to worship.
But surely she must see the scars that mark me unholy.
She kisses sin from my lips and calls it her scripture,
Begs me to sing hymns between her thighs, so she may know of revelations.
How could you, Almighty, let me lead her to the fruit-
Did you know that she would crave her own submission to a devil, like me?
My promise land had run dry till she filled it.
She is overflowing with milk and honey,
And I am desperate for every drop to sate the burn of desire.
She quivers beneath me, calls me louder than she has ever called to you -
Calls me savior, lover, messiah.
Oh lord, with each touch I draw her deeper down my path of devastation.
I feel it in each prayer she leaves against my skin, in breathless whispers,
And yet she glows, claiming of miracles that she could be reborn -
For in her heart I have given all of myself to free her sin.
But god, oh God -
Her only sin, was loving me.

Only the Rain
I think I heard the rain last night,
Yes... I think there was thunder.
The wind howled, and lightening shattered the sky -
Till it broke into a million tiny shards.
And I remember, I’m sure I recall...
Curling my knees to my chest.
But maybe... It was not the rain.
Maybe it was not the thunder that boomed.
And yes there was howling - I swear there was,
But perhaps I cannot say it was the wind.
Still I swear I heard the crack, of a broken sky.
In the night, I’m sure I saw a million tiny shards -
And I curled my knees to my chest till it passed.
I did hear it, though the rain was only mine.
I know there was the boom of his anger,
And mama... oh mama -
Your howls rang through the house all night.
I saw it, a million tiny shards -
Broken, shattered across the floor.
And here I remain safe, with my knees curled to my chest.
I heard the rain last night,
Yes - just the rain.

Beware
He has been forged from the spoils of war,
And his mind knows no peace -
Only the emptiness of victories, that have left his body scarred.
His hands have been fashioned into knifes,
To crave the touch of bloodshed,
And he fights for no honor, no glory - only to live to fight another day.
But beware,
For there is someone far more dangerous than him.
She will cause his heart to stop flickering to the rhythm of war drums,
And instead to the thrum of her laughter.
He will find his hollow soul filled with her light,
And she will hold him - make him soft in her arms.
For when a man bred for war falls in love,
He will proclaim her his Queen, and fight for her, only her, alone.
And he will destroy anyone who threatens her crown.

Top 10 Tips for Actually Writing
for the writer who can’t seem to write.
Buy a pencil and paper. Get a writing program and a keyboard.
Spill all your ideas into a notebook that will never see the light of day. Write down literally every idea you have that even sort of relates to the scene/chapter/book that you want to write until your thoughts converge on a pointed attack.
Quality vs. Quantity? No competition. Quantity all the way. The more you write, the better you will know your story. Worry about Quality LATER.
Think about where the idea came from. Go there. Set up a cardboard box and live there. This is your home now.
What is the coolest, most self-indulgent thing you can think of? That’s what you want to write at this point, until you get some steam.
Short-term goals, my friends. And by short-term, I mean a minute from now, ten seconds from now. What are you going to do to write RIGHT NOW? Stop thinking about an hour from now, stop thinking about a day from now.
This is not a book. This is not a book. You are not writing a book. You are writing a story. A story is much easier to take bites out of than a book. A book is a big, scary, colossal thing. Stories are fun and carefree.
Get yourself a writing friend. A cactus, an old bottle of nail polish, a fish in an appropriately sized tank, etc. Make them hold you accountable.
Set crazy low goals. Promise yourself you will write ten words today. Ten words and you will be the Best Writer in the Entire World to Ever Exist. Accomplishing things is a morale booster and will urge you to write more.
Just keep writing. I believe in you.

Cruelty of Gods
Do you know what you have done to me?
You have left me weak,
A helpless woman only to crave your love,
They have made you my messiah, sent to vanquish my evil.
But you are the only evil I know, and you have tortured my soul.
By godly hands you have been crafted, to bring love - the greatest curse of all.
Now you have done it, gone and filled my heart with their stars.
You don’t know, they will filter through my lungs, suffocating me.
Even now you try to bring peace in your words,
You say our love will spread through eternity - for the gods told you so.
They wrote it in the stars, but I know better.
You see they would not give me someone as beautiful as you,
Without something in return.
Do their cruel hearts know?
How I cannot help but love that you carry the sun in your smile,
Or galaxies I could only discover in your eyes.
They must be sitting up high, praising how they made you -
With the space between you, made perfectly for only I to fill.
Do you think they must be taunting me?
Knowing that I will love you with everybeat of my puzzled heart,
For you are the only one they made to fit the missing pieces.
Will they not care, that without each other,
We are broken?
I know that no one as beautiful as you, can resist their call to arms.
And you will fight, as heroes do - till the very last breath.
Those cruel gods,
I will hate them, for making you their pawn.
But I will hate myself even more, for knowing - and still loving you.
I know they have written you in the stars - their sacrifice.
And who better than you?
For you have loved with all your heart, and I have given you all of mine.
And how sad is it my dear,
That the gods - in all their cruelty - will bring us together,
If only to rip us apart?
