AC Is Not a Human Right: It's a Privilege We Abuse at Everyone's Expense
Let’s talk about something that’s going to piss some of you off…Setting your air conditioner to 60°F is not a lifestyle choice. It’s a climate disaster and shows your privilage.
Every summer, without fail, the discourse resurfaces: “Don’t shame people for keeping their AC low, some people need it.”
I agree. Some people do. Chronic illness, extreme heat exposure, vulnerable elders and those with real valid reasons.
I am not talking to them. I am talking about the rest of you. You’re not being cute. You’re not relatable. What you’re broadcasting is, “I have the privilege to destroy shared systems for my own comfort, and I feel no shame.”
----Let’s Talk Numbers---- The U.S. Department of Energy recommends 78°F for efficiency. Most people can live comfortably at 74–78°F without medical issues. Cranking it to 60°F is extreme and mostly cultural habit or preference, not necessity.
AC is one of the largest drivers of electricity demand on the planet: It accounts for ~10% of global electricity use In the U.S., AC use alone emits 117 million metric tons of CO₂ per year
(Source: U.S. Department of Energy) https://www.energy.gov/energysaver/air-conditioning More?…Okay… https://www.iea.org/reports/the-future-of-cooling
The International Energy Agency that I hope is crediable enough for all you oh so savvy internet know it alls. Here is there my BS sources so that somebody actually thinks about the information that I feel like I have to scream in order to be taken seriously. https://mediabiasfactcheck.com/international-energy-agency-iea/
Every time you lower your thermostat by a single degree, you increase your energy use by 3–5%. Running your home at 60°F while it’s 100°F outside isn’t efficient. It is wasteful.
And it’s Not Just Electricity. Air conditioning units leak HFCs…hydrofluorocarbons. Greenhouse gases that are thousands of times more potent than carbon dioxide. These emissions trap more heat in the atmosphere, making the future even hotter. Cough, Cough…here is some more fucking sources you ignorant asshats who still don't believe that "You are part of the problem. You and people like you!"
https://www.ccacoalition.org/short-lived-climate-pollutants/hydrofluorocarbons-hfcs
So yes, you are literally making the problem worse every time you “can’t live without cold air.” Am I still allow to ironically put [insert image here] or is that going to make you all scream this was written by AI
“But What About AI?” Since everyone looooooooooooovessss to justify their actions by the evil of AIs. Let’s get this straight before the techbros jump in.
All data centers combined, including those running AI, are so far behind AC and and industry usage, yet they are the new villian of the season. I am not saying that AI doesn't have an impact I am only suggesting that you see how easily you are being influence by the distractions you say you are too intelligent to be manipulated by. What makes you think that you are so special to avoid being manipulated?
Since apparently facts don’t matter unless they’re handed to you like a Yelp review, here’s your damn source.
https://www.ifri.org/en/papers/ai-data-centers-and-energy-demand-reassessing-and-exploring-trends-0
Global AC use? Over 2,000 TWh/year IEA, Nature, OpenAI, Google estimates
That means air conditioning currently uses 5–10x more energy than AI. AI is growing fast but it’s not the one blowing cold air into your empty living room at 60°F for eight hours a day.
Here is another kick in the ass you genius internet warrior bards need which is it never had to be this way. So not only are you being fooled…you’re part of a legacy of design failure and denial. Fools who build our cities and homes like heat traps, then sold you AC to survive the consequences. We stripped trees, paved shade, built homes with black roofs and no airflow, and said, “Good luck, hope your AC works!”
Meanwhile: Indigenous and traditional architecture in hot climates uses natural insulation, earth walls, reflective surfaces, shaded courtyards. People dress in light, breathable fabric, move with the sun, and build structures around the land, not against it. But instead of learning from that, we slap an AC on the problem and call it progress.
Here’s what your 60°F thermostat setting actually says:
"I don’t care if I’m straining the grid and increasing the risk of blackouts for families who can’t afford AC."
"I don’t care that I’m emitting greenhouse gases thousands of times more dangerous than CO₂."
"I don’t care that I’m pushing the climate further toward collapse, so long as I get to sleep cold."
Your comfort is coming at someone else’s cost. Stop pretending it’s neutral. We change how we live, not just what we buy.
>Set your thermostat to 76–78°F. It’s literally fine. >Wear lighter clothing, especially at home. >Plant trees, grow shade, ditch turf grass for heat-resilient landscapes. >Support home designs with natural ventilation, thick walls, and shaded facades. >Normalize sweating a little instead of torching the world.
And be angry about this. Be loud about it. Because the AC abusers will get defensive. They’ll say they’re being “shamed.” Good. Shame is a social tool. Let’s start using it for the climate.
Want more data you can’t argue with?

Jet Set Hypocrisy
They tell the common man to recycle, ride a bike, and turn down the thermostat…
Meanwhile, just 10 private jet users could cut over 17,000 tons of CO₂ a year just by flying half as much.
That’s the same as: 🌲 Planting 800,000 trees 🚗 Taking 3,800 cars off the road 🏠 Powering 1,000 homes for a year
Top 10 Private Jet Users in 2024
Estimated CO₂ Emissions (metric tons)
Eric Schmidt 7,355 ---493 flights covering 612,578 miles
P Diddy 5,154 ---308 flights in the first half of 2024.
Elon Musk 5,105 --- 320 flights totaling over 42 days
Kim Kardashian 4,701 ---236 flights covering almost 240,000 miles
Jay-Z 4,594 ---291 flights covering 286,000 miles
Kylie Jenner 4,170
Bill Gates 3,818 ---216 flights covering over 359,000 miles
Drake 3,437 ---116 trips
Michael Bloomberg 3,423 ---306 flights in 2024.
Luke Bryan 3,373 Almost 650 flights covering 373,000 miles
Climate responsibility shouldn't fall only on everyday people. The ultra-rich need to lead by example.

The Planet Is Dying Because the Rich Don’t Care.
Checking out Greensky and got so angry that I had to write it out...please tell me you guys actually understand this and it is just the rest of the world that needs to clue in.
Everyone’s talking about the damages of AI and treating Teslas like they’re going to reverse climate change.
They won’t. They’re distractions. Shiny, expensive, high-tech distractions that let the real problem off the hook. To move a conversation from the real issue.
Let’s talk about who’s actually killing the planet. Because it’s not you. It’s not me. It’s not your neighbor who forgot to recycle their almond milk carton.
************************************************************************
-----The richest 1% of the global population emit more carbon than the bottom 66% combined.
That’s right. While you’re stressing over paper straws and reusable grocery bags, billionaires are flying private jets from conference to conference to talk about how to fight climate change.
Source: https://www.oxfam.org/en/press-releases/carbon-emissions-richest-1-percent-more-double-emissions-poorest-half-humanity
-----The U.S. military is the world’s biggest institutional polluter.
It uses more fossil fuels than entire countries. It’s not regulated by the Paris Agreement. No one talks about it.
Source: https://watson.brown.edu/costsofwar/files/cow/imce/papers/2019/Pentagon%20Fuel%20Use%2C%20Climate%20Change%20and%20the%20Costs%20of%20War%20Final.pdf
-----100 companies are responsible for 71% of all global industrial emissions since 1988.
You read that right. One hundred companies. Chevron, ExxonMobil, BP, Shell and they knew what they were doing.
They didn’t stop. They funded climate denial.
Source: https://www.cdp.net/en/press-releases/new-report-shows-just-100-companies-are-source-of-over-70-of-emissions
-----EVs don’t fix this.
Most electricity still comes from fossil fuels (60% in the U.S.) Lithium mining destroys ecosystems and drains water from Indigenous lands. Rich countries just export pollution to the Global South
Electric cars might reduce your footprint, but they’re still built on extractive systems. And guess what? The richest 1% will just buy more of them. More land, more energy, more mining.
Source: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-021-24487-w
-----Efficiency doesn’t mean less. It often means MORE. This is called the Jevons Paradox: when things get more efficient, consumption often goes up.
We’re consuming 4x more materials now than in 1970.
Source: https://www.greenchoices.org/news/blog-posts/the-jevons-paradox-when-efficiency-leads-to-increased-consumption
-----Billionaires emit over a million times more carbon than the average person.
But sure, tell me more about my thermostat.
Source: https://www.oxfam.org/node/21337
************************************************************************
The only real solutions are the ones the rich fear most:
End fossil fuel subsidies
Tax the carbon billionaires
Ban private jets
Invest in Indigenous land rights
Degrowth for the wealthy, not the poor
Global climate reparations
This is not about personal choices. This is about power.
Until we stop chasing trending topics and misinformation to cause conflicts of opinions, we will keep losing time. We will keep losing species. We will keep losing lives.
Climate change is class war. And the side with all the money is winning because we’re busy arguing over compost bins while they’re torching the planet for profit.

I kind of wish you could rename a generation. Like, what even is “Millennial” supposed to mean? It feels so off for us—those of us born around the turn of the millennium. Gen Y, sure, that’s fine, but I always thought it should’ve been Generation Why.
See what I did there?
It just fits. It's cool in a very cool kind of way, but also it just makes sense. We are a generation that asks why. Why is it this way? Why can't it be different? Why has no one changed this yet?
I’ll claim it. I’m Gen Y. Born in 1991, in all the best ways. That year has some great history behind it, but I guess every birth year does, right? So many things happening that shape your life before you even know how to spell your own name.
I remember thinking a lot about that during early 2020. I was pregnant then, expecting my son in June. And I just kept wondering what kind of world am I bringing this baby into? A sentiment that a lots of parents every generation share. There was so much uncertainty. So many things I wanted to protect him from. And it all felt so wildly different from my daughter’s birth, where at least 20 people met her on her first day earthside.
No exaggeration, my family literally stayed in an RV in the hospital parking lot. They didn’t want to overwhelm me but also wanted to be right there, ready to run and grab anything I needed. Including, yes, a much-needed Taco Bell run after almost a full day of labor.
She wasn’t the first grandchild, not in either family, but both sides are big and love an excuse to celebrate. Her birth felt like a party.
My son didn’t get any of that. It was just us. We had just moved to a new state. One that made more sense for a growing family trying to survive on one income. It was the right call, but we gave up proximity to our people. Then travel got restricted, everything changed, and suddenly we were alone. The fear was everywhere. The playgrounds had caution tape, the news was relentless, and people were dying.
It felt so heavy. And in that contrast, I kept thinking about how much had shifted.
But seriously, the word Millennial doesn’t age well. It conjures up this image, a caricature, and really out-of-date, out-of-touch, tech-obsessed kids who say “you just don’t get it” and talk about “vibes” while refusing to make eye contact. Like that’s still how we’re seen. It hasn’t grown with us. And yet… here we are, still being labeled like we’re all wearing ironic T-shirts and living in our parents’ basements.
So when I ask why I can’t want what I want or expect what I expect, suddenly I’m the entitled Millennial? No. What I want, what I expect, is to be respected. To be seen. To not be treated like a total idiot. Is that really so outrageous?
Generation Why. That’s who we are. We’ve been asking the questions no one wanted to ask. We are the new wave of thinkers. And now that we’re grown, we're looking around like 'How did this all go so wrong'? How did it get like this? And to the generations before us: what happened? What made you stop asking the hard stuff?
Still I believe most people are doing their best. Or I hope they are. I hold onto that. It makes the world easier to be in. I like to think that if someone meets me, they’ll give me the same benefit of the doubt I give them. That they won’t assume I’m being selfish or rude or trying to one-up them when I share a story. That I’m just… talking. Like people do. Like I’m doing now.
When I believe that, I worry less. I don’t spiral about how I sound, or whether I’m being too much. And it helps. Because yeah, maybe we’re all trying our best and maybe that looks different every day. That’s a belief I can hold onto even if someone showed me hard data to prove it wrong.
Why?
Because I can.

I Don’t Know How to Compete in This World
I keep hitting a wall.
It feels like I’m supposed to build something—a career, a project, a presence, a thing that people want—but everything I believe makes that feel impossible. I don’t want to contribute to waste or meaningless consumption. I don’t want to sell something just because I can. I want to mean something. I want to do better.
But that makes everything harder.
Other people seem to move faster. They write better books. They make better art. They can pour energy into their passions while I’m still trying to carve out ten quiet minutes without interruption. They seem to know how to be seen, how to be valuable, how to belong in a world that rewards visibility, certainty, and shine.
Meanwhile, I can’t even write something I feel is worth posting.
I’ve started so many things and abandoned them mid-way. Not because I didn’t care—but because I did. Because I didn’t want to half-finish something that didn’t live up to the idea. Because I didn’t want to add another voice to the void unless I had something real to say.
But what if that’s the trap?
What if the small, imperfect, half-finished thoughts are still worth sharing? What if feeling uncertain isn’t a flaw but part of the process?
I’m trying to figure that out.
So here’s my first attempt. Not polished. Not powerful. But true.
Maybe that’s enough for today.

You know what is so frustrating. More frustrating to me than all the sh!t going on in the world is that I have this urge to create. I am so inspired by writers and artists and the beautiful things they create. I don't want to hear keep practicing and doing that is the only way you will get better. I have been serious about my crafts since I was a child. I have been studying and practicing since I was in high school. 2 decades of trying just to constantly feel like I have no progression. Years of schooling. I practice with purpose. I let myself be free in the creative process. I pour myself into everything I attempt to do and I still just don't have IT. Those of you that create beautiful things I love and envy you and wish you all the best in the world. I don't know what to do with myself anymore because the urge inside me feels like it is going to explode if I can't find the thing that I pour myself into and have someone else say "wow that is pretty" or even "that is interesting" I am instead met with every criticism in the world about how I need to do better or try harder next time. I would give up. I have many f*cking times thinking it was the best for my mental health to stop striving for something I obviously can't achieve. It does nothing for me except bring me pain. To attempt and try brings me pain. To see other beautiful things and be inspired by them brings me pain.
I just want one thing in this life to help me relax, get rid of all of these emotions inside me, pour the inspiration into, and then feel like I did it. This isn't me being my own worst critic BS this is acknowledging that some people just are unable to and I am one of those people.

For as long as I can remember, I have felt...odd. I didn't think that my existence was all that different from other people but the way I think has always been odd. It feels that way even now. When I try to organize my thoughts for others to understand the words become a tangled web and everything I was trying to convey becomes lost. I do know that I have always wanted a friend who could understand me. Someone I could be myself around. I thought I found it a few times but that is just a façade. I thought I understood those people but it was again lost. I never had what I would consider a best friend even though a few people might be upset if they found that out. People I thought I could express myself with ended up letting me down or leaving. I would tell the truth and people thought I was lying. I learned and tailor made myself for society.
When I reflect on my life, I see a lot but I also acknowledge that a lot of my past has been rewritten by the perspective of my present. My past doesn't really matter anymore though. It doesn't change who I am today. I am over analytical and hyper focused of things that bear nothing. I spend most of my time learning and listening trying to find my place in this world and have come to the conclusion that I am nothing. I will never be any of the things I want to be and only will be what I am. I am okay with that but there is something in me that drives me crazy. Beliefs and personal desires that push me to keep trying when I want to just be.
A few months ago I had one of my moments where I thought I would reach out into the world and try to interact with it. I posted on all of my meager social medias to reach out to anybody who would be willing to let me pick their brain the same way I try to decipher my own. Only two people responded. I told them I was going to write about it and I have attempted to a few times because their responses were extraordinary. My skillset is limited though. I couldn't put together their responses into a cohesive thing. Every attempt was dry and boring much like what I am doing now. I wanted them to know that I took their responses very seriously and that even though I don't know what to do with them just yet that they still linger within me. Helping me try to figure out whatever problem remains unsolved in my head.
Their answers to my questions about their art reflected what I have learned from reading and listening to the great people of our times. That life is doing the best with what you have. Taking your skills and maximizing them with their current situation. They both were passionate even though they answered the questions very differently. I still want to sit down and really dig into their answers and why I asked the questions that I did but my odd brain felt compelled to write this all out and thank them for their time and their answers.

If you get caught up in the mindset of "we are doomed because most humans are too dumb and selfish to solve climate change" I really encourage you to watch the first 12 minutes of this video.
I've also done my best to condense the most relevant quotes below.
"The biggest reason why we have a problem, is love. It's that we want to have children, we want them to survive, and so now there are 8 billion of us. And now that there are 8 billion of us, we want all 8 billion of those people to have pretty good lives." "[P]eople are so caught up in [...] the current moment, that you can't see how hard all of our ancestors worked to provide us with a world that has plenty of food [...], climate controlled shelter, and pretty easy transportation to anywhere within [...] 400 miles." "Humans are remarkable. We are very powerful. Give any species this level of power and they will provide opportunities for thriving for themselves and for their children. They will try and prevent their children from dying.[...] For the most part they will walk through fire to make sure that their children don't die. They will destroy the Earth to make sure their children won't die." "I don't want my son growing up thinking that the species that he's a part of is in some way evil. I feel like that's the root of a lot of [...] arm chair environmentalism. I want him thinking, humans are problem-solvers and solving problems creates new problems." "When we solve the global warming problem, we will have created new problems. And we're doing it right now. Renewable technologies use way more land [...], they impact the environment by being there [...]. And I think in the future we will uninstall a bunch of those things because we'll have other technologies that are better [...]. And the people in the future will be mad at us for the work that we did and that's fine. Just like we're kinda mad at all the people who made the world a better place by burning a bunch of coal so that we could have refrigerators [...]."
You can't hate yourself and your fellow humans into saving the world--and if you believe that all other humans are short sighted and selfish and doomed by their very nature then you are far more vulnerable to doomerism and hopelessness and giving up.
As Hank says in the video, the only reason we even know that climate change is a problem at all is because a lot of very intelligent humans were concerned about the possible impacts of fossil fuels on the future and did a whole lot of modeling and research so they could warn future humans about the risks. And we are primarily in this climate change situation in the first place because our ancestors wanted to use the readily available energy from fossil fuels to give their children and their communities better, safer, healthier lives.
Now we are trying to use brains that evolved primarily to deal with relatively little, immediate, tangible problems in small communities to solve a very large, long-term, largely intangible problem on a global scale. As frustrated as I am that we aren't solving this problem faster (and that there is small number of greedy fossil fuel executives trying to stop us from solving it for personal gain), most people are doing their best under very challenging circumstances.
Humans are driven to solve problems for the love of other humans--themselves, their families, their communities, humanity as a whole. We shouldn't base the drive to solve our current problems on disdain for ourselves and our fellow humans.

things you can do as a goblin in the modern age:
treat AI like you would shapeshifters. look out for the warning signs. avoid engaging with them as much as possible. if you can't avoid them, don't trust them
thrift and repurpose whatever and whenever you can
educate yourself on what edible, medicinal and otherwise useful plants you can grow in your habitable space (especially if you've been forced to become an urban dweller)
educate yourself on what tiny little critters are actually positive for your living environment (for example: how to identify non-venomous spiders that actually contribute to pest control, so you don't accidentally kill or disturb them)
treat bureaucracy as you would malevolent fae. learn your loopholes. memorize the wording that will get you off the hook. follow the letter and not the spirit of the law. let them tie themselves into knots with their own rules and procedures
your workplace is the ideal place for mischief; hinder the powerful and support the powerless. learn who is affected by your tricks and plan accordingly
treat ads as you would sirens: don't listen to them and get out of there as fast as possible
claim what little power you have. decorate yourself however you want to. adorn your lair until it feels like home. sleep as much as you can. adjust your diet to feel alive. drink water and listen to music and remember to write by hand. find the magic in the ordinary

I love that Naturecore and Cottagecore got up there. Lets keep talking about nature and the solarpunk movement. It deserves to be heard as a legitimate thing and that more of us are being made aware everyday how we can make big impacts to change the course of the world that we all share. We should be talking about the things that matter! Shoutout to all of the people who kept these things talked about and other important matters like LGBTQIA+, Palestine, and any others where the conversation helped make a difference in someones' life. Much love all around!
Tumblr media
Top 24 of 2024
Well, well, well, look what we have here. If it isn’t 52 weeks’ worth of data drawn from the exemplary original posts you’ve been producing day in, day out, combined with the likes, reblogs, and search data—all of it weighed, ranked, and presented here for your viewing pleasure. In news that will come as a shock to no one at all, 2024 was the year of Artists on Tumblr. But quite right, too, as just a cursory scroll through the fanart, illustrations, digital pieces, paintings, textiles, and more will attest. It’s a goldmine. But this ain’t just any goldmine, this is your goldmine, and we’ve got abundant gratitude for the wonderful work you’ve shared this last year.
Dungeon Meshi won hearts and minds with its cozy feel, its cookery, its cast of eclectic, likable characters, and a delightfully off-center vibe. Farcille made for the sapphic love story we didn’t know we needed—and the inspiration for endless, exquisite fanart. There was much appreciation for season one, and excitement abounds for season two. But there were endings as well as beginnings, sadly, as the much-loved Jujutsu Kaisen brought six years of sublime storytelling to a close with Chapter 271. Good faced Evil, a nephew faced an uncle, and some really liked it, and others really did not. Discourse ensued, as discourse is wont to do.
Television! And lots of it! 2024 was the year in which animation ruled supreme with an embarrassment of riches to plunder. Gravity Falls and The Book of Bill became your fall fixations and simply refused to stop trending for seemingly an age (a Good Thing). Bill Cipher and Stanford Pines both made the Top 24 in their own right as you shipped them to high hell, with Billford coming top of Ships for 2024. Speaking of Hell, Hazbin Hotel was the new kid on the block. And, after a five-year wait, the new kid charmed—it was filthier, funnier, raunchier, and more heartfelt than you could have hoped for.
When it comes to hope, the times continue to be challenging, and the news can threaten to overwhelm. 2024 was no different. But you all painted the dash every color of the rainbow, stood loud and proud, and supported your ever-growing community online and offline in the struggle for LGBTQIA+ rights. While folks continue to voice their distress and concern for the ongoing crisis in Palestine, they also fight the good fight with activism and fundraising efforts across the dash. These may be dark days, but you all work tirelessly for the greater good as only you know how.
Looking after oneself is vital in these trying times, and you’ve all done just that in your own inimitable fashion. Cats still rule Tumblr as bears still poop in woods, and everyone has taken essential time to peruse the dashboard’s plethora of cat GIFs, cat art, boopin’ cats, cats of yore, and so on. You’re keeping things similarly wholesome with some more Tumblr mainstays: cottagecore, and its sister aesthetic, naturecore, imagine a simpler, greener, and quieter time. A time where the breeze billows softly through the long grass and gently turns the blades of the windmill; a time where we, too, might poop in woods.
The only thing more important than looking after oneself is treating oneself, and what better way to do that than gaming? Baldur’s Gate 3 made a most impressive leap from #21 last year to #7 in 2024, as the need for sexy monsters and beautiful beasties becomes ever more imperative with each passing year. Pokémon may have dropped a little from five to 11, but these games and shows still hold a dear place in your hearts—as demonstrated by your bountiful and beautiful fanart.
Here are the 24 most-mentioned things on Tumblr in 2024.
Artists on Tumblr
Palestine
Dungeon Meshi
Gravity Falls
Hazbin Hotel
Baldur's Gate 3
Cats of Tumblr

I didn’t ask to be born, Yet here I am, navigating existence. I didn’t choose to be the eldest, Yet I carry the weight of responsibility.
I didn’t ask to face harm as a baby, Yet the shadows linger, uninvited. I didn’t choose my body’s frailty, Yet I endure the quiet agony it demands.
I didn’t ask for a fractured family, Yet I live amidst its sharp edges. I didn’t choose my birthplace, Yet its soil molded my foundation.
I didn’t ask to feel hunger gnawing at my core, Yet I swallowed my anger, hollow and aching. I didn’t choose these relentless thoughts, Yet I veil them behind forced smiles.
I didn’t ask for this position in life, Yet I rise each day, still fighting. I didn’t choose to endure violence, Yet the memories grip me, merciless and unyielding.
I didn’t ask for this life, Yet here I am—breathing, living, surviving.
