What to put on punk patches when you have no ideas!
"1312"
"Dead men don't rape"
"Trans rights"
"Nazi punks fuck off"
"Someone on tumblr told me to write this"
okay now that i've got your attention listen to me, what you're gonna do is you take your little phone, camera or notebook and you go outside and you look at the graffiti in your city and you look at all the stickers that are on lamp posts, and you're gonna photograph or write down the ones that evoke the most emotions - both positive and negative. You will then go home and look at the photos and either copy the local slogans you agree with or come up with counters to the things that made you uncomfortable or mad. You don't need five vauge anti-police patches when you can have some specific to your area and community. If you live in Poland you don't nees an "ACAB" patch, what you're looking for is "HWDP". It is instantly apparent to scene regulars if someone is an internet punk or an irl scene member just based on what wording if the same sentiment they have on them.
Look at photos of people at protests you stand for (or if you can and there's one happening soon - attend it). What's written on their banners? What slogans are short yet succinct and to the point? What's catchy? Can you make it shorter? Can you add a pictogram to visualise it? What's the sentiment? How would you carry the same meaning in your style of speaking?
Open spotify and set your location as the nearest decently sized city (or google, but google doesn't have your taste profile in mind when showing you results). See what alternative bands play there soon. Give them a listen, if you enjoy their music and can afford to, go to the concerts. While at the venue try to look for other event posters - it could just be a music spot that holds all kinds of events but it could be an actual alternative venue. Is it a bar? Maybe you can frequent it and make friends with other local scene members. Maybe you can learn what your local community issues are from them. If you can't afford to go or are underage, listen to the songs while following the lyrics. Is there a line that hits hard? A title that's a banger? An album that's super cool and just so happens to have a simple cover? Here are your next patch ideas.
If you would like to break out of the bubble of online punkism into the actual scene you gotta log off and go into the real world. Punk is about breaking from the heard and non-conformism, and by copying every cool patch you see on pinterest or tumblr you are accidentally outing yourself as someone who doesn't have their own voice. Try to find it, I bet it has some unique things to say and I wanna hear what! It should be at conversation with things happening in your immidiate community. If you live in Bosnia you won't do much to defund the LLPD, but you can make change in the enviroment you actually live in.
Punks not about repeating the same sentiments like a broken record, it's about embodying them. And I mean actually embodying not just in fantasies of heroically beating down rapists. It's calling out weird behaviour of your friend's partner or helping a survivour of abuse get safe shelter so she can report her brutal husband without fear. It's donating that 2.5,- that you saved buying soda on sale to a local lifeline. It's making life safer and better for the people in your community before you focus on oversees problems.

I know people think that with the YouTube age verification thing, there's nowhere else to go and we're just...fucked forever now.
(which makes sense honestly, I'm having a bit of a panic attack at the moment)
Here's the thing though, it's not over. WE'RE NOT DOOMED.
I remember a couple years ago when Twitter got taken over and everyone was scrambling to find a replacement. There was a real fear that none of them were big enough to compete.
Fast forward to now, we have Bluesky. And at the time, I heard people saying "oh it's too small, it's too niche", but it's grown so much since then! Why? Because people didn't just resign themselves to Twitter when it went to shit, TENS OF MILLIONS OF PEOPLE packed up and went somewhere better.
I don't have a crystal ball, I can't predict the future, but if the enshittification of YouTube keeps up, I have a feeling that an alternative is going to pop up sometime in the future.
Obviously we need to keep the pressure on YouTube. Use the tactics that we've been using on Mastercard and Visa. Let our opposition to the Age ID Requirement be known by submitting feedback, calling, emailing, etc. We have to SWAMP THEM with complaints, make their lives that much more difficult until they let up.
And I also want people to know that we're not screwed yet.

crazy idea
so i live in a highly conservative, religious, yeehaw gold-ole boy mama sweet tea, middle of nowhere town in the midwest, and the music scene here is predominantly country or gospel. Could/Should I go undercover with my hxc punk band disguised as a country band and play in the park in the middle of the most conservative, religious, yeehaw gold-ole boy mama sweet tea, middle of nowhere town in the midwest?

I am sick and tired of this ai "inovation" the censorship, and the wrecking of the environment because corporations are too lazy and too greedy to let people keep paying jobs. The boomers and tech bros have ruined the world before we could have a say and now we have to fix it. stop using ai, boycott youtube on august 13th, let them know we are done with this rampant greed and frankly just dumbassery.

i agree, and also use the "poser system" which is like a grading of how poser someone is. example:
poser (is an actualy poser, doesnt know and doesnt want to know anything about the thing they're posing)
lightweight (listens to popular bands of said genre or popular things of wahtever)
midweight (knows bands with 650k-900k monthly listeners, and knows heavier stuff exists and might actually care about the genre, just not knowledgable)
heavyweight (diehard, and listens to the heaviest of the stuff, not popular bands, everything, etc)
but yea fr
We really gotta bring the term “Poser” back into popular use.

proposition
so the term poser has been ruined and kinda overused by metal/punk groups since like 2000 something so i propose the poser scale. it goes as follows
poser (wears the shirts but doesnt know the band on them, just likes the image etc,)
lightweight (listens to only the popular artists of said genre, metallica, ramones, etc)
middleweight (a good mix of some popular bands, and some lesser known bands but they still have like 700k-900k monthly listeners. might be aware of heavier bands)
heavy weight (either listens to exclusively the heaviest most underground bands first, or builds up to them)
lmk if this should be implemented

Tumblr media
i had my perspective changed recently by some punks on tumblr that were more educated/involved in the scene than i currently am. The information they gave me has made me realize that my previous argument of punk being more idealogy than music doesn't really check. Like think of it, there are MULTIPLE types of punk scenes/genres and they all have different ideas of punk. Like sure a lot of the scenes can agree bigotry and capitalism are bad but that doesn't mean that's the sole idea that carries the entire punk community. like pop punk, (if you count it as punk or not) tends to not dwell on political issues too hard (depending on the band) and focuses more on angst with growing up or being an adult. I could go on comparing and contrasting diferent scenes and genres but i think you get the point. and to those like me that REALLY are into punk but just are having trouble getting to shows right now, i'd advise not to worry and that you'll find your way to them sooner or later if you REALLY are serious about it. And that group of punks aren't wrong either, without going to shows, online punk is just a big arts and crafts thing. Like no hate at all to anyone but they're right, if you're serious about punk try to go to shows, if you somehow can't (strict parents smth or rather) at least do the bare minimum and research the history and watch shows on channels like hate5six or channels associated with scenes in your state/province. but yea uh, idk. without going to shows and helping the local bands out, what does the scene become? It would die, and become nothing but digital consumerism so please if you can, go to shows, i plan on doing so too very very soon. (i'll be sure to post about it:] )

shows n stuff
so im mentally preparing to go to the first hxc show in a city nearby which hasn't had one in like 30 years or smth, and while im thinking about it i figured i'd like nonlocal "shows" i've seen and like festivals and stuff and bands i wanna see cuz why not lmao
I've seen:
200 Stab Wounds
PeelingFlesh
Overkill
Exodus
Testament
Metallica
Suicidal Tendencies
Converge
Hatebreed
Municipal Waste
Gatecreeper
Rob Zombie
Alice Cooper
My own band (Dystopian Outfit, but i dont really count it cuz it was in my grandma's garage and was so poorly advertised that only the drummer's brother showed up. But yea props to my grandma for hosting regardless cuz she seems like the only one in my family okay with my interest in hxc and metal)
bands I want to see (even if they split or smth):
DryRot (seeing them at the local show)
Circus
Blunt Impact
Sunami (yea i know basic take but i think it would be sort of interesting)
Haywire
SLUG
S.M.I.L.E.
Scowl
Speed
Terrorizer
Insect Warfare
Modern Baseball (pls come back)
Dystopia (and no, i didn't get into them because of tiktok even tho im a gen z)
Bauhaus

London After Midnight
Orchid
Choking Victim
Limp Bizkit (yes you read that correctly and no im not an ignorant frat boy)

yea thats fair tbh, and the bullying thing was more about some other person i forget their username basically just talking smack about some band of highschoolers just because they were theater kids or smth. but yea i get your points and stuff honestly respect. I have witnessed the digital consumerism you're talking about and yea it's scary and rampant. I guess a lot of my frustration is that i want to be a part of the scene in person but its like i cant get anywhere and there's no one else that cares in my small town (i know excuses, excuses) yet. I plan on going to shows, as there is one coming up soon and i hope i can make it (its some old head hxc guys that haven't played in 30 years and when they left the scene died for that area. Im hoping this brings back the localish scene and i can hang there with my band and stuff). so yea sorry for being a dick i feel a lot of that was a little misguided and unorganized on my part and thanks for trying to educating those who are new, or dont get it yet!
i swear punk elitists are overcompensating for smthhhh...
like fr i saw one downplaying the political side of it and saying it was music based and more about "getting shitty tattoos and drinking buttloads of beer". Yeah, hey newsflash: PUNK IS AN IDEOLOGY!!! it is based off of that, and the music compliments the ideology.
and these are the same people that all hang around each other on tumblr to bully new punks and people that don't quite get it yet. like wow im so sorry i cant walk to the local punk show three hours away, its america everythings spread out and im stuck in redneckville, not everywhere is "great" Britain or california. how do you think scenes start? people who agree with the ideals of punk, and they get bands going and have a community. So yea, idgaf if you see me or anyone else as a punk but god just dont be an ignorant prick. Looking at you all the people that were trashing on a pro-trans post because "oH mY gOd iT uSeD tHe WrOnG aNaRcHy sYmBoLL!!!"
Grow a pair, stay punk (or not).
