On this day last year, 4 July 2016, I co founded @thetestimonyprojectdc, with one of my good friends, almost no coins, a dream and a vision for social change through filmmaking and this bilingual, multimedia initiative. Today, I am celebrating by myself the founding of my passion project and the day when I became a co-founder, executive director/lady boss/la jefa, and filmmaker. I still have almost no coins, because being a co founder in your twenties, it involves being really poor so you can see your dreams come to fruition. Happy 1 year anniversary for the founding of @thetestimonyprojectdc!! Since I am not with my family in Maine, and I am having a staycation here in the District for the second year in the row, I am starting a new tradition. Today is the first anniversary for the founding of @thetestimonyprojectdc, so these will be some celebratory tacos al pastor. One year ago today, one of my closest friends and me, we began filming for our documentary, "The Testimony Project" and we began our efforts to formalize our efforts to create positive and sustainable social and political change surrounding sexual and gender based violence, here in the United States and around the globe. It was the 4th of July 2016, a cool, rainy day here in the District, when I set up our bilingual website (link in bio-www.thetestimonyprojectdc.com), in my apartment. After Tanya left after filming and a lunch date at Tryst, I holed up in my bedroom in my apartment and I set up our site, social media accounts and email account. I began to write our story down and begin to craft the foundation for our project. Less than a month after founding The Testimony Project DC, I was in talks for a film production and distribution agreement for our documentary film. I am soaking guajillo chiles overnight for this smoky, 3 chile sauce from @bonappetitmag for homemade tacos al pastor for the 4th of July. These are two tweets which sum up what I am thinking about what is going on the Hill. Everyone I know is posting on Facebook/Twitter/Instagram about calling your reps and demanding that they vote no. But I live and vote in D.C. which is not a state, so the lovely and amazing Eleanor Holmes Norton cannot do much re: stopping the healthcare bill. And it's moments like these when I am reminded why I want to move to Uruguay, where they actually take care of their people and have an awesome public health system. Denying people healthcare and these extreme healthcare inequities, these are human rights violations y'all. All of us deserve to have access to affordable, high quality, culturally competent, and equitable healthcare. If you do not believe me, read the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights. I love D.C. and will always love the District, its home, my city, but I HATE, that since we are not a state, we do not get any say in the federal legislation made in our city, which impacts us and the nation. It's time for #dcstatehood, we need to become the #51ststate. Thank you @feministastic for posting this. I am tired of feeling like I need to convince them of the fact that people have certain human rights and deserve to be treated with respect and dignity. It's why I am done with trying to do this political debate stuff with people who will never acknowledge my existence as an LGBTQ+, disabled, neurodivergent, person, woman, etc. It has taken me to accidentally going out on dates with Pinochetistas-yeah there are chilenos who still support Pinochet's violent, repressive military dictatorship and Trump supporters who are trash, that I decided to take my saying that "I ain't got time for pendej@s" truly to heart. I ain't got time for people who do not believe I should exist, should enjoy basic rights and protections under law or do not believe my friends/family/people should enjoy this. I ain't got time for people who choose to not have a heart, not have empathy or compassion for other human beings. Bless y'alls hearts is all I have to say, since if y'all keep going on that path, y'all should expect people to memes about you and they will not take that shit, especially now, when we can tell the world about how bigoted you are and publicly shame y'all.
