Berlin isn’t pretty. It’s a city where stunning buildings are masked by ugly concrete flats. Nature exists but it’s surrounded by graffitied walls and trashy posters. When I first visited Berlin six years ago, I turned my nose up at it. But now I’ve changed my tune – I have accepted Berlin as a jolie laide city and if you can do the same, then you’ll be sure to fall in love.

What makes Berlin is the fact that it’s not trying to be cool, it just is. Like the people that live there, everything is odd but uniquely odd. If you want to see Berlin in all it’s splendour then take an afternoon walk around the Kreuzberg area and spot the artsy types brunching in cafes like Cutie Pie or playing frisbee in the Görlitzer park.
