Story time! I recently rediscovered this old piece I did back when I used to actually finish/polish things up nicely. I was super proud of it at the time, but I couldn't post it anywhere, because I wanted to submit it to a project that was set to be published, and I wasn't sure if posting it would disqualify my entry. So I submitted it for entry and waited. And waited. And waited. And when I never heard anything back after like a month after the deadline, I went digging, and I found out the project had gone belly-up, but they'd never sent word out. Bummer. By the time I'd realized this, I'd lost the "GOTTA POST THE THING I DID" excitement, so it somehow only got posted to a Dreamwidth account. It's the only post I ever made on that account.

And I only found the old, forgotten account because Martha Wells (author of Murderbot Diaries) happens to have a Dreamwidth account she actually uses, and my phone remembered my 10+ year old login info.

So... have this old, forgotten thing, a little fuzzy because Dreamwidth compressed the crap out of it. As far as I know, it's the only copy I have.

I used to work with a lady who was bedbound for two months because of some complication with her pregnancy. Like if she walked around, dead baby. I would never NEVER say something like this.

If you've ever told a person who's had to be bedbound for a period of time that you wish you could "just stay in bed", DO IT.

Stay in bed. For days. But don't get up if someone needs you to, or you get bored, or you get antsy. Don't do anything other than rest. Just lie in your bed, whether you need to get stuff done around the house or socialize or anything else "productive". You'll have to cancel on people, you'll disappoint them, they won't understand.

And if you're thinking, "well, i CAN'T just be in bed. There's stuff that has to be done - I have plans", maybe ask yourself why you assumed a disabled person doesn't have plans or things to do or desires.

“Oh heeeey! Sorry, did I wake you?”

X couldn’t remember his name. His age. What year he’d been born. His first car. His first kiss.

What he could remember was water. Water, water, water. Water burning icy cold. Water filling his mouth, his throat, his lungs. Water chilling his veins to vapid slush. Water, and five shimmering faces, the whites of their eyes floating in the moonlight as they bobbed above the surface. Or perhaps, as he bobbed below.

He remembered faces.

And despite the slight changes (haircut, slight wrinkles around the eyes), he remembered this face.

“Heeeeya, Liam. Old buddy, old pal,” X whispered to the figure on the bed. Old pal. Old buddy. The words came pouring out of him, much like the rancid lake water that still stained his taste buds. Lake water that now began filling the room. The lake had come with him, it seemed. Maybe it wanted to help? But he couldn’t let the lake get Liam. Not yet.

First, they needed to chat.
