"There is a freedom that comes with abandonment"
Do you think about it? How canon Bruce has managed to in some way shape or form abandon every single child he's ever taken in, that they all have to deal with the when not if of when Dad decides his love IS conditional and that they will never fully fit the bill.
But thats the beauty isn't it? The day he decides for you, that they no longer spend their days dancing on eggshells lest be denied the family they fought so hard to gain.
Im thinking about Dick, the first in everything- first loved, first left, first to fly, first to flee, the first to come right back again. Not for Bruce, never for Bruce- but for his siblings that followed.
He watched them dance to the exact same tune unable to stop the crecsendo and helpless to watch the same story over and over again.
The difference though? They weren't the first. They had him- and every single one after.
It's Dick and Babs gritting their teeth in a grin while teaching Jason what it means to fly. It's Cass with him, promising to save face enough after seeing the same old song start up again. It's Tim and Steph finding excuse after excuse to drag Damian away, to ground him in more than just a mantle. Then Its Damian who denies Dicks offer to leave, because Duke is still so shiny and new.
Its the kids showing eachother that its okay to fall, because how else will they truly fly?

Things mentally "Wrong"™️ with the current main batfamily members
Bruce - Autism, OSDD-1B, BPD, NPD, AVPD, C-PTSD, MDD, and OCD. Suffers from heavy suicidal ideation, self-harms, and has addictions to things too, but he's very good at hiding his issues.
Dick - Autism, ADHD, BPD, PTSD, MDD. Also HPD let's be honest here. He's very prone to allowing people to manipulate him, he NEEDS the attention.
Jason - Autism, NPD with BPD traits, C-PTSD. Self-harmed as a child (cuts), and still does as an adult (burns).
Tim - Autism, ADHD, BPD and HPD. He's practically the HPD poster boy guys come on. Girls that get it, get it. Girls that don't, don't.
Cass - Autism, AVPD with heavy ASPD traits.
Steph - ADHD, autism and HPD.
Damian - He's literally like 10-15 in my version of things so he can't actually be diagnosed with personality disorders yet. But he's autistic as FUCK. When he grows up he probably has AVPD and NPD though.
Duke - AVPD probably. Also autism obviously.
Alfred - Autism. He's an autism dad quite literally. I love him.
#Aka they are all autistic and all have a pd of some kind#They have so many issues they are so dysfunctional but they still love and care for eachother#Sorry for the sad post I just wanted to project onto Batman tbh#Also these are all positive I love you people with pds mwah mwah (I have multiple pds)#We love pds in this house#batman#bruce wayne#dc headcanon#dceu#dceu headcanons#batman headcanon#dc universe#alfred pennyworth#batfam#dick grayson#jason todd#cassandra cain#stephanie brown#tim drake#duke thomas#damian wayne#autism headcanon#pd headcanon#Bruce 🦇#jason ⚰️#blog lore

Batkids being asked who they think Bruce’s favorite is:
Dick: “Either Cass or Jason, though I’m leaning more towards Cass, Bruce has always been a girl dad”
Jason: “Cass, that’s his daughter”
Tim: “Jason. … Did I answer that to quickly? If it’s any consolation I think Dick has a chance.”
Cass: *sign for bat and then sun* “Duke, he’s special”
Steph: “I’m not one of his kids so I don’t know why I’m here, but I’d say Tim or Cass cause they’re my favorites. I would include Duke in this list but he wronged me” *checks watch* “12 hours ago.”
Duke: “Probably Dick, but neither of them know it cause they’re blind when it comes to eachother. I also think Cass, but I think everyone else is going to say Cass so I’m trying to give us a higher chance of getting it right.”
Damian: “Richard or myself, but I believe Cassandra would be a promising candidate.”

Bruce: “Who ever is making me worried or aggravated the least at the given moment I’m asked. Right now it’s Dick because he’s been in New York for two weeks with the titans. Jason would also be in the running but he blew up a building ten days ago for no reason. They’ve all done something they shouldn’t have in the last forty eight hours.”

Give me crime lord!Jason who's actually on good terms with the batfam. Not only would it actually be helpful when it comes to missions surrounding underground/illegal operations (Jason would be able to retrieve way more insider knowledge) but also I think having a supervillain family member that you're chill with is just untapped comedic potential that needs to be taken advantage of.
---
Damian gets into a petty fight with Bruce, and the next day, instead of waiting for Bruce to pick him up from school, he calls Jason, who shows up in full Red Hood regalia and just rides off with Damian.
Of course everyone at school sees that Wayne's son just got snatched by Gotham's most notorious crime lord, so ofc when Bruce gets there, sees Damian missing, and hears a series of panicked whispers about a gun slinging, criminal biker riding off with a prince of Gotham, Bruce immediately knows what's up and just sighs, already anticipating the many publication companies he's gonna have to bribe to stay silent.
---
Sometimes, they need Jason's help with intercepting certain illegal trades within the underworld of, not just Gotham, but just common areas where shady businesses are most prevalent. And when Bruce requests that Jason brings evidence of said illegal shipments to the cave, Jason will smugly respond with "I can, but it'll cost ya"
And Bruce is all exasperated like, "Jason, please, this mission's been going on for a month, I just want to get it over with."
And Jason's just looking down at the crate of smuggled materials, recognizes that it's highly sought after by many rogues (maybe it's machinery parts or rare chemical substances, etc) and ofc Jason's about to be petty as hell when responding to Bruce:
Jason: I don't think you have any idea how valuable the stuff I have is. If I sold this myself in my part of the underground, I'd make a fortune!
Bruce: Jason
Jason: Butttt, if you're not willing to pay me for this, y'know, despite being a billionaire, I guess I could just auction this off to another willing client
Bruce: Jason
Jason: I hear Lex Luthor's been cookin' up something new for Superman. I wonder if he'd be interested?
Bruce: Son, please.
Jason:
Bruce:
Jason: I'll give you a family discount.
And it's just a back and forth of this EVERYTIME. And Jason only does it when he's collaborating with Bruce. None of the other bats have to deal with Jason demanding money.
---
There was one time, during a Wayne gala where practically ALL the kids (except Jason, dude's still legally dead), had to show up. And around halfway through, the Red Hood just crashes through the skylight and then just fucking kidnaps Bruce Wayne, in front of everyone. And of course the gala has to be cut short.
Meanwhile, Bruce, in Jason's custody: I CANNOT believe you, son. WHY of all times would you do this? You are GROUNDED, I don't care if you don't live with me anymore, this is just UNACCEPTABLE-
Jason, completely ignoring him, holding up a tablet with news article headlines about this incident: Bruce, look at this shot they got of me crashing through the ceiling, I look fuckin' badass
And then when the fam (in costume) come to "save" Bruce, in a blink and you'll miss it moment, Bruce catches Cass and Jason whispering something to eachother in the corner and them fist bumping before Jason books it out of there. He can already feel a headache brewing.
And generally speaking, I feel like the batfam could be way more efficient with this arrangement. You got the regular team of bats, investigating from above, as well as being able to infiltrate socialite environments as Waynes. Then you got Jason, who can keep an eye on all the lesser exposed and lucrative activities whilst he keeps the underground businesses under his control. I feel like it would be a win win situation that would be hella interesting to see explored.
#not just that but when bruce gets kidnapped as brucie sometimes jason shows up first & 'heroically' saves him#aka he beats up the kidnappers but spends an additional 20 mins taking pics and selfies of a tied up bruce wayne#jason posing hard while bruce is tied up behind him: gotta leave the journalists good article pics of me when we make headlines tmr dad#bruce tired as hell looking down at a semi-concious kidnapper that jason beat up: i wish u just shot me when u had the chance#jason todd#red hood#batman#bruce wayne#batdad#damian wayne#robin#cassandra cain#batfamily#batfam#batkids#batbros#dc comics#incorrect quotes#hc#crack#fanatical posting

Thinking about how some modern comics writers (Tom Taylor) write the batfam and why it doesn't sit right (this post centers around the robins because of their training but some of that reflexion would definitely fit for Barbara and Cass as well.)
The thing with writing a team of people with similar training and strength is you can't take the easy route of "well this one is the smart one! And this one is the flexible one! And this one is the strong one!" .... which is obviously reductive to all of their characters. Obviously, they have interpersonal differences; Dick, being raised as an acrobat, is the most flexible, but that doesn't mean that every single one of these little fuckers doesn't like to bend, twist and somersault to dodge bullets like an annoying worm on a string being flung around in the sky. They're Robins. Obviously, Jason is the bulkiest, but that doesn't mean they don't all go through hardcore conditioning -Tim is only considered "frail" when you put him between Bruce and Jason, this guy would bench-press you any day, come on. (And DC editorial can lie to us about the girls' weights and heights and make them at the limit of ed-territory even though they're doing parkour and hardcore martial arts every day but I know the truth, Steph's strong as hell, homegirl's got bazooka-level guns). Obviously Damian was raised in the League and is proficient in a bunch of martial arts, but they all received training from a bunch of different experts, including, for all of them, the same guy (that they are all so normal and chill about.) Obviously, Tim is the one who used detective work to figure out everyone's identity but you're kidding yourself if you think he's the only intelligent/detective one amongst the robins. Being smart and a detective is a defining part of all of their characterization, and so is being a leader and a strategist. And then of course with that kind of simplified characterization we end up with Steph being "the girl robin" and Damian "the assassin one/stabby one" and Duke "the meta one" (yes this post counts Duke as a Robin. They trained him and also just cause I wanted to. I love him.)
And even if we make an effort and try to dissect it "this one is the detective smart one! And this one is the strategist! and this one is smart in a more techy-way! And this one is the leader! And this one- hey what kind of intelligence do we have left..." obviously doesn't work either. Duke was a exhilarating strategist in WaR already, Jason's strategic work in UTH and detective in Lost Days is thrilling, Damian is a fucking child surgeon (do I need to develop how intelligent that kid is), Dick was the first leader of the Titans and is always doing detective work like, that's an inherent part of his character, Duke was a cute-ass baby doing puzzles and planning to defeat the Riddler himself, Steph literally became Spoiler to stop Cluemaster (girl knows to solve riddles that would make Nygma shit his pants), they've almost all lead a team at some point, etc, etc. All of this is great and cool and a character being great doesn't take away from the skills of another character! Stark contrasts cannot possibly be the only interesting team dynamics, especially since they already have their own teams of contrasting skillset and personalities.
Imo, best robin team-up dynamics is them stepping on eachother's toes with their plans, getting into rapid-fire brainstorming sessions where they're all finishing eachother's sentences, reaching a conclusion and saying it out loud at the same time, one of them having a crazy ass plan and suggesting it to the other and the other saying "i like the way you think" to that person who thinks exactly like them, getting mad at eachother for being stubborn while also being a stubborn little shit, pulling complicated acrobatics together, and just thriving solving a good old complicated mystery with other people who are just as competent and enthusiastic about detective work as them but not a carbon copy, with extremely specific strength and weaknesses and quirks (like Dick's ability to recognise heroin by putting it in his mouth, Damian's uncanny voice imitation ability, etc.)
Of course, this doesn't even begin to touch the family drama, but honestly we get so much family drama angst with no real consequence rn, I'd really love just a robin team-up, relatively low-stakes (aka nothing taking over the city, the world, no past traumas unearthed to haunt them or parental abuse or secret cults etc etc.) Just a very elaborate murder mystery and a good excuse for all the robins to be there and a story that works with their similarities and their potential (both comedic and in terms of plot) rather than erasing it. It would be so much fun!

Opinion based on funny stuff:
Jason and Damian together would kill the Joker. Very painfully. Especially before Damian learns to accept the no kill rule. If they got along, goons would be terrified.
Jason and Tim together would be horror. There is too much propensity for big ammo and bombs which combined…. Would be chaotic. I don’t think they would kill the Joker, but only because I don’t think Tim would let them commit a crime that could so easily be tracked back to them. Even if Tim isn’t as on the ‘no kill rule’ as he says he is. (He canonly blew up a whole base of assassins. He has a kill count.)
Tim and Damian would also be menaces together. They would searched down animal abusers and put them down. And the only proof would be the numerous sanctuary’s popping up, all sponsored and paid by Drake or Way e industries.
And of course, the new pets Alfred found.
But all three together…
I think that would be hilarious.
And while my previous comparisons may suggest that their mayhem would be extreme, I think all of three of them would cancel eachother out.
They won’t commit crimes, no…
But their pettiness and pranks will make the villains turn themselves in without ever laying a finger on them.
The only one who could stop them would be Alfred, and he is actively supporting them so long as they focus it on the big costumed rogues, as the lower goons might die from fear, and then he would no longer be able to hide it from Bruce.
(I have various ideas for how the other bats, especially Steph, Babs and Cass (love you Cass) play into this. Mostly Babs giving them tips, Steph gaslighting Batman and giving the ‘terrible trio’ alibis, and Cass just smiling at Bruce and patting his back as he breaks down wondering why all of Gotham is terrified of his three Gotham-bound sons. She smiles even as she helped them tie up black mask the other night. )
(Dick visited, saw the chaos, and promptly left. He’s not touching it with a ten foot stick.)
(And Duke has already been doing this on the day shift. He may be the day bat, but his shadow magic is terrifying. Goons will take the terrifying trio over that any day.)
(The only thing Alfred had to step in for was their plan to kidnap Superman for the following three reasons: He stopped Bruce from killing Joker, he was terrible to Kon, and he grounded Jon. )

Face of another
FOA fic. Made by dolling
Aunt reader chapter 4
Also this does not look like 1k words but it is I promise😭

“So auntie what is it that you’ve been doing around the world?” Damian asked his gaze fixated on you. “You know, the usual. Modeling, rich party’s, and more modeling.” You muttered. Your eyes focused on the road.
“How come you never bothered to call, or text, or send a letter?” He hissed. If you were just doing the same things you did, when you were living with his mother. How come you didn’t make time for him?
Your only nephew? What since did that make? Oh well he can answer that!
Simple, it didn’t. No matter how hard Damian tried to look at it. From different perspectives, and angles. He just couldn’t see what could possibly make you so busy?
So busy you couldn’t send one ‘good Morning’ text?
“Hun.. I just needed a well deserved break.” You confessed, pulling over the car into your apartment driveway.
“Away from your family? Grandfather also said family should never abandon family.” He uttered, his voice flat, trying to get straight to the point.
“Me and your…Mother, didn’t exactly get along.” You whispered, even just thinking about the memories with Talia were painful. “Even as we got older, she always felt… superior towards me.”
“But from my perspective, you and mother got along just fine.” From as far as Damian could remember you and Talia, always had a Solid relationship.
Even if you both had a disgment about something. At the end of the day you both put it behind eachother to get to the bigger picture.
You and Talia once had a sibling relationship, but that was when you were 12 and younger, at least that’s what Damian believes.
From the rare occasions when you told him stories about your childhood.
“Yes, from your perspective. Me and your mother knew better than to be around you, when we were arguing, our relationship only started getting better when you were born.”
With any other person, they would have just left the conversation there. But Damian? Oh he wasn’t just any other person. If he wanted to know about something, he would find out. One way or another.
“Tt, blood sisters not getting along?” Damian questioned, he’s never heard of such a ridiculous thing. Sibling argued and had sibling rivalry.
But just plan not liking each other, at all?
And by his mother and her twin. His mother, the same woman who constantly reminded him when he was growing up. That family is everything?
“Maybe we should continue this conversation later” you said, not giving him the opportunity to speak.
“What wait-you, you can’t just walk away!” He said opening his door to follow you to your apartment.
“Child, do not try and tell me what I can and cannot do” you peep him trying to get the trunk door open, so he can get his bookbag out of the trunk . he really does look exactly like Bruce and Talia, such a beautiful but sad combination.
“Tim, what did you find about her.” Bruce said, it had been only a few hours since you and Damian left. But they had wasted no time, in trying to find anything about that they could.
“Nothing other than the fact, that she models” Tim said. His voice hiding his uneasiness. Finding any information on someone from the league was hard enough. Finding info about Ra’s second ‘daughter’?
Now that was tough, even for the greatest detectives in the world.
That’s why Bruce was so quick to send Damian with you. He was Bruce’s son, sooner or later. Damian would ‘try’ and put mini car in your house.
Dick had left a little while after you, and Jason went back to his apartment to get ready for patrol.Duke is sleeping, Stephanie is doing whatever shit she does before partrol.
And Cass is already out there fighting the crimes, so really it’s just Tim and Bruce.
And Alfred with the occasional pop up with refreshments.
Maybe Bruce should’ve asked you where you lived, just so he could check up on Damian. Or…to check up on you.
And here you go again, flooding Bruce’s thoughts. It’s like he couldn’t get you off his mind no matter how hard he tried. Maybe it’s the way you look at him.
The way you look at him like he’s not Batman the greatest crime solver, like he’s not Bruce Wayne the billionaire playboy. Like he’s just him.
Like he’s human.
“Understand, you should grab something to eat before patrol.”
Tim sighed in disbelief, Bruce telling him to go to sleep? the same man who Alfred has to continually remind him to go sleep?
“Maybe you should take your own advice.” Tim hissed, he didn’t mean for his words to come out that way. It’s just this random woman, walks into the batcave.
Like she’s some close old friend of Bruce’s? And than clams to be Damian’s aunt! And Damian doesn’t even deny it.
When Tim was with the league, he hadn’t heard of Ra‘s having another daughter.
And the worst of all was, that Bruce let Damian go with this random woman. Even if Tim and demon spawn had a confusing relationship Tim still didn’t want his bother in danger.
Tim didn’t trust her. Not one bit.
“I’m sorry, da-Bruce I didn’t mean it to come out like that.” Tim said, turning around his chair to take a look a Bruce. Lightly stroking his hair.
It was a habit, he had since he was younger. It was something his old nanny did to him when he use to cry because his parents wouldn’t make it to his birthday celebrations.
Aka them parting like their lives depend on it. Sometimes even forgetting they had a child at home, most of the time they would remember when it was time to pay the nanny’s.
“It’s fine Tim, I get your just worrying about Damian. But I can reassure you, he will be fine.” Bruce said, his voice not reaching his eyes.
It was clear he was slightly paranoid about Damian too.
“How can you be so sure about that? We know nothing of her. Nothing…”
“Your brother knows how to take care of himself.”
Hopefully you guys liked thissss! 1k words but special! Because myyy bday is coming up! March 24444444

what are your thoughts abot how Damian and Tim's relationship is portrayed in most fanfics?
personally, although I like the angst part of their relationship I wish there was more fanfics where they're closer and have real siblings dynamic (like u know they 'hate' eachother but they would destroy anyone who would want to hurt their brother)
oh, boy, do i have a lot to say about this one. buckle in, folks.
i feel like a lot of the time, if they're in a fic together and the fic author doesn't like one of them, the other is going to be mischaracterized to hell and back. sometimes... both are mischaracterized.
i'm all for a fanon interpretation of a character- obviously, because i have fanon interpretations in my fic too at least a wee bit- but sometimes it goes too far and it no longer feels like we're reading about the same character
let's talk about Tim.
Tim doesn't have a good view of himself or his standing in any emotional aspect. which is often misconstrued about him believing that he was Jason's replacement (neither he nor Bruce thought this, but it was Bruce's fear), or that his worth as Robin wasn't enough. that's not true at all. i'll say it again here: Jason didn't nearly kill Tim at Titan's Tower, nor did he go there to kill Tim. and Tim fought him back. he even told Jason to his face:
"you can't be that good" "I am."
he knows he's a damn good Robin! he trained with the best, he helps lead the YJ! he doesn't doubt that he was the best person for the job. but when it comes to the emotional aspect of Robin, i think this is where Tim stutters
this is because of how Tim's parents showed their affection.
i think canon neglects that aspect of his trauma, which is why so many people hang onto it. in the comics, Tim is shown to have a lot of friends both in and out of suit. he's abrasive and isn't afraid to ask the hard questions. but he is riddled with self worth issues. his parents were barely around him, they didn't know him well at all. and they loved him, but from a distance.
Tim now sees himself as someone that can receive love from a distance. he is incredibly self reliant, and has been from a young age. he sees all of his accomplishments as obligations. he does well at school because he had to. he takes care of himself because he had to. and in his mind, taking up Robin was partly another obligation. he does his job well because he has to, and he might doubt this sometimes like anyone else, but at the end of the day he is confident in his ability to get shit done.
now, the emotional part of Batman and Robin is where i believe i enjoy a fanon interpretation more. he actually does have a good relationship with Dick, but I'm not too sure about Bruce at this point. this topic is nuanced because Batman writers make him so diabolical at times to the point that i would consider it ooc. but other times they're very close and Bruce admits this. so i replace it in my head with a more stable and realistic version that i've seen written by fic authors very well.
Tim views himself as someone who is there for a job: help Batman. but there is a lot of wonder and awe there. his favorite Robin was Dick. (I'll say this again so everyone hears me: his favorite Robin was Dick. yes you are allowed to have nuance and put Jason in there as someone he looked up to as well, please do. but put some respect on Dick's name!) now that he's working with Dick Grayson, someone he admires so much, as well as getting the honor to wear the Robin suit, he feels more like himself than he has in years. he's good at this, and it's also fun. he meets so many people and he gets to make a difference in the world. yes, it's a job, but it's also very freeing
he never did this be Bruce's son, or to replace Jason. his relationship with Bruce started off extremely rocky, with Tim forcing himself into his life in some way because he believed that Batman was going to get himself killed or get someone else killed, or Batman would cross the line. and Gotham would lose the only person who had such unwavering optimism for them. he and Bruce come to an understanding of being partners but not father and son. Bruce doesn't want to open himself up to that hurt again. but we all know Bruce, and that's not what ended up happening. Bruce would never be the same person he was before, but he is not incapable of love.
Tim would not understand that change. I'd get more into this but i don't want this post too long and i wanna save it for when i'm not supposed to be sleeping and when i'm writing one of my Tim fics for once. all we really need to know is that Tim's emotional intelligence is dogshit, and him coming to see Bruce as a father, and Bruce seeing him as a son, would baffle him. because his parents love him... at a distance. and Bruce sees him every day. that's not how it's supposed to work, right?
so.
sometimes, Tim is treated like a porcelain doll who can do no wrong. many aspects of his canon has been altered by fanon to be "worse" than it is. his neglect by his parents did, indeed, happen, and it affects him deeply. but his parents weren't like. beating him, or leaving him without food or shelter or supervision. Tim was clever enough to get around that supervision all on his own. which is why they should have been there in the first place. (they should have been there regardless). and emotional neglect is still a very real issue??? no one has to make it "worse" by making the Drakes out to be monsters. i think Jack often emotionally manipulated Tim when he was around, and I don't know if Jack was even aware that he did so. (which is why i can see some people delving into that nonexistent relationship that DC gave us, and finally giving those implications more depth. there are a lot of good fics that go over this)
often it's hard to read a fic for Tim because they go too hard into making Tim an anxious shy ball of sunshine. Tim is weird, and he stalked the Bats, he stalked Nightwing, he broke into Titan's Tower before he even became Robin. he's a weirdo. he fits right in with the Bats for that reason. some people make him out to be the victim or some kind of damsel in distress, and sometimes we get to see a phenomena where other characters talk like a book about emotional intelligence that their therapist gave them. which is... fine, if you're just writing to write it, maybe helping yourself. but let's take a step back and see Tim is not like that. he is a very capable person, and his not some "uwu, woe is me, i'm so shitty at everything and if you even look at me wrong i'll cry." i honestly believe that Tim is the type of character to hate crying in front of someone and even if he was actively dying he'd be holding back those tears.
whereas Damian? gets the opposite treatment??
granted, i don't actually know too much about Damian, but i at least try to understand him and his background
he's the youngest of them, and i think many people forget that Damian isn't a reader of the comics like we are. he wasn't going into that family with the emotional connections to these characters and their backstories like we did. he was taught about these people, the idea of them. like how we could be taught in class about people from a long time ago. and i can ensure you that Damian was not taught proper emotional intelligence, nor would he have the best grasp of it himself when he was younger than 9 years old. imagine all of your teachers and also your mother told you about these people and their accomplishments, and then told you that the person all of them look up to is your father. the person that you want nothing more than to know, to see, because the people around you talk about him so highly. someone you haven't gotten to meet yet, because you aren't "worthy." can you imagine being told all your life that you are not worthy to see your father yet? and not knowing if he believes that too?
but one day, you are going to be by his side as his son. i don't want to get too into the culture of the Al Ghul family because i don't actually know that much (i'm sure someone would know more about this, feel free to add on if you want to), but this is important to Damian. it's important to his mom. it's important to his grandfather, the leader of an extensive organization that stretches hundreds of years.
then he gets dropped off in a different country, culture, language, and family and he finds that things are not as he had been told his entire life. his father has many flaws, they do not believe the same importance of a blood tie as his family back home does. they question his entire upbringing to his face many times, they question his mother who he loves deeply. he's nine years old. imagine yourself in that position. you don't know yet what role you're playing in an adult's life, but you want to. desperately. you want to know where you stand. you want a hug. not to mention that Damian actually is a very emotional kid. he was taught to shove that deep, deep down, and not let that out.
too many people write Damian as if he was a "feral" kid which is kind of not something to put on him? i don't like it both because he wasn't feral, he was an asshole. there's a difference. and because it feels like a microaggression?? at times?? because once again... the culture that he is from... is important.
they have been racially profiled for many many years... and yes, everything that you read is political whether you want it to be or not. the act of reading is political. you should definitely be aware of what a writer's goal is when they were giving something to you. you should be reading deeper. again, i'm not from his culture and i can't say if it is an insult/insensitive joke or not, nor am i saying everyone who's made the joke before is a bad person. i have made jokes about Tim being a feral kid before and whatnot. i'm saying that no matter who you are, it is your responsibility to think critically about your media and kindly about other people. it feels uncomfortable to me because i know how wrongly the Al Ghuls (specifically Talia) have been treated by writers in the past. and Damian is an extension of that bias. just look at how many times they try to push Ian Wayne on us. or how they'll pull back on Damian's character development when talking about the Al Ghul family.
this probably isn't my topic to write about, at least not before i learn more about it. but since i get a fair amount of viewership, maybe someone will listen to me that won't listen to someone of color that has already pointed this out many times. with the comics fandom, and Batman fandom specifically sometimes, people don't care to think further about why the characters of color are so often and conveniently left out or forced into an archetype. take that as you will
so! he has spent his entire life believing he had to live up to two great legacies, both of which are VERY different. the intricacies of the Al Ghul family are often boiled down to pure evil by both fanon and canon writers, which dulls Damian's resolve and reasoning for what he had done, or makes it hard to connect to him. he has since learned more about who he wants to be and has come to respect his family in many ways. excuse me if i'm wrong, but i think part of why Damian came so hard for Tim was because Tim had everything Damian wanted. he had a place by Batman's side as both his son and his partner, and was very well respected by Batman and Nightwing both. he's older, more mature, he has stature in both this society Damian now has to fit into and within the family dynamic. considering Damian grew up in an assassin cult that solved threats to their dynamics or positions in power by murder, it wasn't a far leap for a child from that environment to make. he was modelling what he had been taught his entire life.
think about the mistakes that you made as a kid. and i don't mean something silly or funny now, i'm talking something that makes you feel ashamed. embarrassed. hurt. something that perhaps now as an adult, you reflect on as being totally uncool. and i want you to think about if maybe your environment had a role to play in that. maybe you made an insensitive joke that your mom or dad would have found funny, and someone pointed it out and reasonably made you feel like a jerk. shit happens. but you hopefully grew from that.
now imagine that mistake was you hurting someone.
yes, he was annoying. he was bratty, at times. he could be a little calculating shit. he hurt people with both his words and his weapons. Tim obviously had many many many reasons to be upset about his treatment- but I fear that most of his anger ended up directed at the older people in their lives that were supposed to be the ones to do something about it!
and though i hate that Tim went back to being Robin (it feels redundant), i have seen panels that show that the two of them working side by side after Damian and Tim both went through some life and perspective altering events both together and alone, has made Tim see Damian as his little brother, and vice versa. Damian has grown so much and many people just... don't care. no matter their reasoning for hating Damian, it's unfair to not look further than those cutting words written decades ago, or to bring up his mistakes every time you want to be mad at him. and i think it does a disservice to Tim to make him a bleeding heart about this when he has clearly forgiven Damian and cares about him. he rags on Damian like any older brother would, and Damian makes remarks like a younger brother would. personally, i think the two of them are doing pretty good right now
the development of their characters is actually so interesting within the canon aspect, even if they can fumble the ball every now and then. and the mischaracterization takes away the value that their canon relationship has. i personally love reading fics that have Damian and Tim teaming up. in aus where one thing changes and Tim and Damian become brothers later, i think it's actually so silly and fun when Damian respects Tim or thinks he's cool. or even without the au aspect! just like, a fic where the two of them are working together and it's either silly or serious, Damian having a begrudging respect for Tim and Tim being protective over Damian, etc etc, is sooooo much fun
#this got so so so long#but i had a lot to say apparently#again take that one part with a grain of salt#i hope i did that topic some justice#if anyone wants to add on to that who knows more about it please feel free to do so#also also one fic that i think has a super fun tim and damian dynamic is Buzzard#i've recced it here before#i just love that fic#and uhhhh Red Raven i can't remember the author#tim drake#damian wayne#damian al ghul#damian wayne al ghul#robin damian#robin dc#tim drake robin#dc batman#batman comics#batman and robin#erin practically writing an essay again#i have a lot of feelings guys#i think even if you don't like a character you should be putting work in to understand them#and if you still don't like them then that's fine#but if you blatantly don't like them and don't bother to read up on them then you're a hater but in an annoying way#let me know if i forgot a tag im so tired rn

Jason and Duke being secretly eachothers favorite person is like, my everything
Jason's kill count is 20% people who were racists towards Duke.
Jason is negotiating with someone as R.H and the person is talking abt the vigilantes yk, and suddenly Jason senses a tone of racism towards Signal and suddenly he needs the guy dead right now.
Omg yes!! There's seriously not enough Jason & Duke content in the world. I feel like they would've instantly connected when they first met, and so they're just always hanging out. Can't find Jason? Call Duke, they're probably together. Can't find Duke? Don't worry about it, even though Jason won't answer the phone, they know Duke's in good hands.
Duke is like one of the people who don't really have any prior tensions with Jason. Dick was there in Jaybin era and had to deal with his post death and post resurrection, Jason literally attacked Tim in the Titan's Tower, Bruce and Damian are.. themselves..
I feel like Duke would just easily accept him and be chill, and Jason would shrug his shoulders and go with it, and eventually find that he's very easy to get along with. I also think Jason would be very protective of him as well. Like, someone even looks at Duke the wrong way and it's OVER
And I feel like Duke would protect Jason as well in his own way. He may not be into killing people, but he's never afraid to jump up to defend his bestie's name whenever people start making rude comments. I imagine that Bruce says something just slightly wrong about Jason, and Duke gets so pissed that an hour later he leaves Bruce dealing with an existential crisis.
Jason & Duke, bffs forever. They 100% have matching best friend necklaces and the worst photos of each other known to man, as a bestie should.

i really like battinson version of batman, but then make him a dilf, and give him multiple angry sunshine children(dick, pre-death Jason, steph) then give him weirdly preppy murder children( cass, tim, jason )and give him this one kid who everyone thinks is the sane one but he's actually just as crazy and really just gets more sleep that the others(Duke)and then give him a small version of him and his Assassin kinda-wife cause he realised that when they kinda got married they didn't really divorce eachother, who is also emo/Goth( Damian) (like omg)(they're literally the only one who share a sense of style) (I'm dying cause what is the duo of preppy goth father and son I love you both so much)
Also make him kinda lankey but also shredded cause of "I'm Batman" but give him REALLY broad shoulders and he has this little extension thingy on the shoulder pads so they get even more BROADER to make him look more bigger and shadowy when he moves around but really it's just because I want his cape to hang around him with a lot of space between his cape and body so that his batchildren can hide under there no matter what size they come in , and another reason why batman never misses doing leg along with his other routines is so that his angry batchildren can hug his leg so he can carry them around like one of them jueachy drop leg bags

The Batkids + their flags(mix of canon and headcanons)

Dick is canonically romani and since the rroma people have many subgroups,i see him as sinti specifically,Cass is canonically chinese and either wasian or full asian depending on the timeline,Tim is cherokee as Janet was from Oklahoma and moved to Gotham in her adult years(his hair is sported as shaggy rather than long here due to still reconnecting to his culture),Jason is black dominican with specific ethiopian and congolese roots because his birthday is the same day as our restoration day and he went looking for his 'birth mom' in Ethiopia which makes way more sense for an afrolatino diaspora kid,Duke is african american and a hood kid(double meaning based on him and Jason being eachother's Robin as in the No52,Duke and Damian reverse chronological Robin spots),Stephanie is blasian jamaican-south korean with a bubble waffles addiction,Damian is wasian chinese-palestinian(not white palestinian for clarification!!Talia is brown/chinese mixed like in canon, the 'w' in his asian heritage comes from Bruce),Maps is japanese and Nell is a black canadian who arrived in Gotham briefly before Batgirl 2009!Also they're all trans and autistic + Cass is a tradgoth butch lesbian dating Stephanie,Tim is skapunk and solarpunk,Jason is afropunk/afrogoth,Duke is afrosolarpunk and glamrock,Stephanie is a punk earthy black girl and a kidcore queen,Damian is a baby bat,Maps is a scene kid and Nell is indie punk🩷
