I wanted to put out a post asking if there are any black nonverbal or deaf/HoH people who use BASL who would be willing to consult on an animation project?
My junior year of art school starts this fall, and I will begin working of my junior-senior thesis 3D animation, where the main character is a black nonbinary person who, in the beginning and ending scenes, is seen communicating with sign language. I am white and more-or-less abled-hearing (I have Auditory Processing Disorder but I don’t know if that counts), but I know there are differences between ASL and BASL, and I wanted to have a lot of sensitivity around using this dialect accurately and respectfully.
The consultation would involve taking videos of your hands as you sign the ‘dialogue’ I have written, which would then be used as a reference in the 3D animation. I am a relatively broke student but I am willing to pay for your consultation. Please DM me if you’re interested!
Note: I apologize in advance if I have mistakenly used any offensive terms in this post, I tried to do a lot of research but I’m sure I have shortcomings and gaps in my knowledge.

SINNERS With Black American Sign Language (BASL) Debuts July 4 On Max In The U.S.
SINNERS with BASL is interpreted by Nakia Smith, an influential voice in the Black Deaf community, who delivers a powerful interpretation with cultural depth and linguistic richness that aligns with the film’s themes and historical timeline. Rosa Lee Timm, Director of Artistic Sign Language, is a renowned performance artist and uses her expertise in sign language performance and visual storytelling to ensure cultural authenticity.
Ryan Coogler in Filmmaker Magazine: "Zinzi [Coogler, producer] was a full time ASL sign language interpreter. She's got hard-of-hearing family members. So, for her it's advocacy to make sure that we put in closed captions in cinemas. Listening to the dubs, the translations, supervising the subtitles, we're all over that." (April 24, 2025)

The BASL (Black American Sign Language) version of SINNERS is so good! It's not surprising given how important Sign names are, but the Sign names are so amazing! Seeing Grace's (G handshape in the location for mother), I needed to take a break, and Annie's hit just as hard. And the choice to fingerspell Elijah and Elias while Smoke and Stack had name signs further separated them from their aliases!
Sammie's name sign having a repeating movement like a musical beat or heartbeat was also such an interesting choice! And over the heart!!! Ugh, so much thought went into the BASL translation, and I only have the understanding to get so much! I can only imagine how many more details I'm missing that Black Deafies are getting! Ryan Coogler and the creative team behind SINNERS have done something groundbreaking by doing this! I only hope that this level of accessibility becomes second nature for creative minds in the future

You’ve Heard of AAVE, but Do You Know about Black American Sign Language?
Growing up Black meant watching how I spoke. My parents taught me that gaining respect meant speaking with proper grammar and pronunciation. In other words, I wasn’t allowed to use slang around adults. Yet as a child, I always noticed the intricacies and the differences in how Black people spoke when we came together. When I was older and introduced to African American Vernacular English (AAVE),…

Idk if I'm like... allowed to say this (I'm hearing and white) but I was watching the school play today and we had two interpreters. One of the interpreters was black and I noticed that he was a lot more expressive and animated than the other. He was kinda putting his whole body into it it that makes sense? It was neat!

for your followers that enjoyed the superbowl halftime, i want to draw attention to this year's ASL performance as well! big events like this usually have interpreters, but the halftime is unique in that the performance has to be specially made to convey music/rhythm and not just words.
this year's performer was matt maxey! here's another for Ledisi's lift every voice and sing performed by otis jones IV. kendrick's show was legendary, obviously, as is Ledisi's voice, but i also wanted to highlight the talent of the Black interpreters that made these performances accessible this year!
Im pretty sure I shared this, yes! But I still think it's really cool!

1 April 2024
Civil Defense spokesperson and first responder Mahmoud Saabar Basel documents extreme atrocities by the occupation inside Al-Shifa Hospital.
Warning: graphic text follows
The IOF bound a displaced person by their wrists, brutalized them, then set the room on fire and left them to die either by blood loss or fire, whichever came first. The progression of these crimes can be deduced due to the trails of blood on the floor, showing how the person was dragged, already bound and bleeding, into the room where the fire would be set. Even animals were not spared, as what appear to be a pet of a displaced person is found in the same condition.
WARNING: THE LINKED FOOTAGE IS EXTREMELY GRAPHIC AND UPSETTING! VIEWER DISCRETION STRONGLY ADVISED!
