Heyyy! I’ve been reading some of your asks and you always give really well thought out responses so I thought I’d ask a question that I’ve been attacked for asking elsewhere!

I think you’re a fan of Tommy (?) I’m just curious what it is about him you like? Everytime I ask Tommy fans they get really defensive (which I get, as there are a lot of people who hate him and attack his fans) but I genuinely have no opinion on him.

I do have to say I’m definitely more partial to buddie when it comes to shipping (although I honestly am indifferent to whether or not they end up together) but this isn’t really a question related to buddie vs bucktommy.

I genuinely just don’t understand why people are so in love with Tommy’s character by himself when he has like 10 minutes of screen time, are people just fans of the ship? Does the actor have a big following idk about? Is a lot of it people who don’t like buddie, and just like Tommy out of spite?

I’d like to say I come from an indifferent perspective as I’m not actually active in the 9-1-1 fandom (I didn’t know it had a fandom until the network switch lol!) and am more of just a weekly watcher. So I was super surprised when he had such a huge following! To me personally he just felt like a good plot device to do stuff no one in the main cast was able (fly a helicopter and kiss buck lol).

I hope none of this sounds rude I honestly mean no hate to any fans of Tommy or Bucktommy!!!

I've been putting off answering this all day, I'm sorry.

First things first, let me be very clear. The reason Tommy fans get defensive when you ask why we like him is because you're using the same phrases as the people who have sent us death threats, CSA fics, and suicide bait for over a year. We have listened to those people endlessly claim that Tommy is "just a plot device" or that "he only has ten minutes of screen time" or that "people only like him because they hate Eddie". Just as you've done in this ask.

Now, I'm not saying you're one of those people, but you should be able to understand why we get so defensive after spending a year having to defend ourselves from the very worst of fandom.

With that out of the way, let me also add that I do not speak for anyone but myself in the rest of this post. So here's why I like him:

Tommy is funny. He has that dry, snarky sense of humour that appeals to me, as someone with the same type. His sarcasm and dry wit is enjoyable, and it's a good counterbalance to Buck's optimism. He's not a cynic, though. He's realistic, having lived a full life and learned that every action has its consequences.

Tommy is smart. He knows his own expectations and boundaries, and knows when and how to enforce them. He's intuitive. He's thoughtful. He chooses to take care of the people he loves, and gives his all to the task every time. He's resourceful, with a range of knowledge and the skills to back it up. He's not boastful, but confident in himself and his abilities. He's respectful and respected, both professionally and personally.

Tommy is kind. He, like Buck, is a fixer. He's mature enough to know, however, when there's something he can't fix; he sticks around all the same, though. He understands the importance of a support network, because he didn't have one. He wants for others something better than what he had, even though he might be envious or jealous of them having it when he couldn't. He's patient, knowing that discovering oneself is a long process, and one that can't be rushed without sacrificing safety, security, or happiness. He's willing to let himself be hurt in order to prevent others from feeling it.

Tommy is strong. Not just physically, but emotionally. He understands himself on a level that speaks to years of dedicated introspection and work. He's careful, not just with his words but with his actions. He's grounded, with a stable sense of self and an understanding of where he fits in the world. He's flawed, but he's learned from his mistakes and done everything in his power to atone for them. He's guarded, understanding his own weak spots and how to protect them.

Tommy is gentle. His size, stature, age, and blatant masculinity are all carefully considered when he engages with others. He knows when and how to soften his voice, to lower his shoulders, to make himself less intimidating, because he knows there are people who will make a snap decision about him based on how he presents. He knows exactly the image he projects, and he knows when it's safe to change that perception. He's thoughtful, again, of other people's comfort.

Tommy is selfish. He'll break his own heart now to spare himself the pain later. He's scared, because the life he's lived has taught him never to expect good things without the bad. He's a bitch, letting his face speak volumes even when he's completely silent. He's afraid of commitment. He desperately wants commitment. He's jealous. He's petty. He's lonely. He's alone, and doesn't want to be.

Tommy is so many things. He has experienced a hard life, but he hasn't let that life harden him. He puts his heart into everything he does, even though he guards it far more readily than Buck does. He values friendship, loyalty, and trust. He'll go to hell and back again, gladly, if it means protecting someone he cares about. He'll break the rules, the law, if it means someone he cares about can be saved.

He is a complicated, flawed, and deeply intriguing character. He is a study in contradiction. He is proof that anyone can change, if they just want to.

And none of this even touches on why I like him with Buck in particular, but that'll be another post, I think.

You might read all of this and ask yourself, where am I getting all of this? How can a character with only "ten minutes of screen time" provide this much? And to that, I would have to say, you haven't paid attention. He is a plot device, just as all characters are in a work of fiction, but his story is more than just his lines on screen. We met him first in the Begins episodes, where we watched as he evolved in the background. Sure, most people didn't pay attention then, either, but with his reintroduction, that evolution was cemented into canon.

What you need to understand, nonnie, is that a show like this is never going to hold your hand and tell you all of the character notes. They're shown to you, through character interactions and context clues. We know from Chimney Begins that Tommy and Chim became friends. We know from Hen Begins that Hen inspired Tommy. We know from Bobby Begins Again that Tommy made amends with both of them, and were friendly enough that they often went out drinking together after work. We know from Capsized that Tommy is still close enough with them both that Chimney still has Tommy's personal number, and that Hen still trusts him enough not to fight him even though he could blow the lid on her entire stealth attempt. We know from the rest of season seven and early season eight that Tommy desperately wants a family.

Everything that I've mentioned above is extrapolated from canon. Every character interaction, every line, every microexpression, every hint of body language, all of it. I analyse media for fun, and Tommy is by far one of my favourite characters to analyse.

That's why I like him. He's Tommy. It's really that simple.

I can't be the only one who noticed a certain flavor of racist undertone when it comes to people comparing JonDami with TimKon and SuperBat.

Like, people writing that when it comes to either Tim or Bruce being kidnapped or in mortal danger, both Clark and Kon would suddenly become the scariest mf on the planet until they got them back.

However, when it comes to Damian, Jon would be telling the kidnapper to let him go because "Damian would get bored and stab them to death" or something?

Another example is when the Supers are describing their respective Bats.

Both Clark and Kon would lovingly describe Bruce or Tim as 'smart' or 'beautiful' or 'equivalent of a God' or 'the smartest detective on the planet' while Damian.... Has rabies. Okay.

It doesn't help that Clark and Kon would often be drawn to have darker skin tones, while Jon's skin tone is lighter than Damian's (a canon thing).

Maybe I'm being the friend that's too woke, but that's as if they're conveying how POC/people with darker skins can either be the one who longed for their white/lighter skin partner, else it's the lighter skin partner that's being 'very tolerant'.

Mihawk, Shanks, and Robin Hickey Headcanons

Thinking about the Mihawk, you’d have to be Smart about where you put those hickies (thighs thighs thighs-) since he’s always Tits Out and Collar POPPED. I think if he showed up with a fully buttoned shirt or turtleneck it would be more suspicious than him saying the bruises were from training 💀 (I mean maybe it was true - you could’ve been training him to let you fully take charge for once 🤷🏼‍♀️). The thought of him admiring them is what really grabs me in this. I like to think the betrayal that Oda hints at in Mihawk’s background is related to a past love (many good daydreams from this lol) so him healing enough from that to take the time to admire a mark of intimacy?? Feel satisfaction looking at a physical reminder that you belong to each other?? Find comfort in being your partner and enjoying being wanted and owned by you??? Happy brain 🫠🫠🫠

Shanks being the resident manwhore is Gospel dude and I fuckin LOVE him for that 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 here for the energy and the good times lol I imagine that he just showed them first cuz he didn’t care to hide them. Why would it matter?? It’s obvious he’s a man with a large appetite for debauchery both light and heavy and they’re all adults on the ship so there’s no problem. And on an angstier note, having gone so so so long without love, I bet physical reminders of any kind help her feel like it’s real and that’s she’s not just going to wake up and find out it was all a dream. There’s also a promise in visible proofs of love, sometimes even ones as ~scandalous~ as hickies, that you want that love and you’re proud of that love. I think Robin would find a lot of solace in anything that helps her know you’re happy and proud to love her.

James is propped up against the hood of his car when you pull into the space next to his. He's talking to Sirius and Remus, who stand a few paces in front of James, both smoking a cigarette. Technically, they're not supposed to smoke on campus, but you doubt anyone would be stupid enough to mention that to Sirius Black and his infamously smart-mouthed boyfriend.

James turns his gaze to you as your engine cuts out, keys jangling in your hand and he lifts his hand in a wave. You wave back, half focussed on collecting the multitude of things on your passenger seat and stuffing them into your bag. The carrier bag in your footwell snags your attention, heart stammering a little with the reminder of what lies inside. It's cool. In your opinion, a very cool poster. One you know James has been looking for, for months. His favourite band.

But there's a voice in the back of your head, one born of being fourteen and asking a crush out, only to be told you'd gotten the wrong idea. A voice born of years of being lusted after, but not wanted. It's a voice that tells you James might assume you got this poster because you fancy him and find it weird.

And, sure. You might have went to the lengths of scrolling the internet for hours and paying extra for express shipping because you couldn't wait to see his smile when he unveiled it, to watch his eyes crinkle at the corners with excitement. There's something so overwhelmingly pretty and soft about James Potter. You've been living with that heavy admittance in your chest all semester and next week, your final term of sharing classes with James will end and you want him to remember you. You want to be able to say you tried.

But you don't want him to know all of that.

With a glance, you look back to James. He's waiting patiently for you, still talking to Sirius and Remus. The bag crinkles when you pick it up, the anxiety prickling over your skin like a heat rash. His friends offer you kind smiles when you exit the car, bag slung over your shoulder and the framed poster in hand. "Your engine doesn't sound great, love. You checked your oil recently?" Sirius asks, foregoing a proper greeting.

James laughs at the same time Remus rolls his eyes, akin to a love sick fool even when he's pretending not to be. "Ignore him," Remus drawls, flicking his cigarette to the ground, "He's decided he's going to be a mechanic."

In the year you've known Sirius Black, he's decided he's going to be an artist, then the lead singer of a band, then a lawyer, then a pilot, and now, he's going to be a mechanic. You hope, one day, that one might stick. Though, you've seen how much he loves his motorbike and would put money on the mechanic idea sticking around for a while longer than the time he wanted to buy a zoo.

"Oh, right. You can have a look if you like, but Jamie filled the oil last week." You tell Sirius, who scowls at his best friend.

James smiles kindly when you settle beside him against his car, leaning over to bump your shoulder with his bicep. His height difference is nothing, compared to Remus, but you still have to look up to meet his kind eyes. "Hi." He says.

"Hey."

Sirius scoffs, "Hi."

James pointedly ignores him, "What's in the bag?"

Your eyes nervously flick to Sirius and Remus, the former becoming incredibly interested in what's in the bag as well. Remus must sense your hesitation, because he grabs his boyfriend by the wrist and turns to walk away. "See you later, Prongs. Bye, love."

Sirius can be heard causing a scene even when Remus has dragged him half way across the student parking area. You smile after them fondly.

"You gonna make me guess?" James asks, pushing off of his car to stand and face you.

You have to crane your neck even worse to meet his eyes at this angle, but it's worth it. They're so light in the morning sun they look crystallised. He looks amused, lips twitching as he looks down at you. Heat prickles over your skin as he assesses you. "What's in the bag?"

You hand it to him, wordlessly, and nod for him to look inside. He pulls the frame, turning it until he can see the poster inside. His brows furrow, then lift, his lips parting in surprise. Genuine joy passes through his eyes and you wonder how someone can be so readable, so expressive. His beauty astounds you.

James looks at you, mouth opening and closing like he can't find the words.

"It's for you," You offer, rather dumbly, "Obviously."

James laughs a little breathless, the sound sending your heart slamming into your rib cage. "Where on earth?" He asks, bewildered.

"It's a secret. But I know how long you've wanted one, so I had it framed for safe keeping."

"Thank you," James slides the frame back into the bag, sets it to lean against the front of his car. "Seriously, thank you."

You shrug, hoping it's somewhat believable. "No big deal."

James rolls his eyes at your nonchalance. "Can I hug you? Is that too much? I feel like I should hug you."

You laugh, the feeling of anxiety lifting as James reaches forward to wrap his arms around you. He's warm and soft and smells like cologne and freshly washed clothes. His arms squeeze you tight, his nose buried in your hair where he's hunched over.

"Let me take you to dinner or something, as a thank you." James says as he pulls away, unlocking his car to place the frame safely in the passenger footwell.

"Really, James, you don't have to do that. It's just a poster." You wave him off, pushing off of the car and collecting your bag.

James follows as you walk, shoulder to bicep, skin brushing and your heart in your mouth from the contact alone. "I'm taking you to dinner. Not because I have to, but because I want to."

You find yourself fighting a smile, "Well if you want to." Your voice is teasing an it makes James smile.

"I do. It's a date." James tells you, like it's nothing.

You've halted in the doorway he's holding open for you, head tilting to look into his face. To be sure. To make sure he's not kidding, to make sure he doesn't mean a 'friend date'. He smiles, knowingly.

"You're not subtle, you know," He ushers you through the door, eager to make it to your class on time, "That poster is not easy to find, nor is it cheap."

"It's what friends do." You protest, cheeks warm and palms sweaty.

You brace for rejection, for a joke, for the 'I just don't see you that way'. But James rolls his eyes, reaching around you for the door to the classroom, "Friend's don't go on dates."

"We haven't been on a date." You laugh, incredulously, leading James to your usual seats.

It's a nice feeling, a warm feeling, to feel suddenly safe within your conversation. To feel the normal level of comfort you do with James, even when putting yourself out there. James frowns, "We've been on multiple dates. The library, the cafeteria, the coffee shop just off campus. We even went to that Ethics seminar that one time!"

It takes looking at him to realise he's kidding, the corners of his lips twitching up until he can't fight it anymore. It should be unsettling, for him to make a joke of it. But as he sits, his hand brushes over your shoulder, a gentle touch that sets your skin on fire. "I'm kidding, when I take you out for real, there'll be no confusion on whether or not it's a date."

His breath fans over your ear, warm and his voice thick and you think you might pass out, saved only by the entrance of your professor. James settles in, sends you a wink that has you more flustered than it should.

"Noted." You whisper, though you don't imagine James has heard you.

Something has really stuck with me that some Anti Regulus Black person said and I want to share my thoughts on it.

Basically, they said that we, or people that like Regulus have been giving Regulus Lilys characteristics and traits and relationships instead of giving them to Lily and are using this to replace Lily.

From my pov, I can understand how that comes across. Moonwater, in canonical type universes, usually come together over their love for literature, something, that as far as I understand was how Lily and Remus used to become friends in fics.

When I think of this situation, I don’t see it as Lily being replaced, I see it as Remus having more friends then just the Marauders and Lily. I see it as Remus making friends.

In all the fics I’ve read, majority of them, Lily and Remus are always already friends! 9 times out of 10, if Remus has a POV and he is interacted with Lily or thinking about Lily, he refers to her has his best friend.

Idk who needs to hear this but Remus can have more friends than just Lily and the Marauders! In fact, EVERY. SINGLE. CHARACTER. Can have more friends then just the friend groups that they have been assigned to from the fandom.

I personally love the idea that Regulus and Remus get close because of their shared interest in books and knowledge. In fact, I love it so much when this happens. I also love when Remus is the one to introduce (formally) Lily and Regulus. Because they have shared interests! They all have shared interests and that’s what they bond over.

If we just forget about ships for a moment - Jily/Jegulus - Regulus and Lily would and could actually be really close friends. At their cores they are very similar and have similar morals and codes.

Like my girl Lily defeated Voldemort the first time. You cannot tell me that she did not have some deep interest and understanding of Dark Magic that is really not talked about enough. I mean, she was friends with Snape for a LONG time! Even against all her Gryffindor friends and dorm mates advice and opinions. She was friends with Snape for a long time and they definitely studied dark magic together. The only reason they stopped being friends was because Snape called her a slur and began siding with people that would have gladly seen Lily and people like Lily 6 feet under.

And then Regulus! He may not have made the best choices but when it mattered the most, he chose to do the right thing and go against Voldemort. He is the first to have done so! My guy was smart. He definitely knew so much magic that he has likely forgotten more than anyone would ever even know.

Regulus and Lily are both so smart and they would have bonded over their shared intelligence, their love for knowledge and books. Remus was probably terrified the day he realised he was the reason these two evil geniuses even started talking.

Maybe instead of saying that Regulus is being given Lily’s characteristics and traits, maybe think about how this would affect the two characters when put in the same room.

I personally think that they would argue for a long time and then Lily would probably say something that gives Regulus pause and then Lily would gently press on that and then Regulus would go have a long hard think and then come back and hesitantly ask Lily questions that Lily would happily answer and then they would be tentative friends!

Regulily have so much in common but they also have a lot of differences and I don’t think enough people see that because they are too focused on ships rather than the characters themselves and their motives and actions.

I’m not shy in admitting that I fuck with romantic regulily. They are my guilty pleasure ship and I am not shy about saying that.

Regulily, platonically, romantically, it doesn’t matter. They have the biggest grounds for friendship and growth.

Regulus and Lily can teach each other so much and I honestly think it’s the biggest missed opportunity when they are pinned against each other rather than working together.

I fear I’ve gone WAY off topic.

In the context of relationships, the jily vs jegulus idea. I feel like I need to hold people hands when I say this because the two ships are very different.

WARNING! OPINIONS!

To me, Jily is a rivals to lovers relationship. I don’t think they are grumpy/sunshine purely because I don’t see Lily as the grumpy trope. I very much think that Jily are academic rivals. Where James just naturally understands everything and gets good marks whether he studied or not and Lily has to study heavily before she understands a topic enough to pass, like Lily to me has to study throughly before everything sticks and she understands the topic so much more than is really required for her coarse work.

I also don’t think Jily was James falls in love at first sight and Lily hates him for years until she gives in and goes on a date with him. Sure it’s a bit cute but i definitely prefer James developing a crush and not telling anyone other than his friends. I very much fuck with James being uncharacteristically shy about his crushes on people. I fuck with James losing his ability to talk or function around the person he fancies and it comes off as arrogance and a bit of a joke when he is actually being genuine.

I love the idea that Lily falls for him slowly, like initially, she thinks she hates him, she loathes the fact that he doesn’t need to study and he can just goof off and do whatever and still get perfect grades, I think Lily gets jealous of James and thinks she despises him because she thinks he is trying to make fun of her when all he is trying to do is talk to her and get her attention.

I love the idea that Remus is constantly trying to talk James up to Lily, “he’s really not that bad once you get to know him.” And “He’s harmless, Lils.” And things like that but Lily has NONE of it!

I think Lily starts to fall for James when they are paired together for a project that is a big mark on their finals. I think Lily goes into this thinking that she is going to hate it when actuality, James is kind and thoughtful and helps her when she struggles. He doesn’t make fun of her, he sits down quietly and gives her tips and tricks that he discovered when he studies privately, (this would be when she finds out that maybe it doesn’t all come as naturally to James as she thought) and then they end up getting the best grade in their year on the assignment but they don’t stop hanging out, they don’t stop studying together. Lily slowly falls for James because of his mind and they form a friendship and then James would ask her out one day and Lily would find herself stunned because if he had asked her a few months ago, she would have harshly declined but in the moment, she finds herself blushing and agreeing without a hint of hesitation.

And that’s how I imagine Jily.

Now, Jegulus.

Jegulus is enemies to lovers, they are grumpy/sunshine. I very much think that they did hate eachother. They did not like eachother for many reasons and they would argue and fight in the halls.

I’m very much into jegulus but I don’t think I’ve seen a fic that has written them as actually enemies to lovers in a canonical setting.

Jegulus to me is very push and pull. One step forward, two steps backwards.

I honestly think that sure, when they met at 11 and 12 when Sirius had his little brother trailing after him and introduced them to each other, they both had the moment of instant connection that they both immediately denied and dismissed and buried under hatred.

James and Regulus see each other as competition. Regulus sees James as the one that stole his brother. James sees Regulus as the brother that doesn’t deserve Sirius.

Because Sirius told James all about his little brother all through first year and James was exited to meet him for a long time until they met and instantly realised that Regulus is a two faced snake and doesn’t deserve Sirius.

Because Sirius told Regulus all about his best friend in every letter, in every stolen moment during the holidays. Regulus was exited to meet James for a long time until they met and instantly realised that James isn’t the golden ray of sunshine that Sirius claims him to be but a brother stealing asshole.

I honestly think that Jegulus is THE enemies to lovers.

I don’t think Jegulus even had a civil conversation until after Sirius ran away. And even this conversation started as an argument. I think that they only reason the argument stopped and they started genuinely talking to eachother is because Regulus’ mask broke and James saw the hidden emotions underneath that Regulus was trying to hide.

I think that James held onto prejudice for a long time. He saw all Slytherins as evil and then didn’t think about that for years until he sees Regulus crack and then James has to rethink everything he has ever thought.

That’s how I think Jegulus starts and I don’t think they ever really talk about what they are or what they are doing for a very long time, to the point (if we are talking in a canonical sense) that they break and fall apart. To the point where they end up on different sides of a war.

ANYWAY! (this is really long and if you've read this far, just know that you are my favourite person in the entire world and I adore you to the ends of the universe).

Regulus and Lily, though they share many characteristics and traits and fundamentally different people. Even in the context of the people they are shipped with, even in the context of their friendships.

I love them both so much and I think saying that Lily is being replaced by Regulus is incredibly wrong and also perhaps a little misogynistic.

They are both incredible characters, who should not be defined by their relationships.

Like I said before. In the context of war, both Lily and Regulus were the first. Regulus may have failed to complete his mission and Lily may have succeeded in killing Voldemort… but at the end of the day both of them did not do anything in the long run. Voldemort was still able to return, the horcruxes still need to be destroyed and Harry still had to finish what the people before him started, Harry still had to fight a war he had no part in starting.

Effie trinket and Lenore dove Baird similarities (and some differences)🩶💜

I’ve made a smilier post about Haymitch and Effie’s similarities and the whole ship war thing (which I hate so much - from both sides) inspired me to do something similar with Lenore dove (they are also very different, and it will have its place but we are driving on positivity here)✨

*** disclaimer - The fact that I ship hayffie more then haydove and I have my own issues with Lenore dove as a charter does not mean I cannot look at the bigger picture and appreciate her as a character and her importance to the plot***

Also there would not be any talks about race and shit cause it’s not about white vs black im not American leave me out of it, and I don’t mind at all that Lenore dove’s actress (she is so gorgeous btw) is from Uganda and also Effie’s real complaction was never mentioned in the books so… yeah.

Let’s get this party started! 🥰

1. their empathy - with Lenore dove it’s come through her words and her quick way of jumping into action when needed (like with woodbine’s mother) with Effie it shows in the way she saw Haymitch from the get go and stood by him as much as she possibly could after his victory - even when she didn’t have to keep an eye on him.

2. Their love of Colours - Lenore dove woven into her clothes colourful pieces of fabric (I saw some theories that it’s Lucy gray’s dress and im so here for it) and when you love colourful stuff you try to put it anywhere you can. And with Effie it’s pretty much obvious that her outfits are colourful as hell.

3. Their way with words - Lenore dove wrote ��dangerous words’ and songs that reflected how she felt about living in 12 and the way she wanted to live as her ancestors did and Effie was said to speak and a very articulate way and to write all the speeches for katniss and peeta during the victory tour.

4. The golden token - this is Haymitch double everything coming to play - the two of them gave him beautiful golden token that served a purpose- the flint striker purpose is to build a fire and the bangle served as a sign of Effie sort of picking the side of the victors and of union - both with the d12 TEAM and to alert katniss that Finnick is a ally.

5. Both were arrested by the Capitol - I think if we calculate the time Haymitch was in the Capitol (about a month since Haymitch think is august when he arrives back) plus the two weeks before Lenore dove died and if we assume Effie was rescued along with the victors (but was the one that Astrid Everdeen operated on during the time the victors arrive and that’s why we didn’t see her) the victors were in the capitol for six weeks as well - they also were imprisoned for the same amount of time. I just realised that and my heart is breaking. 💔

6. Also in context of giving Haymitch stuff (cause why not) - the flint striker was made by tam amber, Lenore dove’s adoptive uncle and the multiple suits Haymitch were belonged to Effie’s great uncle.

7. You can’t keep them down - the moment they decide to do something they do it and they do it fast- Effie with how quickly she jumped in with the clothing and Lenore dove with her rushing for woodbine’s mom or burning that flag under the stage.

8. Both are described by people in relation to light - Haymitch Called Lenore dove radiant and Effie was called brilliant by vitus and I feel like it’s both for their personality and their intelligence - Haymitch describe Lenore dove as one who finished her exams first and that she is explaining things not from a place of arrogance and that she is explaining “maybe too smart for him” (Haymitch you are smart sweetie don’t put yourself down) with Effie is a bit harder to tell because of the mask she was wearing but the fact that she has the time to be the head of the uni cohort chapter (I have a post about what that means) and literally invented party concepts (@effieotto has a really great post about the spring saturnillia) during academic studies - she has to be so smart to pull this off.

9. They both care for Haymitch very much - Lenore dove said it and Effie can’t say it so she acts on it (she didn’t have to - she could have been all drusilla about it, but she didn’t)

10. In a weird way, they were both they only constant to Haymitch’s life for 24 years - Lenore dove in his mind, soul and purpose, Effie is in the physical realm.

11. They are the only two people that we know Haymitch spoke on the phone with (so random but it’s weird it happened two times)

12. They were both entered to the plot through a family member- burdock who was her cousin of sort and Proserpina who is her little sister.

13. Their bravery - Lenore dove with the way she stood into actions in front of the peacekeepers and her not crying in front of the cameras and Effie with the way she literally stormed into the apartment where Haymitch was literally being shot by peacekeepers and making sure prosie and vitus wouldn’t sprint out.

The differences (cause they are different and it needs to be addressed without making one worst then the other)

1. Responsibility - Lenore dove in comparison to Effie and other characters in the hunger games universe doesn’t have anyone she feel responsible for or needing to take care of (not saying it’s necessarily a bad thing, but I do believe it’s unknowingly have an affect on the way she choose to act) Effie even before we meet her in sunrise is in the background watching for her sister (Haymitch mentioned that Proserpina was with her sister who fixed her hair) and in the og trilogy she had the job of taking care of katniss l peeta and Haymitch

2. Lenore dove is a lot more impulsive and acts before she thinks, Effie would never do such a thing out of fear (in thg and in cf she was agitated as hell half of the time)

3. Effie is a lot more social and tends to get along and know a lot of people, while Lenore dove does not afraid to have a fight and get angry about people and also she is a lot more reserved outside of her group

4. Also the fact that Effie got along with Maysslie while Lenore dove hated her 😂😂😂

5. Effie would rarely show how she truly feels in public concerning snow and the Capitol - I think it’s because she fears and understands the consequences. Lenore dove on the other hand acts on what she feels and what she think is unjust in that regard even in the risk to herself.

6. We got Lenore dove closer - both in Haymitch promise and with her sad sad end of her character , with Effie like everything about her it is all so vauge, so much so Effie and Haymitch last interaction in the og trilogy is in catching fire. Not only there is a lot we don’t know sunrise brought up even more questions regarding Effie and Haymitch.

tbh there's also something a loooot of ppl need to learn calling "setting realistic expectations." i personally wouldn't want eddie back without an on-screen conversation between him and CHRIS about what CHRIS wants, otherwise his entire plot in texas would feel kinda moot with a throwaway "yeah chris is fine with coming back to LA :)" since this plot was big enough for eddie to drop everything to go finally make things right with his son. i didn't expect for him to show up for the two-parter. meanwhile, everyone i saw who was momentarily disappointed bc no tommy was like "ah well, we know we're almost definitely getting him next episode bc of leaks" and went on to enjoy the episode as a whole

- first of all, part of my reasoning is that it would be funny as fuck

- HOWEVER: bokuto is kinda gullible, takes a lot of what he’s told at face value without questioning it. he’s honest and open about his emotions

- ushijima is VERY literal, also takes things at face value, and doesn’t generally understand other people if they aren’t being direct

- bokuto’s inability to keep anything to himself would actually be helpful for ushijima

- he’d never be confused about bokuto’s emotional state which (as we know) is not something he would pick up on unless he was told

- bokuto would also benefit from being around someone who was incapable of sparing his feelings (ego probably would take a hit at first, but i think as an adult he’d be more capable of handling it)

- also bokuto is insanely social so he wouldn’t stop trying until he and ushijima were friends

- bonus: he’d get to hang out with tendou which would be fun for him

tendou + tanaka

- they are both insane

- high energy, like messing with people, weird hair

- somewhat self-centered but still socially aware

- i think tanaka would find tendou entertaining and i think tendou would find tanaka funny

- also the potential for them fucking with people to an honestly diabolical degree? yeah, i’m sat for that

- i think they would both mess with ushijima, but i don’t think they’d ever actually be mean— and they’re smart enough to know some of their friends should be left alone (…iwaizumi….daichi….oikawa but only because oikawa would put an honestly neurotic effort into getting revenge—which could only be learned through experience)

nishinoya + kuroo

- i mean… i feel like this one is obvious

- obsessed with themselves, enjoy causing chaos

- kuroo is so much smarter than noya but noya is more unpredictable so…they could definitely be a dangerous combination

- smarter than the tendou + tanaka duo because, like, kuroo

- kuroo would probably take advantage of how willing noya is to do dumb shit and get noya to do his stupidest ideas (noya would not realize he was being strategically convinced, also he probably wouldn’t even care if he knew because he was having fun)

- also, absolutely would be each other’s wingmen. probably with asahi and kenma. can almost guarantee they would NOT be good at this and the other men would just find it confusing

akaashi + kenma

- said in my prev post about this, i think akaashi would be friends with kuroo because they took of kenma and bokuto in high school so have a shared (ish) experience

- he’d be friends with kenma for different but adjacent reasons

- they’re both somewhat quiet and reserved but capable of being sarcastic or harsh if the situation requires it

- dating bokuto and kuroo (IN MY WORLD THEY ARE. ITS REAL TO ME!!!)

- anyway, both dating people with VERY different levels of extroversion who like to spend time together

- can sympathize with the sensory overload that is being around bokuto and kuroo at the same time

- BokuAka & KuroKen double dates??? yeah bro. bokuto’s idea, kuroo talks kenma into them.

- they’d probably enjoy watching Bokuto and Kuroo entertain themselves when they all hung out even if it was overwhelming

- ^^^ both of them have a much shorter social battery so would be allies in the situation (if they don’t want to talk, they hide from everyone in silence— my mental image is them quietly doomscrolling in the same room, or kenma playing video games while akaashi reads a book or something— point being, i think they’d be able to be around each other comfortably without it feeling like actual social interaction)

Howdy, Heidi! You said that some fans picked up things that were done on accident… Were there more scenes like that? Also, were there scenes that you guys made on purpose but fans didn’t pick up / were aware of them? In shipping terms (hihi) and in general terms. Thanks!

I think in every type of media you will inevitably see versions of 'authorial' intent vs audience interpretation that overlap and differ from each other in many ways. (Authorial intent in quotes because in collaborative mediums like film and animation every single person on the pipeline who touches the work probably has a slightly different personal interpretation they're contributing to the final work, even under someone like a showrunner or a director).

Humans are smart and it's in our nature to look for connections and find explainations to questions, so most of the time if someone is putting something down, someone is going to pick it up, so to speak, and a lot of things ARE on purpose.

But this same phenomenon can also lead to us seeing connections in places that even the 'authors' might not have originally thought of while creating the work, and I think that can be pretty neat actually! I don't necessarily think reading alternate interpretations of works is wrong-- it can be very healthy to explore multiple reads of a narrative or a character/character dynamic. On Chaos Theory there were definitely times when we were like 'fans are probably gonna ship this even if it's not the text' haha. Sometimes fans latch onto headcanons you really have no control over. Sometimes things were animated slightly differently from how they were conceived (which is also a natural part of things).

But yes, sometimes I have seen a few other things that were interpreted in slightly different ways from how they were directed or written verbally, but I'm personally of the opinion that it's more fun to leave some things visual and open to a little interpretation rather than beating the words over the audience's head and having the characters constantly announcing 'I'm feeling this because of this!' And going 'this is the only way to interpret the show and the characters and if you don't you're wrong!'

It's usually not a huge deal. I think even as we were working sometimes I'd make connections to myself that weren't necessarily spelled out to us and go 'oh, this is a throughline for this character actually!'

Like for example- if I remember correctly, the original direction behind how Kenji reacted to Ben's apparent death was that it was supposed to the first time he'd ever seen someone he really KNEW seemingly die right front of him, and being unable to do anything about it deeply affected him. Ben is a very important turning point in his character development regardless of which way you read it.

And I think this is actually something that just continued to stack onto his character throughout both shows whenever any of his friends lives are seriously in danger. In Camp when he's still unable to do anything but comfort Sammy while she's poisoned, to deciding it's too dangerous not to trade Wu's laptop for Brooklynn, to eventually throwing himself between the spinosaurus his dad is about to kill Darius with and choosing his friends over his own father and being willing to die with/for them... and then in Chaos Theory it kind of reboots all over again with Brooklynn dying and then his dad dying right in front of him, and his complex of not wanting to be useless and trying to do whatever he can at the expense of even himself to keep the loved ones he has left safe is kicked into overdrive.

I think there are a lot of things like that where the intent is not always verbally spelled out, but the more important thing is that it's still (hopefully) making you feel something.

It was a relatively slow month from Patton's perspective.

Emile gave him a bitter nail polish and it was actually stopping him from biting his claws as much. He also received a treat from his new fawn friend whenever he reported that he stopped himself, but now with nail polish it seemed a little too easy to be earned.

Doc caught on pretty quickly and just started to stop by for tea and treats when he felt like it.

Virgil also joined on the tea parties from time to time. He didn't admit it, but he was a fan of brownie cookies. So him joining perfectly correlated with the presence of said sweets at the table.

Pat was more interested in a new thing going on between his brother and Roman. They seemed to get along better now.

They had a game. Virgil would pretend to steal more kitchen utensils and Roman would buy them out with something shiny. His secret nest was so full of goods that it soon will be pretty easy to find.

Also with both of the birds speaking human everyone could hear the sass and snark that the black avian was.

Well almost everyone…

Janus and Logan still hadn't come back. They were still on the mission.

Patton missed Logan. They had something that he couldn't quite put into words.

Logan was very smart. He knew how the stars were made and he knew how the rainbows formed. One time, before his departure, they talked about flight, and he knew everything as if he could fly himself. Patton sometimes forgot that he wasn't an avian.

Of course he used many words Patton couldn't understand. But just hearing him talk was interesting. The passion in his voice, the spark of child-like wonder in his eyes, the way he couldn't quite control his hands while excited to teach the older avian a new topic…

Patton missed talking to Logan.

Maybe that was the main reason why he became so nervous when Emile got a call from him.

« Hello?» Emile answered, and unfortunately avian could only hear one side of the conversation. « No, it's out of order at the moment… Yes. How far away are you?... Well I'm afraid we'll need more time than that. We can use the avian's bathroom. « I'm afraid we will have to finish early today. You're going to have a neighbor and we have to prepare a very cold bath for him,» Doc explained while calling someone else and going towards the bathroom. He checked the temperature of the water and set it to the negative. « Roman? Yes, hello. We need a lot of ice in avian's bathroom. We have a selkie arriving. Is Remus next to you?... I'll call him next then,» he said, coming out of the bathroom.

He gestured for the avians to follow him simultaneously calling the second twin. « Hello Remus. We need the pool enclosure set up to northern standards. Bring a lot of ice. We're setting up a temporary enclosure in the bathroom, so take as much time as you need,» he instructed.

Finally he faced the avians, « Help Roman with ice and I'll take care of other stuff.»

The hour flew by fast. Both avians hissed from the cold after carrying that much ice, their hands were not used to cold temperatures. And finally their curiosity was about to get satisfied.

Logan and Janus swiftly jumped out of the van and carried the new someone into the bathroom. It was a selkie, just as Emile mentioned. Instead of legs he had a seal's tail littered in spots and circular patterns, upper half of his body was covered in the same patterns. And the hoodie he was wearing looked like he made it out of his own skin.

Selkies as the old off breeds of mermaids were a rarity in the wild. Because of the difference between their tail and their upper body they were not entirely suitable for their own habitat. Their upper body, a part passes to them from the warm water mermaids, requiered clothes to stay warm witch were hard to make in the underwater polar environment. Most selkies left in the world were more used to the cold then their predecessors, but still experienced trouble with temperature regulation. Overheating or freezing the selkie was very easy, and the selkie in front of them was definitely suffering from a heat stroke.

Avians were curiously peeping from behind the door not daring to interrupt the professionals. Emile was busy coming up with recovery plans and needed medicine. Other team members fetched all needed materials and were constantly in and out of the room.

« So we have to fix his overheating problem first. Then we can talk about malnourishment. He's so skinny! We need fat on those bones yesterday,» Emile instructed, mostly towards his coworkers because the selkie didn't seem interested in the conversation whatsoever. From time to time Doc would have to stick his hand into the ice cold water to retrieve the guy who was slowly trying to sink all the way to the bottom, from which Emile's hands started to look rather red.

Soon the diagnostic and temporary enclosure were completed and the patient was allowed to sulk back to the bottom. Emile thanked Roman, Logan and Janus for their good work and send them to rest. As soon as Logan left the bathroom Patton hopped on his shoulder.

« Greetings, Patton. It's been a while,» the technician nodded.

« Hey-ah, Logie. I was worried you two got in some trouble,» Patton confessed with a hopeful look in his eyes.

« That we did,» Logan surprised him, « We actually had a lot of difficulties with this mission. We couldn't approach this situation like we did with your rescue, the event was too big so we risked being overpowered and caught without rescuing anyone. Our cover was almost blown on the first day, and we had to play the long game to build our 'reputation' and image. Then we had trouble actually buying the selkie. I already told you how we don't give money to those people, so every time we're undercover we need to pretend to buy the creature but instead we steal them at the most convenient moment. But because we needed the water for the selkie, and we didn't know we would be rescuing a water creature so we didn't think to take an aquarium with us, which was very stupid of us,» he admitted. «We couldn't just grab him and run. And getting an aquarium on the spot without raising suspicion of not being as rich as we were pretending to be was quite a challenge,» Logan ranted.

« And after all this trouble we almost lost him, because they don't let people in the room with their purchase without paying first!» he exclaimed swinging his hands to the side, making the avian jump and reajuste himself on the shoulder.

« Wow. That must have been really stressful. How did you get out of this one?» the bird wondered.

The technician gestured for him to lean closer, « You didn't hear this from me, but Janus knows how to make fake checks.»

« Those super detailed paper things?» Pat specified. Getting a nod from Logan he let out an impressed whistle. « He's so talented!»

While the older avian was having a long awaited conversation with his friend Emile was busy warming up with a cup of tea and freshening up his oceanic vocabulary. Out of all of the languages he knew this one was his weakest by far. Northern dialect was hard to learn with the lack of native speakers willing to go on contact with a stranger. He had a few sources that taught this language, but without speaking with a native Emile's pronunciation was pretty atrocious.

After recovering from a frost bite he decided to visit the patient again. He brought frozen fish with him. It would solve both a problem with overheating and malnourishment.

A selkie seemed to be back to the surface. But instead of cautiously taking in the new environment he looked more like he owned the place.

« Please eat this fish,» Emile pleaded in his broken oceanic.

The creature looked at him skepticaly, then at the fish, and then begrudgingly held up his hand to receive the plate and started eating.

« You pronounce it wrong. You say fish with 'ur' not 'ra' sound,» selkie scolded him.

« I'm sorry. I don't have a person to teach me,» fawn admitted.

« That sentence is just completely inside out,» selkie huffed and then proceeded saying the sentence correctly. He then started making demands only a couple of which Emile could actually understand. More food and it shouldn't be fish.

« Is the temperature ok?» doctor asked instead. Making sure the climate was right was most important now.

« It's fine,» the selkie begrudgingly admitted. « You're cute, so I can forgive the lack in service.»

This patient might be his greatest challenge yet, Emile could feel it.

My two favourite things in the world are both books that have all the elements that I enjoy, and I mean this in the sense of both the ID-gratifying elements like whump and fucked up intriguing character dynamics, and broader and more poignant topics about society and humanity and how it all functions and also some fucking beautiful writing.

Thing A has a massive fandom, whereas thing B has a fandom of like 20 people. This is due to several factors: A got an adaptation and lots of promo, and is also in a genre that doesn't seem intimidating and that fandoms tend to like interacting with, whereas B begins in a way that feels too highbrow/complicated so loads of people bounce off of it even though in the end it has more or less the same mix of ID-gratifying elements and poignant commentary on human nature.

I need to be clear that it's the combo of the two (+the sheer quality of the writing and plotting) that makes those books my two favourite things ever. There's just something very comforting about a work of art that effortlessly gets the things that you perceive about the world at large and find important but ALSO includes all your favourite kinks and trashy romance dynamics.

Now, you'd expect the fandom A to water down the source material and reduce it to incorrect quotes but there's actually a large and quite popular contingent of people engaging with the more philosophical/moral/sociological themes of the work, with excellent quality meta that gets as much traction as the cutesy ship fanart and people going apeshit over the whump and the meowmeowness of the morally questionable characters. There's arguments and fandom drama as well but I cannot describe how much I fucking love it there simply because the average fan understands the source material fairly well and is ready to engage with all of its elements, hot romance and whump and reflections on human nature and all.

OTOH fandom B tends to attract snooty intellectual types - and you can immediately tell from the profiles that they're snooty intellectual types. Lots of people calling themselves "bluestockings" and having the most stodgy upper middle class academia person attitudes imaginable. Which makes sense because you need to have a certain level of... confidence in your ability to comprehend complex things in order to not give up on the canon material halfway through? There's a very prevalent attitude of thinking they're cooler than other people because they're into this super deep and complicated thing.

The funny thing is that they seem to absolutely refuse to engage with the actual themes of the work and insist on mangling them and misunderstanding the characters to gush over the whump and the toxicity of it all. This, combined with the small size of the fandom, and the snooty intellectual attitude (sensitivity to opposing opinions because they've built their entire personalities on being Very Smart and Always Correct included!), and the frequent incapacity to comprehend that sometimes the grey morality and ambivalence is ON PURPOSE, makes me very reluctant to engage with the fandom at all even though the brainrot about the canon material is by this point an integral part of my soul.

I go into the tag almost every day - it gets a couple of posts per week from the same 15ish people and almost all of the ones that aren't jokes that fall flat misunderstand the canon while being obnoxious and snooty and gatekeepy as fuck.

Whereas in fandom A nobody's really putting on airs - they're all like "yeah we like this popular thing, isn't it cool! let's talk about the cool thing!" I don't know what my point was with all of this, beyond the fact that, man, I WISH fandom B were more like fandom A and it makes me sad that it's not.

I just want more cool people that I can discuss shit I like with, yeah?

(funnily enough I'm pretty sure that like 50% of fandom B are also at least casual fans of A, or at least A's mid adaptation, they just don't often have a lot to say about it.)

Of course they did. Percy was almost slipping anyway. Instead of Annabeth trying to fall by herself, she accepts Percy to fall with her. I know the poor girl must have been scared.....but it was still selfish anyway. I also would like to remind people that Percy would have done the same thing for his mother or Grover or another character very important to him. In the world, there isn't only Annabeth Chase.

Really? So why was she stalking Percy like a creepy? Even hides herself while still stalking the boy and letting him get bullied. Why was she going after him? Yeah....she probably wanted to get close to the new demigod because he would be her chance to go on a mission. For me, not even Clarisse would dare go this low for someone....she seems the type to be honest to her true self.....and she did it....by hating the guy every girl liked....even Annabeth, who was possessive and controlling of Percy even when they weren't dating. Yeah....hard to get.

Really? Because the one that always appear facing and fighting Percy is Clarisse because the boy is not afraid to disagree with Clarisse. Both may be very different from each other, but they are honest to their true selves, they are loyal to the people they love or care about and they usually don't run from a fight that easy even when they are scared. They also don't have a cap that would let them hide themselves whenever they wanted...like cowards.

Annabeth is the one that faces Percy because she is arrogant and thinks everything needs to go according to her point of view, which is not true, and Percy being the loyal puppy he is....he is afraid to disagree with her, the daughter of the goddess of wisdom since he is an insecure boy and the nickname "Seaweed Brain" doesn't help at all.

These two go through some shockingly similar things in their respective plots, which let to someone making a tumblr account solely dedicated to polling which one was people's favourites for SEVENTY POLLS. it is @the-timeloop-tournament and it is immaculate. mr arimnaes never won even a single time. this has resulted in a large amount of people from both fandoms shipping these otherwise unrelated characters and making art of them and stuff and i think its such a sweet story that a community has fostered around them from this. also they're both great characters separately <3
