not to bring tiktok drama on tumblr but like every time a ‘scandal’ comes out with one of these ‘production companies’ that make fan films i always hope we’re finally gonna discuss how they professionalize something that should be an hobbyist endeavor… and yet every single time i’m disappointed.
#like I know we’ve been talking about it here on tumblr and i remember seeing like one or two videos on tt about it#but other than that creators really don’t seem to be engaging critically with the impact that the very nature of what they’re doing has#and look i truly do love the art that some of the people involved in the project make#like arone is truly one of the most talented cosplayers i know#ethan is an amazing actor and I’ve followed him since before he was even in the marauders#dorian is a great writer and idk the others as well but I’m sure they are all great artists#((naming the just cause i feel like being vague would be worse in this case))#and i do believe they engaged with the project with the best of intentions#without knowing or trying to afford grace on past controversy#and it truly is a horrible predicament to have your work be tainted like that for something you had no control over#but like i do think we should be questioning the very idea of how this fanfilms have been made is inherently a problem#like fanfilms are essentially fanfiction on camera#so as long as a few cosplayers want to get together with their iphones write a script and shoot at the local park I don’t have a problem#but if you are putting in place a product that somehow requires you to fundraise consistently for two years then I have a problem with it#ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE SELLING THE SCRIPT TO DO SO#cause even if that script hadn’t been ai generated#that script is fanfiction and you do. not. sell. fanfiction.#seriously like… do we need to go over our abc again?#like fanart and cosplayers are a bit different in the sense that people sell fanart/do commissions and they can be professional cosplayers#but for any other fanmade project that requires you to put pen to paper (or keyboard to chatgpt ig)#you need to be engaging with several ethical questions regarding any exchange of money#and personally i don’t think that there’s been engagement with those ethical reflections#and this isn’t about any of the people involved and not even about mischief productions specifically#it’s about a wider issue in how we have been collectively normalizing a way of doing things that should not be normal#and like yes star using ai and being overall not good is bad but like can we talk about EVERYTHING ELSE please

I asked Chat gbt to make me a mr beast script(cuz I wanna to see what they would come up with)and this is what they made me:
Title: The Ultimate Invisible Pizza Challenge
[INTRO]
MrBeast: "What’s up, guys! Today we’re doing the craziest challenge ever! We have 10 contestants, 50 invisible pizzas, and a goat named Gary! Whoever can find the most invisible pizzas in one hour wins… a lifetime supply of marshmallows!"
[SCENE 1: THE SETUP]
MrBeast: "Behind me is a giant inflatable unicorn, and hidden somewhere inside it are our invisible pizzas. Contestants, you have to wear these blindfolds and balance on one foot while reciting the alphabet backward. Go!"
[SCENE 2: GARY THE GOAT]
MrBeast: "While they search, let’s meet Gary! He’s trained to play chess but today he’s judging the pizza contest! Gary, what do you think of the invisible pizza situation?"
[GARY the goat bleats loudly, as if answering.]
[CONTESTANTS struggle, hilariously wobbling and mumbling the alphabet.]
[SCENE 3: PIZZA SCAVENGING]
MrBeast: "Contestants, time's ticking! Remember, you have to make a pizza-scented candle before you can claim your invisible pizzas! Go!"
[They scramble to make candles out of spaghetti and jellybeans.]
[SCENE 4: THE FINALE]
MrBeast: "Only 10 seconds left! Whoever can convince Gary to pick them as the winner gets all the invisible pizzas!"
[CONTESTANTS try to talk to GARY, who is busy nibbling on a rubber duck.]
[CLOSING]
MrBeast: "Time's up! Gary, who’s the winner?"
[GARY looks at the rubber duck.]
MrBeast: "Looks like the duck wins! Congratulations, you get a year’s supply of invisible pizzas and a rubber duck! See you next time!"
[FADE OUT with random dance music and GARY playing chess.]
(I can't believe people still think that AI will take over the world, bruh._.)
(I'll probably make this into YouTube poop or a tumbler meme in the future, but have this for now)
(also if anyone actually wants to use this script at least tell me and credit me because I'd like to see how it turns out, byeeeee)

the thing for me is,,, this is a very vulnerable fandom space. a very young fandom space for a start, and a very diverse one - a lot of people within this space come here as a recluse from jkr's bigotry, to still experience the joy they once found in her works without truly engaging with her. and yes, we could do better in that aspect, a hell of a lot better, but this space still acts as a recluse.
to use a facist machine (ai) within a fanfilm is despicable. to steal works from authors within this space (or any space) to produce a fanfilm script is despicable. to then post it anyway, and quote "acting portfolios" as a reason to do so? disgusting.
ai is ruining creative industries. i mean, fuck, we just watched ao3 get scraped in the THOUSANDSSSS for works to be fed to an ai database. there's an ai tag on ao3. there was a whole trend on tiktok for weeks of people putting fanart into chatgpt and asking for a caption for it. there's ai generated videos using cosplayers literal faces. fics put onto that fucking app that got deleted that turned anything into an audiobook. fics on goodreads and etsy and amazon. fanart sold by people on etsy, fanart posted without credits and-
i could go on and on.
there is so much blatant disrespect towards creations within this space, and AI is reaching into every corner of it and to post a fanfilm that used AI for a script and quote love and effort? the amount of love and effort into it?
truly, despicable. because who is harmed more by ai? when these industries go, when ai, which is fed through a very western-centric and fascist perspective controls everything? who's harmed the most?
because it won't be people like jkr. it will be the people seeking recluse from those like her.
you're either in fandom because you love creating and you love community, or you're in fandom to get something out of it. and to post something that stole from fic writers for your own acting portfolios and publicity? yeah. it's obvious what side you're on.
fuck generative ai in fandom spaces and fuck anyone willing to prey on this community for their own progression - this is a community for those that need it the most, not another step on a ladder for you to climb.
#i could go on and on#about every bad thing mischief productions and certain members within it have done#but most of all i am enraged at the normalisation of ai#i could go on#so so much#so im ending the tags here before i rant about it all#just#AHHHH

Your teammate says he finished writing your college presentation. He sends you an AI generated text. The girls next to you at the library are talking about the deepfake pictures of that one celebrity at the MET gala. Your colleague invites you to a revision session, and tells you about how he feeds his notes to ChatGPT to get a resume. You say that's bad. He says that's your opinion. The models on social media aren't even real people anymore. You have to make sure the illustrated cards you buy online were made by actual artists. Your favourite musician published an AI starter pack. Your classmates sigh and give you a condescending smile when you say generative AI ruins everything. People in the comments of your favourite games are talking about how someone needs to make a Character.AI chat for the characters. People in your degree ask the answers of your exams to ChatGPT. You start to read a story and realise nothing makes sense, it wasn't written by a human being. There's a "this was written with AI" tag on AO3. The authors of your favourite fanfics have to lock their writing away to avoid their words getting stolen. Someone tells you about this amazing book. They haven't actually read it, but they asked Aria to resume it for them, so it's almost the same thing. People reading your one shot were mad that you wouldn't write a part 2 and copied your text in ChatGPT to get a second chapter. Someone on Tumblr makes a post about how much easier it is to ask AI to write an email for them because they're apparently "too autistic" to use their own words. Gemini generates wrong and dangerous answers at the top of your Google research page. They're doubling animation movies using voices stolen by AI. It's like there's nothing organic in this world anymore. Sometimes you think maybe nothing is real. The love confession you received yesterday wasn't actually written by your crush. If you're alone on a Saturday night and you feel lonely, you can talk to this AI chatbot. It terrifies you how easily people are willing to lay their critical thinking on the ground and slip into a state of ignorance. Creativity is too much work, having ideas by yourself became overrated these days. When illustrators fear for their future, people roll their eyes and tell them it's not that bad, they're just overreacting. No one wants to hear this ecologist crap about the tons of water consumed by ChatGPT, it's not that important anyway. There's AI sprinkled in the soundtrack of that movie and in the special effects and into the script. Giving a prompt to Grok is basically the same thing as drawing this Renaissance painting yourself. McDonald's is making ads in Ghibli style. The meaning of the words and images all around you slip away as they're replaced with robotic equivalents. No one is thinking anymore, they're just doing and saying what they were told. One day, there might not be any human connection anymore. Without the beauty of art, we have nothing to communicate, nothing to leave to the world, and our lives become dull. Why would you befriend anyone when you can get a few praises and likes on Instagram by telling a bot to copy Van Gogh's style on a picture of your cat? It's okay, you're never really alone when you can call your comfort character on c.AI anytime. You don't even know how to solve basic everyday problems, ChatGPT does it for you. One day it'll tell you to jump on the rails at the subway station, and maybe you'll do. You sacrificed your job, your friends, your partner, your family, and your planet. After all this, it has to be worth it. If Gemini tells you to drink bleach tonight when you search a receipt for dinner, then surely, it must be right.

Before you use ChatGPT to write that thing, please know that one of the YouTubers I research/write for just sent me a script he got from someone else that was very obviously generated by a large language model, and we roasted it for about an hour. There was a lot of "why does it keep talking about a bag of leaves like it's a novel concept" and "I think that paragraph gave me a stroke" and lots of "I sincerely hope you didn't pay actual money for this."
We can tell. We can tell you didn't use your brain, and it pisses us off. The mistakes you make aren't nearly as stupid as the ones the machine makes, and they are MUCH easier to fix. When you turn in genAI glop, you're asking the recipient to either put in a shit-ton of work making sense of it or just write you off entirely.
Just write your own shit! Make it terrible! It literally CANNOT be worse than the slop spewed out by the planet-burning plagiarism engine! And definitely don't expect to be paid or get credit for turning in what amounts to lorem ipsum!
That "writer" got fired, btw. Not least because neither the YouTuber nor I wanted to spend all that time using our brains to fix what he shat out without using his.

remember a few years back, right before chatgpt dropped more or less, there was a popular trend to go "i forced a bot to watch 200 hours of the office and then asked it to generate an episode" and post a script written in the style of "MICHAEL, while eating a birthday: everyone, you are late for bird school, which is for birds" and people thought it was the funniest shit? and now that the bot is real everyone hates it

I've been waiting for a Rick and Space Beth episode for a long time. Rick's dynamic with Beth has been underplayed in the past few seasons, and despite their narrative potential, he and Space Beth rarely interact.
Until Valkyrick, anyway. I was a little worried that this episode would have a B-plot that would take us away from the Rick and Space Beth action, but nope--the writers gave us 20 minutes of pure father/space daughter bonding time.
This episode was a little too action-packed to explore their issues in depth, but it touched on various elements of their dynamic--resentment, frustration, attachment, camaraderie--and showed that they're not that different in the end, which Space Beth isn't too happy about. Rick, of course, relishes it.
Including Bird Person and Bird Daughter was a masterstroke, too. Bird Person's the only friend who can relate to Rick's challenges as the girl dad of a violent assassin, and I loved seeing them bond after their rift in season five. Plus, Bird Daughter is endlessly entertaining. She's loud, feisty and ready to tear insects limb from limb, just like her human counterpart.

Characterization definitely carried this episode, because the plot itself wasn't the greatest. The supersoldier concept has been done a million times (Space Beth jokes about this, but the episode takes that route anyway), and the doctor was a generic raving madman.
"Ultromflomites, attack! Behold, the Gromflomites of the future! Soon we will reign again!" I mean...really? Rick and Morty's creativity is part of the reason it captured the zeitgeist in 2015-2017, and with only ten episodes per season, I feel like the writers could've come up with something better than ChatGPT-level dialogue.
The ending was super abrupt, too. When the end credits music started playing, I thought "...wait, it's over?" This episode could've used a scene of Rick and Space Beth returning home to wrap everything up.
Also, this isn't necessarily a criticism, but season six onwards tends to feel less like a comedy and more like a drama with some light humor. Dan Harmon was smart to step back and hire new writers, especially now that the show has been renewed up to season twelve, but I do think the show lost most of its crackling wit.
On a positive note, the Cisco plot was a clever twist on the "I know a guy" trope. I wish we could've actually seen Rick and Space Beth hanging out and eating together.
Hearing Stephen Root's voice was also a pleasant surprise. I grew up watching King of the Hill, and with the Hulu revival only a few months away, Bill Dauterive was a fun addition to Rick and Morty. The script gave him the best lines, especially "No, my pen rolled into the corner."

Getting back to the characters: Rick finally going into Dad Mode for Space Beth was great. It's clear that he cares from the beginning--immediately agreeing to pick her up ("Of course, just like that. You're my daughter, probably"), trying to get her employer to see her value, joining her on her mission so that she doesn't get in trouble.
But Space Beth's infection gets both of them to drop the mask. He calls her "sweetie," and she desperately cries "Dad?" when he enters the tank to infect himself. And a few seconds later: "Oh shit! Sorry, Beth! Daddy's coming!" Not long after, Rick admits to Bird Person that he's trying to be a decent father.
And Rick shows pride in Bird Daughter, too. It's probably safe to assume that he sees his own little girl in her.
Then the finale that we all saw coming: Rick crying Beth's name and brutalizing the Gromflomite who assaults her. Space Beth probably tells herself that she has some grudging respect for Rick now, but I think it's more than that. She knows that Rick sees her as his daughter, not a nuisance that he sent into space to get out of trouble.
Plus, the show tends to portray her as a snarky badass, so I enjoyed seeing her goofy and vulnerable side. We see her crack jokes, complain about slang, deal with workplace drama and groan loudly at the agony of having to call her father for help. She's Beth Sanchez through and through, and after four seasons, she's finally getting the attention she deserves.

Because I think everyone should know this today:
✨ How To Spot Generative AI Slop: Save Your Media Literacy! ✨
For AI images:
- Zoom in as close as you possibly can to background details. AI can make decently cohesive foregrounds but struggles with complex backgrounds.
- Keep an eye on patterns. Are they wobbly, inconsistent, fading out in weird places, or fusing into other parts of the image? That’s probably AI.
- AI tends to “stylize” images in weird ways that are meant to mimic staging or strong lighting, but it usually ends up giving it a weird reflective, airbrushed, or “plasticky” shine. Even if there are multiple textures in one image, they’ll usually end up looking nearly identical.
- Watch for “objects” in the image that look like nothing at all (blobs, deformed items, and general objects that you can’t even tell what they’re supposed to be) or “artifacting” in otherwise polished images.
- Symmetry is usually nonexistent, especially in architectural images.
- Text and numbers will usually be misspelled, inconsistent, or out of order.
- Mechanical images are usually a dead giveaway if you look close; none of the components or mechanisms will even appear to be functional or make sense in terms of construction.
For AI videos:
- As with AI images, check the backgrounds and you’ll see some absurdly nonsensical stuff.
- AI can’t generate convincing longform video, so keep an eye out for videos that “compile” or abruptly cut and splice different clips every 10 seconds or so.
- The movement in AI videos is not convincing at all, especially with human movement. Figures will all move at roughly the same pace, in partial slow-mo, or with a “floaty” or gliding quality to them.
- Keep an eye out for general logical errors; crowds of people tend to blend into each other or move strangely, cars will drive the wrong way on roads, etc.
- Faces won’t emote accurately (or at all), especially in eye and mouth movement. Emoting will make the entire face warp strangely. If a video relies a lot on facial movement, the figure and background will often be completely static.
For AI text/ChatGPT:
- Watch for unnecessarily long blocks of text where a short sentence or two would be preferred.
- ChatGPT relies heavily on descriptors and adjectives that fill out the writing but add nothing at all to the content. Be mindful of long descriptions and “explanations” that actually say nothing at all.
- AI can’t distinguish its “voice” or tone, so a lot of ChatGPT writing is unnecessarily verbose or formal. Even if the AI is initially trying to generate a casual voice, it can abruptly change into formal language.
- Keep an eye out for repetition of words, phrases, or concepts in general. AI can’t tell when it’s repeating itself, especially in longer passages, and you’ll typically notice one specific phrase or descriptor constantly being used.
- If attempting to write in an informational or “how-to” tone, ChatGPT won’t actually include any details or elaboration; any information it does give out will be overly general or vague.
- When AI generated information is fake, it’s usually egregiously fake. If you find a factual error that no person would have made, especially in a format that would have required an editor to put out, it’s likely ChatGPT generated.
For AI voices:
- The typical tone of voice will usually be flat and lack any emotion, even when trying to imitate it. AI voices tend to speak as if they’re reading off an essay, which is especially noticeable if they try to read a colloquial script.
- Listen for distortions or inconsistencies in the voice. Some AI voices constantly have an unnatural or synthesized tone or will slur when trying to read an unfamiliar word, repeating characters, or different languages.
- AI voices will sometimes pronounce the same word completely differently if read in the same sentence or audio clip.
- AI doesn’t know how to properly read sentence structures, so AI voices will sometimes read off scripts in stilted or grammatically incorrect ways. Pay attention to random pauses, bad pacing, or weird inflections on words.

what do you think of the people using the wonka AI generated experience as proof that AI is making everything worse and taking the soul out of art
deeply silly. like do these people thikn if it wasnt for chatgpt the people beihnd Willy's Chocolate Experience would have been making a carefully crafted beautiful interactive art piece? no they would have downloaded 'chocolate wonderland.jpg' stock photos and written an equally bad and nonsensical script themselves. it was obviously a hack cash grab from the beginning. if anything AI provided the only redeeming parts of it with the batshit nonsense text on the posters and the evil chocolatier who lives in the walls and the hilarious fact that the script includes audi8ence reactions
