Gaius: saves money but has no idea where it is because it's hidden in random jars and books

Merlin: is fairly good with money but never lets anyone know exactly how good and evades all questions pertaining to his finances

Gwen: saves everything and picks pennies off the floor of the grocery store

Uther: is going to be buried with his money in his coffin when he dies

Morgana: is currently embezzling from five different companies

Mordred: money keeps disappearing around him...

Arthur: would be completely broke without Merlin

Gwaine: is completely broke

Put "📓" or some other version of a book emoji into my inbox and I'll explain the plot of a fanfiction that I haven't written but daydream about.

Hm. I have actually several fic ideas for Merlin, though I think I'll go with a Freylin fic which I'll call "The Warlock and the Lady of the Lake" or something. Since you don't know much about Merlin, I'll give you some background information under the cut.

In this fanfiction, Freya does not die. Instead, Merlin manages to heal her--he wasn't sure whether he'd succeed but the magic of the lake helps him. He succeeds in making an amulet which suppresses the curse and promises to try and find a permanent solution. Worried she will still be persecuted, he sends her to Ealdor to live with his mother. He accompanies her to Camelot's border, and as a promise to not forget each other, they spontaneously get married in a village on their way. They bought cheap rings on the market, Freya wears it on her ring finger and Merlin on a necklace hidden under his shirt so no one would ask questions. Freya arrives in Ealdor with a letter stating she's a friend of Merlin's who needs a place to stay--Merlin doesn't mention she's his wife though, he wants to tell her himself.

A lot of time passes during which Merlin and Freya frequently exchange letters, and he always sends her little presents--things in the market that make him think of her, birthday and anniversary presents as well as small boxes of magically preserved strawberries whenever they first come into season. Merlin visits sometimes when he has a few days off and tells his mother on the first of the visits that they're married and she tells him off for not having told her earlier and for letting her travel here alone.

Then, at the end of the 4th series, Gwen starts living with Merlin's mother and while Freya is pretty shy, she and Gwen become friends. They bond over knowing Merlin, though Freya doesn't tell her they're married because she knows Merlin wants to tell his friends when he takes her to live in Camelot--he's just waiting for the right moment. But more on that later.

At the season finale, Merlin and Arthur and the two smugglers arrive in Ealdor and it becomes apparent immediately that Merlin and Freya are very close, though they do not have the time to talk about it much. They have to leave then, and when they're in the forest later, Freya and Gwen sit by the campfire and Gwen asks whether the husband she mentioned is Merlin. Then most of the following things happen like in the show except Freya follows Merlin into battle (which he's not happy about since to his knowledge, she doesn't know how to fight). Anyway, after the battle is over, Freya stays in Camelot for now, though they don't really talk about what's going to happen with them now. Arthur, noticing how happy being with Freya makes Merlin, offers her a position as a servant which Merlin is happy about since it means she'll be able to stay--Freya on the other hand is not as thrilled because Camelot reminds her of when she was captured. Freya and Merlin argue which leads to Freya leaving the castle after saying she knows Merlin would never want to leave Camelot but she can't stay so she has to leave. Merlin is heartbroken and wanders around that night and ends up in front of the tavern where he found her in a cage. He ends up drinking there and pours his heart out to Gwaine who finds him there.

The next day, Arthur wants to give Merlin a day off because he seems so down but Merlin insists on working because then he doesn't have to think about his fight with Freya. They end up going out into the forest because nature always cheers Merlin up. They find some wild strawberries and then Merlin tells him about how Freya wanted strawberries but he ended up giving her a rose, about how they met (not very detailed though) and other things, mostly just snippets of conversations Merlin throws in when he thinks of them, he's mostly quiet though. Merlin unconsciously lead them to the Lake of Avalon where they find Freya, and Merlin wants to leave quickly but Freya holds him back and then they have some ✨healthy communication✨ and make up, trying to find a compromise. Now here's the main points of conflict they talk about:

Freya has a trauma from being captured and almost killed in Camelot which makes it hard for her to be in the city

They both haven't seen each other often and only for a week at a time so they're kinda afraid the image they made of each other in their heads is unrealistic and so much better and different from what they're actually like

Merlin considered bringing Freya to Camelot after the 3rd season finale because he thought Uther wasn't in a state to recognise her as a druid and have her executed no matter what and drafted a thousand letters but never sent any of them because of the aforementioned reason, also he was kinda afraid of telling the others he's married and just kept it from them forever and everything would change then which he was scared of

Merlin admits to not having thought about Freya's feeling when it comes to her staying in Camelot and he's sorry about being so self-centered and she forgives him because she didn't exactly tell him how being in Camelot makes her feel

After Arthur and Gwen's marriage, they tell Merlin and Freya to go on a honeymoon and enjoy it for them because as king and queen, they have too many duties to leave. Gwen ends up employing Freya as her maid, and since Freya and Merlin tell her about how Freya has some traumatic experiences in Camelot, she allows her to leave when it gets too much.

These are the basic ideas I have, at least those that are mostly fleshed-out yet. There will also be a magic reveal somewhere at the end though I don't really know yet when and how. God, this is longer than I thought it would be, oops. Either way, I really love this story and wanna write it down some day when I crawled out of the pit that is executive dysfunction.

Freya is a druid girl who is cursed to turn into a Bastet (a human-killing monster) every night at midnight. A slaver caught her and wants to turn her over to King Uther who pays handsomely for captured sorcerers. Before he's able to go through with this plan, Merlin finds her and frees her, hiding her in tunnels underneath the city. For a few days, he brings her food and they fall in love, I think a reason for that might be that he doesn't have to hide his magic from her. During the nights, Freya transforms into a Bastet and kills people which Merlin does not know about. Eventually, they make plans to elope but Freya, knowing nothing good can come of it because of her curse, runs away while he packs his things. She hides and plans to sneak out during the night but encounters a patrol, and it turns midnight before she can convince them to let her go. In the following fight, she is gravely wounded by Arthur, and Merlin finds her. Despite still being a Bastet then, she doesn't attack him. After she transforms back, Merlin brings her to the Lake of Avalon, a place reminiscent of her childhood home and similar to where they wanted to run off to.

Freya: "Where will we go?"

Merlin: "Somewhere with mountains."

Freya: "A few fields."

Merlin: "Wild flowers."

Freya: "A couple of cows."

Merlin: "And a lake."

Freya: "And a lake."

The strawberry thing is a reference to when Merlin asked her what she wanted to eat and he tried to conjure some strawberries but ended up conjuring a red rose instead.

why you ask? well i have multiple reasons

1. look at him in season one

he has the posture and awkwardness of a pre pubescent boy (furthermore, gwen and merlin look like his two nerdy best friends hyping him up to ask the popular girl (well in this case, guy) out, so)

2. in arthurian legend, his name’s lancelot du lac, literally meaning lancelot of the lake. yknow who’s the lady of the lake? freya. and freya looks like she’s 25 at most so?? (this also makes the pic up there look like two doting parents hyping up their son which,, now i cant really unsee, and i dont know how to feel about that)

3. in seasons after and hes got a haircut, hes clearly going through an emo phase.

this is a man who listen to my chemical romance unironically. watch him yell “its not a phase, mom!” from his pitch black bedroom in avalon (and watch freya sigh tiredly as she does whatever lake goddesses do)

4. saw someone say this once so, “i heard a rumour that this place was haunted? apparently some girl died here when she was nine or something” “i’m eleven so shut the fuck up”

Freya. She's not exactly one-off but I so so desperately wish she played a bigger part.

Because, c'mon. SHE'S THE DAMN LADY OF THE LAKE.

Magic beautiful water cat woman who guards the gates to death.

She deserves more than just being a mysterious hand who held and caught a sword. And Merlin deserved to have a secret water wife (i also love Freylin <33). Just think of the many possibilities and plots that could have happened. Just- just imagine. This is why i'm depressed.

I told this to @tireddruid in conversation once and put it in one of my fics too, but I believe that after the Lamia incident, Gwaine woke up in the middle of the night after being recovered from what the Lamia did to him and then realized what he had done to Merlin. So he immediately went to Merlin's hut in the village they were staying in and just. starting crying. Silently and hard, beside Merlin's bed, full of remorse because damn it Gwaine's whole concept was that nobility came from the heart, not by blood. And what he did under the Lamia's spell wasn't noble at all.

Besides that, Merlin was his friend. The first person who took him to his home - gave up his own bed - to look after him while he was heavily drunk and barely capable of standing without support and didn't resent or rob him after that. Merlin was kind, caring, loyal and never - never - deserving of that kind of treatment or close to it. He was his first friend. He was why he became a knight. He was why Gwaine risked his neck to protect a noble and a royal. He was why Gwaine enteres the lands of hell. He was why Gwaine jumped into a battle against an undead army. Simply because Merlin asked. Simply because Merlin cared for him without cost when no one else did and wanted him to stay.

Who would want to lose a treasure of a friend like that?

Merlin then woke up 30 minutes later to find the crying mess of a knight and immediately knew that whatever doubts he had been having about the knights since the Lamia was untrue and Gwaine (and later the others too) would never willingly hold him in that regard. They fortunately didn't harm him too much, and it would take a while for Merlin to not flinch every time any of the knights made sudden movements towards him, but he would recover. And he would remember, just why he decided to befriend them.

Agh. I thought about this one. And I don't particularly think much about characters beyond the main ones unless they relate to a plot of mine.

But one thing I assumed (but the show never confirmed) is that Merlin is quite popular among the servants.

I mean, does anyone remember Tyr Stewart? The guy evil!Gwen killed? He was outright threatened with death and his mother too, the poor man was traumatized and scared and anxious. Yet, he opened up to Merlin after some coaxing.

I don't think just anyone would open up to a random stranger, even in a higher power with the potential to end your life (cuz Merlin is tge manservant to the king), and trust them with information regarding yours and your loved one's lives. But he did with Merlin.

And this just proves to me that Merlin is in fact quite popular and friendly with the servants and patients and other commoners. The cook hates him, hey, but none of the other servants snitched on him when he snagged a pastry or dumpling or two. Especially not after Merlin sneaked them a piece ;)
