Master Twii tended to keep their dojos in the Edge Territories. It was where they were needed most. It was where one could easily find cogniscents 'proving' their strength by beating up smaller and weaker ones.

To Master Twii, it only proved that they wasted their strength on bullying. To Master Twii, people like that needed some kharmic realignment.

Of course, it couldn't be the master that taught bullies a short, sharp lesson in manners. It had to be their former victims. So they started teaching. Simple lessons. How to fall without being hurt. How to regain solid footing. How to stand to reduce being toppled.

I love how this is the only entry on the wiki page for the Rite of Tal'oth. Both T'Pol and Spock talk about their Kahs-Wan and it seems to be an extremely common thing for Vulcan children to go through but ONLY Tuvok so far has mentioned this Tal'oth rite so it doesn't seem to be as expected of Vulcans. This jives with my impression of Tuvok's character being the most spiritual of the three main Vulcans (from what I understand the spirituality of Vulcan that we see in 'later' series is seen as highly taboo and illogical in ENT's time? EX: Tuvok was raised beliving in the katra while most Vulcans in T'Pol's time think katras are a myth). Tuvok speaks about questioning his faith in katras, he has a holoprogram that seems to take place in a monastery, he puts great stock in prayer (his wife and children say prayers for his safe return and he is sure to tell Neelix that the temple they go to is among the holiest on Vulcan), some of his favorite music is monks chanting, and he was pursuing the kolinahr in his youth - the only reason he didn't complete it being that he went through the pon farr and chose to be with T'Pel instead. To me, it would make sense if the Rite of Tal'oth was only undertaken by certain Vulcans who did so for spiritual reasons or as a personal test of some kind rather than something all Vulcans do at a certain age. Tuvok later goes into Security so it's possible he's always had an interest in the kind of life-or-death strategy that such rituals (Kahs-Wan and Tal'oth) require, even if his first time in Starfleet he's shown as a Science officer, likely at his parents' "request." Speaking of, we learn in 'Flashback' that Tuvok's parents pressured him to join Starfleet AND that Tuvok's father is heavily implied to be part of Starfleet. This, and the fact that Tuvok's father specifically was namedropped as the one who disowned him as a teenager makes me wonder whether or not Tuvok was pressured to participate in the Tal'oth ritual - perhaps as a way to prove himself Vulcan once again (after his adolescent failure). Or even as a preparatory method for Starfleet itself since his father was/is part of it. "If you can't do this, how are you going to be a Starfleet officer?" sort of deal.

Just to be clear, my ask was not meant to judge you about how you love your pups! My question stemmed from a sad thing I witnessed at the last obedience trial I worked. A woman from my training club entered her two dogs that day – one got her OTCH, and the other NQ'd in open. She came out of the trial hall furious, yanking her dog's leash, and proceeded to tell us she wasn't going to "waste" any more of her time training him, because he wasn't a winner or whatever. She brought her other dog out to visit people and sniff stuff later in the afternoon, but the dog with the NQ stayed in his crate the rest of the day, and it absolutely broke my heart. Nobody else seemed to have any problem with the idea that she would totally reject one of her dogs because of his trial performance. (And what's worse is she really did stop training him and spending time with him after that.) So anyways, whenever I hear anyone say they have a favorite, all I can think of is the sad puppy sitting in the back of a van all day because he got startled during a trial. Which obviously is very very very different than "Sparty is my roommate and Troja is our dog."

That is indeed very different.

It is also different because Troja is the succesful ribbon earning certified sheltie dog and Spart? Spart is an effective DQ. Somehow still everyone's favourite.

broke stressed and didn’t study nearly enough yesterday so i have much to do today. so much class work, so much genuine work, and i need to send out so many emails and make so many appointments oh my god im going to freakkkkkkkkk out.

i feel a bit better than i did tuesday, but not by much, the only real change i’ve been able to make for myself is taking my meds on time, which is good!!! and it’s helped a lot, but oh i fear nothing will get better until all my assignments are in and submitted.

my presentation on aphrodites epithets is at like 9:30am monday and i think ill vomit! but this is ground work for a class i want to teach this summer, the start of my first organized poetry collection and i might turn it all into a zine. who knows! but like! i think it’s due tomorrow at midnight i have NOTHINGi have my NOTES and i work all day today until monday when i go back to class !!!!!!!!! AGHH it’s fine. i’m fine. everything’s fine.
