its scares me that a good chunk of the characters.(notable ones too) we need to delve deeper into them ie july leos vs august leos. also how yams is a virgo himself but putting like 2 of the arguably worst characters (karina and rod reiss) as virgos. also if yams is the creator of the world, that means aot world's god is a virgo?????
begging for astrology asks
yams put himself in a sandwich between a cop (MP ralph aug 26) and karina (sept 3) like?? virgo is notably the least populated of all the signs in my all character breakdown, like he wanted to avoid himself, but the narrative weight these virgos pull does the opposite imo
on leo: you have fallen into my trap of advanced/esoteric soapboxing: decanates. so! each sign is a 30 degree wedge in the sky. the sun moves about 1-degree per day, hence why each sun sign "season" is a month long. astrologers divide these 30 degrees into 10-degree (in sun terms, 10 days) slivers called decans. there are different ancient systems of assigning planetary rulers to these decans, but the most popular, chaldean, has uses in tarot
1st decan (mostly july), ruled by saturn: willy, niccolo, sasha, dina fritz, zeke, reiner
2nd decan, approx. aug. 2-11, ruled by jupiter: onyankapon, pieck, marcel
3rd decan, approx. aug 12-22, ruled by mars: colt, keith shadis
the decans create basically 36 mini-signs, which neatly corresponds to the minor arcana of tarot without the court cards. for leo, we're in the fire suit of wands that is the most MARtial:
1st decan = ♄ = 5 of wands
2nd decan = ♃ = 6 of wands
3rd decan = ♂ = 7 of wands
the pamela colman smith cards:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
the five of wands shows a kind of pointless fight. night of the end vibes. aggression for aggression's sake, prolonging a conflict because well! we're in it. i like seeing niccolo and reiner here as soldiers who came to paradis and were challenged and changed, much like the joining the cadets did for sasha and her libertarianism. but also, doesn't it look like stage combat like from stupid willy tybur's fuckass play?
the six of wands is so painfully what all the warriors, or soldiers in general, are taught to aspire to: surviving war, returning home, and earning recognition. it's a card for honorary marleyans, but the trio of characters whose birthdays are here is kinda sad: marcel never made it home; ony's home country is presumably rumbled; pieck only cares about her dad, not any wider renown or the myth of eldian atonement
the seven of wands is so... so... colt and shadis. oh my fucking god. i'm kinda ill looking at it ngl. they both could have saved themselves, if colt literally just ran for cover from falco's transformation, if shadis jumped ship like magath told him to, but they go down fighting, to protect other people. kids! shadis still looks at the 104th as his students. jesus christ
further things about leo in AoT:
of my chosen major characters the only paradisians are sasha and shadis
three sets of warrior + parent: dina fritz and zeke, reiner and sperm contributor, and pieck and her dad. we can throw in colt grice and his uncle
zeke, marcel, and colt. two brothers GOAT chapter episode
i've said this elsewhere but i'm quite sure the return to shiganshina arc happens in the fall, zeke, reiner, and pieck all had birthdays back to back on that docked marleyan warship, i assume. do they actually celebrate? doubt it
and not to be dark on your last point: virgo is a maiden, the mutable earth sign. i think it's genesis 7 where a million different translations say the abrahamic god made adam out of dust, clay, soil, etc. if there is a creator god, it's founder ymir.

I loved your reader x logan story!!!! it made me NEED more lol. Would you be willing to possibly write one for logan x reader where they meet at heshs wedding. Logan is best man for hesh, and reader is heshs finance maid of honor. they get forced to pair up and hate each other but then fall in love by the end of the wedding planning.
If it’s super confusing that’s okay!!
Tumblr media
A/N 🪶: I’m glad you enjoyed it! I noticed you said they meet at Hesh’s wedding but then said they fall in love by the end of the wedding planning which was sort of confusing so I made a few adjustments if that’s okay. I will say I struggled with this prompt a bit, but the challenge felt good! I'm gonna label this one an f!reader as I noticed you used her when explaining.
Warnings/Tags: Reader wears a dress, Reader is from east coast, very fluffy and sweet, Happy Ending, Spaceballs(1987) Reference, Features a couple oc!characters as reader’s friends, Logan used to tease reader for being short, Keegan and Kick get bitches

Who Would’ve Thought? Logan Walker x f!reader

You step out of the cab and grab your luggage from the trunk of the black SUV, your friends following. As your group moves to the sidewalk so as to not obstruct traffic, Wanda shades her eyes from the bright sun and looks up at the giant hotel.
“Lena’s fiancé rented out this whole place?!” Wanda exclaims in disbelief.
“Actually, it was her fiancés captain. David wasn’t even asking him to, he just brought up that they wanted some place nice and spacious for everyone and then his captain took care of it all.” Shawn corrects.
“Aw, that’s nice of him. Looks like he spared no expense either, shit!” Mara laughs.
“Looks like we’ll also be with a bunch of soldiers too, so remember to be nice! I’m looking at you, Mara.” You point.
“If they don’t mess with me, or any of you for that matter, then I won’t mess with them. Might wanna tell David to warn them too!” Mara doesn’t even look at you when she speaks, you already knew the drill after having known her and the others for so many years.
A car screeches to a stop right next to you, the door opening as Kat, your best friend since high school, jumps out and runs over to you all screaming incoherently.
“EEE! My girls!!! My best girls!!!” She manages to wrap all of you in her arms and squeezes you so tight, you begin to question if you’ll even make it to the wedding without some kind of breathing tool. Her soon-to-be husband steps out as well.
“H-Hi, Dav-id!” You squeak as Lena’s hug gets even tighter. You and your –breathless– friends endure the pain of friendship while David gets their luggage. He chuckles as he walks over to you all.
“Honey, you’re killing your friends.” He says, jokingly… you think.
“10 more seconds!” Lena shouts. David looks at each of you, smiling.
“We’ll remember all of you well, what kinda of graves do you want?” He jokes. Lena finally lets go and playfully smacks David on his arm.
“Yeah yeah, can’t a girl be happy to see her best friends?” She looks over at all of you, still smiling as wide as ever. You, Mara, Wanda and Shawn are hunched over, gasping for air as quietly, and gratefully, as possible. You hold out one of your hands.
“Good to see you in person again.” you pant. David gives you a half-hug so as not to make breathing even harder for you.
“I think you realigned my chakra with that hug.” Wanda groans.
“Which one?” Mara asks. Wanda pauses for a moment, still panting.
“All of them?” She answers. David continues giving hugs before kissing Lena on her forehead and wrapping an arm around her waist.
“I think that might just be your spine shifting back into place.” Shawn points.
“So, how was the flight over here? Nothing too bad, I hope.” David asks. You talk with them as you bring your luggage inside the hotel. All of you had a relatively quick and painless flight, ignoring your bag almost breaking open twice and Wanda needing to replace hers in the airport when it broke after the first layover. Mara and Shawn were all set and helped her pick out better suitcases. At one point, Mara offered to hold some of your things in her bag. It’s not that either of them traveled light, Shawn noted, they just packed more efficiently than you. You stuck your tongue out at her for that.
As you each receive your room keys, you hear the revolving door swirl. David looks over and waves to a small group of men, all dressed in mostly dark clothes despite the summer heat. One of them is absolutely huge with a beard, the next three are relatively similar in size and height, their eyes dark as they walked just a bit behind the older man. You recognize one of them but you can’t remember how. He holds your gaze until David begins introducing them.
“Ladies, I’d like you to meet my sweet old Captain.” He smiles as you all chuckle amongst yourselves. The man eyes David before shaking each of your hands.
“Call me Merrick. If you ever want to hear any stories about David, let me know. I suddenly have plenty to share.” Your group giggles as David deadpans and rolls his eyes before introducing the next man to come up.
“This is Keegan “The Smoothtalker” Russ, he and Merrick both worked with my dad a while back before the Federation. One of the most reliable men I know.” Keegan walks forward to shake your hands as well.
“Pleasure to make your acquaintance,” his voice is even deeper than Merrick’s, “I hope I can make your night as well.” You notice he holds onto Mara’s hand a bit longer than everyone else’s, he stares directly into her eyes. Mara doesn’t shrink at all despite his intimidating aura.
“I’d like to see you try, tough guy.” She shoots back. Keegan smirks as he steps back into his original spot. Mara doesn’t usually flirt, but when she does, it’s honestly inspirational.
David moves on to the next man, he bares some resemblance to David, actually. Wait…
“This is my brother, Logan, the first most reliable man I know.” He doesn’t say anything. Your friends offer a small wave, while you stare.
“Long time no see, Logan.” You say, smiling. He nods, smirk on his face, while David moves on. The next man is a little shorter than Keegan and Logan, but seems somewhat more approachable.
“This is Kick, the biggest nerd I know but another one of the most reliable men I know.” Kick rolls his eyes and steps forward to shake everyone’s hands.
“You may not know this but Hesh- er- David,” He corrects, “is unintentionally the funniest man I know.”
“Thanks, Kick–”
“I mean you should see him whenever he faceplants on the field after slipping, it’s like a cartoon. He gets up and it’s like he got a mud mask.” You all giggle as Kick walks back with his head high and David bites his lip as his ears turn pink.
“Don’t suppose you have pictures?” Shawn asks, Kick shakes his head but smiles.
“If I get any, I’ll send them to you right away.” David is gritting his teeth at this point.
“Okay, hun, do you wanna introduce your friends?” Lena brings her hands together, excited.
“Oh yeah! David and Logan already know her but,” She introduces you first. “She’s my best friend since high school! And this is Mara “The Baddie” Williams, and Wanda “The Mind Reader” Stevens and Shawn, who’s a nerd too! But it’s cool when she does it.”
“Interesting names. So, what qualifies you as a nerd?” Kick asks, amused.
“I did computer science and engineering in my first four years of college, then went back for my masters in computer science and I’m working on my doctoral, at the moment. I think she just calls me a nerd because I’m doing an ‘unnecessary amount of school’.” Shawn explains. Kick nods, appreciatively.
“What do you- you guys do?” Shawn seems nervous suddenly.
“I’m an IT specialist, so I also work with computers a lot.” Kick answers immediately. Shawn nods, smiling an awful lot more than usual.
“Cool, cool… and, uh, you guys?”
“As Hesh pointed out, I am apparently a ‘sweet’ and ‘old’ Captain. My job is working with these assholes and others like them.”
“Jury’s still out on the ‘sweet’ part, but everything else, yeah. I’m one of the assholes he works with, sadly.” Keegan says with a straight face.
“Same thing for Logan and I, just a couple assholes trying to make the world a better place.”
“I knew it, I’m surrounded by assholes.” Shawna jokes. Wanda turns to her.
“Did you actually just make a Spaceballs reference? Right now?”
“It is a good movie.” Kick admits.
“See, he agrees with me so it must be correct.” Shawna and Wanda bicker about the film. Lena claps her hands to get everyone's attention.
“Okay, why don’t we get our keys and head to our rooms before dinner and we can relax a bit and explore the hotel.” She suggests. As she finishes, the rotating door slides as more soldiers enter and fill up the lobby, some passing by David and clapping him on the back.
“I gotta stay here to help everyone else get comfortable, but you guys go on ahead.” David and Lena share a quick kiss before she turns. She pulls out her key card and excitedly ran off and then ran back to grab her luggage and waved goodbye.
“It was nice to meet you all! See you at dinner!” With the weight of her luggage, it was more of a speed walk. You and the girls wave goodbye and follow her to the big elevator centered in the lobby. As you walk, you feel eyes on you. Once you get to the elevator and wait, you look around. It doesn’t take much to find out what’s wrong. You look back over towards David and see Logan staring in your direction. You hold his gaze for a moment and force yourself to wave at him. He just looks away, focusing on whatever David is talking about with his group.
You ignore the interaction (if you can even call it that) and join into the conversation your friends are having. Lena is explaining the schedule while Shawna corrects her.
“Okay, so! We have dinner at 6:30! It’s like noon right now-”
“It’s 1:30.”
“Same thing! So, I got a room for all of us to share so we can be roommates!”
“Like it’s college again!” Wanda interjects.
All of you file into the elevator and go to your shared room. There’s five beds spread out amongst the room. The bathroom includes a separate bath and shower with multiple baskets of travel size toiletries lined along the side of the bathtub. You all set down your luggage beside one of the beds and sit down on the soft mattress and plush covers, talking amongst yourselves while you clean up for dinner.
After a few hours, you head down to the hotel restaurant. There were many tables filled already by David’s military friends. Him, Logan and his friends you met earlier sit at one table amongst their peers while Lena leads you to a different table that’s within their view. Logan can easily just stare directly at you from his spot which is exactly what he’s doing. When you look at him, you see the smile on his face. You almost immediately feel the weight of possible insults he could throw at you.
When you were younger, you knew the Walker boys when they attended the same middle school as you on the east coast since their family was moving around a lot at the time before going back to San Diego. While Logan was quiet then, he still managed to make silent jokes at your expense. He’d rest his elbow on your head or bend his knees or hunch over dramatically to highlight the height difference between you two at the time. One time, he saw a chihuahua being walked by its owner and pointed at it then pointed at you before patting your head and continuing to walk beside David, their longer strides made it hard for you to catch up.
None of those jokes seem to come from him now but it left an imprint at the time that was apparently enough to make you self-conscious in front of him these days.
Maybe I should’ve worn heels, you thought.
Whatever, it's too late now. Lena put her purse down in her chair.
“I’ll be right back!” and she scurried off to see David. Their happiness is worth it. You can get through the dinner. You and your friends take a look at the menu. Before long, everyone’s ordering and drinking together. Lena’s since returned from the other table and excitedly talks about the hotel. “It’s so nice, I can’t wait to explore it with all of you. I think I heard they have an arcade room somewhere.” As everyone talks, your phone buzzes.
Unknown Number: Can you tell Lena I said thank you for giving me your number?
Who the fu-
You look up at Logan again. That same damn smile on his face, phone in hand. His smile looks so damn genuine but you can’t help but feel like it’s fake. You look at Lena.
“You gave him my number?!” You whisper yell.
“Oh yeah! He asked me for it and I thought ‘Why not’, so now you guys can catch up a bit while everything’s going on.”
As much as you want to grab her by the shoulders and shake her silly, you can’t. She was trying to be nice and this was something for you to take up with him yourself, like an adult. You exhale through your nose and show her the text.
“He wanted me to say thanks.” You chuckle. You refuse to ruin her mood in any way on the week of her wedding, especially if she’s done nothing wrong. She smiles and turns to look at Logan, bringing two thumbs up which he returns. You bite your tongue and type in his name for the contact before typing more.
You: It’s rude to text during dinner
Logan Walker: Tell that to Kick and your friend.
With wrinkled brows, you look up at your table and see Shawn typing which is strange because Shawn’s the one who reminds everyone of table etiquette. You look between Kick and Shawn, remembering their interaction earlier. Oh?
“Shawn, what happened to your table manners?” You ask, trying not to smile. She looks up with wide eyes, suddenly shy again.
“Oh! Sorry, I, um…” Her phone buzzes. Lena finished sipping her wine.
“Guilty, I may or may not have given Kick her number too!” Lena chimes in.
“It’s been like 5 minutes and you’re already forgetting table manners? Okay, Shawn, I see you.” Shawn flushes at your comment and finishes a quick text before putting her phone away, smiling at Kick who sees her and smiles back.
“Done now! So, what were we talking about?” Shawn’s face is still red as she attempts to shift the conversation. As Mara and Wanda poke and prod, your phone vibrates.
Logan Walker: Since it’s so rude, I’ll text you after dinner.
You: Much appreciated
Logan Walker: But before I do, I just wanted to say you look nice tonight.
You: I feel a joke coming on
Logan Walker: A joke?
You: Nevermind
You shove your phone in your bag and get back to the conversation at hand. Not too long after, dinner is served. You share laughs and drinks, as well as small bites of your gourmet meals. Afterwards, dessert is served. You can’t tell which course you enjoyed more but both taste like heaven.
When the night is over, everyone heads back to their rooms, aside from Lena and David who spend some time together away from their “roommates”. You sit in bed, showered and ready to sleep when you remember the texts. You pick up your phone and read.
Logan Walker: So what did you mean by joke?
You: You remember in middle school when you’d always make fun of my height
Logan Walker: Oh.
The hell does “Oh.” mean?
Logan Walker: And you thought I was gonna make fun of you tonight?
You: I was expecting it yeah
Logan Walker: I meant what I said earlier.
Logan Walker: I didn’t realize I bothered you so much back then.
You wait a few seconds, seeing three dots appear and disappear a couple times.
Logan Walker: I’m sorry.
He’s apologizing? You debate your response in your head.
You: Thanks
Logan Walker: I’ll let you be, it’s late. I’ll see you at brunch tomorrow.
Logan Walker: Don’t be late.
You: I am never late
Logan Walker: You were late to dinner.
You: I was right on time!
Logan Walker: In the military, if you aren’t early, you’re late.
You: The bride decides the time of arrival
Logan Walker: You made that up.
You: You’re applying a military “rule” to civilians
Logan doesn’t respond for a few seconds. You don’t see any dots.
You: I got you there
You: Goodnight mr sergeant walker sir
You immediately put down your phone smiling to yourself as though you just broke a rule in an elementary school class on purpose and feel that little rush of doing something “bad”. If your friends weren’t sleeping, you’d probably be giggling or some shit like a damn schoolgirl. As you roll over on your side, ready to sleep, you realize something. Logan Walker made you smile. You go to bed feeling warm and fuzzy.
You wake up the next morning to Lena shaking you awake before she moves on to the others. You collectively get ready and head out by 10:30 for brunch. Before the doors open, you swear you can already smell the food. You eat in the same restaurant area of the hotel as you did last night. While the tables remain in the same spots, the room has brought in more tables, all divided into sections where chefs make and serve food. You can even see the spice racks hanging on the walls that must’ve been moved in here. As everyone moves throughout the room, you sit down with Mara and Wanda. Lena joins not too long after.
“Where’s Shawn?” She asks. Mara looks around and points, smiling. Shawn is walking around beside Kick as they talk, almost looking excited. Kick intently listens and you notice whenever he finishes talking, Shawn’s smile gets a little wider. Wanda pulls out her phone and sends a quick text before eying Shawn carefully. Shawn pulls her phone out, Kick waiting patiently. Suddenly, she looks up at your table of smirks and turns back to Kick giggling, her face already red. After a minute more of talking, they go their separate ways. You see Kick sit beside Logan and he makes a comment that has Kick rolling his eyes. Logan’s eyes turn to you and he smiles. This time you smile back at him and get to eating.
The next couple days are a blur. You and your friends explore inside and outside the hotel, hanging out in mud baths at the spa with some other ladies, and you think you see a couple men too, from the military getting massages. As much as you want one as well, they probably need it more if the content groaning you hear says anything. You’re all sure to say thank you before heading out for shopping. You already brought your bridesmaid dress, but you see a pale blue dress with flowy sleeves that you must have. You notice Mara, Shawn and Wanda have matching dresses tailored to their style and body, their dresses are nearly at the floor and the sleeves go to their wrists whereas yours stops before your elbows and the hem is a little above your ankles. They all wear a variety of darker shades of blue while yours is noticeably more pastel than theirs.
“Oh, I didn’t realize you already picked out dresses! Do they have more of those?” Lena grabs you by the shoulders, a firm grip.
“You won’t be needing to match them! In fact, it’s good you won’t.” She has another excited look on her face. Before you can ask her what wicked thing she has planned, she spreads her arms out in front of you.
“You’re my maid of honor!” Your mouth drops open. You look at the others who are all smiling almost as wide as her.
“You little shits, did you plan this?!” You know the answer and they all confirm with a nod and you squeal, giving Lena a bear hug. Both of you practically fighting to crush the other in your arms, but lovingly so. Eventually, everyone joins in.
After more shopping and spending time with your girls, you text Logan to let him know you were all heading back. The wedding was tomorrow and your favorite love birds, David and Lena, already had arrangements to make sure they didn’t see each other at least 24 hours before the wedding.
Logan Walker: Don’t worry, we have him locked in the bathroom.
You: Will that hold him?
Logan Walker: No, but this is what we’re trained for.
You: You’re trained to hold your brother in a bathroom?
Logan Walker: The army prepares us for everything.
You felt bold tonight.
You: What else are you prepared for?
Logan Walker: Can’t say, surprise attacks only work when no one expects them.
You: Are you gonna attack me?
Logan Walker: Maybe. Probably.
Logan Walker: Only if you give me a reason to.
You: Yeah ok soldier boy
You suddenly feel like you’re in trouble.
You: I’m sorry
Logan Walker: You’re in room 345, right?
You: …no
Logan Walker: You have 5 seconds to tell me the truth.
You: IM SORRY
Logan Walker: 4
You: IM INNOCENT
Logan Walker: 3
You: LOGAN NO
Logan Walker: 2
You: OKAY FINE
You: YES
You: SHIT
You: Fuckin interrogating me
Logan Walker: It’s my job.
You: Is it tho?
Logan Walker: When necessary.
You: Yeah that’s not ominous at all
You: Wedding’s tomorrow
Logan Walker: Oh, is it? I didn’t know that.
You: Yeah okay stupid comment
Logan Walker: Happens to the best of us.
You: So you admit I’m the best?
There’s a pause.
Logan Walker: Goodnight.
You: Thats a yes!
You: Im calling it a yes!
You: Im the best!
You see he’s reading your texts but not answering and decide to stop.
You: Goodnight
Before you can put your phone down, it vibrates.
Logan Walker: I’ll see you tomorrow. Sleep well.
And the conversation ends there.
Finally, the morning comes and Lena can’t sit still. After having to text back and forth with Logan about moving through the hotel so the couple doesn’t see one another, everyone heads out. You make it safely to the bride’s dressing room with everything you need. The hair stylist and makeup artist are already there and greet you inside. Lena’s mom has also joined to help her with the dress. Before you and the bridesmaids start getting ready, you take turns going out in casual clothes to get small snacks and water for everyone. You talk about the schedule of the day and occasionally past weddings you’ve attended.
Sometimes, Lena’s mom chimes in about her wedding, and the disaster it almost became multiple times the day of. From the makeup artist getting food poisoning when only half her face was done, the marriage officiant came in with crutches and a limp, the cake was almost destroyed when it was left somewhere in the hotel and no one knew where (keeping in mind the hotel you’re in is smaller than the even fancier hotel her mom was married in.).
As time continued going on and you all got yourselves together, it was time. Lena’s beautiful in her long white dress and veil that framed her face. Mara, Shawn and Wanda look amazing in their darker hues. Lena’s mom’s trying not to cry. And you felt pretty. Not even pretty, shit, you felt gorgeous. After thanking the makeup artist and hair stylist, you head out.
Lena and her mom walk arm in arm, David is biting his lip as he fails to contain a wide smile. You’re sure you can see tears in his eyes. You and Shawn and Mara and Wanda walk in pairs behind Lena. As Lena stands across from David, you stand on the far left side of the front with Mara, Shawn and Wanda standing to your right. You look across the way at the groomsmen. At Logan. Where your dress is lighter than the bridesmaids, his suit is lighter than his fellow groomsmen. The groomsmens suits are dull in comparison to the bridesmaids. Everyone still looks great and matches wonderfully. Logan looks so handsome. The entire time, you guys eye each other when the other looks away. Lena is crying and David is trying to hold back his tears, both still smiling at one another.
The vows and kiss are what break David, even with tears he continues smiling at his bride while everyone claps. Logan’s smiles and all of the groomsmen crowd around him as the photographer stands in the middle of the aisle. Then you, the bridesmaids and Lena take a photo as well. You spend almost another hour taking photos of everyone together in the venue before the afterparty ceremony begins. The toast and dinner seems to bring everyone even closer, you find yourself talking with a few other soldiers. Afterwards, at the cake cutting, Lena and David hold the knife together and pick out a slice. Lena swipes her finger against the knife, picking up the leftover frosting, before lightly pressing her finger onto the tip of David’s nose. He stares at her for a second before squishing his nose onto her cheek, returning the frosting.  The interaction is held onto by the photographer taking pictures of the moment.
A few minutes later, David and Lena come up to you.
“So, how do you like dancing?” She asks.
“... You’re planning something again, aren’t you?” You respond, all too aware of her tendencies.
“Oh, no.”
“You’re not?”
“No. It was already planned.”
“What was planned?”
“So, the best man and maid of honor are expected to be paired for the dancing.” She’s smiling as though something mischievous has happened.
“So…” Logan appears before you can ask anything.
“Logan’s my best man. Lena was telling me about her plans for the bridesmaids dresses, so I did the same for the groomsmens suits.” David explains. Your face feels warm.
“W-Well, I’m ready when you guys are. Just, uh, say the word.”
“The word is now!” The music immediately changes to something soft and sweet. David and Lena move to the middle of the room. You and Logan stand on the opposite side of the floor to the tables. You back at Logan and do a double take when you see Kick and Shawn on the other side of Lena and David. You smile at her, her face is more red than ever. You think you see the redness goes all the way to her hands, of which Kick holds tenderly. Kick looks over and smiles at the both of you. You look back to Logan and think about the whole situation. Your best friend is getting married, your other friend apparently has a love interest, and you have some kind of maybe love interest person, kind of, possibly (good lord, even your thoughts are flustered). You see Shawn pointing towards the tables and Kick chuckles. You look over and your jaw drops.
Just off to the side of the tables, away from the dance floor, Mara leans against Keegan while he has his hands around her waist. He rests his chin on her head while she covers her face in her hands, giggling. Were all of you reduced to fits of giggles because of military men? Apparently so. As all of you chuckle to yourselves, you look at Logan. He’s smirking at you, his cheeks are a little pink.
“Hi…” You whisper, staring into his eyes.
“Hi.” He whispers back, staring back at you.
“I’m glad I saw you again, Logan.”
“Me too.” He pauses for a moment. “You still on the east coast?”
“Yeah, yeah. Never really left. It’s just my place, I guess.”
“Everyone has their place in the world.”
“I guess they do, yeah.”
“Would you mind if, after all of this, I visited?” You blink, a smile slowly creeps onto your face.
“I’d like it if you did.” Logan smiles wide and attempts to keep his cool. The flow of the conversation is interrupted by Wanda sauntering over.
“Hehe, hi guys.” Her words are almost slurred.
“Wanda, how much have you had tonight?” She pauses a moment, thinking.
“Um, I think, like, maybe a couple?”
“A couple?” You and Logan have stopped moving at this point, but your hand is still in his and his other hand remains on your hip. You’re both smiling to yourselves.
“Yeah, hehe.” Merrick walks up behind her. “Oh, hi, Captain sir!” He silently brings his arms around her stomach and lifts her just enough to get her feet off the floor, allowing him to walk away while Wanda continues her drunken giggling. You watch as he sets her down and instructs her to sit in a chair, before moving all alcoholic drinks away. She pouts looking at the cup of water that just so happens to be in front of her. You start laughing, trying to be silent so as to not draw attention away from Lena, but your fit has you putting your forehead on Logan’s chest. You feel him rumbling from his chuckles. You look back up and catch Lena laughing and directing Logan to a Merrick, who’s smirking down at the still pouting Wanda. Everyone’s happy tonight it seems. Even as the party dies down, it stays that way. Full of happiness.
~A couple months later~
You walk to your front door after hearing a firm couple of knocks. You look through the peephole and smile to yourself, heart pulsing. Opening the door, you see the man you’ve been waiting for. Logan grins, moving forward to pull you into a tight hug. His arms are always so warm, you’ve noticed.
“I missed you so much, what took so long?” You ask.
“A nearly canceled flight, traffic, there’s more if you wanna hear about it.” He answers, grabbing his luggage and bringing it in.
“Tell me everything! I’m still making dinner.” You spend the next thirty or so minutes cooking and talking, Logan talks and tastes the food intermittently. His vacation consists of exploring your town and attending special events throughout his time here. You catch up on your lives, or as much as he can tell you about. Originally, it was supposed to be two weeks of staying at your home. This changed to three, then four, and so on until Logan ended up changing his address  and bringing in boxes. While he still has to leave for months at a time every once in a while, it makes seeing him worth it.
Then the day comes when he’s home for good. He stays in the state with a new job. You learn to lose the fear of losing him with every night you spend in one another's arms. Years later, you’re having your own wedding with him. Your friends wear similar bridesmaids dresses and groomsmen suits to remind yourselves of the event that led to this… the happiest moment of your life.
I hope you enjoyed this. Thank you for your request. I will add this to my CoD Stories series on Ao3 @ RiversSong82

Winter Reading Challenge book recommendations ❆
.... we just couldn't settle on only 4 recs for this prompt, so have 8 instead! to avoid clogging up people's dashes, we hid some of the blurbs beneath the cut.
Tumblr media
The Abyss Surrounds Us by Emily Skrutskie
Cas Leung, a Reckoner-trainer-in-training, has been around sea monsters raised to defend ships from pirates all her life. But when her first solo mission goes awry and she falls into the hands of the pirate queen Santa Elena, she is suddenly training a Reckoner pup to defend the ship she was always taught to destroy. Or - sea monsters, morally grey lesbian pirates, enemies to lovers, there-was-only-one-bed, handcuffed-together central. (blurb by our brilliant @asteristudy)
Last Night at the Telegraph Club by Malinda Lo
A historical coming of age story, set in the 1950s San Francisco, following a 17 year old heroine, growing up as Chinese American at the time of the Red Scare, through family bonds and conflict, her sapphic awakening and so much more. Also, this novel really highlights the importance of representation. (blurb by the lovely @kkul-bee)
Snapdragon by Kat Leyh
A sweet and endearingly weird graphic novel following Snap, who just wants to rescue opossum babies but accidentally befriends the local witch. Things may or may not spiral from there. (blurb by our amozing @upside-down-uni)
People Notice the Rain by Cindy Paul
A beautiful, smoothly unravelling narrative meets truly atmospheric writing in this story of growth and trust, with the added sprinkle of the supernatural. Fresh and exciting, and most importantly, inclusive in a way that feels as effortless as breathing. Truly worth picking up, even if werewolf stories aren’t your cup of tea - this just might change your opinion (it did mine)(I still cannot believe it). Each book in the trilogy introduces more different identities, ending with, quite literally, a single token straight in the (found) family. Oh, there’s also d&d and gorgeous weather motifs that just tie the tale together perfectly. (blurb by yours truly, @bulletnotestudies)
The Binding by Bridget Collins
Emmett is summoned to an apprenticeship with the local book binder - in a world in which book binding is considered witchcraft. In a challenging story we follow along when Emmett learns the truth behind his bookbinder's work and has to face his past. (blurb by our wonderful @hannistudies)
The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab
Beware of the gods that answer after the dark, for they may grant you eternal life but no one will remember you. Desperate to flee the future others have set for her in 1714, Addie prays for more time and thus enters a contract with the dark: she will live forever, but everyone she meets will forget her. Addie faces centuries and their challenges alone, until one day, in 2014, she meets a young man. And even though the door closed behind her - he remembers. (blurb by our wonderful @hannistudies)
The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon
Decades into the future, an Irish heroine flees home and becomes part of an underground voyant syndicate. One day, she is caught by vigiles and transported to a city where voyants are enslaved and forced to serve a different type of etheral being. There she discovers the truth behind Scion - the flourishing empire. Or so she thinks... Writing that leaves clues all over. You get maps and lists of characters with short descriptions, you get heist-like plot lines, plot twists and tropes. And then reversed tropes and the tropes you got first reversed or simply undone. Non-binary side characters and disability representation. A demisexual mc. Just read it. (blurb by @hannistudies and @bulletnotestudies)
Of Fire and Stars by Audrey Coulthurst
Denna is betrothed to a prince to ensure peace in their kingdoms, but she has more to hide than just her forbidden magic when she falls for his sister. Forced to hide her abilities and fulfill her duties, she learns about political tension between her new kingdom and its neighbours - and has to make a difficult decision. (blurb by our wonderful @hannistudies)
---
Honorable mentions: Queens of Geek - Jen Wilde They both die at the end - Adam Silvera The Gloaming - Kirsty Logan The Watchmaker of Filigree Street - Natasha Pulley The Stars and the Blackness Between - Junauda Petrus An Absolutely Remarkable Thing - Hank Green Even If We Break - Marieke Nijkamp

Our sweet friends @wackydrabbles are celebrating! Why? They have been prompting, reading, sharing and posting fics for *almost* 100 weeks-- ONE HUNDRED WEEKS, Y'ALL! As they countdown to the BIG 1-0-0, they are hosting a variety of challenges to win fun prizes.
This Week's Question: A dribble, a drabble. Wacky drabbles can be up to 2k. Can you take this special prompt and write a short fic UNDER 300 words? (Prompt will be in bold)
I love it when [I/you/he/she/they/name] win(s).
Book: TNA
Word count: 300
Warning: a few curse words; a little angsty; a little fluffy
A/N: the characters belong to PB; I've actually been writing this story for a one-shot, but when I saw the WD prompt, I thought this would be so much more fun-- AND IT WAS; in my HC, this takes place around M&M's 8th Birthday, approximately 2 months after Italy.
*friendly reminder: adopt-- do NOT shop for your pets.
***
"Brynn?" irritation drips from Sam's bellow.
"Hi, sweetie!" Bounding from the kitchen, Brynn boasts a toothy smile. "I baked your--"
"Where is he?" Sam snarls, meeting her in the foyer.
"Huh?" She reaches to hug his waist. "Babe, did you have a bad--?"
"Don't play stupid. Where is he?" He shakes off her touch.
"Who?"
"The dog!" growls Sam, grabbing her shoulders. "Where the fuck is the dog?"
Brynn sighs, crossing her arms. "The boys are drying him--"
"He can dry outside. Take him back." Yanking at his tie, Sam storms towards his room.
"But, Sam," a sadness infiltrates her voice, "he's a stray--"
"Call animal control."
"They'll kill him!" she yelps. "Please, I told the boys we'd talk--"
"Then you can tell them that their babysitter makes empty promises." He slams the door.
Brynn tearfully tells the twins the news; however, she encourages them to demonstrate an act of kindness: rehoming the dog.
After making flyers, they locked the stray in the laundry room with blankets and water.
"We're gonna hang posters," Brynn hollers through Sam's door, "wanna come?"
No answer.
Brynn escorts the boys back to Central Park. After three hours of taping flyers and talking to neighbors, she and the twins return with no prospects.
"Sam?" she calls out as she heads to his room, noticing his door is open. She glances around the room before heading to his office.
She swings open the study door. "Sweetie--?" She stops in her tracks: no Sam.
She slowly swallows, remembering his anger. Keeping her cool, she darts to the laundry room to ensure the dog is still there. And not at the pound.
She twists the doorknob, carefully peeking around the door. Her breath hitches, fingers scrambling for her phone.
Oh my God.
Tumblr media
I love it when I win.

Hello BINGO buddy! Since I LOVE seeing lots of OCs, with this ask I challenge you to create a new OC plot bunny and tell me about them with this ask - any fandom, any faceclaim, any pairing - the only rule is you can't have already thought of them. 😜 Don't worry, I won't make you write them . . . unless you ask me to force you. haha.
ajhgkwrpogawrkjoiwrjhgposwahgjaijrgwporj Alright I think I got one that has nothing to do with any previous inklings or plot bunnies I've previously had Ruthie Bryce (Faceclaim: Kat Graham fandom Umbrella Academy pairing idk yet that usually comes with writing, but probably Diego) Commonly referred to as RJ (Her middle name is Joan after her mother) because that's her professional name. She's a photographer. Weddings, mostly in the Summer, crime scenes in the off seasons when things are slow. When things are really slow and she's broke and desperate she absolutely will take on sleazy private eye cheating cases, the only reason she got a PI license in the first place, so she could cover her legal bases. It was her father, a lawyer Shawn Brcye, who taught her she could never be too careful. He was also the one who refused to sell RJ to Reginald when he came looking for the miracle baby. RJ grew up mostly normal other than her elemental powers. Fire, air, water, earth, even darkness and spirit, if it was ever considered an element RJ could bend it to her will. But that didn't mean it was always under her control. As a teenager as the mood swings spiked through puberty so did her powers. After RJ burned down their house because of a nightmare Shawn had no choice but to seek Reginald out. Which is how at fourteen RJ joined the Academy. RJ was kept in a room far from everyone else's so she couldn't hurt anyone with another accidental fire. But being a curious child and not yet used to the forced isolation RJ spent what little free time she had exploring the Academy. Finding the hidden passageways and the secrets tucked away in the basement was easy and RJ was quick to realize that despite his public image Reginald Hargreeves was not a good person. He might have had good intentions, but the road to hell was paved with them and the Academy was certainly it's own kind of hell. After that it was hard for her to bond with Luther as he still looked up to Reginald and thought he had a plan for them. And even harder to bond with Pogo who she could see was Reginald's right hand man and designated secret keeper. And since Allison took Luther's side RJ wasn't particularly close to her either. However RJ made a point of getting close to Vanya because the way Reginald and the other members of the Academy treated her just made RJ deeply uncomfortable. RJ tried to save Ben but instead wound up caught in the crossfire which resulted in a long scar along her back which she keeps covered as much as possible. Only a few people have seen it and those that have were either a.) in the room when Grace was patching her up (Reginald/Pogo) b.) someone RJ trusts completely. After Ben died RJ only stayed until Klaus, Vanya, and Diego got out then she moved back in with her father. From there she put her life together, trying to put the worst parts of the Academy behind her while still keeping what few bright spots had come out of it. She would have even tried to smother her own powers, but she'd learned the hard way that suppressing them only made them rebound twice as hard. And then came Reginald's funeral. RJ could have cried for joy. The wicked witch, the man who'd gotten Ben killed, was dead. She went, just to make sure it was real and not another one of his little tests. And if it was a test RJ was going to kill him herself. And then the infamous Five returned. And he's squirrely and short both in temper and stature and RJ doesn't know him well enough to know if this is normal behavior or not. So she follows him to Griddy's. And after she helps him take down a team of assassins she demands answers. He tells her that he and his family have a week to stop the apocalypse. He even goes so far as to tell her that while her powers might be useful he doesn't think an outsider should be involved. (A pathetic attempt to push her away because the only things he knows about her come from Vanya's book and he doesn't have the time to factor in a whole new person into his plan. (not that he has much of one)) RJ rightfully calls him out and
tells him she's helping whether he likes it or not, after all she's one of the idiots who has to live in the world and she's got the abilities and training to so she might as well try and help.

(I’d be) everything you need
(Niall’s texts are in bold, Katie’s are in italics)
“Mum, I swear I’ll be fine. I’ll place an order and just get some takeaway tonight.” Katie assured, having had this discussion pretty much every time they spoke over the last few days.
“Bug, you have no idea how long an order is processed right now. It can take up to a week, if not longer. You can’t order all your meals,” her mum reasoned.
“Well, what do you want me to do?” she huffed irritated. Sure, she knew her mum had the best intentions and was probably worried, but she had just gotten off the flight. It was an especially cold and windy night in England and all she wanted was to get into her bed. Even the perspective of having to spend the next two weeks locked up in her flat, didn’t make her crave home any less.
“Just call Niall. I’m sure he’d be happy to help.”
Katie rolled her eyes, glad her mother couldn’t see her. She mentioned asking Niall for help before Katie even left the country. But she did not want to contact Niall. Her and Niall weren’t exactly friends. Sure, they’ve known each other for years, but Niall Horan was Josh’s friend, not hers. Did she have a crush on her older brother’s best friend? Well, that was a whole other story and not the point at all.
She hadn’t even seen Niall in forever. The last time they were both back home was over a year ago. And now she was just supposed to call him up and ask for help? Katie did not like asking for help, having to rely on others, owe any favours. Especially from people who weren’t her family. Or family-like.
“Okay, mum, I’m getting into the cab. Have a good night, yeah?” she said, partly because she did indeed hail a taxi, but mostly because she didn’t want to go in circles in this conversation, they’ve been over it already. Sure, Katie didn’t really have anyone close enough to rely on at times like these, she had a few colleagues, but those were mates to go to a pub with once a month or have a small chat in the break room, not burden them with groceries, because of the mandatory quarantine upon her return.
Her mum sighed, knowing she couldn’t make her daughter do anything. “You too, sweetie. Keep in touch, please. Let me know if anything is wrong,” she said, the worry evident in her voice.
“Of course, love you,” Katie replied, her irritation dissolving slightly. There wasn’t a doubt in her head that her mum’s heart was in the right place, but she hated when people worried about her like that, some part of her always felt guilty for making them feel that way.
  1st day of quarantine
“Hello?” Katie answered her ringing phone, curious about who it might be. It was usual for her to get unknown calls on her work phone, but not her private one.
“Kitty Kat!” She didn’t even have to ask to know who was on the other side of the line, not only the booming happy voice was familiar, but there was only one person who called her that. And even though she spent years telling him that the nickname was awful, after not hearing it for so long, it made her smile.
“Hello Niall,” she said, setting her laptop down on the coffee table and focusing on the call.
“Heard you need some help. I did hesitate to accept though, because I was quite hurt it was Josh calling me and not you.” He sounded exactly how she remembered, his voice laced with a joking undertone, his usual easygoing attitude seeping through.
“I… I’m fine, really.” Katie was gonna kill her brother. Maybe he wanted to help, but he made her look incompetent to take care of herself, which she did not appreciate.
“Oh, so you’re not stuck at home for the next two weeks with an empty fridge?” She didn’t even have to see Niall to know he just raised a brow in mock surprise. She could just tell from his tone. But she did wonder what he looked like now. Whether his hair was still natural brown instead of the blonde he used to dye it. Whether his shoulders were even wider than the last time she had seen him. Whether he still had a very small belly from all the beer he had been drinking or maybe he had abs now.
“Umm.. No, I have some leftover takeaway from last night,” she assured, just slightly embarrassed.
He sighed. “Look, it’s no problem, I promise. Just text me the list, I have a few hours before work anyway.”
Katie hesitated for a moment, but no matter how much she hated admitting it, she really did need help. “Okay, thank you.”
“Oh and text me your address, too. How does your brother not know where you live?” He sounded surprised, which she understood, considering she had a pretty good relationship with Josh.
She chuckled. “Because he’s a little prick who hasn’t visited me yet. And surprisingly enough, he never orders me any gifts.”
Niall snickered. “He’s twice your height, I think that’s barely ‘little’. And he’s older.”
“Heeeey, he’s not that much taller than me!” She whined offended, even though he was.
He let out a laugh, a true belly laugh, one she hadn’t heard in years actually. But she’d know that laugh anytime anywhere, he just had one of those special ones. “Sure, sure. And he’s not even that tall either, you’re just tiny.”
“No, I’m not!” She disagreed, although she definitely didn’t count to the tall part of the population. But she was not that short.
“That’s okay, you’re cute.” His words made Katie blush. She was sure he thought nothing of them, the words slipping easily off his tongue, like he didn’t even have to think about them. “Oh and don’t do that thing when you’ll try and buy everything for the next two weeks, I really don’t mind doing a few more grocery runs for you. Wouldn’t want you to get sick from unfresh foods.”
She licked her lips to keep from smiling, because of how thoughtful he was. “Thank you.”
“Okay, I’m hanging up then, it’s good to talk to you again, Kitty Kat.” The whole conversation made her heart beat a teeny tiny bit faster, the warmth of hearing a familiar voice and Niall being so nice, flowing through her entire body.
“You too, Niall. And thank you, I’ll send the list in a minute.”
So she did, trying to keep it as basic as possible, only the actual necessary products. Her intercom rang a mere hour later. She buzzed Niall in and waited behind closed doors, having to restrain herself from observing him through the peephole. He knocked on her door softly to let her know he was leaving the bags. She waited a few seconds, giving him time to leave safely, after all the whole point of this was avoiding interactions with other people. She brought the bags inside and pretty much sprinted to the window, hoping he hadn’t left yet. She was lucky enough to have a window going out onto the entrance of the building.
It was a few seconds before Niall appeared outside. Katie didn’t have a clear view of him, especially not his face, but she noticed his hair was darker, long gone was the blonde he used to dye it into. He seemed taller, though that was pretty unlikely. More muscular. He looked grown up. Seeing him like this, after quite some time, she felt a slight flutter in her stomach. It made her excited. And Katie wondered whether he thought about her like that, imagining what she looked like now, whether she changed, what hairstyle was she wearing, whether she gained weight or slimmed down, what kind of makeup did she like now. Was he excited to find out?
She didn’t like admitting it, but truth be told, she always had a little crush on Niall Horan. And Katie hated it, because it was such a cliche, liking your older brother’s best friend. But she did. Niall was funny and kind. He loved bickering with her, but it wasn’t like her brother’s teasing, it made her feel special. He had a nickname just for her. Kitty Kat came to be because Josh liked calling her Kate, knowing she hated it, it not being her actual name. But Niall’s nickname didn’t make her irritated, no matter how much she pretended it did. It made her warm inside, like she was important enough to be referred to in an individual way.
But she had to stop thinking those thoughts Niall was helping her because he had a good heart. And because he was a family friend. That was it. He did not have a special place in his heart for her, no matter how much she imagined he maybe did in the past.
She moved from the window a few minutes after he disappeared and went to unpack the groceries. She was irritated there was no receipt, Niall was supposed to let her know how much she owed him, having refused when she offered to transfer some money beforehand. But there was another piece of paper. A post-it note stuck to the carton of eggs.
please let me know as soon as you need anything else. i’ll be doing some shopping for myself later in the week, so it’s no problem. happy to help, N xx
She refused to dwell on the xs. But the note as a whole was very sweet. In fact, Katie may or may not have put it on her fridge.
  5th day of quarantine
Katie was trying to work through the splitting headache, but it was not going well. The last three days, she felt like the headache and burning eyes were her only constant companions. Other than that, she was feeling okay. No cough, no temperature, nothing. It was just because she was staring at the screen all day (and some nights), working and working, crunching numbers, filling and checking spreadsheets. Her eye actually started twitching yesterday, which wasn’t a good sign. Unfortunately, she ran out of ibuprofen. And magnesium. She was quite desperate, the pain making it near impossible to focus on anything.
So eventually, she gave in, sending a text to Niall.
very sorry to be a bother, but could you maybe possibly go to the pharmacy for me?
She did not expect her phone to start ringing just a second after. Since that first day, Niall hadn’t called her. He checked in on her a few times (almost every day, sometimes just sending her memes or funny things that happened to him, instead of starting the conversation with “are you alright?”), but it was always through texts. But now he was calling her and she was so shocked, it must have been at least a fourth ring when she answered.
“Hiya, sorry, it’s okay if -” she started.
He didn’t let her finish though, rushing out his questions, sounding a little bit worried. “What’s wrong? Are you feeling alright?”
“Yeah, I’m okay, just ran out of ibuprofen,” she explained.
“Do you have any symptoms?” he asked, not entirely convinced.
“No, no, it’s not that,” she assured. “Just a splitting headache from too much work and computer time. And also a magnesium deficiency, probably.”
“Are you sure?” he asked again, but this time his voice was much calmer, almost back to normal.
“Yes, I’ve been drinking a shit ton of coffee everyday to even attempt to keep up with my work and I’m just a bit wiped out.”
“Okay, I can’t really go out right now, I’m at work, but -”
This time Katie was the one who cut him off. “Oh, it’s fine, really.”
“BUT,” he continued despite the interruption, his voice a bit more stern, “I just texted my roommate, so it shouldn’t take too long.”
If only he could see her now, he would notice a look of horror that crossed her face. “No, Niall, I don’t want to bother anyone.”
“Oh stop, he’s a nice guy and he can leave his work for half an hour. He owed me a favour anyway.” Niall made it seem like the most trivial thing and she really did need the medicine, so she gave up fighting.
“Well, be sure to thank him for me,” she said instead. “Buy him a nice beer.”
He chuckled. “Okay, I will. But you’re really okay? You’d tell me if you were getting sick, right?”
“Well, it’s not like you could come take care of me anyway.” She meant it as a joke, expecting Niall to let out another of his signature chuckles, but he did quite the opposite, sounding a bit exasperated.
 “Why not?”
“I can’t exactly see people at the moment, remember?” She said gently, not really sure about his mood.
Niall huffed. “Do you really think I’d care about that? Just let you be alone if you were sick?”
She swallowed, her throat suddenly dry. All she wanted to ask was ‘why wouldn’t you’, but she bit her lip, too afraid, not wanting to make things weird just because she probably thought a bit too much about his words.
Katie took a breath before speaking, trying to sound lighthearted. “Well, it’s good I’m not sick, so you don’t have to risk your own health.”
“You’d let me know though, right?” He persisted.
“Yeah, I would.” She wanted to add another joke saying she’d need someone to get her medicine, but the mood was not light and funny, the atmosphere suddenly very thick.
“Alright, good.” It seemed like he finally exhaled after getting his answer. “Well, I have to go back to work, I’ll text you when Pete brings the meds.”
“Okay. Thank you,” was all Katie could muster out through her fighting thoughts.
 ~~
 how’s the headache?
completely gone, thanks to your brilliant roommate
heeeey i’m the one who sent him on that quest!
 hahahaha
 i know
 thank you, again
damn, i never thought i’d be saying so many thank yous to niall horan
 can’t say i’m complaining
but on a more serious note, do you like pop quizzes?
hmmm yeah? i think i only did pub quiz like once or twice, but it was fun
 why?
me and a few mates are doing one tomorrow, you should join
how bad is your memory? i can’t go to the pub
 who’s talking about a pub?
 we’re doing it on zoom
 oh
it’s still staring at the screen, but it’s not work and it seems like you need some fun
yeah, i guess i kinda do. thank you, but i don’t want to impose
you won’t, i just invited you
 still…
it’s just a few mates, i promise it’s all good. i actually already told them you’re joining
and they hate being blown off
 oh yeah, no pressure
haha no but seriously, if you don’t want to that’s fine, but i think you’ll enjoy it
okay. thank you. you’ll send me the details?
 of course
 should i prepare anything?
nope, just yourself. and your brilliant mind
we’re switching, someone else preparing questions everytime, so you have to wait your turn
The mention of her becoming a part of their regular quiz made her stomach flutter slightly. She dared having this little hope of actually becoming friends with Niall, or rather maintaining some form of contact, but this was still unexpected. But also very nice to know he kind of wanted that too.
  6th day of quarantine
When Katie’s phone started ringing and she noticed her brother’s face lighting up the screen, she smiled. The last time they had spoken was when she called to give him a piece of mind for calling Niall for her, but she actually loved and appreciated her brother very much. Maybe they weren’t the absolute closest, but they had a good relationship. There was this knowledge deep down that they’d jump through fire for the other, if need be.
“Hiya,” she answered, wrapping up the email she was writing (she might or might not be getting some work done on a Saturday).
“Why is Niall calling me asking about your favourite alcohol?” Josh asked right away, no hello needed. He sounded very curious, loving to pry into her life a bit.
Katie laughed, having received a text from Niall informing her of a package waiting outside her door, which turned out to be three bottles of wine and a note saying quizzes are no fun without booze.
“What can I say, he takes good care of my needs,” she replied, half-jokingly.
“I told him it’s whiskey,” her brother informed, very much knowing she did not like whiskey. The only drink she was able to swallow was whiskey sour, but it was definitely not her favourite.
“Wow, thanks for that, Jojo,” she said, her words dripping with sarcasm.
He whined at the nickname he hated, but had to endure since they were kids.
“He did call bullshit though and asked about wine. So I told him red, naturally.” Just by his tone, she could say he had a shit-eating grin on his face, very proud of himself.
Katie furrowed her brows. All three bottles that were sitting in her fridge currently were white. Either Niall knew her brother well enough to catch the lies, which he probably did after years of friendship, or he somehow knew her.
 “You’re a dick,” she laughed.
“That’s what older brothers are for, Kate. But in a serious matter, I hope you’re not getting too buddy-buddy, I couldn’t stand you two ganging up on me.”
She bit her lip, deciding it was probably best to not mention her plans for tonight. It wasn’t a big deal anyway, Niall was just a nice guy, who was probably feeling sorry for her, because she had no friends here and was sitting alone for days, spending most of her time working.
“Oh we’re gonna be best friends in no time, you should be very scared.”
 ~~
Katie was nervous. In fact, she was nervous about a number of things. First of all, the quiz with Niall’s friends. She didn’t know any of those people and she was scared of making a fool of herself. Secondly, she was about to skype with Niall. He offered to have a little chat before the quiz, so he could introduce the group a little, explain who’s who and all that. But it was going to be the first time she’d truly see him and he, her. Well, through the screen of course, but still.
And now she was worrying she might have gone a little overboard with her look. It was nice to have a reason to dress up in something fancier than leggings and an oversized sweater, to even put some makeup on. But, because it was the first time Niall will see her in quite a bit (especially up close), she made an actual effort. (But she didn’t care about that, she was not wondering whether he’ll even pay attention to her looks, not at all).
When the music she was playing suddenly cut off, replaced with the ringtone of an incoming skype call, her throat instantly dried up. She took a sip of her wine before answering, her laptop screen taken over by Niall’s smiling face, literally brightening it up.
He was wearing a button down, it wasn’t necessarily an elegant one, but still a nice one, his hair looked styled, like he actually took the time to tame it. It seemed like he made sure to look good, like he cared. And it excited her because maybe, just maybe, he wanted to look good for her too. Or maybe he liked someone from his friend group and was dressing up for them.
“I see you’re putting the wine to good use. Did I pick a good one?” he asked, taking a sip of his beer, a proud grin on his face.
Katie smiled, her nerves slightly easing. No matter how much he might have changed and grown, he was still familiar.
“Yes, thank you. Although I am a bit worried what kind of idea you have of me based on the amount of bottles you got me,” she joked, taking another sip.
He let out a booming laugh, one that made something in her flutter. “Nah, there’s just never enough wine,” he shrugged. “Although personally I'm more of a beer guy. But you have over a week more of quarantine, you may need it.”
“I heard you sought some guidance from my brother,” she inquired with a raised brow, sly grin taking over her features.
Niall grunted, covering his face in embarrassment. To her, it was incredibly cute that he went to so much trouble just to get her something she liked. “Did he really sell me out? What an asshole.”
“Yup,” she replied, actually proud of her brother for telling her. “But, surprisingly enough, you didn’t buy red wine. Nor whiskey, thankfully.”
“Yeah, I figured he was lying, I remember how much you both loved teasing each other,” he chuckled just at the memory of many fights and banters. “Apparently, still can’t let the opportunity pass.”
“Oh, never,” she laughed along with him. “Okay, talk to me about your friends. What should I expect?”
“Wait, before we get to that, why do you actually need to quarantine? Were you on some crazy vacations?” he asked the question that’s been on his mind ever since his roommate asked him about it.
“Oh. Well, not really, I was visiting Frankie, that’s my best friend from uni. She lives in Brussels now. I was thinking of cancelling, but we spent most of the time just staying in or being really careful, you know, not taking any unnecessary risks, so I guess the worst part was the flight.” She shrugged, constantly wishing her two best friends weren’t scattered around the world.
“I see,” he nodded in understanding. “Had a good time, then?”
“Oh yeah, very! Haven’t seen her in forever. Really needed that as well. I, um…,” she tucked her hair behind her ear timidly, looking down for a second. “I don’t have many friends here, really. As you might have noticed,” she chuckled nervously.
“Finding it hard to meet people?” he asked with furrowed brows, but didn’t even wait for a response, another question coming to his mind. “Actually, how long have you lived here? I think the last I’d heard, you were in Chicago?”
“Seattle,” she corrected. “Yeah, I left like 7 months ago. I got offered a transfer here and a little promotion, I guess, a chance to prove myself, which was an amazing opportunity. I had to go to San Francisco for 4 weeks of training, before coming here though.” She explained, hoping he wouldn’t dig deeper on the subject, because it was not a conversation she wanted to have with him right now.
“That sounds amazing, congrats,” he said simply and she exhaled in relief.
“Thanks,” she chuckled. “But yeah, so I’ve been here a while, but haven’t really made friends yet.”
“I guess working from home is not really helpful, huh?” he observed.
 “No, it definitely isn’t.”
“Well, I’m always around if you want to hang out. Or go out once this whole pandemic calms down,” he proposed and she smiled appreciatively. “Okay, let’s give you some dirt on my mates, then.”
 ~~
The quiz was actually very fun. Katie hadn’t laughed that much in a bit, it would be a very long time if she hadn’t counted her time in Belgium. She met six of Niall’s friends, two of them were friends from work, plus a girlfriend of one of them, one was a friend from his little soccer team and the last two were friends from uni, who were also a couple. Everyone was incredibly nice, making sure she felt welcomed and included, going as far as explaining most of their inside jokes.
They had this tradition of one question dedicated to each person taking part, so they gave Katie a minute to come up with her own question about herself, since they didn’t know her well enough. She panicked a bit, her mind going blank, so she went with what came to her mind first, which was who she went to prom with, the answers being her ex that she broke up with a week before, her best friend or alone. Surprisingly, no one got it right, not even Niall.
“Did you really go to prom with your ex?” he asked, when they talked right after the quiz. It just so happened that they ended up being the only two left on the call, everyone else disconnecting as soon as they were finished.
“Yup,” she laughed, filling up her wine glass. They were both pretty tipsy already, on their path to drunk. “But we were friendly! You know, we were just going to different unis and stuff, it just wasn’t that serious. And everyone else was already taken!”
“Well, you could have always asked me,” he said, shrugging nonchalantly.
“Are you kidding? You used to tease me about it whenever I saw you my senior year!”
He did, whenever he came home from uni (which was a lot during his first year) and saw her, always asking whether she had a hot date yet.
“Yeah, ‘cause I wanted to take you!” Niall exclaimed.
“What? Now that’s just lies,” she chuckled incredulously.
“Absolutely not, I had a little crush on you.”  Niall’s eyes were focused on his fingers picking at the beer bottle label.
“No, you didn’t,” she shook her head, although her mind went straight back to the question about him in the quiz - who was his first crush. The answer choices were his teacher, his friend’s mum or his friend’s sister. As soon as it was asked, he whined, a blush flushing his cheeks. But when it was announced that the correct answer was his friend’s sister, she was pretty sure his eyes were trained on her, like he wanted to see her reaction. As much as a rational part of her brain didn’t want to misinterpret the whole situation and get false hope, she did wonder if there was a possibility that it might have been her.
“Excuse me, I think I know my feelings better, thank you very much,” he said, pretending to be offended. “I just hid it well. Maybe too well.” Niall added the last part as an afterthought, quietly, but not enough for her to miss it.
Maybe it was the wine, or maybe just Niall’s (virtual) presence that had her feeling brave, like he made her giddily nervous, but also brought a sense of safety and calm. Whatever it was, she was feeling brave enough to say, “funny, I had a crush on you, too. What a cliche, huh?”
He scrunched his brows in confusion. “How so?”
She shrugged, little half-smile on her face. “Liking your brother’s best friend.”
“More cliche than liking your best friend’s little sister?” He inquired, before taking a gulp of beer.
She laughed, her mind a bit too fuzzy to comprehend that they just admitted to liking each other. Once upon a time, at least. “I guess we’re just a pair of walking cliches.” Katie quirked as she hid  her timid smile behind her wine glass.
  10th day of quarantine
Katie was fucked, there was no other way to put it. She was usually so good with planning and thinking ahead, always trying to be prepared, but at the most unfortunate time, it slipped her mind. She forgot her period was coming, or rather she forgot she was running out of tampons. And now she was stuck in her apartment, pondering if the possible fee for violating the quarantine is worth saving her from the massive embarrassment. Even though she was actually too responsible to go out now.
If Niall was a good friend, she wouldn’t have that much of a problem asking him for it. She would have no problem asking him if he was a woman. And she would definitely have less of a problem, if she didn’t like him.
But, no matter what, she had a problem and he was pretty much the only person she could count on to help her right now. So she swallowed her pride, pulled all of her courage and rang Niall, because she felt like, no matter how embarrassing, the situation required a proper call, not a text.
He answered on the second ring. “Hey, everything good? You’re not dying, are ya?” His words were joking, but his voice had a serious undertone, he even sounded a little worried.
“A bit,” she chuckled nervously, “but not because of the obvious. You’re not going to the shop today by any chance?”
“What do you need?” he asked, instead of answering her question.
“Well, this will be awkward, but…” Katie started, but hesitated for a second, biting her lip.
 “Hit me,” he encouraged.
“I got my period and I forgot I have like one tampon left.” Even though she obviously couldn’t see him, she closed her eyes, like her shame burned them, spitting out the words as fast as possible.
“Oh,” he let out a little sound of surprise, clearing his throat right after to mask it. “Alright, just send me which ones you want and I’ll get them.”
 “I hate being a burden.”
“Stop it, you’re not a burden,” he reassured right away. “I was actually going to the shop anyway, need a few things. Just text me, so I don’t forget and add whatever else you want, yeah?”
Niall’s words made her smile, she wasn’t sure if he really was going shopping, or just said it to make her feel better, but she just appreciated his reaction, not making a big deal out of it, just accepting her ask and thinking nothing more of it. She knew a lot of guys who would be so lost hearing that kind of request, but Niall was nothing if not alright. And that was just another great quality of his that she needed to add to the list in her mind that was growing scarily quick.
“Okay, thank you. You’re saving my life, kinda.”
“Mmm, I’m sure we’ll figure out a way for you to pay me back, no worries,” he laughed, before ending the call.
An hour later, Katie got the text to pick up the bag from her door. There was no sign of Niall, as usual, but there was a bag with not only the tampons she asked for, but also with two different types of pads, a bag of chips, frozen pizza, some fresh fruits, four different chocolate bars and cookies n cream ice cream. There was also another note inside.
thought some of those might help make you feel better, N xx
And there he was with the xs again. It was probably just the way he signed everything. Either way, the care package was incredibly thoughtful, so Katie picked up her phone to text him.
was not expecting a package like that. that’s a lot of stuff. but thank you, that’s very sweet
just wasn’t sure what you like. El always ate pretty much sweets only, while Lil loved stuffing herself with salty snacks and fast foods
Elaine and Liliana were his older sisters, Lil was married and with a child on the way, five years older than Niall, while Elaine was just two years older than him. Maybe that was the reason why he had no problem helping her today, having grown up with sisters always made guys act a bit different, or at least that’s what her mum always said.
wasn’t sure about the ice cream flavour though, so played it a bit safe
cookies and creams is a good one
 what’s your favourite?
 pistachio
 okay, noted
Katie couldn’t explain why, but even little comments like that made her heart beat just a tiny bit faster. It wasn’t just because he was attentive to details, but it was like he wanted to know more about her, to soak every piece of information in. And then there were comments like that, the kind that made her think about the future, not just the immediate one right after her quarantine, but the actual future. Will they just stay friendly? Become best friends? Or will one of them be brave enough to make the first step into more? Katie didn’t know if there was more in the cards. When it came to her, it wasn’t just that stupid crush from her youth that came back. The feelings grew and were constantly growing, as she got to know more and more of Niall. But she didn’t know how he was feeling. Maybe there were signs, but she was never that great at reading them. Time will tell if one of them will pluck the courage to take that leap of faith, or if she just misread the situations. A part of her was very anxious about it, but another part was excited. And all of her was hopeful.
  12th day of quarantine
“Catch me up on your life. I feel like the last time I really knew what was happening with you was high school,” Niall inquired, folding his hands to rest his chin on top. He looked adorable like this.
It was a Friday night and they were skyping. Just the two of them, having drinks over video call. As it turns out, they do their pop quiz every other week and so he asked her if she wanted to hang out with him to survive her last days of solitude.
“Oh, you think you knew what was going on in my life back then?” Katie chuckled, a sly grin on her face.
“Well, I was in your house like every other day,” he reasoned.
“Please, even I didn’t know what was happening in my life at that time.” She joked, because, if she was being honest, high school was a mess.
He laughed. “Yeah, okay, point taken. But still, how was uni for you? How did you end up at the company you’re working for now?”
“Uni was fun. Stressful, most of the time, but I have some good memories. And the company was just a fluke,” she shrugged, taking a sip of her wine, the last bottle of the three Niall bought her last week.
“Was it hard leaving Seattle behind?” he asked.
“Um..” she got embarrassed, nibbling on her bottom lip, clearly thinking over her answer. “Yes and no, I guess. I mean… I had a boyfriend,” she admitted, going into the story she didn’t like retelling, but actually didn’t mind that much right now. Not only because she trusted Niall, but because she was over that whole situation, even if it still brought up some unpleasant memories. “We had been together for about two years. And he didn’t want to move here with me. Like, didn’t even consider it. Just outright told me to reject the offer, basically. And most of our friends took his side. I guess they were mostly his friends to begin with, but it still stung. So yeah, it was hard, but there also really wasn’t much left for me there.” When she finished, she shrugged again, hoping to look quite unbothered, as it really was just a thing of the past. Katie took another sip of wine, while Niall looked at her with a look that she couldn’t decipher. But thankfully, it wasn’t pitiful.
“Okay, first, I’m sorry,” he said after a second. “But second, that was such a dick move. I mean, it was a huge opportunity for you and he expected you to just give it up? Like an ultimatum? Not even ‘we can work it out’ or something?” He sounded genuinely surprised, even a little disgusted, which made Katie smile slightly, his reaction making her feel better.
“It was more like ‘if you’re even considering taking it, then fuck you’, so yeah, pretty much,” she said, her words feeling much lighter than before.
“Wow,” Niall chuckled humorlessly. “He really did not know how lucky he was to have you.”
“Stoooop,” she said, her face growing hot.
“No, I’m serious. I’d say good riddance to him.”
“I kinda see it now too, to be honest,” she admitted, a faint smile on her lips. “It did make me realise how he didn’t really love me. Noticed a bunch of not great behaviours, actually. So hey, it’s all for the better.”
 “Oh for sure.”
“What about you? Any tragic love story?” Katie asked, reaching for her glass.
“Umm…” he took a big gulp of his beer, while she raised her brow, indicating it was her time to grill him. “Kinda the opposite of your story, actually,” Niall admitted.
“You’re joking,” she gasped, her eyes growing wider.
“Nope,” he shook his head, a half-smile on his lips. “I followed my girlfriend here. She got a great job, so I came with. It wasn’t far anyway, but yeah, she was the reason. I did say no to a proper job opportunity myself for that, actually. And then she dumped me four months later. Taking most of our mutual friends with her as well.”
Katie was pretty much speechless. She did hear he had a girlfriend, they moved in together here, but she hadn’t heard when it ended and definitely not how. “Wow,” a shaky laugh escaped her lips. “Bad breakup?” she asked after a second.
Niall licked his lips. “Not the worst, I mean, there wasn’t any cheating or anything, although she did get another boyfriend like two weeks later. But it did suck. We got a flat together and everything. I get that you can fall out of love with someone or whatever, but I did rearrange my life for her, so you know, if she was having doubts back then…” He let his voice linger. It’s been a while since he thought about her, even the last time they accidentally crossed paths a few months ago, he hadn’t really felt anything anymore.
“She should have said it,” Katie finished his thought and he nodded.
“Yeah. It felt a little out of the blue. But it’s been over a year now, so I’ve dealt with that. It was the most exciting story about my life, though. Other than that it’s just work, footie, pub quizzes and booze,” he chuckled, taking another gulp of his beer, as to prove his point.
“A boring life is the best kind, though,” she noticed. “I think it’s so underrated. I’d take stability over drama anyday.”
“Yes! Thank you!” Niall got excited, scooting a little closer and even pointing a finger at her through the screen. “That’s what I think too.”
“Great minds think alike,” she laughed, moving her finger between them two.
It was probably the most personal conversation she had ever had with Niall. And it felt good. Maybe not exactly because their stories were good, but because she felt like there was a certain level of understanding. He was such an easy person to talk to, no matter the subject. And this conversation, hearing his story, made her appreciate him even more, especially his character. Being willing to sacrifice himself for love was a big thing. She just hoped that he still had it in him, that the past didn’t make him close his heart off, but by his honesty and vulnerability, she didn’t think that was the case. And that really did make her happy.
They were quiet for a moment, at first just kind of looking at each other with soft eyes, feeling somehow connected, even through a computer screen. But then Katie furrowed her brows before crossing her eyes, which made Niall also pull a face, before they both burst out laughing.
“Well, I didn’t know the friends who took her side, but the ones you have now are pretty great,” she said, closing the subject. “Thanks for inviting me to the quiz last week, it was a lot of fun.”
“Thank you for joining us. And you know you’re already invited to the next one.”
Katie smiled, looking down for a second. When she raised her eyes again, Niall was giving her a weird look, like he couldn’t figure her out.
 “What?” she asked.
He shrugged. “You say thank you too much.”
She chuckled, “well, I was raised right.”
“Yeah, but you don’t have to say it for everything. We’re actually just hoping you won’t blow us off when your quarantine is over,” he said.
“You? Never,” she said, her words making matching grins appear on both their faces.
  1 day after quarantine
To be honest, Katie didn’t know what she was doing. It was the first day of her freedom and she invited Niall for dinner. She was making a dish that was his favourite when they were younger, her mum used to always tell Josh to invite Niall around, when she was cooking it. She wanted to do something nice for him, to repay him for all the help. Another reason might have been the fact that she really wanted to see him. As nice as texting and skype was, she wanted to be face to face with him, hear his voice clearly, not slightly distorted by her laptop speakers. Maybe even touch him.
To say she was nervous would be an understatement. She went crazy yesterday, cleaning the entire flat, then ironing half of her clothes, because she couldn’t decide on one outfit she might want to wear. She eventually settled on a casual black skirt, with a slightly sheer, emerald blouse. Her hair was pinned up a bit messily, while she still hadn’t decided if she’s gonna keep it that way or let it loose, or maybe tie it up… She put some makeup on, but didn’t want to overdo it. It was just a casual dinner with a childhood friend, after all.
Just seconds after she turned off the stove, her doorbell rang. It was like the sound went to her heart instead of her ears, making it beat just a little bit faster, excited about the person waiting outside.
Katie pulled off her apron quickly and went to welcome her guest, finally.
“Hiya,” Niall said as soon as she pulled the door open. He squeezed in next to her, handing her a bottle of wine and taking off his jacket. “Oh my god, do I smell chilli?” he asked, turning to face her as soon as he hung it up.
Katie smiled, just seeing him made her happy, but his words and the excited glint in his eyes made her even happier. “Yeah. I got my mum’s recipe, so hopefully it’ll be at least half as good as hers,” she shrugged innocently, trying to check him out as discreetly as possible.
He looked good, the screen did him no justice and he looked good even then. In the flesh he looked more buff, definitely spent his lockdown working out. His hair looked softer and more fluffy and there was a slight stubble on his face. The simple t-shirt he was wearing clung beautifully to his bicep.
“That recipe is like your family’s best kept secret,” he said, eyes wide.
She laughed. “It’s really not, my mum just didn’t want yours to have it, because she loved you coming over and praising her.”
“Oh and you’re hoping for that same praise, aren’t you?” Niall asked, with a raised brow.
She chuckled again, shrugging her shoulder like she didn’t even know what he was talking about. And then he took a step closer and wrapped her in a hug.
“It’s good to finally see you properly. You look beautiful,” he said so close to her ear, she could feel his breath on her neck, raising goosebumps on its way.
It only took her a second to settle into the hug, her arms around his waist, her face nuzzled into his neck, breathing in the mixture of freshly washed clothes and his cologne. The thing was, Niall was an amazing hugger. She knew it before, but now that he was slightly bigger, he was even better. And he smelt amazing. Katie had to force herself to pull away before it became an awkwardly long embrace.
“You look good as well, it’s nice to actually hang out.”
 “Thanks for inviting me.”
“Thanks for all the help. Come on, I just turned the stove off, so we should eat while it’s hot.”
She gestured for him to go first into the kitchen, creating herself an opportunity to unashamedly look at his ass, which looked pretty good in his dark grey trousers.
Katie had been stressing all day if they’d have something to talk about. They had skyped twice and texted throughout most days, they were about to run out of topics to discuss at some point, right?
Well, apparently not anytime soon. They spent the whole meal talking between bites, Niall pretty much moaning at the first taste of chilli, which made Katie laugh unattractively, covering her mouth in an attempt to keep the food from spilling out. But the conversation just flowed so naturally between them. They actually sat at the table, in front of empty plates for almost an hour, just chatting, before they ran out of wine which eventually prompted them to move. They cleared the plates, opened another bottle of wine, this time the white one Niall had brought, and moved to the sofa.
“Can I ask you something?” Niall asked, waiting a second after they settled, while she was quickly responding to a text from her mum.
“Sure,” she said, putting her phone down and twisting her body towards him, one leg bent on the couch.
He looked down for a second, then licked his lips, before meeting her eyes again carefully. “Is this a date?”
“Well…” She bit her lip. “It was meant as a thank you, but I guess…” She hesitated for a second, but then saw a small flash of light in his eyes, which gave her that little bit of courage she needed. “It could be. If you want it to be.”
“See, that’s a tricky question,” he said with a grin, which made Katie raise her brows in question. “Because yes, I would very much like to be dating you, but it’s also weird not being the one organising the date, especially the first one. I just showed up, while you planned the whole thing.”
She laughed, her heart feeling instantly lighter, looking at him with admiration. “You can always take a lead with the second one.”
 “Deal.”
He brushed the hair that escaped her updo out of her face, putting it behind her ear. Katie was pretty sure he was about to kiss her, but she didn’t want to wait a second longer, his earlier words giving her enough courage to lean in and be the one to initiate the kiss.
He tasted like wine and chilli, probably exactly the same way she did, but somehow the kiss was sweet, their mouths finding their rhythm easily, almost like they were meant to work together.
When they parted, she let out a soft laugh. One of disbelief. And happiness. She just kissed Niall. And now she had a bunch of butterflies fluttering in her stomach.
“What are you laughing about? Was it that terrible?” he asked, his voice a little bit panicked.
“No, god no, it was great,” Katie rushed to assure him, in case he couldn’t tell her emotions by the huge grin on her face. “It’s just… Unexpected. I really did not think we would end up like this.”
“How so?” His arm was holding her hip, as if he was making sure she didn’t pull away.
“I mean… Well, did you ever think we’d be here?” she asked him, not really sure how to explain her thoughts.
“Um… Not really, no. I used to think we’d date at some point, but when we had both gone to uni that hope kinda died,” he admitted.
 “Really?”
“Yeah. Why are ya so surprised?” He chuckled at her reaction.
“I mean…” Katie hesitated for a moment, reaching for his hand to play with the ring on his finger. “Yeah, we apparently had a crush on each other back in the day. And we’ve known each other forever, but we also didn’t know each other that well, not really.”
“Yeah,” Niall sighed in understanding, “it’s this weird feeling of knowing someone for years while also just truly learning about them now. But it’s not necessarily bad though, is it?”
“Not at all, I like learning more about you. Getting closer to you.” She gave him a gentle smile, which he returned right away,
 “That feeling is very mutual.”
“Life just works in a weird way, doesn’t it? We’ve been living pretty close to each other for months without even realising. And we haven’t spoken for over a year, but now it just…”
“Something clicked,” he shrugged, flicking her palm to trace mindless patterns on the back of it.
 “Yeah, it did.”
“Maybe it was meant to be.” His words were so light, but at the same time, they held so much conviction, they made Katie’s heart soar.
“I guess we’ll have to wait and see, huh?” she asked cheekily. “I think it all depends on what you’ll prepare for that second date.”
He chuckled. “Oh wow, well, that chilli is gonna be hard to beat. But I feel like all the shopping I’ve done for you should count for something, you know, like a little advance.”
“Oh great, we haven’t even started dating properly and you’re already slacking. Nice one, Horan.”
Her words made him let out a booming laugh, his head thrown back. And all she could do was look at him and admire the beautiful man beside her, thanking the universe for giving them a chance to find each other.
 ~~
“Do you have a morning shift tomorrow?” Katie asked, when another episode had ended. They talked some more, then kissed some more, before eventually settling down to watch some tv, enjoying the quiet moments of just holding each other, having more than enough words between them that night.
Even the small fact of him choosing a tv show to start watching together instead of a movie made her do a little mental note in her head. Because it was one more thing indicating that he wanted to do this again. If she even had any doubts still.
“Mmmm, no,” he says, rubbing at his eye sleepily. “I’m starting at two in the afternoon.”
Katie learned he had 3 possible work shifts when he texted her at midnight that he’s at the shop and they’ve run out of the cereal she wanted. He was an IT support specialist, which she found very interesting, although she didn’t understand a lot of his explanation when she asked him about his job.
“Do you wanna stay the night?” she asked. When he looked at her surprised, a flush appeared on her cheeks. “Just to watch another episode and go to sleep, I didn’t mean… like..”
“No, yeah, of course, I wouldn’t want to…” he rushed to say.
“Oh, you wouldn’t?” She looked at him with an arched brow, playful smile on her face. “So you’re not into me?”
“What? Shit, no, of course I am, come on, you should know that.” He raised his brows and both their minds went back to a moment when they were kissing earlier (well, some people would probably call it making out) and she felt his hardening dick on her tight.
She bit her lip to sustain a smile, because it was nice to feel that way, to feel wanted, but also for the other person to be open about it, not afraid to admit his feelings towards her. It’s been a while since she felt like that. Sexy, free, confident. A bit vulnerable, but safe.
“Yeah, I guess I do,” she said with a wicked smile, planting a kiss on his lips.
It was crazy how comfortable she felt with him. She didn’t hesitate to cuddle up to his body, didn’t think about going in for a kiss, even despite it being just hours since their first one. With Niall, there were just no doubts, not anymore.
“So sleep or one more episode?” he asked, his arm tucking her closer to him.
“Are you gonna fall asleep halfway through?”
“Nope, I’m pretty awake now, your proposal made me come alive again,” he chuckled, tickling her side, which made her yelp in surprise.
So they watched two more episodes before eventually getting ready to sleep. Katie took pride in being a good host, providing Niall with fresh towels and a toothbrush, before he even got the chance to ask. She also made him take the bathroom first, so she could put the blanket covering her bed and all the extra pillows away. She did a quick scroll through her socials, deliberately avoiding a text from Frankie, asking how the night had gone. She could wait until tomorrow, when Katie would call her for a proper gossip.
“Do you mind if I sleep in just my boxers?” Niall asked, walking out of the bathroom, a towel wrapped securely around his waist, his glistening chest on full display. He had definitely been working out. “I can wear a shirt too, if you want me to.”
Katie shook her head. “Whatever you’re comfortable with, I’m good with whatever,” she said, passing him with a smile to take her turn getting ready to sleep.
She tried to be as quick as possible, removing her makeup and brushing teeth. When she emerged, Niall was tucked in bed, on the left side, which was exactly the one that had always been empty, since she slept on the right.
Her pajamas were simple, consisting of cotton shorts and a simple t-shirt. After all, they still had time for something sexier, you shouldn’t play all your cards right away.
“First date and you already got me into bed,” he said watching her climb under the sheets. “Damn, woman, you’re good.”
There was a huge grin on his face, which made it impossible for her not to mirror his expression.
“You took my side,” she said, fluffing her pillow before lying down. The bedside lamp was the only source of light in the room, which bathed them both in the golden glow. Niall couldn’t tear his eyes away from her, she looked stunning.
“Oh shit, sorry, it actually looked less slept on,” he started explaining, making a move to get up. “We can switch.”
Katie laughed, putting a hand on his shoulder to stop him. “I’m just messing with you, you got it right.”
“Uhhh I hate you,” he whined, burrowing his head in the pillow. For a second he wished he really was on the wrong side, because then the pillow would smell of Katie and not fabric softener.
“Oh but you don’t. I’m pretty sure you said you liked me, actually,” she chuckled, loving the joking atmosphere that felt so natural between them.
“You’re lucky I have a soft spot for you,” he turned his head to look at her again. She moved closer, resting her head on the edge of his pillow, before moving after a second to plant a kiss on his lips.
It was impossible to not feel how his lips stretched into a smile during the kiss. It seemed like they spent the whole night just smiling and kissing. But neither of them were complaining.
With Niall it was all so easy. Sure, at times she might be a bit nervous, especially right before seeing him or talking to him, but once she felt his presence, most of it went away. She felt free. He had seen her do so much stupid shit over the years, she just knew he wouldn’t judge or be put off. It was just that level of comfort and familiarity, that was what he brought her. And she didn’t understand how, but at the same time he made her feel giddy and excited. It was like he calmed her and made her heart beat faster at the same time. It was against her logic, but she decided not to question it. Because there was no question to her that it was a good thing. She liked that feeling. She craved that feeling.
It was crazy how unexpectedly things could happen. Two weeks ago she didn’t even want to call him, not wanting to bother him, any relationship between them vanished over more than a year ago. And now she wanted to keep in contact with him as much as possible. She wanted to talk to him everyday. Somehow, over such a short time, he became a constant part of her day, whether it was sharing memes, random thoughts or having actual deep conversations. She never even thought she’d be here, falling for someone so fast. Least of all, falling for Josh’s best friend. But that was a funny thing about life and love, it crept up on you when you least expected it. And sometimes, it did so in simply the best way.
The pandemic was a horrific thing that affected countless people’s lives, but in a surprising twist of events, it gave Katie a light in such a dark time. And that light went by the name of none other than Niall Horan.

The Lost Boys Having a Crush on the Reader Headcanons:
Tumblr media
David:
° When David’s interest is peaked by someone in a romantic sense, he’s surely unable to look away from them. So be prepared to catch him in the act of staring at you more often than you had previously noticed. When you make eye contact, he
° He’s not a stranger in the department of having the capability to come up to you and strike up a conversation. No, he’s more than capable of doing that. Only, he much prefers to hang back and wait for you to come to him. He wants to know that you’re interested in him as well, he sort of plays hard to get.
° But once a conversation is struck, he’s a true flirt, albeit subtly to begin with, which creates wonder around whether or not he actually is. It makes him simper wildly at you, some of his comments going straight over your head. However, once you do pick up on the fact that he’s interested, and you reciprocate those feelings in return, he’s a shameless flirt all round!
° It’s a common occurrence for David to thus offer your rides on the back of his bike. He even allows Star to begin riding with either the likes of Paul or Marko. When you accept, it’s a humongous ego boost!
° David is both protective and possessive, bordering heavily on the verge of territorial. So don’t be surprised if potential threats are either scared off or wound up being found washed up on the shore. You’re his. He’s made up his mind and there’s no room for anyone else.
° As stated above, in David’s eyes you’re already his, so in his opinion, you might as well get comfy for the ride because you’ll be his for forever. He’s not like Paul, he’s either in all the way or not.
° When David is experiencing a crush, he’s certainly attempting to win you over heavily. So he spends a lot of the time complimenting you. It’s a very direct way for him to communicate that he’s interested in you. He only enjoys it all the more if you become flustered in response.
° If you knew him very well, you’d completely comprehend why the boys look at him gobsmacked when he’s less snarky with you, in conjunction to being happier with you around. They guys surely thank you profusely for that!
° David is an all in or none at all kind of man. If he’s interested romantically in someone then he’s going to be giving you all of his attention. He expects nothing short of the same in return, so don’t be surprised when he sulks slightly when you laughed at Paul’s dumb joke for thirty minutes straight.
° Although he loves his boys, he also is a man and needs his alone time. So, during his alone time, he enjoys spending that time with you. It’s one of the rare moments where he allows a slightly softer side to come forward. It’s a chance for him to get to know you more intimately, and not just in a sexual manner.
° When you’re in the hotel, David situates you on his lap, especially when the other boys are around. Again, it’s an ego boost, but it’s also a direct way of telling them to back off and you’re his. Not that they’d try anything anyway.
° When you’re doing your own thing on the BoardWalk, expect this suave vampire to run his eyes up and down your figure because damn! He scored lucky. You catch him every time and the guy winks at you.
° The majority of the time he’s quite literally eye fucking you. This is especially the case in public or around the boys. He knows that he’s doing it, but do you complain? Hell no!
° Again, he even winks when you catch him red handed. He’s not shy about it, even if it makes you feel embarrassed. David enjoys watching you squirm underneath his smoldering gaze.
° He’s definitely the type of guy to catch you off guard because your momentary fear boosts his pride in himself. He laughs at how you jumped at his presence.
° Unbelievably to the other boys, he actually shares his cigarettes with you, which is a first! The last time Paul tried to pinch one he got a swift kick up his backside for it.
° David never stops smirking around you when he likes you! It’s physically impossible for him not to.
° He also teases you relentlessly, especially when it results in you becoming abashed.
Tumblr media
Dwayne:
° To begin with, it’s challenging to tell whether Dwayne likes you or not because he’s already so quiet. You genuinely assume that he hates you or something which causes you to avoid him a lot as he’s quite intimidating.
° But nevertheless, he finds himself staring at you a lot more. You catch his eye immediately with little effort and peak his intrigue.
° You also just so happen to catch him in the act of staring at you. It’s a process that tends to fluster the pair of you, your eyes meeting for a flicker of a second before finding something else to focus on, as though both of your lives depended upon it!
° This sort of thing happens for a couple of months as it takes a lot of courage for Dwayne to be able to talk to you. He also doesn’t trust people as easily as Paul does, which can make him come across as unapproachable and intimidating, but underneath he can be really chill and gentle if you get to know him.
° Whilst all of this is happening, the other boy’s are busting his balls for being such a pansy about it all, which gives him the courage and edge of defiance to actually go up to you and introduce himself. The whole ordeal leaves you a stuttering mess, which he finds utterly adorable!
° And to the surprise of the other boys, he speaks to you a lot more frequently and in quantity than with most people, - including them -. It’s quite bizarre for them to witness, leaving them wondering what you’ve spiked him with! News flash, boys, it’s nothing.
° Dwayne definitely finds a way to emotionally connect with you on some basis. He doesn’t outwardly say that he likes you, but his actions tend to speak louder than his minimal words.
° With that noted, he’ll probably buy (or steal) small things or snacks because they’re your favorite or the small item reminded him of you or you said you really wanted. It’s genuinely the kindest gesture you’ve experienced in your life and it wins you over. He’s spontaneous with his gift giving and very casual about the whole experience. He does stumble over his words a little when he tries to explain why he got it for you. But nevertheless, it’s very sweet!
° It doesn’t matter if you’re not dating Dwayne yet, he likes you which means that he’s already beginning to care about you as a person. This leads to him giving you his jacket on colder nights because let’s face it, this raven haired boy is really an angel sent from heaven! It doesn’t matter that he’s shirtless, he insists every time.
° To your amazement, he will make flirty comments to you, which puts you into a state of shock for a few seconds. He usually does this whenever the boys aren’t floating about, their beady eyes scoping out the scene makes him awfully antsy, and not in a good context.
° Dwayne compliments you so much, but in a respectful fashion because Dwayne drinks respect women juice™! And you can fight me on that one.
° He also buys you food, particularly your favorite icecream. It’s kind of a gesture of, “Hey, let me take care of you!”. Argh I love him so much!
° When you’re walking on the BoardWalk side by side, your hands do brush up against one another, yet it’s not until you’re on a ride that you’re scared to be on does he actually grab hold of your hand. It’s his way of letting you know that he’s never going to let anything happen to you when he’s around. It’s so fucking cute!
° It’s a very rare occurrence to see this boy smile, but when you’re around, he just can’t help himself! Paul and Marko think it’s hilarious and always comment on it.
° Dwayne laughs at all of your jokes, even the ones that aren’t particularly funny. He thinks they’re funny though, which is a plus!
° He drives you places at night if you need to go anywhere. He doesn’t think that it’s a hassle at all, he sincerely enjoys spending time with you.
° If it’s not already apparent yet, Dwayne becomes very protective of you because when he cares about someone, he’s willing to keep them safe.
° He will stand up for you whenever anyone is giving you shit. He usually tends to back away from violence or anything heated, but when it comes to you, he’s willing to defend you by tooth and nail.
Tumblr media
Paul:
° Be prepared for extreme flirting and teasing! When it comes to Paul having a crush on you, he isn’t going to hold back. He’s going to pull out all the stops.
° When Paul likes someone, he’s inclined to speak far more often. Can you believe that’s even possible? Well, it is! And it’s practically on the verge of blabbering, but you find it adorable, nonetheless.
° Due to the fact that he talks nonstop around you, it’s almost a given that he becomes tongue tied at some point. It makes you laugh softly at him because you’ve never seen someone so happy to be around you before until you met Paul. It was a little overwhelming to begin with, but now you’re so used to it.
° It’s incredibly obvious that Paul likes you, even you can tell. He’s also up front about the entire ordeal by flat out telling you honestly that he likes you. He’s not shy and that’s a known fact by now.
° Though to begin with you thought he was joking, but it turns out he really wasn’t!
° Paul is the most shameless flirt out of all of the boy’s, which leads to him winking at you so often that you swear your heart implodes in your chest. He’s a huge fan of how embarrassed you get when he does it also. He can’t help but  laugh in response.
° Dirty innuendos as well as cheesy pick up lines are a given. This man spits them out like fire! And he’s not even worried if they don’t land well because he’ll just bounce back in with another one, and another one...
° Out of all of the boy’s, he’s the most welcoming and warm one. So, he’s not a stranger when it comes to physical contact. He encourages it whenever he’s with you. He hugs you a lot and will place his hands on you more, - not in a particular fashion that is sexual, especially if you’re not into that -. It’s his way of letting you know that he’s interested, it bridges the gap between you two, reminding you that he’s there and very much so interested in you.
° He wants to be around you all the time, honestly. Marko calls him a nerd because of it, but Paul just puts his buddy into a playful choke hold and calls it a night. Nah, Paul’s not embarrassed that other people know that he likes you, in fact, in his eyes it only makes it clearer that other people should back off. They really don’t stand much of a chance against him.
° Paul is a funny guy, so it’s just common knowledge that he’s going to make you laugh very hard on a constant basis. You pretty much have permanent abs now. Nothing is better to him than the sound of your laugh and the sight of your smile. When you break out those two things, Paul is putty in your hands! He prides himself on his ability to make you beam like the sun and laugh so hard that you’re crying. And that’s not even an understatement.
° He always has an arm wrapped around your shoulders. Again, it’s about contact. He tries not to do it without your permission if you’re not a fan of physical touch, but he just can’t seem to help himself. He gravitates towards you like you’re his personal sun.
° One specific way to know that Paul is really crushing on someone is when he feels comfortable enough to share his favorite music and bands with you. He’s a big fan of rock and metal, wanting to share it with you comes naturally to him. He’d be stoked if you enjoyed the same music as him, but he won’t slander your taste in music if it’s different. He may not like it, but he’s certainly not going to force you to listen to something you’re not fixated strongly on. I mean, after all, he’s quite a chill guy.
° We also know that Paul is quite an emotional guy beneath all the hair and the dirty clothes. If he likes you, you automatically mean something to him, which means he’s protective of you. He won’t stand for anyone making fun of you, trying to put you down or anything negative regarding you. He’s stomping out that fire before it can burn you. And you better not be surprised when people wind up dead afterwards. No one messes with you. Period.
° Funnily enough, he also shares his weed with you (if you smoke that is. If not then that’s all swell too!). Yeah he’ll share some with the boy’s, but if he’s smoking a joint he won’t ever let them have a puff. He goes halfsies with you, the sight is astounding alone!
° Paul gives you piggy back rides whenever you desire. Sometimes he doesn’t even ask you!
° He lets you borrow his jacket whenever you want and tells you how good you look in it as well. Great, now there’s less work for him to make other competition back off!
° If Paul likes you he’s going to speak to you about his interests and will actually listen to you too, even if you have great knockers that he can’t stop ogling at!
° He will include you in everything that he does because he likes you that much and wants you to be included. Excluding others makes him feel bummed out, especially when it comes to you. He wants you to feel comfortable around him and the boys and as though you matter because you do!
° It’s not a question of whether you want him to or not, but Paul will just pull you into his lap when he’s sitting down.
° He’s also kind of sweet because he’ll hold your hand when you walk with him, especially when the BoardWalk is packed that night, as not to lose you in the crowd. Like, any excuse to touch you he’s game for because he really likes skinship. He’s just so excited when you’re around him, he can’t help himself!
° He’s the type of guy where when he sees you come onto the BoardWalk that night, his eyes light up!
Tumblr media
Marko:
° I’m not quite sure how this is even physically possible, but Marko will smile even more when you’re around. He just feels like you’re his personal sun and you have the ability to pull him out of the darkest of moods and into a much lighter one.
° Paul has quite the habit of teasing Marko about it, which just results in Paul getting thrown into the ocean 900% of the time. And you bet your ass that Paul is surprised each time it happens.
° It’s incredibly sweet when it occurs, but Marko’s eyes have a habit of lighting up like torches when he sees you. It’s genuinely the most adorable thing that anyone has ever seen. This especially happens when you first appear on the BoardWalk at the beginning of the night, and honestly, it occurs every night.
° Marko will flirt like a champ with you because he is the king of flirting! You thought Paul was good at getting the attention of girls? Meet Marko, the one with the ability to gain your attention with just one of his big goofy grins. And you can bet your ass that he makes your heart flutter intensely.
° One thing most people aren’t aware of how much Marko loves animals, after all, he’s befriended every pigeon and rat back at the Cave. So if you make an appearance in the hotel, it’s expected that he’ll show you his scruffy pets and he’ll allow you to feed them with him.
° The boys steer clear of all taunting then, because Marko isn’t afraid to beat their asses if they fuck this up. It’s happened before. But let’s be honest, Paul interrupts 9/10 times because he wants his buddies attention. You find that adorable.
° Physical touch with other people that aren’t his brothers is incredibly rare from Marko. This is due to his lack of ability to trust others. Marko is the most guarded individual in the group, being a strong contender with Dwayne and David. But with you, he finds himself hugging you more often. It’s an odd sight for the boys to see at first, which only feeds their suspicions that Marko indeed does have feelings for you.
° But nevertheless, the other boys particularly enjoy seeing Marko happy, so there is little room for complaints here.
° When Marko has brought back grub for the night, he’s more than happy to share his own food with you, which is a strong indicator that he trusts and cares for you. He happily sits back and allows you to stick your fork in his takeout box of rice. He’s totally relaxed about it.
° Now when Paul attempted to do the same thing, Marko almost bit his hand straight off. It’s fair to say that Paul was left traumatized.
° Speaking of food, Marko will allow you to go on food runs with him for the boys. This is due to the simple fact that he enjoys your company, and also slightly because he knows that if he leaves you at the hotel with the boys, they’re 110% more likely to tell you a bunch of embarrassing stuff he’s done in the past. He’d rather spare himself the mortification, thank you very much!
° He’ll also get your favorite takeout whenever you’re at the Cave too, regardless of whether the other boys hate it or not. Even when the boys bitch about it, he’ll just grin and say something cheesy like, “The guests choice.” lmaoo what a nerd!
° Marko is also very talented when it comes to winning things at the arcade or the game stalls on the BoardWalk. He’s never been a stranger when it came to winning that adorable plushie you had been eyeing up for the past hour and a half. And he’s even more delighted when you carry it around the BoardWalk afterwards with an enormous grin plastered on your face. It genuinely just melts his heart!
° Marko is quite the independent man, which just amplifies his guarded nature. It’s scarce for him to ever ask for the opinions of others, yet he finds himself always asking for yours. Your opinion is one that he truly values because he enjoys hearing your thoughts and opinions. To him you’re equal and if you show him respect, he gives that back without hesitation.
° Catch Marko genuinely listening to you when you talk. To him, it doesn’t matter about the subject at hand, just the sound of your voice encapsulates him in utter focus. It’s especially so when you’re discussing something that you’re interested in or passionate about.
° Anyone can figure out that Marko has a crush on someone when he listens to their problems and provides solid advice in response, but only if you’ve asked for it. Although Marko would love to just waste anyone who upsets you, he knows you wouldn’t be a huge fan of that. Instead, he opts on listening to your issues and providing comfort where possible. This deepens your emotional connection, and overtime makes it easier for him to open up to you in response.
° Just insert fucking heart eyes everywhere by this point! Marko can’t get enough of you. It’s a wonder that you haven’t picked up that he likes you, but then again, the boy is a tricky one to read so it’s challenging for you to comprehend whether his actions are motivated from a platonic perspective or a romantic one.
° Marko’s most prized possession is his jacket, and he never parts with it, even during the mad heatwaves that constantly occur in Santa Carla. However, he’s managed to shed his jacket a few times when it comes to you. He’ll plant the article of clothing over top of your shoulders, particularly when you’re shivering in colder weather.
° Don’t make a big deal out of it though! It just embarrasses him and he becomes a gushing mess. Besides, he likes the way it looks on you, as well as warding off any potential competition. After all, Marko is a possessive man!
° Expect to be complimented loads of times during the night. He manages to do it such a nonchalant way you tend not to notice it, but he’s always gratuitous when you accept it and return a compliment. This also strengthens your bond, making it a rather positive one and helping him to unwind and relax around you.
° I headcanon that Marko is quite perceptive and observant. So it’s a common occurrence for him to notice new things about you like a new haircut/color/style, clothes, jewelry, etc. and he compliments you on them/it. He wants you to feel good and confident around him, as well as letting you know that his focus is primarily on you and no one else.
° Much like Dwayne, he will tend to get you small things and gifts that consist of your favorite candy, etc. which emanates the fact that he’s thinking about you. It’s a sweet small gesture that you never fail to thank him profusely for. But Marko just waves it off like it’s just the casual thing that he does for everyone, only he doesn’t and you know this.
° Marko will tend to whisper rather flirtatious comments in your ear, especially when he is behind you. This happens a lot whilst you’re waiting in lines for rides or for food. He can’t help but grin silly when you start to grow flustered over his words.
° His nimble fingers will also brush the hair out of your face as he speaks to you. It’s a bold move considering how guarded he is, but he wants to see your breathtaking countenance when he’s speaking to you. The action usually makes you get abashed, which he honestly loves deeply.
° With Marko there’s going to be lot’s of eye contact incorporated with a ton of smiles! The entire ordeal makes you swoon for him, and he’s more than aware of this.
° He’s developed a habit of looking at your lips a lot when he's talking to you. He also checks you out fifty times in an hour. He’s not even abashed when you catch him! He just grins that much wider at you, because in his eyes, he can’t help it.
° Out of all of the boys, I believe he’d be the most nervous to tell you his feelings in fear of being rejected. But also, it’s foreign for him to let a new person in behind his walls, so there’s a lot of nervousness swirling in his heart and brain about it. You’re probably going to have to be the first one to admit it, which he’ll gladly follow suit in.

UNDERWING CHALLENGE DAY ELEVEN Q & A (×)
From @tiredlittleoldme: Day 11 Underwing Challenge: At what time of the day do you usually write? In the mornings or at night?
Hi, Agnes! I hope you’re well!
I write at night. I don’t know why. Even if I have a lot of free time during the day, I just do something else. Or sleep. Truth be told, my body clock is a mess.
Tumblr media
From @drippingmoon: Hello:) Day 11 question: How does Sky change Winter's relation to her nightmares? What does fundamentally change? Does he have insomnia/nightmares?
Hey, J! I hope you’re well.
I mentioned this in the (outdated) introduction of Don’t Fall Asleep that Winter stops having her nightmares after falling asleep on Sky. And rather than feel happy or relieved it only made her wonder. Sky doesn’t have insomnia or have nightmares as terrifying as Winter’s. But, there’s something else. *wink*
Tumblr media
From @dragon-with-a-pen: Hello!! For day 11 of the underwing challenge, what made you decide you wanted to be a writer? And what keeps you motivated to write?
Hi, Em! I hope you’re well!
There were things I wanted to read from the fandom fan fictions. But I couldn’t wait for another writer to write of all the things I thought of. So, I started writing them myself. And eventually, I started writing with my OCs. I kind of miss writing fan fictions now. Hahaha.
Wanting to finish all my WIPs keeps me motivated. I have a lot of ‘em you know. And my brain keeps on making another one, Hahaha.
Tumblr media
From @dontcrywrite: hi aye!! I hope you had a good day :)) here's my question for day 11: What’s your favorite character arc to write in Don’t Fall Asleep? (Go into as little or as much detail as you want)
Hi, Kat! I hope you’re well.
My favorite character arc would be Dylan’s. It’s pretty typical…I guess. Nothing y’all haven’t written/read before. But relevant to the entire story. Let’s just say the rest of the cast should be grateful he exists. And I love him. AFSDAFKDJK
Tumblr media
Thank you for the asks for Day 11! All my answers are pretty short. And thank you for reading! Have a great day/night!

Good Intentions - B.B (3)
Tumblr media
Summary: What if everyone knew except the two of you? Accepting it might be the hardest thing of all though. (Reader/Biker!Bucky Barnes)
Prompt: Biker AU! + @polaroid-idiocity ‘s biker!bucky and mechanic!reader request.
A/N: this is for @sgtbucketbarnes ‘s writing challenge.
Here's the thing though, as much as you try to make a difference in life -- there is always something darker that might take its place, a truth that people can't or even refuse to answer. It had happened to Bucky once or maybe twice in life, and they were choices that he had to live with.
"The girl or your life, Jones. If that's even your real name."
Jones --serious and blue-eyed-- looks at Rumlow with his gun straight between his eyes. The girls are scared and huddled in the corner as the fire gets closer and closer to them. Brown eyes flicker to meet Jones' blue ones, but before anything can be done by the two -- there is a pop and crack It leads to Jones falling over as he hears Rumlow laugh.
"You should've left when I told you," a female voice remarks from behind and Jones can only curse before blacking out completely.
Maybe, this is what Bucky gets for placing his emotions on the line.
You wake up half an hour later to the sound of more active beeping coming from the heart monitor and the sight of Bucky --or was it better to call him James?-- talking with the nurse. The man had always been a charmer and even now you could tell that the nurse seemed to like the attention he was giving her and for some reason -like she was the one coming in this past week to watch over him-- that sent a chill down your spine. So, without another word, you get up and the noise of the chair scraping over the linoleum floor is enough to grab their attention.
However, you don't address either of them as you get your phone out of your pocket and try to call someone, anyone to help you with what comes after this.
The nurse blinks before letting an awkward laugh, clearly thinking she had gotten caught, as her eyes turn from looking at Bucky to the door then back than him. However, Bucky is only staring at the door with an almost pained expression.
"Your girlfriend is a sweet thing," the nurse exclaims as she goes back to making sure that everything is in order, "She's been here every day, checking up on you."
"I see," is Bucky manages to say before the nurse leaves the room.
Unsure of what to do next, Bucky just sits there and takes in the room. He had tried to after waking up, but the nurse and doctor had quickly come in afterwards to check up on him --they probably knew who he was connected to-- and though there were still major wounds that needed healing he was in relatively good health after waking up.
He takes in that there are a duffel bag and a smaller purse where you were sitting with papers and notebooks stewed about. Bucky can't help but wonder what you've been doing since the last he had seen you, since before he went underground. There had been so much time lost and choices made, though Bucky didn't regret anything -- it was all for the better good.
But the nurse was right, you had been here the whole time and Bucky wasn't sure exactly how to feel about that or even what to say when you came back.
"He woke up," you exclaim on the phone near the bathroom, "What am I supposed to do?"
"I'll call the Captain," Steve remarks and you're all but confused over his statement, "Everything will get sorted out soon."
"That's great and all," you sigh out, "But, what am I supposed to do, Steve?"
"Talk to him," Steve replies like it's the easiest thing in the world like you haven't ignored each other for years, "Get to know who he is now."
He hangs up, forgetting that the only present Bucky you now is a potential drug maker and future convicted felon.
It takes you longer than it should get back to his room as you end up wasting time by walking up and down corridors and fighting with yourself over what you wanted to snack on from the cafeteria two floors down. You aren't delaying the inevitable, but at the same time, you are.
What if this had all been a mistake? What if he didn't want to see you, much less interact with now? Who was Bucky Barnes now anyways?
There were so many questions looming in your head and after getting even more snacks from the vending machine down the hall, you end up in the same place all over again -- Room 301A. The light is streaming down beneath the door and you take a deep breath and open the door with arms full of candy and junk food -- at least they can help to keep your mouth shut when need be.
However, you don't expect electricity to strike you when blue eyes meet yours, to be frozen still by a simple glance and a hitch of breath. It's then you realize that sleeping Bucky looks completely different from awake Bucky and the years add more to that realization. There are crinkles and lines over his eyes with a bit of grey on the short beard he has managed to grow. There's a seriousness to him that you aren't used to because Bucky you knew was always smiles and laughs and this one was looked as if he was trying to analyzing you.
Though you were sure, it looked like you were doing the same.
"Glad you see you're awake," you admit because you had been dreading that he was never going to since you got that 3am call, "How are you feeling?"
"Like I got run over by a burnin' bus," he groans and sits up as you move the chair a bit closer to his bed and take a seat, "How have you been, jellybean?"
You freeze for a second at the familiar nickname and notice that he is looking at the all-too-familiar bag that is strayed about among all the rest of the candies. You can't help but let out a laugh at the memory from that one Halloween -- fighting for said candies and Almond Joys until you were too sick to move.
"Not stressing' now that you're awake, idiot," you let out with a shrug, hoping that your voice doesn't crack at the end as Bucky gives you a weary smile, "I got a call from Steve saying that a Cap should be heading soon."
His jaw tightens and he nods, "That's good to know."
This was a lot easier than you thought it would be, but maybe it came with pretending that he was still someone you knew and that your time with him was limited -- that soon he might be taken away and locked up and you would likely never see him again. Maybe, you were living a fool's dream or just too damn naive, but you wanted to spend time with Bucky --whatever version was in front of you now-- as much as possible.
"Kit Kat? Mars Bars?" you asks while raising some bags to his eyesight and thus so he can stop staring at you. He leans in and ends up taking a Mr.Good Bar instead, which causes you to give him a questioning glance because you don't remember him liking it in the past -- however, you let it go for now.
"So, what do ya do?" he asks while ripping the bag and popping a piece of chocolate into his perfect mouth. You try to ignore it and move forward with the questioning, only slightly worried about whether a hospital patient should be indulging in candy or not.
"I work as a mechanical engineer at Stark Industries," you explain while taking another piece of candy into your mouth as blue eyes widen and Bucky whistles in surprise.
"Damn, that's pretty impressive," he answers back and for a second you're between asking the same question and dropping it altogether. Yes, the years have passed you by, but what good was bringing them all up in the end when you were sure he was going to just leave all over again -- it was better to live in the moment, no?
(A much younger Bucky had told you to always live in the present, after watching a bit too much Top Gun.)
"Is that what you're workin' on?" Bucky asks, dragging you out of thoughts and perpetual frown, as you turn to look at what he is pointing at -- the folded blueprint underneath a novel to you were slowly making your way through since last month and some balled up post-it notes.
"Yup," you nod and look at him. Blue eyes gleaming with excitement, "Do you wanna see it?"
"Really?" Bucky perks up considerably as you nod, "Nothing top secret, right?"
"Not at all," you answer back in an obvious lie but at the thought of that Bucky who spent too much time with the robotics team and could score the winning goal for the team and ace that dreaded maths test all in one Friday -- and well, you didn't mind getting Tony mad a little later.
"Sure!" Bucky grin, as you get up and grab the paper only to unfold it on his lap. And at that moment with his bright blue eyes glow in excitement underneath the low lighting of the room -- you knew he understands what you were trying to tinker with.
Bucky always understood, even when you didn't want to talk. He could tell how you felt in second even when you were hiding behind books and tinkering in his dad's garage. So, why couldn't he ever tell that you were--
"And what's this for?" his voice brings you back out of your thoughts, like it always had, as his patched up fingers point to a certain corner of the design.
"Well, that's---"
And it's almost like old times, as Bucky finds himself sneaking glances at your smile as you explain things and you lean a bit more into his shoulder than you really should. The night passes on like that until you fall asleep on the chair unsure of what will happen to Bucky once morning arrives.

Light Everything Inside of You
or Catherine Parr is a fantastic teacher, even when someone is ashamed to admit they need help.
Since the first days of rehearsal, Catherine Parr had very quickly noticed that Jane Seymour was far from well read.
It’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it is something that she observed. The way Jane stumbled over dialogue every once in a while, the way her hand shakes when she’s asked to note something in her script.
It’s subtle, but it’s there.
Parr doesn’t say anything about it, not for a long time. So long, in fact, that an entire European tour happens before she brings it up, having actually forgot about it during the travel time.
But when they land back in England, after so many months abroad, Parr once again sees Jane’s hand shaking nervously as they all sit together, with history professors from several prominent universities around England about their stories. Told the right way.
The professors, in addition to spoken accounts, had requested short, written anecdotes. Parr and Katherine are the first to finish, then Boleyn, then Aragon and Cleves, leaving only Jane.
Parr watches Jane carefully - her hand trembles, her letters shaky and half-complete, and there’s a noticeable crease in her forehead, and suddenly all Catherine can see is that same expression from the rehearsal room all those months ago.
That night, when she hears Jane quietly wandering around downstairs in the dead of the morning hours, she asks about it.
“Hey,” she says lamely, entering the kitchen.
“Hey, Cathy,” Jane answers. “What are you doing up?”
“I could ask you the same thing.”
Jane shrugs, continuing cleaning all of the mugs that had been left in the sink. “I don’t sleep, remember?”
Parr chuckles. “I guess we have that one in common, sister.”
There’s a lull of silence, then Jane speaks again. “Did you need something, love?”
“I just…” Parr fiddles with her sweater. “I noticed something… and I don’t know what to do about it.”
Jane sets down the mug she was cleaning and looks to Parr, confusion evident across her face. “What’s up?”
“Today, during the meeting,” Parr notices Jane’s tiny flinch at the reminder, “I saw... I saw you struggling, Jane, and I was just wondering what was up.”
Jane’s complexion goes redder than the ceramic in the sink. “Just a hard story to tell,” she lies. “Nothing more.”
“You can’t lie to me,” Parr says evenly. “There’s more, Jane.” She softens her tone. “And you can tell me about it, if you want to.”
Jane stares at Parr for a long time, scanning every feature for any sign of dishonesty or malice if she were to tell what was really troubling her. Finally, she sighs, setting down the towel in her hands and leaning against the countertop.
“I…” she pauses, running a hand through her slightly tangled hair. “I was never the most literate woman,” she says quietly yet honestly, looking at the tile of the counter and avoiding Parr’s eyes at all cost. “I barely learned how to read and write. I guess… it’s still pretty hard sometimes.”
Parr is quiet for a long time, and Jane immediately fears that she spoke too much. Parr, intelligent and prose-weaving Parr, would see her for the stupid and uneducated woman she was.
“Jane,” Parr finally says, voice soft, “why didn’t you talk to me about it earlier?”
Jane gives a half-strangled, bitter laugh. “Because I’m supposed to come out and tell the first woman to ever publish a book in England that I have the reading ability of an teenager, if that?”
“You should have told your sister that something was troubling you,” Parr says, keeping her voice low and gentle. “And I would have helped. I will still help,” she amends hastily.
“You will?” Jane asks, incredulous.
“Of course I will,” Parr says. “We can start now.”
And that’s how, if you really cared to know, Catherine Parr and Jane Seymour find themselves holed up in Parr’s study whenever they can’t sleep, which is more frequently than both involved care to admit, reading short stories and other texts under the honey-drenched glow of Parr’s desk lamp. They conduct these secret meetings in secret, in the dead of the night, working in near silence as to not wake any of the other queens.
They start slow, very slow, with just some of Parr’s own works. Jane reads aloud, very quietly, liliting prose and warm poetry until words start to make more sense and sentences start to fall effortlessly.
Then comes the hard part - writing.
But Parr is a wonderful English tutor, Jane comes to find, and they once again start easy. She copies, word for word, short passages from books, nonfiction and fantasy and science fiction all beginning to blend together as she writes them all in one marble composition book Parr found in a desk drawer.
Parr soon begins to challenge her, pushing her harder in both the reading and writing. She’s forced to read Shakespearean monologues aloud and copy passages from the likes of Hugo and Dickens.
And after long days of performances and looking after Katherine and the others, it’s more than enough to make Jane begin to tear up as she tries to read Macbeth. She stumbles over word after word, feeling Parr’s critical eye on her, Argyle curled in her lap watching her fail too.
Just as Parr is about to take pity on the woman and let her stop, there’s a knock on the door. “Mum?”
It’s Katherine. The fact she’s knocking on Parr’s study door seeking Jane can only mean one thing - she had a night terror. Jane immediately swipes her sleeve over her cheeks several times to hide her tears and opens the door. There’s Katherine, looking concerned but overall just fine.
“Kat? What are you doing up?”
Katherine shrugs. “I heard your voice.” She narrows her eyes as she sees the faint smudges of mascara around Jane’s eyelids. “Are you alright, mum?”
Jane gives a hoarse laugh. “Just fine, love, head back to bed.”
Shaking her head, Katherine all but forces her way into the room. She gasps as she sees the copious amount of books and half-filled pages of writing littering the room. “What have you two been doing?”
Jane very nearly bursts into tears again, not wanting to admit what they had been working on, but she wouldn’t lie to Katherine. “Cathy was teaching me…” she swallows the lump in her throat, “teaching me how to read and write better. I didn’t learn much in the past life.”
Katherine is silent for many moments, and it breaks Jane’s heart. She was probably ashamed to have a stupid, uneducated mother-
“I want to help.”
Jane blinks. “What?”
“I want to help,” Katherine repeats fiercely. “Parr taught me some stuff too, and I want to help you learn, mum.”
Unable to form words, Jane sits back on the bed. Argyle leaps from Parr’s lap, crossing over and rubbing his head against her arm to call for attention. She looks at Katherine as she begins to scratch Argyle behind his ears. “That means a lot to me, love.”
Katherine beams, then grabs one of the books off the bed and starts reading it with Jane, and it almost amazes Parr how much Jane’s spirits lift. She listens carefully as they read together, noticing the specific wordings that trip Jane up and making notes of them. It is as if Jane’s confidence had increased tenfold, which she is very glad to see.
Over the course of the following week, Katherine would join their tutoring sessions, listening to Jane read and watching her write until she would fall asleep in Jane’s arms. Jane would tuck her into Parr’s bed, always fetching her bear from the other room if Katherine didn’t bring it, and make sure she kept her voice soft so the girl would sleep.
“I think we should call it a night, Jane,” Parr interrupts one night, startling Jane from the lyrics she is composing. “We have two shows today.” She notices Jane’s dejected look at her notebook. “And whatever you’re working on, I’m sure it can wait until you have a few hour’s rest.”
“Pot calling the kettle black there, sister,” Jane chuckles. She looks to Katherine, curled up in the bed and looking so young and peaceful. She brushes a few stray hairs away from the girl’s face and trails her fingertip in a line down her cheek. “I’m writing her a song. A lullaby, more like.” Suddenly Jane snaps out of her reverie and looks at Parr. “I couldn’t have done it without your help, Cathy,” she says, nearly timidly.
Parr gives a warm smile. “You’ve made amazing progress, Jane,” she says honestly. “And I’m so happy you came forward to talk to me about this.”
Jane gives Katherine a gentle kiss on her forehead, careful not to wake her, then crosses the room to wrap Parr the latter in the biggest hug she had ever received. “Thank you,” is all she can mumble into Parr’s shoulder, voice laden with tears. “I love you, Cathy.”
Parr holds her just as tight, kissing her cheek gently. “You’re welcome, Jane.” She pauses for just a moment. “I love you too, ma sœur.”
She feels Jane chuckle against her, so she continues. “Next, I’ll teach you French.”
“I’m holding you to that,” Jane mumbles, and Parr can nearly hear the excited smile in her words.

Y.M.C.A
Summary: Hoping to bust a sex trafficking case at The Bop House: Roller Club, you and your best friends need to go undercover. In the process, you and Bucky decide to push Steve’s buttons.  Pairing: None romantically, Platonic Stucky x Reader Warning(s): Cursing. Mentions of sex trafficking but nothing descriptive. Pretty G rated. Friend fluff.  Word Count: 1,850 Beta Reader: Thanks to my darling honeybuns, @supersoldiersruined-me and @bumbercrotch for beta rendering.  Notes: This is my entry to @thatfanficstuff‘s 1.5K writing challenge. My prompt was “Why is everyone singing?”. Congrats Kat on hosting! So happy for your milestone!
“Alright gang, new lead on that sex trafficking case.” Tony’s standing at the head of a conference room, plowing through a mountain of various briefing slides.
“Why are you talking like we’re in an episode of Scooby Doo? Alright gang,” you mock. “Next you’ll be saying jinkies.”
You and the rest of the team have been stuck in the conference room long past your lunch time. Needless to say, patience for Tony’s lecturing is wearing thin. He squints at you before returning back to the slides.
“As I was saying… intel has informed us Markus Livingston is planning to attend some big event at one of their satellite hideouts. We’ve been after this guy for months, but he never seems to show his face.”
“Probably afraid you’ll lecture him for hours.” You high five Bucky for the quip.
“Does anyone wanna take this seriously?” Tony asks.
Nat continues analyzing her split ends. Sam is playing a game on his phone. You swear Steve is asleep with his eyes open. Your suspicions are confirmed with Bucky knocks his knee into Steve startling him awake.
“Seriously, Cap!?” Tony pinches the bridge of his nose.
“I was listening Tony. I swear!”
“Tony, next time please schedule the mission briefing before all the boring housekeeping tasks. An email would have sufficed for the first three hours of this meeting,” Nat chimes in.
“None of you read your damn emails!”
“Exactly!” Bucky whispers to you. Tony either doesn’t hear him or chooses to continue regardless.
“Markus Livingston, who kidnaps and traffics children into sex slavery, which apparently is not important to you all…” Everyone shuffles and sits at attention, reminded of the seriousness of the crime. “Thank you. He’s planning to attend some big event at one of their satellite hideouts; a place by the name of The Bop House: Roller Club.”
“A roller rink? How retro,” Sam tuts; no longer engrossed in his phone game.
“Who’s assigned?” Nat asks.
“Yourself, Agent Y/N, Sam, and the Centurions. Wanda, Clint, Bruce and Vision are still wrapping up that job in Cambodia and it’s my day off with Pepper.” He finishes with the most fake smile you’ve seen on him.
Steve’s posture shifts, deciding it's time to play Captain. “Covers?”
“Provided.” Tony slides packets across the table. You skim the mission briefing but are interrupted by a snort from Sam. Flipping a couple pages to the assigned covers you see why. The theme of the event is “Skating Through the Ages.”
“What the ever-living hell is Skating Through the Ages?”
“Roller Skating. Dressed as various historical clichés.” You all stare up at Tony in disbelief. “Ya know, hippies, poodle skirts, 80’s glam, 90’s grunge?”
You no longer have any curiosity why Tony chose to sit out this particular mission. Anything that didn’t allow him to be himself or Iron Man was a hard pass in his book.
“It’s another couples cover,” Sam groans. You continue to read. Looks like Sam and Natasha are posing as a couple along with you and… the space is left blank. You raise your eyebrows a bit in surprise.
“Tony, who’s my partner?”
“Me.” Steve and Bucky answer in unison. You raise a single eyebrow and swivel your chair back to Tony hoping for some help.
“Don’t look at me, Y/N. Let those two figure it out.” You swivel back to your two best friends who are now engaged in a heated whisper argument.
“Buck, come on. You vowed never to do couple covers. In fact, you threw a massive hissy fit the last time Stark tried to assign you one”
“That’s not true, Steven. I have no qualms with the couples cover.”
“I’m the Captain.”
“Now he pulls the Captain Card!”
You look back and forth at the boys. “If you both wanna be a couple so bad, you can always go together?”
They both look at you reclining back in your chair coolly; faces both a vibrant shade of pink. You had no idea what had gotten into the both of them.
“I flipped a coin in my head-” both men stare at Tony waiting for the verdict. “-and realized I don't care.” With that, Tony closes the presentation and exits the conference room.
“Looks like we got a throuple!” Sam cracks.
**************************************************************************************************
Arriving at the rink you’re an excited ball of energy next to a glum accompanying crowd.
“Am I the only one excited about this?”
Sam huffs before responding, “I look like a knock-off Hendrix with my ginger Janis Joplin. So, forgive me I’m not jumping for joy.”
“Excuse me! I did not spend three hours doing my hair for that comparison.” You had to give Nat credit. Despite Sam’s comparison she looked nothing like Joplin; more like a sultry redhead Farrah Fawcett.
Bucky and Steve flank each of your sides pouting. They’re dressed like fifties greasers complete with slicked back hair, white t-shirts, and black leather jackets. You had to admit, it was a good look for the both of them.
“I get Sam and Nat being huffy, but I can’t deal with you guys moping too.”
“Sorry Y/N/N, I feel naked without my suit.”
“Poor golden boy doesn’t like being on the other side?” Bucky taunts. He was reveling Steve’s discomfort.
“Hush you two. If we’re gonna be a successful throuple we need to be madly in love and not bickering assholes.” You feel the eyerolls before you see them but promptly smack both of them in the temple. “I’m serious.”
**************************************************************************************************
A handful of hours have passed at the roller rink. Nat and Sam have cozied up to some of the henchman near Livingston trying to figure out if he was gonna show tonight. You and the boys were on recon around the rink hoping to find out more about where they were hiding the children.
The three of you had already scoped out the arcade area and bar. You now skate leisurely around the rink, hand-in-hand with Bucky and Steve. You’d been friends with them long enough the couple act was comfortable. To any onlooker, you would look like a blissful throuple; but you knew better. The boy’s eyes were in mission mode; constantly on a swivel observing the comings and goings, checking patterns, looking for abnormalities.
They had both surprised you with their natural ability skating. Perhaps you shouldn’t have been shocked; it seemed the serum added an unnatural grace and a quickness to learn new tasks you’ve grown fond of. You approach the curve of the rink, preparing to make the turn with your chain of three. Right skate crosses gracefully over left. It’s a sudden mix of limbs and skates. Somehow the three of you manage not to topple into a heap as Steve skids to a halt dragging both you and Bucky along.
“Livingston in the building. Our two. Nat. Sam. Nine o’clock,” he whispers into the communication device.
“Move you, star spangled ass!” Steve’s eyebrows raise at your blatant insubordination once you detangle your skates. Best friends or not, Steve demands a certain level of respect on missions.
“If we’re the only people on the rink not skating, glaring at a mob boss, it may draw some unnecessary attention.” Your voice is firm and annoyed, but your body language says nothing but caring partner. Bucky catches on.
“Yeah, darling Steven. Tripped over your skate there and almost took us down.” Steve is not amused, but knows your both right.
“Okay, sweethearts.” His voice still clearly displaying his desire to tackle Livingston. “Let’s finish this lap and go sit down. I think I twisted my ankle.”
The three of you remake your hand holding chain, Steve now in the middle feigning a hurt ankle, and skate towards the exit on the far side of the rink. Under his breath, Steve is whispering orders to Nat and Sam hopefully directing the capture of Livingston.
Your progress off the rink is slowed by Steve’s fake injury. The three of you make it halfway when the song changes.
Young man, there’s no need to feel down
I said, young man, pick yourself off the ground
I said, young man, ‘cause you’re in a new town
There’s no need to be unhappy
Nearly everyone on the rink has stopped to dance in place, further slowing your passage. You drag your right skate behind you to slow your pace. Bucky does the same.
“Why are we slowing down!” Steve grumbles.
“In case you haven’t noticed, Captain, everyone else has stopped. I don’t feel like crushing small civilians under my super soldier body while we’re under cover.”
Young man, there’s a place you can go
I said, young man, where you’re short and your dough
You can stay there, and I’m sure you will find
Many ways to have a good time
“Sam! Nat!” Steve’s whisper yelling into the com as best he can over the music. “Move on Livingston. We’re stuck on the rink… Sam!? Nat?!”
It’s fun to stay at the Y.M.C.A.
It’s fun to stay at the Y.M.C.A.
Steve looks around the rink in frustrated horror. Bucky is insanely calm, basking in the destruction of Steve’s type A, leadership. Out of the corner of your eye, you catch a flash of red. It’s Nat bringing down Markus Livingston while Sam stealthy covers his mouth with duct tape as to not make a scene. With the mission at completion you decide to enjoy the roller rink while you can.
They have everything for young men to enjoy
You can hang out with all the boys
You shimmy your shoulders, rolling your hips to the beat intentionally knocking into both Bucky and Steve. Bucky seems to have also noticed Nat’s takedown despite the radio silence. He joins you in dancing around Steve. Clearly, he’s never heard the song before as all his moves are off beat.
It’s fun to stay at the Y.M.C.A.
“Why is everyone singing!?” Steve yells. He’s livid with the two of you. You throw your arms up to form the letters; singing in his face.
It’s fun to stay at the Y.M.C.A.
“Would you two focus!” he bellows. His face is tomato red; eyebrows firmly knitted together. You can tell he’s either preparing a massive lecture or he’s gonna blow cover and storm over to handle Livingston himself.
“Captain, sir. Permission to speak?” Bucky’s still dancing to the song in front of Steve. You wonder if perhaps the two of you have gone too far in taunting him. Steve looks ready to land a punch right to the brunette’s face; cover or not. Steve ignores him.
“Permission to continue dancing as Natasha and Sam detained Livingston about sixty seconds ago?” Steve’s features settle into befuddlement.
“Yeah… good catch, Cap.” You bump your hip against his playfully, hoping he’ll let loose and drop his stoic Captain mask. His brows unknit and a smirk curls onto his lips.
“Sometimes I hate you two.” His words are harsh but his tone indicates otherwise. “Now teach me this god forsaken dance.”

To give the fans what they want, they record and post their first video featuring Adrien, with Alya helping behind the camera. As Marinette's fans love Adrien, what will come of the videos on her channel? Author's Note: Things are starting to pick up! The Moment You’ve Been Waiting For...
---
Marinette...you know Adrien Agreste?? OMG
I can't believe you go to school with Adrien Agreste the model!! You HAVE to make a video with him!
I love the Agreste fashion lines! Adrien seems so sweet!
While I'm still confused Paris has actual supervillains and superheroes, I LOVE Adrien! I want to see him in a video!
You guys would be so cute together. Pleaseeee do a video. Give the fans what they want.
It was all Marinette's comment section was talking about. Adrien had never really been in a video of hers before, as most of her second channel videos were filmed in her room, or only with Alya in public. Marinette should not have been as shocked as she was about her fans freaking out about Adrien being her friend and in a video, but she didn't think it would get to the point where it was all people talked about.
Her Twitter feed was full of people talking about the recent video and how they wanted Marinette to do a video with Adrien. Instagram comments were all about Adrien, how she needed to post more pictures of her and her friends. People wondered about Adrien and his father, as they are typically private people, they wanted to see more about Adrien from the short, funny video.
It was Friday, and they had school off that day. So, naturally, Marinette called Adrien to ask if he had seen anything about the video. It only went up yesterday, so it was possible he had no idea. "Hey, Marinette! Just the person I was going to talk to!" Adrien answered.
She giggled. "Have you seen the video?"
"Of course I have! And all the comments on everything, wow," He awed. "Your fans are something."
"They seem to like you," She commented. "Do you want to join me for a video? I think it would satisfy everyone," She asked him.
"I would be honored. When do you want to get together?"
Marinette thought for a moment when she pulled out her schedule. "Alya and I have a scheduled time tomorrow for a recording, so she would be able to help us with it. If you're available tomorrow, I mean."
She could hear Adrien smile. "The sooner the better, right? I'm free all day tomorrow- father  tomorrow is out of town and Nathalie convinced him to let me keep the day off," Adrien answered.
"Great! Alya will be at my house at ten tomorrow, so see you around then?"
"You know it!"
---
Alya stood behind the camera and pointed to Marinette. "Okay, ready whenever you are," She said, making sure the lighting was good, the battery would not die, and it stayed in focus.
"You're sure it's not a problem that we speak in English?" Marinette asked Adrien for the third time before the video started.
Adrien shook his head. "Yes, I'm sure. All of us know English, we're good. Remember, I was homeschooled most of my life and had nothing better to do with my time?" He reminded Marinette. "I know multiple languages and English is not a problem."
"Alright." Marinette looked to Adrien and back to the camera. Taking a deep breath, she started the video. "Hi, guys! I'm Marinette!" She smiled. "And today I'm here with my friend Adrien! He was in my video over the debate if Ladybug or Chat Noir is better, and the number of people who wanted to see him in a video was insane. So, we did it."
Adrien smiled and waved. "Hi! I'm so excited. I can't believe you guys wanted this so badly."
"I can. You're a world-famous model, Adrien!" Marinette laughed. "It's no wonder people were surprised we know each other."
Adrien shrugged. "My dad is the famous one...I'm just your typical guy!"
Marinette nodded slowly. "Riiiight," She exaggerated.
"Hey Marinette, how come Adrien's never been in a video before? You trying to keep his gorgeous face hidden from the world?" Alya joked from behind the camera.
If Marinette we're still fifteen, she would have flipped out about Alya mentioning his gorgeous face. But the fact that they're all eighteen, she's learned to contain herself, mostly, around her crush. "Well, I try to keep my one channel separate from my personal life...and normally the second channel revolves around you and me. So again, keeping things separate from my life?" Marinette shrugged.
"That's a lie. It's because I'm always so busy, I barely have any free time. You'd think my schedule would have lightened up as I grew older, but no, it just meant more things for me to do. I blame no one but my schedule for never appearing on the channel," Adrien laughed. "Maybe we should start the video now?"
"Well, we're going to do a design competition. I found these," Marinette held up some booklets made for kids with pre-sketched models and stencils for clothing in the books. "And we are going to duel it out using the books. Stencils can be used, but extra points for no stencils. Now, it wouldn't be a challenge without a time limit. So, we have fifteen minutes to complete our design! Sound good, Adrien?" Marinette asked as she finished the rules.
"Sounds like you're going to kick my butt, but I'm ready," He concluded.
Marinette nodded with a smile. "Alya, what is the theme we are designing for?"
"Spring. Create a spring themed outfit, male or female, appropriate to wear in rain or shine. Professional, but ready for the warm weather," Alya read off the paper. Neither Adrien or Marinette knew the theme prior, and Marinette's mind was already bouncing from idea to idea. Alya held up a timer as she stood behind Marinette and Adrien and smiled as she saw both contestants get ready. "You have fifteen minutes...starting now!" Alya announced and they started to get to work when the stopwatch beeped.
Adrien stared at the paper for about a minute before his pencil even touched the paper, while Marinette was already working on a full design. Adrien kept looking up at Alya for help, resulting in laughter coming from behind the camera. "You are literally the son of a famous fashion designer...how are you not able to do this? You have fifteen minutes," Alya reminded him.
The fifteen minutes flew by quickly and Adrien only shook his head at his design when Alya asked the two of them how it went. "Well, let's take a lot at our results! Since Adrien is so confident in his design, let's see Marinette's first," Alya smirked.
Marinette held up her sketchbook to show a male model. He was wearing a business-casual outfit, but it was written off to the side what colors would be used. The suit was white and there was a light green tie with it, and black pants. The spring colors were tied in around the outfit, including the green tie and suspenders, as well as yellow lines on the white shirt. "I would have colored it if we had more time," Marinette said. "But really, it could be so much better."
"I would love to see how you make it better, that could be very awesome," Adrien complimented. "Mine is crap," Adrien said and showed his sketchbook. "I could not come up with anything, so I drew based on Ladybug? I don't know. Ladybugs are spring insects. So that is why there is a ladybug pattern. Plus, she's a fantastic hero," Adrien smiled.
Alya and Marinette looked to each other and burst out laughing. "Adrien," Marinette started, "I'm sure Ladybug will appreciate the compliment, but you should really stick to your day job as a model. Designing does not seem like it is your strong suit."
Adrien put his hands over his eyes and tried to keep himself from laughing. "Next time we do a video, can we not do anything around designing? I would much rather prefer showcasing literally anything else."
A big smile grew on Alya's face. "Yes! I have the best idea for a video for the two of you! For the other channel, no designing!" She said. "Marinette, finish the video so we can get working on the next one!"
"Everyone's a director these days," Marinette rolled her eyes. "Thank you guys so much for watching! Make sure to follow Adrien, Alya, and me with the links in the description to keep up on all our shenanigains, and I will see you in the next video. Bye!" Marinette said, and the video faded out. As Marinette turned off the camera, Adrien looked between the two girls.
"What's the other video idea?"

Y/N had been standing there for the past ten minutes, pacing back and forth. She had been standing in front of the apartment door contemplating whether to knock or leave, but the longer she stood outside, the more nervous she felt. She had reached out her hands a couple times to knock but was quick to retract it as the thought of seeing him again puts a heavy feeling in her heart and a lump in her throat. She didn’t want to see him, but she knew she needed to.
After much more time, she finally gathered up the courage to knock, so she did. Once, twice, thrice. She heard a muffled ‘In a minute!’ from behind the door, the sound of his voice made her heart pound even more.
He was just out of the shower and was currently dressing himself. He placed the towel on his head before ruffling his hair with it, in an attempt to dry it. His left hand was still focused on drying his hair when he decided to swing the door open with his right. He froze.
“Hi.” Y/N stood there before him. She didn’t know what to say, let alone what to do, so that was all that could come out of her mouth.
To say that he was surprised was an understatement. She was the last person he’d expect to see at eight in the morning on a Saturday.
He tried his best to keep his composure calm before responding, “Y/N.” His tone was flat and short. “What do you want?” It sounded harsh, but fitting.
“Can I come in?”
He hesitated for a split second before deciding to open the door wider for her to enter and shutting it behind her. Y/N glanced over at the place, noticing how much it changed and how it was definitely messier than it used to be.
“What do you want, Y/N?” Harrison asked again with a sigh, running his hands through his hair before taking a seat on the couch.
“I came to talk.” She responded, walking over towards the couch before settling herself on it, minding a small distance between them.
He scoffed and turned to her, “It’s been two years, Y/N. Why now?”
“I-I’m sorry.”
“For what, Y/N?” He sighed once more.
“For… Everything.”
“So, it was all a lie, yeah?”
“No, H. I-”
He cut her off and snapped as all the pain from that night came crashing in, “No, Y/N, you don’t get to make excuses now.”
It was the day of their two-year anniversary and he had everything planned for the day. He’d plan to take her to dinner and propose to her. He came back early that day, expecting to see her there all dressed up and ready for dinner.
“I’m home!” He said with a huge grin on his face, which then falters as he sees her there on the couch with her suitcase.
“Wha- Y/N? What’s going on?” A confused expression took over his face.
“Haz, we need to talk.” She said as she stood from the couch.
“Babe, what’s going on?”
“I- I have to go, Haz.”
“Where?”
She swallowed, “I- I can’t tell you. I’m sorry, H.” She took the handle of her suitcase in her hand before dragging it across the room. She stopped right by the door and turned to him.
“I love you, Haz. But I’m sorry.” Those were the last words she said to him before she left the apartment and boarded her flight.
He stood there, by the door, frozen. What the hell just happened? Did he just get his heart broken by her? Who he was so sure was the one?
She let out a sigh, “Look, I came here to make amends with you and clearly, you’re not interested. So, I’m just gonna go.” She said as she stood up from the couch and started to make her way towards the door.
He caught her hand in his, “No, wait. I’m sorry. It’s just..” He stood up and paused for a short moment before continuing, “I loved you. And you just… left.”
“I’m sorry, H. I really am. But I had to leave that night.”
“Why, Y/N?” He looked at her, as if looking for the answer on her face. “We were fine. No, we were more than fine. Everything was great. What happened, Y/N?” She shook her head, she couldn’t tell him just yet.
“That night, the night you left. We had plans, remember?” He looked at his hands, which were still holding her wrist, before continuing, “I wanted to propose to you that night.”
Her heart stopped at his words, her mouth felt dry. “Wha- What?”
“I know you’re the one I wanted forever with.”
“You were too, H. But I just can’t.” She shook her head again whilst pulling her wrist out of his grasp.
“You fell out of love, didn’t you?”
“No, Haz. I never stopped loving you.”
“Then why? Why’d you leave?”
“I- I’m sorry.” She turned away from him and started to walk towards the door. He caught her hand in his once more and stopped her from walking any closer to the door.
“Dammit, Y/N. Stop walking away from me.” He said frustratedly. She turned to face him, now the tears falling out of her eyes.
“I can’t, H. I just can’t.” She said shaking her head. “I can’t let you g-“ He cut her off by kissing her, and was taken aback when she kissed him back.
He pulled away, “I’m sorry. I probably shouldn’t have done that. I just missed you. So much.”
“Goodbye, Harrison.” She pulled her hand out of his grasp and walked out the door, leaving him standing there, where he stood the last time she left. He felt paralyzed once more.
She slid her back down the wall right next to the apartment door, now her tears flowing out uncontrollably. Seeing him again brought back all the feelings she once had and still has for him. And seeing him again made her realize that she wasn’t ready to let him go.
And she didn’t have the heart to tell him that she’s running out of time.
She was crying when she boarded the plane. She had gone for a checkup a few months prior and her results came three days after it. She had to pretend like everything was fine when it wasn’t. And then she just couldn’t pretend any longer, so she booked a flight back home, as she figured it would be best to leave him before it all goes badly.
Her heart broke upon seeing that hurt look she saw on him when she said goodbye and she couldn’t shake the image of it out of her head. She felt bad for leaving so abruptly. But the doctor advised her to get her treatments for the tumor as soon as possible. So, she thought that it might be best for her to do it back home, away from him. She wanted to keep it all from him. She couldn’t stand the thought of him having to deal with her withering away each day.
And that was why she had to go.

QUESTIONS - please answer in character
What is your biggest regret? If you went back in time, would you change it if you could?
If I could go back in time and change anything I wouldn’t. As tempting as that is I doubt I could or would be the man I am today without all those hardships and decisions. Every decisions you make in you life has some sort of impact on the person you grow to become. There’s a lot I would be tempted to change, that’s for certain, but it would be selfish of me to do so because it could fundamentally change who I am now, and I am a good person. At least, I try to be. Is this a corny answer? Yeah, it’s a corny answer.
Are there any guilty pleasures in your life? Please share, this is a safe space!
This is going to sound crazy because it’s a Beatles song, how can anything from The Beatles be regarded as a guilty pleasure. Well, when you have a song that was widely regarded as one of their worse songs then you can see. The song I am referencing is You Know My Name (Look Up The Number). This song is just funny and is my go to for when I need a little bit of cheering up and a laugh.
What is your favorite television show and why?
That would be Grey’s Anatomy. I have been watching it for years, and still continue to do so. I love other shows like Project Runway, Ru Paul’s Drag Race, and what not, but there’s just something about Grey’s Anatomy that has stuck with me for all these years. Even with everything that has happened and the character changes I still find myself coming back to this show time and time again.
Biography
There was a honeymoon period, the back and forth, the happiness for Kurt was almost short lived and every insecurity he had going into it started to build back up. They were young, too young, and they hadn’t even tried being in a relationship again to make sure it still worked. He knew he wanted it to, but the insecurities ran rampant in the back of his head. He could, and he did, push them to the back of his head, plastered on a fake smile, and pretended to be one hundred percent happy, because Blaine seemed to be. Plus, he figured given time that they would go away.
He knew a big reason for it all could be because his schedule still wasn’t a light one. He was still in school when they got married, doing well, and still working at the diner so he could make sure that he had food and a roof, especially since at that point in time he was living alone in New York. So he blamed everything he was feeling on the fact that he was still extraordinarily busy. And when he graduated from NYADA, well, he got to be around Blaine more and that part of his fear still itself for a while, and he was happy. But he likes working, likes being busy, that’s who he is. It’s always been who he is, he’s a Hummel, and he is used to working for everything he has. He likes working for what he has.
Straight out of NYADA he was going to audition after audition, not getting picked which made him increasingly discouraged and extremely hurt. However, he used that and put on a brave face and just surged ahead. The increasingly fake smile plastered smile on his face becoming more and more noticeable for anyone that knew him. He wasn’t truly happy, he felt incredibly discouraged, and it was just harder and harder to feel the need to get up and continue on. But he did, each day, got up and persevered even though the world continuously kicked him in the ass. But as Sonheim said in Follies, “I’m Still Here” and he was. He was determined to make his presence known.
However, then came the time when he realized he missed working with Isabelle, but he knew that he couldn’t just accept an unpaid internship all over again. He already did that and wasn’t about to go through that again, as much as he loved it. He needed the money and did not want to keep working at the diner. So, with his tail between his legs, he went and talked with her. His condition for rejoining was to design something that wows her. Well, that was definitely a challenge, one that he was looking forward to.
It took him a few days, closer to a week and a half, but he was sure he had designed and made something that would wow Isabelle. Bringing it to her, however, was nerve wracking. In the end though, he was right, she was wowed. They talked for a while, a pretty good while, while she critiqued his design and he nervously pulled on his fingers, but his eyes alight with excitement as they spoke. An hour later they were talking and negotiating pay and about twenty minutes later he was walking out of there as her paid assistant, making enough that he was comfortable quitting his job at the diner. And you bet that was the first thing that Kurt did. He made his way home, grabbed his work uniform, and went to the diner. He walked in with a small smile, walked up to the counter, and placed his uniform on the counter with the words “Tell Ronny that I quit” and left, decidedly not looking back as he walked out.
He is now still a busy bee, working hard and often. However, he stopped going to auditions, instead he is attempting to write a part. You can only hear the same thing time and time again before it wounds you. He knows he should go back to auditioning but he just can’t bring himself to pull himself up from that slump of failure that he is feeling after being rejected so many times. Besides, he figured that he could take this opportunity of licking his wounds to write his own musical. Something his dad has said nagging in the back of his mind as he works. His long hours at Vogue.com however to make it hard to give him time to write. So when he’s not working there he’s either writing or designing, and maybe, just maybe, he finds himself designing more than writing. He’s pouring a hundred and ten percent of his effort and time into work related stuff more than he does for his personal life, and he feels almost as if this is having an effect on his marriage, but he also feels like it’s nothing new and he’s not sure how to fix that. He’s almost feels unsure of everything nowadays and it’s not an easy feeling to have.

Say You Won't Let Go
Drawing her bare legs up beneath her, Katarina leaned against the rail and stared down at the deceptively peaceful water lapping at the sides of the boat. She didn't know what Imogen was thinking, hosting another party on her parents yacht so soon after Kyle's death. It just felt wrong. It also felt like they were asking for trouble. 'I shouldn't have come,' Katarina thought, her fingers absentmindedly toying with the frayed hem of her denim shorts. She'd been on the verge of declining the invitation when Imogen mentioned that Parker was going to be off duty and able to come have fun for once. Like some love sick school girl, Katarina had quickly accepted. It had been a mistake. Parker hadn't spoken more than two words to her and she couldn't shake the guilt or unease for attending a party that felt very much like the one where Kyle had died.
“Hey.”
At the sound of Parker's voice, Katarina drew her gaze from the water. Her traitorous heart sped up, fueled by a love sick adrenaline rush. “Hey,” she echoed. The fingers plucking at the fraying on her shorts picked up speed, tangling in the white threads. She didn't know how to react to his sudden attention. The last time they had been alone together she had made a fool of herself by flirting with him and asking him for coffee. He'd quickly shot her down, citing work as the reason. It had been a plausible excuse, one that didn't completely put her off since he'd followed it by suggesting they exchange numbers. Not that he ever contacted her. Which made her coming to the party because he was going to be there even more pathetic.
“Why are you looking at me like that?”
The question caught Katarina off guard. Her brows drew together, confusion clouded her eyes. “Like what?”
“Like you're confused about why I'm talking to you.” He nudged her foot with his own, a playful grin stretching across his full, kissable lips. Full, kissable lips? It took every ounce of Katarina's will power not to gag. Since when was she that girl? The one who noticed things like how kissable a guy's lips were? Looks had never factored into what attracted her to a guy. Her ex-boyfriend Gary had been cute enough, in a Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory sort of way, but it had been his quirky sense of humor that drew her in. Ironically enough, it was that same quirky humor that pushed her away. Well, that and the fact that he'd made her first and only sexual experience awful. There had been no foreplay, no loving kisses. Just Gary lubing up with some KY and sticking it in. His reasoning had been the first time was going to suck no matter what so why not just get it over with so they could get to the good stuff. He hadn't thought about how painful it would be for her or how she might not appreciate his little jokes about needing practice. 'Why are you thinking about that loser,' she silently scolded herself. She knew the answer. It was Parker and his kissable lips.
“I'm not confused,” Katarina lied. Everything about Parker confused her. His hot and cold demeanor. The way he made her feel. It would be easier if she was the sort of girl who could just point blank ask a guy how he felt, what his intentions were. She didn't have that sort of bravery in her. Jumping in to save Kyle and then trying to get justice for Ned had been anomalies, she didn't usually have that much courage.
“Good because most girls don't understand about my no flirting while on the clock rule.” He dropped down next to her, his muscular thigh pressing against her slimmer one. “It probably seems silly, but I'm the youngest and the newest...a lot of the older officers are just waiting for me to screw up.” Parker glanced at her, his grin widening, “you should know...not flirting with you has been the hardest thing I've done in a while.”
“Really?” Her heart skipped a beat before accelerating to triple time when he nodded. Katarina chewed her lower lip and then let out a sigh. “Parker, I'm really not very understanding. I mean, I am. I totally get why you don't flirt while you're on the clock. I just...I didn't realize you were serious about that and...” she shrugged, her cheeks flushing.
“And you thought I wasn't interested.” She nodded. “Kat, if I wasn't interested I wouldn't have given you my phone number or asked for yours.”
Katarina felt her cheeks flush even more. “I thought you were being polite. Besides...you never text or called me. What was I supposed to think?”
“You could have text me,” Parker pointed out. “That's why I gave you my number. Plus, I've been busy.” He glanced around before lowering his voice. “I talked to Ned after you came into the station the other day. He wasn't acting like himself and he was definitely favoring his left side...like he'd hurt himself or-”
“Or been stabbed,” Katarina finished breathlessly. The fact that Parker had taken her seriously when she'd burst into the station announcing that Ned had been stabbed to death, only for Ned to walk out of the Chief's office very much alive, was huge. Parker had no reason to trust her, she wouldn't have blamed him for writing her off as crazy after that incident, but he'd taken her at her word and looked into it. “Parker, I-”
“Guys,” Imogen cried, dancing towards them, “it's a party!” She grabbed Katarina by the hand, pulling her to her feet. “Dance with me! You too Parker!”
“I don't dance,” Katarina protested, glancing over her shoulder at Parker. He smiled and then shrugged before moving his body in time to the music. 'Of course he's a good dancer,' she thought, trying to coordinate her body with the rhythm of the song. It was one she recognized and had occasionally danced to in the privacy of her dorm room. Who didn't dance when Kesha came on?
“This place about to blow-oh-oh-oh,” Imogen sang, shaking her hair out of her face and shrieking with laughter. It was a relief to see something other than sadness on the other girl's face. The memory of Kyle was hovering just beneath the surface, it was written in her eyes, but she wasn't going to let it define how she lived. “Come on, Kat! Sing it with me!”
Katarina shook her head. “Hard pass.” The only thing worse than her dancing was her singing. Her freshmen roommate had dragged her to a charity Karoke event and basically forced her on to the stage, where she was promptly booed off before she could reach the chorus of Miley Cyrus' Party In The USA.
“Dance with me?” Parker pulled her close as the music transitioned into a slow ballad. Heart pounding, Katarina raised her arms and looped them around Parker's neck. Beneath his light gray t shirt she could feel his heart thumping triple time. She closed her eyes, trying to concentrate on the lyrics of the song instead of how amazing it felt to have Parker's hands resting on her hips. I met you in the dark, you lit me up. You made me feel as though I was enough. We danced the night away... “There's just something about you,” he murmured against her ear. Her eyes fluttered open, their gazes locking. She felt her breathing starting to accelerate when his head dipped just slightly. “Kat...” The way he whispered her name sent tingles throughout her body. It was unlike anything she'd ever felt. She closed her eyes, her breathe hitching when his lips brushed across hers. It was innocent enough, just a whisper of flesh against flesh, yet there was something hot and demanding as well...a promise of more. “Kat,” he whispered again. His left hand slid up the side of her body, stirring awareness, before sliding into her wavy dark hair. His fingers rest just below her ear, his thumb gently rubbing across her cheek bone as their breathes mingled. He used his other arm to pull her closer, sealing the gap between their bodies. It felt right, the way each curve and valley fit together perfectly.
“Ahem.”
Katarina jumped back, her cheeks blazing with color as she turned to face Imogen. There was a curious mixture of amusement and jealousy in her friend's golden brown eyes. “I hate to break things  up, but my mom called. We have to dock the boat,” Imogen sulked. “Apparently Daddy is pushing for new restrictions about drinking on the lake and it wouldn't look good for his daughter to be throwing a party...especially so soon after an alcohol involved drowning.” Tears brimmed her lashes. “Did she really have to bring up Kyle like that? She made it sound like...like I don't care.”
“I'm sure she didn't mean it like that,” Katarina tried to reassure her but a quick glance at Parker's grimace told her that Imogen's mom probably had meant it like that. “I'm sorry Im.”
“It's not your fault.” Imogen let out a frustrated sigh.
“Thanks for coming though. I know you were a little hesitant...so I just...I appreciate what a good friend you are Katarina. I don't have many of those left.” The smaller girl impulsively engulfed Katarina in a hug. “Please be careful with Parker,” she whispered lowly. “He's a nice guy but he's got a bit of a reputation for being a flirt. I don't think I've ever seen him get serious with anyone.”
The words were like cold water being thrown in  her face. Everything in Katarina froze. She forced a smile before pulling back. “I'm always careful,” she promised. “It's my middle name. Well, not really, but...it could be.”
“Lunch tomorrow?”
Katarina nodded, shoving her hands into the back pockets of her shorts. Her mile faded when Imogen left to relay the news to the rest of her guests. She should have known Parker was a player. 'Not a player,' an inner voice chided, 'a flirt. There is a difference.' Was there though? Katarina wasn't exactly naive when it came to men but she wasn't all that experienced either. “You have that confused look on your face again,” Parker said softly.
“Oh.” She ducked her head down, studying the apricot colored polish on her toes. “Sorry. I was just thinking.”
“About what Imogen said?” Katarina's head jerked up, her eyes widening. Parker let out a small chuckle and then sighed. “She's not very good at whispering.” He let out another sigh, walking the short distance to the rail. He stared out at the water before turning to face her. “Can I just be blunt?” She hesitated for a moment before nodding. “Pine Spring is a small town. People tend to mistaken friendliness for flirting. I'm not saying I don't flirt...I do...just not as much as people claim. As for never being serious with someone...I guess I've never met the right someone.” His voice lowered, the gold flecks in his hazel eyes intensifying. “Until now.”
Conflict warred with desire. She'd already been through one crummy relationship that had left her sad, disillusioned, and wear. Did she really want to take that risk again? Her mind kept drifting back to the kiss that wasn't quite a kiss. There had been real feeling there...on both of their parts. She hadn't just imagined that. Katarina glanced in Imogen's direction. She knew Imogen meant well, that she was trying to be a good friend, but she also knew Parker was telling the truth. 'You have enough regrets in your life, do you really want to add Parker to that list?'  The answer was simple. She was tired of regrets. If there was one thing she had learned from her parents deaths and the strangeness going on in Pine Springs it was that life was short. Too short really. “Hey Parker,” she said softly, “I like you too. Besides...” she smiled sweetly, “you still owe me a dance.”

Of Life and Death
This is a super old story of mine that I recently came across. My writing style is very old and there are a LOT of adverbs in there, but other than that I feel like it’s held up surprisingly well. Although there are a lot of Australianisms in there that I usually try to tone down. It’s not a bad premise I don’t think. It was originally going to be a Trilogy, but I only got as far as the first book.
From what I can remember there is an eternal war between the God of Life and the God of Death. Each God has a demi that they appoint to help fight their battles. The God of Death is responsible for mass destruction, plane crashes, natural disasters, accidents. Katren, the demi of Life must fight to keep the death tolls from rising.
Enjoy!
~ez
To look upon the world, one would think it simple. Normal. Billions upon billions of people, living, dying. Each individual has a past, lives the present, and looks forward to a future. Of course, there comes a time when there is no future, a time where it must end. Some have more than others. Some are barely even alive before they are dead. There is no controlling it. People try, of course. Hygiene, education and scientific experiments. There are vaccines, cures, doctors, and nurses. Anti-aging creams, botox, lipo suction, plastic surgery. All stem from a want to extend life, to keep on living, no matter the cost. Some claim they deserve it, some just want it, and others don’t like to think about it too much.
  Truth is, everyone dies.
And there isn’t anything they can do about it. Because it’s not their choice. It’s not their decision.
 It’s ours.
The rain thundered down like there was no tomorrow. It hit the ground so hard that the droplets would jump up again, so high that it became hard to differentiate between what was going up and what was going down. People ran to and fro, huddled under umbrellas and buried deep within their coats. As if that would help keep them dry, as though their feeble clothes and materials actually stood a chance against the sadistic wind, hurling sharp knives of the rain in under the umbrella’s soaking even the most water resistant fabrics with in seconds.
Katren walked through the scurry of people, head bowed down, collar drawn up around her neck. She didn’t bother to hurry, didn’t try to battle with an umbrella. There was no point, she’d get soaked through no matter what she did. She drew her coat closer, in a vain attempt to keep the wind from biting her tender flesh. She didn’t have far to go, but in weather like this, it felt as though she’d walked miles, where in actual fact it was only a few meters.
She sighed in relief when her apartment came in to view and she quickened her pace. Ducking her head, she made it to the door in one very soggy piece, and shouldered it open roughly, clutching her sodden bag to her chest. Once in the foyer, she stood still for a long moment, holding her arms out by her sides, panting slightly, blinking through the drops that slide down her darkened side fringe and into darker eyes. She heard a chuckle from afar and looked up and around, searching for the source.
“Bit wet?” the girl asked, smirking. Janie was tall, taller the Katren, with loosely curled hair that twirled to well below her shoulders. She had bright emerald eyes that were set in a fine featured and pale face that just completed her essence of beauty. Sometimes, Katren hated her best friend.
“Just a touch.” She answered a little coldly, peeling off her soaked coat and shuddering. Janie laughed again and Katren approached her casually before flicking off her hat and shaking out her hair like a dog. Janie squealed and flinched away from her, holding her hands up as if to protect herself from the flying droplets that sprung from her hair.
“Bit wet?” Katren returned tartly, brow arched. Janie scowled at her and rolled her eyes before turning and heading for the lift. Katren followed, head held high, despite knowing that she looked rather like a drowned rat next to an earthed goddess.
“What kept you so long?” Janie asked as the lift opened with a welcoming chime. They stepped in and Katren keyed in her card before stowing it back into her bag.
“You know what it’s like over there. You’re just about to finish up then suddenly you get a dozen “Before you go” requests.” She answered a trifle bitterly. Starting out in a simple temp position, she had risen through the ranks of the large firm till she had achieved the optimum position of head executive. It paid well and it was a respectable job, her mother was proud and she lived a good life.
Generally speaking.
“I tried to buzz up, but Rick didn’t answer. “ Janie continued reaching back to make a lazy show of tying up her hair. It looked perfect afterwards, of course. Katren wondered briefly how she did it, before realising that Janie was waiting for a response.
“He must have been in the studio or something.” She answered, shrugging idly. Rick was Katren’s somewhat eccentric room mate. He considered himself a budding rockstar, and while his music was easy to listen to, he never seemed to actually sign up for gigs or get his music out there.
The elevator slowed before stopping completely. The doors opened with another happy chime and she walked in to the small foyer. She fished out her other key and opened the door, shouldering it open and stepping in. Janie followed closely, shouldering her bag into a more comfortable position.
“Thanks for letting me stay, Kat.” She said as she moved for the lounge room. Katren smirked at her over her shoulder.
“I was hardly going to leave you out on your arse, was I?” she returned rhetorically. Janie snorted quietly.
“I dunno. I’ve seen the cold glare of yours before. Wouldn’t put anything past you.” She called as Katren escaped into her room, already peeling off the layers of wet clothes.  She changed quickly, putting on a plain white t-shirt and a pair of black leggings, comfy clothes. She went into her bathroom and snatched up a towel, beginning to scrub viciously at her hair. It was long and straight, falling down to her mid back, and a light golden colour, or it was, when it was dry.
Satisfied that she wasn’t going to catch pneumonia, she went out into the lounge room, slouching down beside Janie.
“What are we watching tonight?” she asked as Janie flipped over the channels to the AV channel. It was Friday night and, as a rule, they often got together to watch a movie and catch up. Janie was staying the night this time, however, as a power outage had struck her street and she’d been without power for two days now. Janie could do with out light, but to go without coffee or a hair drier for 48 hours was virtually impossible.
“Not the news. It’s never been more depressing.” She mumbled, casting an eye around for the dvd remote. Katren nodded her agreement. Although it was rarely anything major, there had been a steady rise in unforeseeable accidents lately. Things like trees falling on houses, even though there was little wind to be had, and people falling through faulty balconies. A strange number of people were often killed in these feeble accidents.
“Let’s start with the 5th season of Gilmore girls, and work our way up from there.” Janie suggested, finding the remote with a satisfied trill and slouching back down into the couch. Katren settled down beside her, snatching a pillow and hugging it to her chest, settling her chin on it comfortably.
Around halfway through season 5, Rick emerged from the small studio out the back of the apartment and looked in the lounge room with an amused expression. He stood in the door way with short dark hair, tanned features and dark eyes. He wore simple clothes, t-shirt with some unknown logo and loose jeans.  Katren arched a challenging brow at him that clearly gave him two choices, sit down and shut up, or become scarce. After a moment, he chose the former, sitting down on the floor, leaning back against the couch next to Katren’s legs. She gave him a half hearted kick and he grinned at her over his shoulder before settling in to watch the t.v.
“I’m hungry.” Rick whispered. Janie leant down to whack him across the back of his head. He cried out in surprise and pain and rubbed it whilst looking over at Janie reproachfully. Katren shook her head, throwing the pillow at him before pushing herself up to her feet.
“I’ll go get the usual.” She suggested, heading for her bedroom once more. She fished out her pair thickset boots, a jacket, scarf, beret and a coat. She donned them all and headed out for the door.
“I’ve got my phone with me. Don’t get any blood on the couch.” She warned. Janie waved to her over her head, engrossed with the television. She’d seen the season a hundred times or more, and yet she was glued to the screen as though her life depended on it.
Once outside, she drew in her coat close around her. It wasn’t raining as heavily as it was previously, but the steady drizzle still had a knack for seeping in and down her neck. She grumbled briefly to herself, wishing that she had never totalled her car last summer. It hadn’t been her fault, but she hadn’t had any insurance, which was ironic, considering the company that she worked for. So now, more than three months later, she had a dicky knee and no car.
She headed quickly down the street, the slap of her feet on the wet foot path echoing against the tall grey buildings. She didn’t understand how people could think a city was beautiful. Where was the grace in a hunk of cement? Where was the beauty in the smog that loomed threateningly among the very highest of peaks? Every tree had to be planned, nothing grew because it wanted to grow. Just like people, the nature was simply ordered. Don’t grow there. Grow here. Why? Because we want a new condo development.
It wasn’t that she hated the city. She loved it. There was always something new, something unheard of around the corner. There were always new people to meet, new people to scorn at. There were shops and markets and an alarming array of food. She was still trying new foods, even after five years of living there.
“Wait.” A sharp voice cut through the air suddenly, coming from the alleyway. Katren gasped, her heart leaping up into her throat, the sudden surge of adrenaline making her head sway alarmingly as she wheeled around to face it. She barely had time to catch her breath before she heard the unmistakable click of a gun being cocked and the explosive bang of it being fired.
At first she thought it was a prank, someone shooting blanks at her. But then there was blinding pain and she felt her knees give from beneath her as she crumbled to the pavement, gasping in pain. She heard footsteps moving back down the alleyway. They were slow, calm and deliberate, the footsteps of someone who had completed a task. A job well done.
