A Suzanne Says...Happy September
This is library card sign up month! So thanks Keanu for supporting! And thanks Amber for finding this picture.
Yesterday was busy at the library, lots of books to put a way. And of course I found a new book to read!

LIBRARY CARD SIGN-UP MONTH QUOTE 6 OF 6
Wednesday, September 6, 2023
Don’t join the book burners. Don’t think you’re going to conceal faults by concealing evidence that they ever existed. Don’t be afraid to go in your library and read every book… – Dwight D. Eisenhower
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ If you believe in the importance of libraries as the social and intellectual centers of communities, check out United for Libraries! The image was…
Ten Reasons You Should Get a Library Card
Libraries are AMAZING, and at many points in my life have served as a refuge for me. As a child, we would visit the local public library multiple times a week. I was quite a bookworm from a young age and frequently maxed out my loans! I would not be who I am today without the local library. Libraries are not only incredible third places but also full of amazing resources for the communities…
3/29/24 — Open 6-9p Mask recommended. No open drinks, please.
Two pictures today. 1st is a Children's Dept. library card of the Dayton Public Library from 1945/'46. 2nd is an older picture of the Dayton Library that issued the card. I found the card tipped in a children's book with a page of long division homework.
you look either 11 or 36 in your selfie
HAHA fair enough; the general consensus on the photo was that I look like I'm in my early 20s, which isn't too far off - i'm 26 (and a half!).
part of the reason i asked was that, as @nyantara @whenimreallyathundacat @osmanthusoolong and some others suggested, many people think i'm in my early 20s - that is, a student in the classes i teach rather than the prof. last time i flew i was also asked if i was a minor, which i feel is a little much, even for my baby face. this is made worse irl because i'm rather petite in stature.
(more thoughts below the cut)
i think looking young also runs in my family! my mom is 58. here's a pic of her on our hike 2 weeks ago; imo she looks younger than that.
it's also definitely weird to be in a space of always having been assumed to be older than i am online - i started pretending to be an adult online when i was like 7 or 8 (including in places i Should Not Have Been), and people believed me. as long as i didn't post my face, i could keep up my cover. i'm an only child, had no friends as a kid, and grew up a dreaded ~~~gifted kid~~~, which together meant that i was talking like an adult, to adults, basically all the time, and didn't really fit in with kids my age until things started evening out at the end of college/beginning of grad school (though i was still by far the youngest person in my grad program by several years).
also also i went to school a year early and was suggested (my parents turned it down) to skip another grade. i was already by far the youngest in my class, always; the last person to lose a tooth, the last to learn to drive, and so on. i had a weird complex about always being too young, too behind, the last one to do everything. this interacts with looking young in ways that it's hard to verbalize. even now, i'm assumed to lack the expertise that there is a literal piece of paper saying that i have.
tldr it's interesting to observe the ways that ageism and anti-childism in particular inform how we perceive how old we look. obviously, this also impacts elderly people, but i'm not there yet!
#ask#anonymous#sorry for the spiel that you didn't sign up for. though maybe you did bc you came into librarycards's ask box hahahah
ID: a reply by @librarycards which reads: there's much to be said about butchfemme mirroring but it strikes me that once in an airport a Black woman with gorgeous acrylics was working at this cafe and i watched her, in one smooth motion, open a soda can with a little card she pulled out of her pocket; the thing is, i had just shorn my nails right down to the quick for practical and sensory reasons and also can't open stuff when they're like this, and i've been using that strategy ever since. end ID
YES oh my god i feel like i’m gonna weep reading this, i feel this particular solidarity so deeply
i left the house for the first time in 5 months for bloodwork on monday & the Latina phlebotomist complimented my nails & on the way home my femme & i (both white) were talking about the presentation-disability-race-class intersections of like
1) white doctors cannot handle my buzzcut-acrylics-beard-tits situation, & i don’t let them see it — even though i’d be more comfortable if i could, thus the months i spent coming home from an appointment & immediately putting on a dress to do my nails.
Black & Latina phlebotomists may assume i’m a cis woman but they talk to that nonexistent woman like she matters, like she’s full of style & humor & pain, so i can still describe the exact peacock feather pattern on my extra-long stilettos when the medical assistant complimented them what must’ve been close to a year ago. i am — i’ve been challenging myself to reroute from human-centric language lately, so not humanized, but solidified by these rare affirming medical encounters. especially considering how rarely i interact with people in person beyond my two housemates, it’s so energizing.
2) to paraphrase my gf: white lesbians will make endless rude comments about your long nails & then be like why won’t any woc come to our lgbtq org? :(( meanwhile all my Black women colleagues are like omg those look amazing!!
now that i’ve deferred because a uni degree is nothing but an entrance ticket into moderate financial security and not worth utterly obliterating my mental health over i am compiling my own curriculum. all the posts i’ve ever tagged with #ref because they contain essays articles and other texts that i want to read but have never gotten around to, all that goes on the list. around fifty academic articles and book chapters downloaded onto my laptop from jstor while i still have access to it, tailored to fit my personal interests.
rearranging my self-education. little mx autodidact. carving out a passage through the brambles with a freshly sharpened machete. make no mistake, the thorns are piercing and will continue to tear at my exposed limbs, but the pain is worth the fruits of knowledge at the end, real knowledge and not something superimposed from above. i know, i know, undergrads aren’t afforded that freedom of narrowing our study, it’s something earned with time and effort and only fully permitted at a “higher” level of education, but who determines these levels?
it sounds silly and rash, but it’s a long-deliberated decision. the university environment is not right for my weird brain despite my literary inclinations, and i prefer to select my own path towards learning while working a low paying job on the side. perhaps i’ll return in a year’s time after all, matured and mellowed, hardened or roughened with real-life experience and online self-teaching, to pursue liberal arts as the most, well, liberated pathway. maybe not.
maybe if i had gone to one of those colleges where they allow you to pick and choose your own modules for your degree entirely (like one of the people that i most admire on this website did in its time) things would have gone down differently, but alas. let the world keep turning and let everything that serves no purpose any longer decompose and compost into something new .
“what has this got to do with autism?” you may ask, “i’m autistic and i completed a normal bachelors’ degree just fine.” your answer: having been in a place of moderate autistic burnout for years that abruptly turned severe in the past few months, my bodymind has shifted into what is known rather disparagingly under the medical model as “autistic regression” or “regressive autism”: a gradual distancing further and further away from accepted neurotypical standards of moving through and navigating the world around me.
one of the ways in which this unmasking presents itself, apart from the more noticeable characteristics such as outwardly visible stimming and a complete absence of eye contact, is a total inability to focus on, be motivated by and/or engage in any (textual, literary, cinematic etc etc) materials that do not connect at least tangentially or superficially with my special interests (that being ghosts/hauntings, hauntology, folk horror, lovecraftiana/cosmic horror, horror in general, the gothic, neurodiversity, alternative music; narratives/storytelling, folklore/fairytales; queer theory; carceral abolition and liberation; and a few other subjects here unlisted). according to normative capitalist logic of usefulness and productivity, that makes me “severely disabled” by virtue of “restricted interests”. i would say it makes me a interesting person with tall twisted tales to tell, but nevermind that silly nonsense, it’s a mad person speaking.
at this present moment i have no motivation, wish nor desire to continue wasting time and energy attempting to study and remember things that do not connect with the key concepts that my mind is constantly orbiting around. if that makes me incurious or annoying or limited, so be it — this neurological difference affects every aspect of my personality and i do not wish to change it. if the world around us refuses to change, we must either alter it ourselves or construct our own pathways out of the shadows and into the moonlit garden.
#thank you cavar sarah for directly/indirectly inspiring me to make this (highly personal yet hopefully informative to some?) post!!#@librarycards on here#aer writing on transMadness and adjacent topics gives me life and constant material for thought and consideration#jamie.txt#uniposting#autism#actually autistic#neurodiversity#neuroqueer#autpunk#disability#autistic#autism acceptance#college dropout#autistic burnout
