X-MEN #17 Review

"I am Magneto and I do not give speeches."

The X-Men vs fake X-Men rodeo in the snow continues as Xorn searches for Quentin and the twin rampages on Merle. There stands Magneto, full of gumption and dexies, the only thing between a monster and a town full of ingrates. 3K yap on and reveal the identity of another member, a D-lister Mags knows well. Spoilers for all issues and solicits of adjectiveless X-Men.

Surprise! Quentin ain't dead. I don't think a single person thought he was, but a few minutes rest will be great for his health especially after falling out of the sky. I'm not sure how I feel about technobabble making its way into X-Men, as we get a flashback to Quentin writing 'code' to protect his body when he's unconscious. It's something Jitter in Uncanny does occasionally when her powers give her technical mastery - the mall fight was especially egregious for just shouting medical terms that few readers could understand, let alone The Outliers. I think it mostly achieves the intended effect here, highlighting Quentin's impressive capabilities and the 'levelling up' he's been doing since Cyclops gave him a talking to back in issue #9.

Kid Omega has been yapping about his mighty brain for decades, so I'm happy to call it payoff for all the 'supercomputer/10 million thoughts a second' stuff. As someone who coasted without effort on natural ability then hit a wall hard in high school, it's a bit of a power fantasy to see that potential as unlimited. 'Hey brain, make my body do exactly this at exactly this time' even more so.

X-Men are like communists - they spend too much time fighting each other. The 3K X-Men accusing the real ones of being fake sellouts just makes that hit harder. Honestly I'm over this fight with the amount of combatants standing still. I know it's meant to be a delaying action preventing the X-Men from backing up Magneto, but a team vs team fight lasting 3 issues is decompressed to the point of barely moving. Feels like AvX or similar stalling in an eternal second act.

I figured out what seems off about Magneto - his angles! He's usually chiselled and angular, even gaunt at times. Rounded features looks odd on him. I'm not even nitpicking there, I just needed to elucidate the nagging feeling I've had. In a word, he looks ugly. I enjoy Stegman's pencils in general but Diaz does a better Magneto. Just quietly I'm a little salty that Uncanny is getting Valerio Schiti - they do a stupid hot Magneto and I'd love to see it again. Anyway, Mags sounds like a fool here, as he makes a speech about not making speeches. I hope he's lying, because this motherfucker gives so many speeches. They're one of his best features.

Heard you the first time dude.

Another is that he's a mutant menace, a term that's been thrown around a bit lately. Mags and the twin go at it but he's not trying to kill her and it's unclear if he actually could. Either way, when they speak Mags responds with cutting regret and an implicit challenge. With Quentin still knocked out there's nobody to counteract Cassandra Nova's influence on the twin. Cassandra refers to the twin as a '13 year old girl' so add 'forcing gender binary on a non-corporeal entity' to the list of her crimes.

You used to be somebody, man

It's implied that Nova is laying it on thick here, or otherwise the twin has a really good grasp of race war concepts and rhetoric. If it's the former, I think something is lost by Cassandra Nova giving them a script to follow and basically puppeting them. Mags is trying to appeal to agency - the ability to choose, and they're actually having a back and forth.

The twin repeating Nova word for word raises questions about the degree of agency as they smash Magneto, who was just answering the question. The hope spot of his words staggering them is brief but suggests that this crisis will eventually be solved non-violently. I do have to laugh at Mags getting called out for betraying mutantkind by driving a sentinel to protect flatscans, especially as it's Cassandra Nova saying it. There's a real opportunity to show how this propaganda sits with the mutant on the street, so to speak. These X-Men are very mutant focused yet Graymalkin still stands. They have a history of being establishment lackeys and beating down/imprisoning mutants who step out of line. They failed the Morlocks and Xavier killed Krakoa. It's not that simple but propaganda is a powerful tool especially when life sucks. Cassandra Nova might be the worst spokesperson there though - Genosha was not an act of mutant solidarity.

I love Ben Liu and Beast cheerleading Magneto. Get these boys some popcorn! Ben's finger pointing is unfair but hilarious, 'hooptie-ass sentinel' is not a phrase I expected to hear in the year of our DOOM 2025. Ben running off to help Magneto is a beat that really works, especially if you take Magneto's mentoring allusion seriously. We haven't seen Ben use his powers since issue #2, so anything can happen. The flipside is any kind of success is going to feel a bit unearned, but fuck it - jab my boy with dexies too and get out of the way!

Wyre talks a huge game with not a lot to back it up. I kinda want someone to kill him for being cringe, a sentiment Cassandra Nova seems to agree with. There's a production joke here - Mackay wanted to use Sabertooth for his role but he was killed off in Sabertooth War. Creed is certainly more impressive than this dipshit and Quentin has nightmares about the guy. It's a beat that can work, giving Wyre something to prove, but we'll see how that plays out. Right now he's delivering exposition and stating his feelings plainly like it's 1975. He's not alone in that...

Me too, Astra, me too.

We get a better look at 3K, as the third member is revealed to be... Astra. *sad trombone noises* If you're not familiar she's an old Magneto worshipper and the one who created Joseph, thrice, I think. Bit of a one trick pony, though she does teleport. I can't say that she's particularly interesting or threatening, but I do like her 'clone an army of Magnetos, sorry Josephs, and flip the magnetic poles' idea purely for its unhingedness. The idea that she keeps bringing it up is pretty funny, these meetings must be so tense. Like I said, one trick pony even if it is a great trick. Her being an F lister with minimal development might actually work in her favour, as aside from being obsessed with Magneto she's a blank canvas. That she was last seen in House of X #5 suggests that 3K itself is fairly new. If that's their #1 reason for not inviting Sinister they're idiots. Like there's a very good chance he'll subvert your project for himself even if you don't invite him - MF does mutant science crimes for breakfast lunch and dinner. He blew up the universe with cloning!

More interesting is 3K's agenda - mutant supremacy taken to the extreme end point. It's very blatantly a great replacement conspiracy theory, which is a really uncomfortable idea to put to print. Turning humans into mutants has been done a lot, though the proposed scale is new. Another way to look at it is 'give everyone superpowers, kill the rest' though we don't know why they want to do that. 'Hating humans' is pretty dull but maybe more will be revealed next issue when we find out who the chairman is. I wish they'd just get it out now, this slowrolling is tedious. I'm almost positive it will be the cliffhanger next time, but like, just fucking spit it out! Let's get the plot moving, yo! We've been fighting in the snow for 70% of the run at this point, just tell us who you are and do your thing. Some C-list genetics bad guy from the 90s/00s? Thought so. It took 17 issues to reveal Astra, for fuck's sake, which doesn't exactly hype me for who's under the helmet. At that point, why bother? Just get on with the plot.

Magik's Soul Sword keeps getting wider, right?

In a lot of ways these 3K X-Men and their masters are The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants with some ORCHIS scraps and a bigger budget. Extremists coming at the X-Men with accusations of failing mutants is one of the oldest X-Men tropes in existence. It can be interesting, but it needs to have something to say. I want to see a pamphlet on their beef or something, see if they've got anything fresh or if they're just another extremist mutant group. The thing is that a mutant who decided 'fuck humans. I'm done with these genocides' is a pretty reasonable position right now. Fighting the X-Men like every other group before? Not so much. Go destroy Graymalkin or something, you know? If you really want to show the X-Men how it's done, do that. Do their job better.

Ben spearheads Jen flying Piper to her mother, ideally to help convince the twin to cut it out. It's a solid plan, though there's a very high chance she gets reduced to a smear real quick. Mama Cobb is a mutant hater and is culpable for this mess, and she's terrified. We'll see how that wraps up next time, or maybe the issue after that with this fucking pacing. It's great to see Ben and Jen coming into their own, and Beast looks like he'll have to fight Wyre. The greasy weirdo has snuck into their base, and while it'd be great for Beast to fuck him up I kinda hope Glob bonks him with a frying pan or something. Why not both? Solicits have told us that agent fuckface comes to jail Scott in the wake of this second Iron Night, and something about Revelation/the artist formerly known as Doug Ramsey, I think. That sounds fun, I just wish it didn't take so long to get there. Not out of impatience, I just object to the padding and repetition plus slowrolled mysteries that don't land. Or impact the plot/characters even. That's probably not happening, so this book will remain fun but very frustrating.

Also... Why is Tom Brevoort answering all the letters for this book and Uncanny? That strikes me as really weird. Really fucking weird. Does that seem odd to anyone else? We're still seeing letters about Raid on Graymalkin and Chuck Hunt, all answered by TB. If I was writing anything and the editor was handling the forward-facing fan interaction in a book with my name on it I'd be like 'all due respect but what's the deal here? Maybe stay in your lane.' He is the 'conductor of x' but this feels like clearing the orchestra to be applauded solo. I admit I'm super biased against him but it really sticks out to me.

clawdeen is an absolute queen when it comes to finding and constructing the most stylish outfits — so the moment she becomes aware of your plight she makes it her personal mission to rectify the situation

she gets out some measuring tape, tailor’s chalk and starts taking measurements — repositioning you a dozen times over as she asks you about your personal style preferences

like of course she knows you dress masculinely but she needs ideas about fabrics, styles, cuts and so on

intermittently pecking you on the lips as she goes about her business (she is your girlfriend, after all, not just your stylist)

it takes her a week to get some ideas and blueprints together, which she presents to you after class — explaining her vision and handing over some clothes she bought (yes she loves to make her own but she’s also not above going shopping when the time comes — even if your proportions made it a bit difficult)

from there she makes a few different drafts, making you wear them so she can get a tangible idea about what she needs to alter before moving on to the next draft — and she doesn’t stop until she’s sure it’s perfect in every way

until the sleeves are the perfect length and diameter

Not like always, she notes, that there is one person in the tavern who isn't cheering or congratulating her. They're not even making eye contact with her, yet Siyeon is intrigued by them. She's had her fair share of tomatoes and hecklers, but complete disinterest is something foreign to Siyeon.

Nothing is stopping her from turning away from that person and forgetting them as she parties the night away with her supporters, yet she wants to know who they are, and more importantly, why they would turn away from her?

Siyeon grabs a pair of drinks that are offered in the sea of people coming towards her, and she waves away or ignores the rest of them.

Something tells her that this person, whoever they are, will finally end the chase that she's been pursuing from such a young age.

Why can't I walk into a normal tavern?

You clean your bloodied knife with a towel that a hesitant bartender handed to you. After ordering the cheapest whiskey on the menu, you throw some spare coins on the table before taking a load off in the back corner of the tavern.

Luckily for you, the many scars and weapons lining your body makes you very unapproachable to most, and you appreciate that you get to be left alone for once.

The bounty was good money, especially for one on a werewolf. Usually, werewolves ended up being on the low end of bounties, but this one had a pretty penny on its end.

Unfortunately for you, the reason why that bounty was so high could be seen with the deep cut on your shoulder. You had cleaned and bandaged the weapon, but you were too lazy to change shirts. The ripped, tattered shirt could survive at least one or two more bounties, you figured. Your usual tailor was out of town as well, so you didn't have much of a choice in the matter as well.

JiU didn't ask about where the money came from or why your clothing was consistently covered in blood, but she made clothes that fit you well. You paid well, so there was no reason for her to ask questions in the first place.

You look up from your knife as a barmaid approaches your table with a sweet smile on her face. Once she spots the weapon in your hand, the smile on her face disappears.

"Here'syourdrink!" She squeaks out before setting the drink down, grabbing the coins, and quickly running away from you.

You chuckle before downing the small glass of whiskey. You like the way it burns as it travels down your throat since it distracts from the pain in your shoulder.

You like the quiet atmosphere that this tavern appears to have. It has a certain buzz that comes naturally to social gathering places, but no one was being too loud.

Well, that's how it was supposed to be, until a black-haired woman jumped onto a nearby table. With a guitar in hand, the bar begins to cheer as you roll your eyes.

Another drunken buffoon trying to get some coin without using any actual skills.

You notice that you're gripping the knife a little too tightly, so you quickly place it back with the rest of your knives before glancing over to the woman again.

She's started to sing, and her voice would sound angelic and perfect if you cared to hear what she was singing about.

You were busy and had things to do. You wanted one peaceful night with a few drinks to drown your pain in. Was that too much to ask for?

You just grumble to yourself until that annoying woman shuts her mouth, and of course, that is when the whole tavern erupts with laughter, cheering, and lots of loud talking.

You deeply sigh before playing with the bloody cloth in your hand.

Maybe this will continue to keep people away from me.

Everyone turns to congratulate and sweet talk the female minstrel, and you really couldn't care until you feel her eyes on you.

You've had a keen sense of when you're being watched as it's saved your ass on multiple occasions. Her eyes are no different, but they aren't predatory or in anger.

It's a look of curiosity, to put it simply. She's curious about you for God-knows-what reason, but you don't want to explore that cesspool of emotions and late night talking tonight.

One drink was enough for tonight, you reasoned with yourself. That's why you tried to leave, but you were trapped by the crowd that was just dying to see that stupid minstrel.

Well, isn't this just great!

"Hey~" Siyeon saddles up to the stranger's side while ignoring their clear-as-day unamused facial expression.

"Not interested in harlots." They grumble, which causes Siyeon to scoff.

"I am not a harlot! I have as much class as it takes to get me through the day."

"Yeah, it shows."

They try to push past Siyeon, but she won't let it happen.

Why won't you let me talk to you? Are you scared of what might happen… perhaps you'll fall in love with me?

"I'll pay for a drink if you'll sit and chat with me, even if for a moment," Siyeon begs before grabbing their arm.

The stranger cocks their eyebrow before sighing deeply.

"I like whiskey." They mutter before taking a seat at a nearby booth.

"What kind? There's lot to choose from, like-"

"The stronger, the better."

"Okay then…" Siyeon awkwardly stares off to the side before waving a barmaid over. "Two drinks, if you would. Whiskey for them, soju for me."

The barmaid nods before scurrying off, and Siyeon hears you scoff while relaxing into the cushion of the booth.

"She ran away because she was scared of me."

Siyeon curiously glances at you before shaking your head.

"I'm sure that's not the-"

You carelessly toss a knife on the table, which causes Siyeon to jump back in her seat.

"See? You're scared too."

"No, it's not like that-"

"You don't need to lie to me." For once, the intriguing stranger's eyes soften before becoming firm once again. "I can handle the truth, given what I do for a living."

"What do you do?"

"I'm a monster hunter. A better one, if I may say, since I'm not dead yet."

Siyeon tries her best not to snort while laughing.

"You amuse me…" She trails off while trying to catch your name.

"Yeah, you're not getting a name out of me, Siyeon."

"Yah! You know my name. That's not fair." A slight whine comes from her lips, and a slight smile appears on yours as Siyeon tries not to pout.

"Okay, okay… Y/N. That's my name, don't abuse it."

"Y/N, huh…" She repeats the name.

I like the way it rolls off of my tongue.

"What, you don't like it?" You tease as Siyeon sighs.

"No, I think it fits you."

"I sure hope it does, you know, since it's my name and all."

Siyeon laughs again.

"I like your sense of humor."

"Really? People think I can be dry at times… I'm glad to have your words to prove them wrong." They say as the barmaid quickly walks over.

She drops off Siyeon's order before moving to another table.

"Shall we drink?" Siyeon grabs her glass before sliding yours to you.

"Eh, why not?"

"You're going, Y/N? Is it your bedtime already?" Siyeon's comment annoys you, but her teasing isn't completely unwanted.

"No, I just have more important things to be doing, like not talking with you "

"Ouch, Y/N. Oh, how you wound me!" Siyeon dramatically places a hand over her heart, and you scoff before sliding out of the booth.

"Get used to it. I either stab people with my knives or my words. If I were you, I'd accept the rudeness." You calmly say as she stiffens up.

"You were going to stab me?"

"It depended on what you were going to try." You admit as Siyeon gasps.

"For the last time, I am not a harlot-"

"That's not what I meant, Siyeon, and I think you know that." You grumble.

"Oh, then what was on your mind, then? It probably was me~"

You feel your face heat up, but you refuse to give this flirt the satisfaction of knowing that her teasing and overall warmth melt your cold exterior.

"That's not… the case. Not at all. I think you're just fine."

"Lots of people think I'm fine. You'll have to say a more creative compliment if you want to capture my heart, my dear Y/N~"

"Is your head always so far up your ass, or am I getting to see a special side of the infamous Siyeon?" You joke as Siyeon tries to not spit out her drink.

"Infamous? Me?"

"Don't play coy with me, you flirtatious minx." You blatantly say. "I know all about you. I've heard stories from the tailor in town, along with a few of my monster-hunting friends. You've got a reputation that you… know how to play people as easily as you play that guitar."

"Why's that so important to you?" Siyeon softly asks, and you shake your head.

"I… hate to admit it, but I need your help. You're much more charming and beloved than I am. There's this person that I need information out of… but they are extremely hard to get a hold of. Luckily for me, she responds well to beautiful women."

"You think I'm beautiful?"

"...Besides the point, but yes, I do."

"What's her name, and where do I need to meet you?"

"Wait, you want to do th-"

Siyeon interrupts you by placing a hand on yours.

"There's something different about you. I knew it when I laid my eyes on you."

"Oh Siyeon, you say that to everyone."

"You're not everyone, though, and that's what makes you so great." She offers you a warm smile, and you don't think that you can fall any further for her charms. "Once again, I will ask you for her name, and where I need to meet you."

"Sana…. And we should meet outside of this bar in three days." You quickly say before pulling your hand away from hers.

"What about your clothing? You're not going when you look like that, right?"

"The tailor's out of town. What am I-"

"-I know someone who can help. JiU has an apprentice, you know?"

You cross your arms and stare at Siyeon curiously.

"Who would that be, exactly?"

Who did Siyeon send me to, and why does she look like a child?

The young tailor's youthful features and kind smile tell you that she has no idea who the fuck you are, and what you do.

So JiU hasn't told her anything… that's good.

"Excuse me, but you're JiU's apprentice, right?" You gently ask, and she excitedly nods.

"In the blood and flesh. You can call me Gahyeon because it's weird for people to call me JiU's apprentice. It feels too formal for what I do."

You nod in acknowledgment.

"I'll make note of it."

"So, what brings you to our humble store, then?"

"I need some new clothes."

"....What kind of clothes?"

You toss the torn shirt on the counter, and Gahyeon analyzes the shirt with horrified curiosity.

"Something that'll prevent this from happening again."

"Got it!" Gahyeon says as you throw a bag of money on the counter. "That's way more money than I need, you know."

"It's not just for the shirt."

"What do you mean?"

"Don't ask any more questions, and the money's yours."

"Oh, okay…" Gahyeon scoops up the money, and she heads to the back of the store. "It'll be done in a day or two!"

"Look what the cat dragged in…" Siyeon taunts you as you take a seat next to her at the bar. "How'd it go with Gahyeon?"

"She didn't ask many questions, so I would say that it went well."

"Really? Gahyeon usually doesn't shut up when I come in."

"To be fair, you're not exactly quiet either."

"I would be offended by that, but you're cute, so I guess I can let it go." Siyeon shrugs before sliding over a shot of whiskey. "I got you some whiskey. You're welcome, by the way."

"Wasn't going to say thank you anyway." You quickly take the shot before continuing to talk with Siyeon. "Can I have some rum?"

"Of course, anything for you." She winks, and you hide your embarrassment as she chuckles. "You're really cute, considering that you could easily kill me if you wanted to."

"Don't tempt me, Siyeon." You mutter as she hands the shot glass to the bartender.

"I'm surprised you came and sat with me at the bar. I thought you preferred sitting in the back."

"I did, but then someone came and changed me." You say as the bartender sets the shot of rum on the counter.

"Oh, and who would that be?"

"I'm not stroking your ego, Siyeon." You roll your eyes before drinking the rum.

"Aww, so it was me! I appreciate the sentiment." She smiles, and you shake your head.

"I know you tease me about acting differently than I look, but you're much nicer than I thought you would be." You shyly admit as Siyeon blushes.

"I'm honored that you think so highly of me, Y/N." Siyeon softly says.

"That sentiment goes both ways." You confirm, and Siyeon chuckles.

"So… you want to get out of here?" Siyeon asks, and your eyes widen. "No, no, I didn't mean it like that-"

"A midnight walk sounds fantastic. Maybe I can tell you about Sana, and you can tell me some more about yourself."

"If I didn't know you better, Y/N, I'd say you were trying to flirt with me." Siyeon chuckles to herself, but you're deadly serious.

"Maybe I am." You mutter under your breath.

"Ah-ha! You are so much different than you seem. I like this part of you, but honestly, I just like you, Y/N."

Monster Trio Helping Reader from a Nightmare

Completely self-indulgent and rushed since I just woke up from a nightmare. I now have a cup of lavender and chamomile tea so let's hope I fall asleep into bliss. I wrote this off pure adrenaline and exhaustion. I can feel the crash of everything now lmao Uhh I hope this helps someone else besides me! Have fun reading!

Luffy, Sanji, Zoro x Reader (Gender Neutral/Non-Binary)

Warnings: fluff, mentions of vague nightmares, relationships can be taken as platonic or romantic tbh- I wrote this in like ten minutes so grammar issues are there, and it may be incoherent but I will die with pride

Monkey D. Luffy-

So, you wake up from a nightmare-

Chances of Luffy actually being up to comfort you are very- extremely- low

You would either have to go to him for comfort or by some miracle he had his own nightmare about the food being gone and he went to go check on it

Either way, if you wake him up or he finds you in a completely terrified state- he understands

His goofy personality will still be there but depending on your level of fear he may tone it down for you

He will reassure you that you are safe- You are the ship surrounded by people who love you and they would do anything to protect you

After these words and making sure you feel safe, he will offer to stay the night with you because after all-

He is your captain and the future King of the Pirates!

There is no one better than him to protect you, especially from nightmares

He believes in this fully so somehow you have to, or you will at least go back to sleep feeling better after talking to the goofball

If nightmares become a reoccurring thing, he gets Chopper involved since he does not know what else to do

May offer to quite literally fight your nightmares for you

Vinsmoke Sanji-

Either Sanji seeks you out depending on if he is awake (I believe it is said to be sleeping from midnight to five in the morning) and can hear your whimpers from the scary things plaguing your unconscious mind

Or you go to wake him up to ask for any kind of tea that will calm you down and let you get back to sleep peacefully

Either way, he will be glad to hear you out if you want to talk

If not, he will make you something soothing and wait with you until you get sleepy again

He reassures you that it is completely normal to have nightmares- You are human after all and not even he and the others can fend off their own

Bottom line- You are not alone and he makes sure to stress that

He will not push you to speak or force his presence with you in order to make sure you feel safe

He lets you decide what you need while just letting you know he is there for you

If nightmares become a reoccurring thing he will also speak to Chopper but the two of them come up with a plan around either talking or medicine with herbal teas in hopes it will stop on their own

Roronoa Zoro-

Zoro seeking you out first are actually rather high

Since his sleeping schedule is somehow beyond fucked- He sleeps from 4-7 (I believe that is stated not sure)

But either way, if your unconscious mind genuinely thought you were in danger, Zoro somehow would feel that and be on alert

He wakes you up with no remorse and asks if you are okay

He allows you to gather your thoughts but after seeing that fear-stricken face on you he offers you two choices- Go back to sleep and he will watch over you or go drink with him then do the first option

Zoro is the more stubborn one for sure (after Luffy) since he won’t leave a crewmate in a distressed state of mind after witnessing the effect it had on you

He will not share any personal stories, but he does heavily hint that he gets nightmares too

There is no cure, but he knows that damn good company may help with the fear the nightmares bring

If your nightmares become a regular thing, he will advise you to speak to someone, but he also understands if you refuse

If watching over you while you sleep makes you feel better you bet he will make it his duty to do that until the nightmares stop which leads to-

You become napping buddies and no one wants to find out what happens if they wake you up since Zoro gains a sixth sense for that
