"Michaela, tell us about your strategy for tomorrow's race." A journalist called out, as the buzz of the crowded room grew expectant.

Michaela leaned back in her chair and took a sip of water before addressing the sea of faces. "Strategy?" She echoed, a playful smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. "Well, I plan to start from 17th, work my way through the pack, and then just teleport to the top step of the podium. What do you think of that, Max?"

Max couldn't help but chuckle at the side. "Sounds perfectly possible," He quipped, earning a round of laughter from the room. Sebastian, ever the accomplice to their comedic duo, nodded wistfully. "If only we had that technology."

The room lightened up a bit, the tension of the intense qualifying session dissipating. Another journalist, seemingly not in on the joke, fired off a more serious question. "Michaela, your performance at the Tuscan Grand Prix was historic, but since then, your team has struggled. How do you plan to overcome the recent setbacks?"

Michaela's smile remained, but her eyes narrowed in recognition of the journalist's voice. Anthony Georges, a motorsports reporter for the BBC, had never been shy to challenge Michaela's dodges. From her Formula 2 days, Georges had been the bane of her existence. The very reason she had walked out of a press conference during the first race of the 2018 season.

"Well, I've been taking inspiration from my latest shopping trip. You know, you might not find what you're looking for right away, but with persistence and a bit of luck, you can still come home with something special." She winked at the Brit, her words another clever dodge.

The room rippled with laughter again, but the journalist pressed on. "I meant technically speaking. What is Alfa Romeo doing to improve?" His lips pressed into a stern line, graying eyebrows furrowed in a smug, accusatory expression.

Michaela's expression softened as she took a moment to gather her thoughts. "Look, we're working tirelessly behind the scenes. It's not just about slapping on a new wing or tweaking the engine. We're in the middle of a season that's thrown more curveballs than you can imagine. But we're a team and together we're navigating these challenges."

The room fell quiet for a brief moment, Georges seemingly at a loss for a comeback for the moment. Sebastian, ever the opportunist, jumped in. "And let's not forget, she's still the only one here who's managed to avoid hitting a wall this weekend. That has to count for something, right?"

The tension broke again, the room erupting in sporadic chuckles. Max couldn't resist a laugh either, remembering his own unfortunate incident earlier in the weekend.

"Speaking of walls," Another journalist said. "What do you make of the criticism that your recent DNF in Sochi is a sign that you're not cut out for this level of racing?"

Michaela's smile never wavered. "Ah, the infamous 'female driver' stereotype," She said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "Well, if you ask me, I'd say it's more about the car and the track than my gender. But, hey, if you want to believe that I'm secretly trying to redecorate the circuits with my car parts, go ahead. That's not my problem."

The room was filled with a mix of shocked expressions and snickers. Sebastian leaned forward, a glint in his eye. "I must admit, I've hit a few walls in my time," He said with a self-deprecating grin. "It's part of the job description, isn't it?"

Michaela nodded solemnly, playing along. "Absolutely, Sebastian. It's in the fine print right under 'must be able to operate under extreme G-forces' and 'capable of consuming copious amounts of energy drinks.'" Her reference to energy drinks is emphasized by Max who lifts his own RedBull energy drink in a mocking toast.

A journalist, a newer face in the pressroom, from the back of the room, emboldened by Georges' initial challenge, decided to jump into the fray. "But isn't it true that your teammate Kimi Raikkonen seems to handle the car better?"

Michaela's eyes twinkled with mischief as she looked over at her press officer, Beata Gasparro, who motioned frantically for her to keep her calm. "Kimi's a legend," She said, "But let's not forget, he's also got more than a decade on me. I've got plenty of time to get the hang of it."

"I'd like to add that Mickey's actually doing relatively better than Kimi this season. She's outperformed him at all races this season except for what?" Sebastian spoke up in defense of the former Ferrari reserve driver.

He glanced towards Michaela and Max, knowing the two of them would know the answer to his question. The Alfa Romeo driver decided to remain quiet, choosing instead to stare straight ahead at the questioning journalist.

Max jumped in her stead responding with a casual, "Spa and Sochi.", and a smile as if punctuating the point. Sebastian nodded at the answer, closing the question off with, "I'm sure Kimi won't mind me saying that."

"He doesn’t care much about anything these days," Michaela muttered under her breath. The cheeky remark had the room in stitches again. Kimi was notorious for his icy personality, so it was no secret that his preference for not speaking much was a running joke in the paddock.

The journalist's face reddened, but he maintained his composure. "What about the psychological aspect, then? Do you feel any extra pressure being the first woman to achieve such a feat?"

Michaela leaned forward, her gaze intense. "I'm a driver, not a pioneer on a mission to prove anything about my gender. The pressure I feel is the same as any of these guys feel—to win races and do the best I can for the team. And honestly, if I let every question about my gender throw me off, I'd never get out of bed in the morning. So, let's talk about racing, yeah?"

Her words hit the journalist like a cold splash of water, but as she sensed an opportunity, she added fuel to the fire. "You know, we've got a race to talk about tomorrow. Maybe we should focus on the actual cars going around in circles instead of my inability to pee standing up." The room erupted in laughter, even Georges couldn't help but crack a smile.

"But seriously," Michaela continued, her tone earnest now, "I race because I love it. Because I'm good at it. And because every time I get into the cockpit, I'm racing against the best in the world, regardless of their gender. Now, if you have any more questions about the actual racing, I'd be happy to answer them. Otherwise, I think we're all set here."

Sebastian's hum of approval only served to embolden Michaela in knowing she had properly shut down the years of gendered attacks on her and her abilities.

"Alright, alright," Georges jumped in, seemingly admitting defeat, raising his hands in mock surrender. "We'll stick to the racing, as the lady wishes." He leaned back in his chair, a glint of respect in his eyes. "But, let's talk about strategy for real this time. What's the game plan for tomorrow?"

Michaela leaned back in her chair, a smirk playing on her lips. "Strategy doesn't work if you explain it," She quipped before taking a deep breath and giving a more serious response. "We're going to play it smart, work the tires, and hope for some good old-fashioned racing luck. That's all I can say without giving away our secret sauce."

The press conference continued, with questions flying from all angles, but the mood had shifted. The journalists, though still probing, had been put in their place and were now receiving the kind of answers that didn't feed into their narratives.

Michaela's responses remained sharp, and she was practiced at pivoting the conversation back to the race. "Tomorrow's going to be a tough one," She said, her eyes scanning the room, "But that's what we live for, right?" She grinned at Max and Sebastian, who nodded in agreement.

As the conference drew to a close, Michaela thanked the journalists with a wink directed towards the BBC reporter. As she received a smile that formed a semblance of respect between the two of them, she left the room a bit lighter. With Beata on her tail, however, she could feel the scolding coming from the middle-aged Italian woman.

"Michaela, you can't just say things like that," Beata whispered in rushed Italian urgently as they navigated through the corridors of the Algarve International Circuit.

Michaela turned to her, her smile never leaving her face. "Why not? It's the truth, isn't it?"

Beata sighed. "It's a fine line, Mickey. You don't want to be seen as disrespectful."

Michaela raised an eyebrow. "But I'm not. I'm just telling them to stick to the racing. I've earned that much, don't you think so?" The unspoken insinuation of all the hardship Michaela had been forced to navigate with the confrontational press during her junior career hung in the air.

With a tinge of acceptance, Beata sighed, "Why can I never win with you?"

Michaela just laughed as they approached the team's garage. "You know, I'm not trying to make enemies," She said, her voice growing softer. "But I've had enough of the bullshit. It's about time someone called them out." Her famously near-perfect Italian caught the ears of some of the mechanics who laughed in recognition, knowing how fed up the Australian had been in recent weeks.

"I know, I know," Beata sighed, her stern expression softening into one of understanding. "But you've got to be smart, Mickey. You can't let them get under your skin."

Michaela nodded, her eyes focused on the garage ahead. "I'm not letting them get under my skin. I'm just not going to let them define me anymore." She paused, looking back at her press officer. "You saw the crap I got when I first started. This is nothing."

Beata's expression softened. "You're right. You've come a long way. But we're at the highest level now, and the stakes are higher."

Michaela nodded, her eyes gleaming with determination. "I know. And that's exactly why I'm going to keep pushing back. I've earned my seat here, and I'm not going to let anyone question that anymore."

In commemoration of my very (sur)real adventure to get back to Berlin at night via public transport, in the company of two Finnish fellow guest professors, complete with multiple side-quests and setbacks, here's a little amusing John and Scott thing. Absolutely nothing hurts.

ODYSSEY

It was a truth universally acknowledged that only part of Scott was born on his birthday. The other one arrived as Virgil came to be, making a complete whole.

It was a lesser known fact that Scott and John had their strengths and competences that, while quite far removed in range, complimented each other, so together they formed a formidable unit. For example, John spoke impeccable German. Scott's German was a torturous tangled mess of mixed articles and cases, but was heavily reinforced by a smile and dimples that could charm the socks off a wooden fence. Together they were typically unstoppable on a trip.

None of those interoperable skills were of any use to them at the moment, in the middle of nowhere, Berlin Metropolitan area, approaching midnight. They had one jacket between them, Scott's, which John was currently wearing. Realistically he understood Scott wasn't actually "all good, Johnny, you know I run hot!", but the piercing chill left only the little brother portion of John's brain operational. Nobody could have forseen the German public transport system pulling a kafkaesque trick and sending them on a roundabout commute around Berlin across three to four connection rides by multiple transportation types. Reaching just ever so close but never enough to actually make it to their hotel.

Throwing the vast (one might say - unlimited) supply of money at the problem of getting back to the city from John's guest lecture was also impeded by an unexpected curveball - this late and this far away from the city limits translated into cash only services. Which they hadn't carried on them since about high-school. Their state-of-the-art comms were also rendered useless by the indomitable fact of there simply being no coverage.

Scott suggested walking or hitchhiking, which earned him an unimpressed turquoise glare - John opted out of Rescue Scouts at a tender age of six for a reason, thank you very much! The aforementioned dimples would have probably scored them a ride quite swiftly, but the plan wasn't without its demerits. The most prominent of those being killed by Kayo if she ever found out.

Despite the unfortunate circumstances that were bringing them no closer to the warm and comfortable suite in the Intercontinental, John was glad to be with Scott in this. He always secretly cherished big brother attending his academic talks, the buzz of the crowd fading away in the calming, centering presence. Biggest brother was also in possession of an ability to exhude undefeatable optimism and energetic attitude that, John suspected, he'd cracked up quite a bit for his sake, despite the cold and exhaustion. John felt safe and secure in the notion they would make it home soon no matter what. Scout's honor! Safe enough he actually dozed off on the denim clad shoulder on what was, hopefully, to be the last leg of their ardorous journey by U-bahn, that time.

The unexpected problem arrived as they actually walked the length of the street to the hotel. Of course it did! Intercontinental boasted the security levels vetted by multiple international intelligence agencies. By a strike of cosmic irony, those measures were tweaked up ever so more, because The Scott Tracy and his brother were staying over the week. Which meant a full lockdown past midnight. John audibly groaned. Scott burst into a laugh that was at least part hysteria.

That time it was nothing left for them to do but test the glorified security measures and do a field upgrade of their parcour and scaling skills. The security of Intercontinental foreseeably didn't hold up against two freezing, tired, and hungry Tracies on a mission, but at least, Kayo would have the hotel staff's heads, not theirs.

You might also be a single parent who works hard to give your child the things you never had growing up, and your child sees you as their hero and biggest supporter.

You never forget a kind gesture and always strive to repay others in the same way. “You’d better get into your gear, because I talked to Adam Pearce earlier, and guess who has a shot at the tag team titles tonight with me! Best birthday present ever, huh? See, I didn’t forget about that, either! Happy birthday!”

Liv spontaneously pulls you into a hug with a wide smile on her face, swaying you back and forth. You gladly hug her back, but your brain is still playing catch up with everything she’s just laid out on you.

Laughing softly, you eventually pull back to look at her with a smile on your face that gradually grows once you’ve finally processed that Liv has managed to get you both a tag team title shot together, tonight of all nights.

“Wait, really?!” you ask, your cheeks beginning to ache with how much you’re smiling, “Liv, that’s amazing! Thank you, oh my god-”

“It’s the least I could do for the birthday girl! Come on, you’d better get ready. We’re up soon.”

The time for your match soon rolls around, and although you really should have predicted it would happen, you didn’t expect Dom to be accompanying you and Liv down to the ring. They walk arm in arm down the ramp while you straggle behind them both, and you dismiss the nagging feeling of looking like a spare part from the forefront of your mind.

Adrenaline begins to set in as you watch Alba and Isla make their way down to the ring with Blair trailing behind them to cheer them both on at ringside. You want to prove that you more than deserve this opportunity with Liv, that it means everything to you, that you’re definitely ready for this. And when the match gets underway, that’s exactly what you do.

You and Liv work seamlessly together in the first half, executing the occasional double team move with precision as well as respectively holding your own while you cheer one another on from the apron when you aren’t the legal woman.

“C’mon, (Y/N)! We got this!”

Liv cheers to you from where she stands on the apron, stomping her foot against the steel steps while she attempts to amp you up for a hot tag halfway through the match. You clamber up onto your knees, recovering from a rather heavy hit from Alba, who’s almost made it to her own corner to tag Isla in.

What you don’t see, however, is Dom scrambling up onto the apron to flag the referee down in hopes of providing a distraction, making him miss your opponents’ tag. To an extent, it works, and the referee does miss the initial tag, but it also massively backfires on Dom, too.

Blair, having had enough of his tactics, sweeps Dom’s legs from under him, sending him tumbling to the floor outside the ring. She continues stomping him outside the ring, ensuring that he stays down, and Liv decides that she can’t simply sit back and watch it happen. Liv hops off the apron and charges towards Blair at light speed, forcing her to retreat, all while leaving you in the ring to fend for yourself, the odds now stacked against you.

“Liv, what the- I need you here!”

You yell at her, but she’s too occupied with Dom to even spare a glance towards you, sitting in the corner waiting on her. Alba makes a successful tag to Isla this time around, and they both seize the opportunity to land a devastating double team move on you to put you out for good.

One…two…three!

The bell rings once you’ve taken the fall, and you’re left there in the centre of the ring, staring up at the lights in the arena, processing what had just transpired. Liv left you out to dry mid-match in favour of Dom, and it massively cost you.

When you come to, you roll onto your stomach and slowly crawl to the side of the ring where Liv and Dom still remain outside, with Liv fussing over him. You lean over the bottom rope, prepared to rapid fire questions that sit on the tip of your tongue towards an unsuspecting Liv, but what you hear stops you dead in your tracks.

“It doesn’t even matter, Dom,” she tells him, slowly helping him back up to his feet, “You’re way more important to me than the titles, anyway.”

Liv’s words hit harder than a punch to the gut. After everything you’ve done for her, all the loyalty you’ve shown her right from the very beginning, how could she turn around and say something like that?

Seeing red, you roll out of the ring to stand behind them, fueled by a mix of emotions as you gauge exactly what your next move is about to be. You act purely on impulse, reaching out to Dom first of all to rip him away from Liv before you execute a devastating suplex on him outside the ring. The crowd are behind you all the way as you do, roaring with cheers and an outpour of support for you.

Liv gasps, her eyes wide in shock as she slowly swivels around to face you. She tries to run around the ring from you, but you’re too quick for her. You catch hold of her, and without missing a beat, you deliver a suplex to her outside the ring, too, while the crowd erupts into another bout of cheers as you stand over Liv.

“I didn’t want to believe it, Liv,” your words are full of venom as you spit them at her, “But deep down, I was right. After everything I’ve done for you! Dom’s all that matters to you now, huh?!”

You see the realisation dawn on Liv in that moment, that you’re done with her, that this was the final nail in the coffin for you. You kneel down, becoming more level with Liv as you look her dead in the eyes, your next words final.

“I hope it’s all worth it, Liv. Because I’m done with you.”

So, everyone wants to be happy, but womp womp, so many people walk around all sad and bummed out. With my newfound knowledge from the greatest book ever (The How of Happiness), I’m here to impart my stolen knowledge upon YOU, the reader (and also probably my professor—what’s up, Patrick!—and maybe three strangers who stumble in.) So allow me to give you my stolen knowledge that I'm gonna pass off as my own now. Alright, alright—so what exactly makes us happy statistically, you might be asking? And to that, I say: “Wow, you’re a nerd. You can’t become happy by looking at stats.” But since you’re here, I’ll tell you what happens when you’re statistically HAPPY: so according to the BOOK apparently

-50% of our happiness is hardwired. (Thanks, genetics.) -10% comes from stuff like money and how good-looking you are. (Yeah, being hot helps, but only a little.) -40% is up to us and our choices. (Kinda cliché, but also true!)

You might be lookin at this chart and thinking: “Whoa, hold up—40%? That’s a WHOLE lotta effort. Almost HALF my happiness is determined by ME?!” And guess what? You’re absolutely right. It is.
