no bc ford and bill's falling out is so silly to me because its like. ford's obsession with bill was the closest to "religious" that he's ever tread, and that kind of betrayal was earth shattering and hurt ford in a way he had NEVER been hurt before, causing him to completely mentally and emotionally unravel. meanwhile bill is like "can we talk 🥺" as if he hasn't been using ford for years, and when it became clear ford hated his ass bill got so drunk he forgot his mom was dead. what an INSANE dynamic to establish 8 years after the show ended.

My New Tarot Project: Let Me Read Your Cards!
Believe it or not, I’ve started a kind of Tarot card reading business! It’s something I’ve kind of fallen into since first encountering Tarot cards during our family’s year in Spain. (If interested, you can read about my Tarot journey here, here, here, here, here, and here.) But let me give you the skinny immediately below. To begin with, Tarot cards represent a divinatory tool usually…

Live-threading my thoughts while listening to the Thereafter podcast episode featuring Phil Drysdale
The following is a transcript of the live-thread I posted while listening to Thereafter podcast episode 102.
So the good folks over at @thereafterpodcast dropped a new episode earlier this week. I'm finally finding time to have a listen and post a few thoughts. Let's do this!
.@thepursuinglife: "It's getting a little Driscoll-y here." Worst weather possible. @thereafterpodcast
.@cortlandcoffey is talking about the Power Team, which I had never heard of. Apparently, there's a lot of shit in evangelical culture I was spared from. @thereafterpodcast
Since @cortlandcoffey and @thepursuinglife are talking about Driscoll's reaction at the men's conference over the sword swallower and the figthing it caused, I thought I'd share my comment from a post about the incident over at @friendly.atheist's blog. @thereafterpodcast
Tumblr media
Since I mentioned it, here's a link tot he blog post by @friendly.atheist. @thereafterpodcast
.@thepursuinglife is suggesting the whole incident was a staged event to promote Driscoll's new book about the Jezebel spirit. I'm not sure whether to tease her about being a conspiracy theorist or admit she may be on to something. (Can I do both?) @thereafterpodcast
.@thepursuinglife is talking about the absolute hypocrisy of so-called "pro-lifers" making death threats. Yes, that's a thing. @thereafterpodcast
I'll also mention that I am among those who refuse to call people who oppose abortion as "pro-life." As far as I'm concerned calling them "anti-choice" or "pro forced birth" is more accurate. @thereafterpodcast
.@cortlandcoffey: "These people have never been 'pro-life' outside of the womb." Exactly. And they're not entirely "pro-life" inside the womb. When was the last time you saw a forced-birther advocate for universal healthcare for pregnant people? That'd be life-saving for more than one fetus. @thereafterpodcast
On to the interview with @phildrysdale! @thereafterpodcast
I will note that @phildrysdale doesn't seem to be all that active on Threads anymore. I'll still link to his Threads account in this thread for conveniences. But you might want to check him out someplace where he's more active recently. Such as Instagram @thereafterpodcast
.@phildrysdale says he "did Christianity hard." Insert juvenile boner joke here. (Consider who is posting this thread. What did you expect?) @thereafterpodcast
.@phildrysdale is talking about the difficulty of finding someone you can ask the difficult questions to safely and I feel that. @thereafterpodcast
@cortlandcoffey is asking @phildrysdale why it seems so common for people to leave one high control group to only end up in another one. Interestingly, he seems to be mostly focused on the tendency of some deconstruction spaces' tendencies to be high control at times, and I think that's an accurate thing to be concerned about. @thereafterpodcast
I think @phildrysdale's answer raises some good points. This is also where I'd add to it by going back to "The Authoritarians" by Bob Altemeyer and how he talks about that many authoritarian followers seek authorities as a way to feel safe. So it makes sense that people would often fall back into that habit and seek a new authority to provide a new sense of safety. @thereafterpodcast
Oh, @phildrysdale did get into the "safety through security/following an authority" aspect of things later in his answer! @thereafterpodcast
They're about to get into spiral dynamics. Hopefully they include a definition of what spiral dynamics are, because this is a totally new term for me. @thereafterpodcast
Okay, I love how @phildrysdale just worked a thinly veiled Trump joke into this discussion 23/10. @thereafterpodcast
So spiral dynamics is specifically focused on being a model for how we develop our values? Kinda cool. I definitely want to learn more. @thereafterpodcast
I think I'm starting to see the "spiral" part of spiral dynamics. Very interesting @thereafterpodcast
.@cortlandcoffey is asking @phildrysdale about his perspective on Christian apologists' recent treatment of deconstruction. This should be interesting. @thereafterpodcast
.@phildrysdale indictes that he was interviewed for the book "The Deconstruction of Christianity" in which he provided a lot of data, and none of it made it into the book. Incredibly revealing indeed. @thereafterpodcast
Total tangent: I'm considering watching the video of Greg Locke debating a pastor that believes the earth is flat. From what I've heard, it might be mildly interesting. But I'm not sure how I'll feel about actually thinking Greg Locke is the one in the right. (Well, from what I've heard, he was a total ass by the end of that video, so I'm using "in the right" very loosely here.) @thereafterpodcast
.@phildrysdale has perfectly described the difference between dialogue and most debates. @thereafterpodcast
Interesting. @thepursuinglife's reaction to people asking her what books she should read when deconstructing is essentially the same reaction whens someone asks me what books to read to get into Paganism and/or witchcraft. @thereafterpodcast
.@phildrysdale talks a lot about childhood development and uses examples from that for analogies. It's quite fascinating. @thereafterpodcast
.@phildrysdale is talking about how uncomfortable we can feel when remembering or being confronted with the things we used to believe and do. I can totally relate to that, especially when I consider how those things might have harmed others at the time. I wonder if I ever actively caused someone harm and if they've been able to heal from that since. @thereafterpodcast
I often think of the one young man who was in our youth group who later came out as gay. Was he struggling when I was leading the youth group. And I have to consider how I may have harmed him by what I didn't do. After all, I led that group for two years after I accepted that I was gay, but I never came out. How much comfort might he have found if I had put myself out there back then? @thereafterpodcast
Wow, I don't usually get this introspective and heavy during these live-threads. My apologies. @thereafterpodcast
I will note that my parents have kept in touch with that young man and his family. So I know he's happily partnered (I don't know whether they've formerly gotten married) and quite happy. So I take comfort in that.
In fact, I saw his parents (who I also knew) at my mother's memorial service. That was a pleasant moment, though we didn't get long to talk. @thereafterpodcast
I think that @cortlandcoffey is trying to get at the question of how to develop community with a wide diversity of views and experiences. @thereafterpodcast
.@phildrysdale is talking about the perception of many deconstructing people feeling like they're alone vs. the data. I think it's great to acknowledge that while feelings are always valid, but they're not always an accurate perception of reality. Learning to balance those two truths is important. @thereafterpodcast
Of course, it raises the question: If you're not alone, how do you find the others? @thereafterpodcast
.@phildrysdale just told about a guy who was deconstructing who wanted to meet other people and have them over to his house for a weekly worship session. My mind boggles. @thereafterpodcast
On the topic of finding communities, I'll also suggest that most of us need to find multiple communities in order to meet all our various needs. @thereafterpodcast
Another wonderful episode! @thereafterpodcast

You might not know it these lazy, hazy, muggy days of midsummer, but things are getting pretty wildly out-of-hand in our republic. Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. blew up the Democratic Party yesterday in the House Subcommittee on Weaponization of Government hearing, acting like a normal human while being set upon by a flock of harpies desperately screeching “Russia, Russia, Russia,” as if that means anything anymore. He branded them as worse than the McCarthyites of the 1950s, rebuked their insane scurrilities supporting censorship, and left them in a state of exhausted disgrace.
It happens that he is running for the nomination of that very party knocking itself out to destroy him. To win that prize he would have to put a thousand top Democrats through some grueling act of repentance and contrition — and then you’ve got to ask yourself: who would even want to win the support of such vile creatures as Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Jerrold Nadler, and Adam Schiff, let alone be associated with them in the same club?
Elsewhere around the scene this week, we have the ever more degenerate antics of the FBI on view as whistleblowers pour out of the woodwork disclosing the rot behind Director Chris Wray and his boss AG Merrick Garland. This Deep State Blob of turpitude has been growing and festering with so many overlapping cover-ups that they’ve run out of rugs to sweep their crimes under. The massive money-grubbing misdeeds of Hillary Clinton from Skolkovo and Uranium One beat a direct path through the Ukraine coup of 2014, to Russia-Gate, to the Biden Family’s global influence-peddling operation and every mendacious act in-between including the FISA falsehoods, the J-6 entrapment caper, hundreds of malicious and deceitful prosecutions, the Covid-19 fraud, the censorship and medical tyranny, and God-knows how many ensuing deaths from a poisonous vaccine… and now, a brain-dead government trifling with nuclear war.

Thinking about Percy’s relationship with the Underworld children in comparison to his relationships with the sky children and how it all relates to the hierarchy and experiences Percy has been through.
Yap fest incoming
Now, first of all, Percy is the victim of bullying at home and in school. His bully at home is Gabe and then he has all these bullies at school that pick on him and the other “weird kids” and Percy takes some of the other “weird kids” under his wing and protects them - like Grover and Tyson. Grover because of his crutches and disability and Tyson because of his mental delay and disability.
Percy takes those who can’t protect themselves as well as Percy can protect himself and he protects them from their bullies. Because no one protected him at home - no one was really there to see the abuse, granted, especially because Percy never made it known to his mom that we can tell from the canon material but even if Sally knew of the arguments Gabe and Percy got into, she never left him because she knew he needed Gabe’s scent to keep him safe, but from his pov that might be his mom failing to step in and protect him.
And so he’s not comfortable at home and prefers to be with his mom alone at Montauk. But my point is he doesn’t feel like he belongs at home with Gabe. Then he makes either one or no friends at his schools and then is bullied and blamed for everything before getting kicked out. He never has a place to call his own, to feel as if he belongs. He knows what it is to be judges and to be discarded and deemed unworthy.
And then he arrives at camp full of other kids like him. And while he’s unclaimed, he feels as if he finally finds a place he belongs and begins to make more friends. Then he’s claimed and shoved into a cabin all alone and avoided by all of camp besides Luke, Annabeth, Grover, and Chiron (from what I can remember and even then I’m pretty sure I recall a line about Annabeth barely tolerating his existence because she would always look at him as if he were stupid before ignoring him entirely or something along those lines correct me if I’m wrong).
So he finally finds a place he belongs only that no he really hasn’t because no one wants to touch him with a ten foot pole after being claimed. And then he completes a quest and is welcomed back with open arms - finding his place again. Only for next summer to roll around and Tyson is claimed as his brother as he is once again cast aside by camp for having a monster for a brother.
Then Thalia to comes back and take his place and is then respected and revered after a few months, taken under Chiron’s wing and trained personally by him and looked to for guidance by Annabeth and Grover and just completely respected and idolized despite the fact that she never even made it to camp and never completed a quest - she was just a child of Zeus.
So his place is toppled once more and he has to find where he belongs again. But then Thalia joins the Hunters and he settles back in to his position as sort of “leader” within camp. And he rides that position into war, working his ass off to prove time and time again that he can be trusted and respected like Thalia was.
NOW bringing in the children of the Underworld. Percy and Bianca clashed a bit in the beginning because of the Hunter thing but got over that pretty quick and Percy was somewhat protective of her in the sense that he cared deeply about what she was going through, and promising Nico to look out for her. See: the conversation on the porch of that one shop in New Mexico, Percy’s reluctance to let her go forward with his plan, the multiple lines of Percy blaming himself/saying it should’ve been him instead.
Percy and Nico have an admittedly rocky relationship with the whole Bianca thing and then Nico’s repressed gay crush on him, but they truly did care about each other and I’m sick of the animosity people insist is between them lol. Percy was always protective of Nico (though you only see that after the quest when Annabeth is back safe and sound and his mental state has recovered lmfao) and he took on the prophecy to protect him, everything Percy did was to protect Nico from the traumas of the godly world as best he could. Trying to get Nico to run from the skeletons, searching in the woods for him for hours, claiming the prophecy as his own and hid his identity from the Olympians and Chiron to keep him safe. And thats just in The Titan’s Curse.
Percy and Hazel have the most wholesome relationship out of the three, I will say. Percy is immediately protective of Hazel when he sees Octavian blackmailing and threatening her for her vote for praetor and he grips Riptide in preparation for a fight, reassuring her she wasn’t like Phineas, their conversation in Alaska where they both reassure each other :(( aww I love them sm okay okay let me move on.
Anyways, Percy always takes the Underworld kids under his wing just like he did Grover and Tyson, protecting them and looking out for them as best he can from those who would harm them whether it be bullies like Nancy or Mark or Octavian to prophecies and death. In comparison to his relationships with Thalia and Jason where they clash horribly before finding middle ground and becoming friends eventually.
And then the hierarchy between the big three kids where children of Hades/Pluto were always avoided like the plague and feared and seen as a bad omen and can work their asses off and fight endlessly for camp but will still only be seen as children of H/P by most. While children of Poseidon/Neptune make people wary but dont bring respect. I think theres also a hint of fear because of how powerful and temperamental P/N is and how that could transfer over along with P/N being known as the “father of monsters”. And Percy has to work his ass off to prove himself time and time again before being trusted and looked up to the way Percy is. And then theres children of Zeus/Jupiter who are completely and immediately revered and respected whether or not they’ve done anything of note simply because of who their father is.
Anyways all this yapping to say that Percy definitely sees himself in the Underworld kids and takes them under his wing to protect them as best he can while simultaneously arguing and fighting with children of Z/J because he sees his bullies in them simply from the hierarchy and power imbalance between the cousins (“power imbalance” being used loosely here). This is also no Thalia or Jason hate btw,, just character study I guess. I love Thalia and Jason is. There. I guess. (Kidding. He’s a cool character and concept but def not my fav lol)

something i like about nona's family is that they're so like, almost a perfect little nuclear family, and then just. not.
like. pyrrha is "the person who works for her" but also the one who makes breakfast and does the dishes. she's a woman quite literally posessing the body of a cis man and really leaning into the look, honorarily trans in both directions, working construction and shaving in the mornings and braiding nona's hair before school.
and then there's camilla, her...nagging wife? troublemaking older child? roomate who she barely gets along with? the fact that palamedes shares this role is doubly weird. he's a man literally posessing the body of a cis woman, and they're both pyrrha's nagging wife/problem child/roomate. i don't personally believe that anything explicitly or overtly sexual was happening between her and either of them, but i completely understand where people who think that are coming from. and it's fucking weird (affetionate?).
even nona occupies a weird place in this dynamic. like. pyrrha is definitely a parent to her but camilla, who takes a much more active role in her daily life, is...idk. nona has a crush on her and wants to marry her and adopt dogs. camilla's feelings for nona are more parental or older-sisterly, in that she cares for her and wants to protect her, and if her feelings are more complicated than that, it's because of the obvious aspects of the situation which make her extremely sad and apprehensive of the future. her affection for nona seems relatively simple.
and then there's palamedes, who is in theory another parental figure (see: camilla's "i'll talk to your mother later" face, or pyrrha's "you're going to make someone a really irritating wife one day, sextus"), but in nona's view of things he seems like something more along the lines of an older sibling, or perhaps a cool uncle, which is funny because pyrrha arguably treats him more like a spouse than she does camilla.
it's all just so fucking weird and jumbled up on itself. pyrrha will kiss camilla on the head and say "i'll be home for dinner, dear," and then turn around and call both her and nona "daddy's own treasures" (don't get me started). she'll kiss palamedes and camilla both on the mouth and tell them she loves them. she'll tell them she didn't love them well, or even wholesomely, and she won't explain what she means by wholesome.
alecto calls her "mother and father." alecto tells her she should've given into her urges and eaten them.
palamedes and camilla are second cousins and queerplatonic and married and the same person and by the start of the book the lines between them are already dissolving.
nona is so so young and she's so so old and she's not so much younger than camilla and she's older than pyrrha can even comprehend and some days she needs help getting her shirt over her head.
and most importantly they all love each other. it's a weird and confused and unhealthy love. it's a love full of tension and annoyance and fear. it's a love that wants very badly to fit a category and can't. but it's love it's love it's love and even when it's over even when it has nowhere left to go it's not gone it can't be gone. it's over it's done you can't take loved away.

sometimes I go a little crazy and imagine the complex grief Neteyam would have gone through had Spider died in place of him.
the grief that comes with losing your best friend and big brother—
because that's what he was. long ago, when you were little kids, and he still was now, even though you pushed him away, the bond never died, you just abandoned it, and it would be hard, but if you walked up to him he would have taken you back in a heartbeat, arms wide and open and warm, burying his own hurt to keep you close. and you know that. you know he would have, but you never did. you never went back, because it would sting, it would press on old wounds, and it would have upset your parents and your clan and... and you weren't brave enough for that.
—but you couldn't call him that.
he was different than you. a human. a demon. an outcast. quietly removed from you and your home and the forest and your family and your siblings and your clan and even the other humans.
because he was different.
he was unloved by your people. and now a foreign stranger in your new home. they hold no love or memory or any sympathy for him that went past basic compassion and sadness for a child, if even that. he was nothing to them. they did not know he was good. that he was kind. that he was strong. that he would have done anything for his siblings, even you, with all your faults. they did not know.
and you're the perfect eldest child in their eyes, not a boy who would have curled up in the protection of that human boy's arms in an instant if you weren't afraid of being judged. they don't know the conflict that lives in your heart and mind. they don't understand you the way he did, even in his silent watch over you, for all those years you wouldn't call him brother, but he still loved you like one. they don't understand anything about you and what you keep under your facade of a young warrior, eldest son of the Sully's, mature and wise for your age. they don't know that you needed him, you just didn't know how to get him back.
and now no one around you— not even your siblings who will long hold a degree of animosity towards you, no matter how small or subconscious, for all the years they watched you ditch them in favor of duties and push Spider away instead of being their brother, making them a quartet and not a quintet, forcing that awkward tension on them that they'll always have to remember —understands your loss.
not your parents or your new clan, not even your old one will. not your friends or your siblings. not even you.
none of them will understand that he mattered to you. that under the illusion of not needing him or wanting him or considering him family like your siblings did. of seeing him as your mother did, a demon who belonged with his own kind. or passively letting him float in and out of your life because you had bigger, better, more important duties to fulfill, and settling on in or out was too hard. or that when you saw him play and goof off and mess around with your siblings, you wanted to join. or that this entire time in this new home, with things ever so slightly getting better with Lo'ak, you wished he was there too, so maybe things would finally be good.
the friend, the brother, the protector, the shield, the warm smile and golden hair and barking laugh and ever beckoning hand, begging you to join him on an adventure you once knew, is dead. he is dead and gone, and with him died every chance you might have had to fix it. and you will live with your guilt for life, and the fear that comes when you don't have your big brother to look out for you anymore.
and no one understands his grief. he is alone in it. he will feel like a stranger, overstepping a boundary he placed. and he is scared because his big brother is gone. everything he has to face, he has to face scared and alone.
he will be shut out of his siblings grief, just out of how their relationship with one another and Spider was, because their bond is too strained, and he missed out on so much time with them and with Spider and them as a whole. he doesn't fit with their grief.
his parents will want to support him and love him, but Spider mattered very little to them. they were the reason Neteyam pulled away to begin with. Spider wasn't his brother in their minds. they could never support him the way he needed.
the Metkayina, no matter their love or care or sympathy for Neteyam, can't help either.
he is alone. living with his grief. with his regrets. with his pain. it's overwhelming and all consuming. and he will continue to try and act like everything is fine, because he doesn't know what else to do.
they make me fucking insane

Hero Whump Imagine
Hero whumpee who is loved by their team but they are always treated like they're so delicate and fragile, like they can't do anything too dangerous after what happened to them, what if they get hurt again? The team can't lose them. Hero feels like no one trusts them with anything anymore. What's the point of being on the team if they never contribute or do anything useful? This only fuels Hero's delusions about being the weak link of the group, maybe it would be better if they did just stay inside all the time, it's not like their team needs them or anything...
Superhero caretaker/leader who loves Hero to a fault. They're overprotective. They feel responsible for what happened to Hero, and they will do anything to make sure it doesn't happen again. Hero understands, right? Even if they don't, Superhero is sure they will eventually.
Should I write this? I should write this... someone remind me to write this.

Since I made my post about my strong feelings about Buck and Chimney being parallels, I figure I may as well make a post about my equally strong feelings about how Maddie and Eddie parallel each other and that I, like many other 911 fans, would kill for a good Eddie and Maddie scene. And yeah, obviously we all want a scene about them discussing Buck, but I also kinda just want them bonding over similar experiences like I want for Buck and Chimney.
To begin with, they're both older siblings who were forced to grow up too fast and basically raised their younger sibling(s); Eddie we know was expected to be "the man of the house" and Maddie kept Buck alive for the first few years of his life or more less.
The obvious connection is that they both have a long history of running either as a way to fix their problems or to escape them. Maddie ran from home to Boston with Doug, ran from Doug to LA to get away from him, and ran from Chimney and Jee-yun when her post partum got really bad. Eddie ran from his first marriage and family by joining the army, ran (arguably) from Texas to LA, ran from the 118 to dispatch when Chris was scared for his safety and he was having his mental health crisis, and has ran from almost every romantic relationship he's ever had. They also have their own PTSD issues, Eddie with his from being in the army and Maddie from her abusive marriage.
Circling back to their families though, there's also the element that Maddie and Eddie are both heavily judged by their parents and lacked their support. Not just in the growing up sense -though still very much that- but that fact that instead of trying to help Eddie with Chris his parents tried to take him away, and instead of trying to help Maddie get out of her abusive marriage to a man they disliked the Buckley's cut her off and ignored her. And, of course, both their parents make digs about their marriages after the fact.
I feel like the Maddie running from Jee-yun because she was scared of being a bad mother and scarring her daughter for life and Eddie running from Shannon and Chrisopher is such an interesting comparison. Their fear of not being good enough as parents, which is being reflected in Eddie's whole return to Texas arc, is a really interesting parallel that I want to see them discuss and like support each other in. Cause, like, no one understands the feeling of not feeling like you're good enough to take care of your kid after accidentally hurting them more than Maddie Buckley-Han.
Building off that, I feel like Maddie got her own little choosing joy arc when she decided to date Chimney after leaving Doug, and again after Doug's death. She was absolutely making the choice to be happy instead living in fear of getting into another abusive relationship.
And outside of the sadder aspects of their similarities, there are also the brighter aspects too. Despite their mental health issues and past regretful decisions, they're both such happy and honestly really goofy people who care so very deeply for everyone around them. They both have a guarded streak a mile wide, but once that's down you're kinda in for life.
I genuinely feel the fanfic dynamic of Eddie and Maddie having a quiet wine night in while Buck and Chimney are off doing insane, goofball stuff is so real and tangible if the writers just put it in. There's such an untapped well with these four characters interacting amongst each other that I really want to see onscreen and absolutely thrive off reading in fanfic.
