What are your thoughts on/the reasoning behind sub Satoru in FIYM?

aye aye captain i shall yap about this

obligatory: this a subjective interpretation, these are character choices i am making because i think they are compelling and explore themes that i like. probably don't psychoanalyze real life people through their sexual preferences.

okay, time to psychoanalyze gojo satoru through his sexual preferences -

so, something i have seen and heard is that powerful people are subs. 'power' here can mean any type of power, but generally this is connected to a person's societal position. this is maybe somewhat true (here's one study on s/m specifically - note the diff between men and women, i think this makes sense due to m/f social positionality, but clearly there's a lot of nuance and variance here), but it's certainly not a definitive relationship. but whether it is or is not generally true, i think it's a very interesting way to frame characters.

d/s is about control. so what do our characters want out of 'control'? who wants to be in control, and why? in the case of powerful people being submissive, I see it as both a release (from responsibility, from expectation) and a taboo (acting improper, doing the forbidden). on the flipside, with weaker people being dominant, it's a catharsis (getting reparations/payback against the power structure) and also a taboo (daring to step out of line/wield power).

Why is Satoru a Sub?

gojo satoru is a submissive for all of the above reasons. his position in the gojo clan, the responsibility that comes with it, and the expectation that he is a distant, untouchable god - is something he resents. he goes against this directly by being brash and irreverent. he shows a lot of aggression (socially, also combat wise) and energy, but this is not a real substitute for closeness.

and of course, as an adult -

what satoru wants is an equal - someone to share the burden with, someone on his level, someone he can trust. geto is certainly that, in canon. geto is the only one he trusts to truly watch his back. later, he'll trust people like shoko and yuta with contingency plans. he trusts nanami and kusakabe to look after the kids, and he trusts the kids to prevail after he's done his part (or at least, he's made peace with the fact that he's done all he can for them).

but there is never anyone else who stands beside him.

now, to go a little further, I think that what satoru actually wants is someone he can defer to.

not only can he share the load with suguru, he can also take a step back and give it entirely to suguru. and he can do this because suguru is not only strong, he has very strong principles. the focus on suguru's philosophy in Hidden Inventory - to me - is an indicator that satoru really wanted suguru to be 'the strongest', so that suguru could lead and he could follow.

now, unfortunately, suguru got The Trauma and found a way to justify genocide, so satoru had to nope out of that. but that's my read of canon: gojo satoru has been forced into a role of ultimate authority since birth, and he desperately wants out.

(this is a big driver of the jujutsu clan politics side plot in FIYM as well)

one other thing i'll add on the physical side of things - satoru's oversensitivity could really go either way. either he wants to have very precise control over what he is feeling to prevent overstimulation (dom leaning), or (the road we are taking) he wants someone else to push his body beyond his instinctive limits (sub leaning).

Bonus: Why is Satoru a M?

in 2sorcs ch 13, I do also veeeeeery briefly gloss over my Gojo Satoru is a Masochist headcanon. this is because he is a freak with a battle boner. and also something something Six Eyes - touch starved - seeking stimulation even if it's not necessarily pleasure. being hurt is another taboo for him, first because he's the strongest and second because of infinity.

Bonus: Why is Suguru a Dom?

actually, he's not. (in FIYM)

suguru is a switch. (in FIYM x2). lettuce 🥬 return to the concept:

...with weaker people being dominant, it's a catharsis (getting reparations/payback against the power structure) and also a taboo (daring to step out of line/wield power)...

suguru is extremely societally weak in FIYM. his past is extremely bleak (homeless, abused, cut off connections to family), and his present is extremely precarious (no clan backing, controversial technique). so if you followed this, then suguru lends himself to being a dom, yes.

however, this only really makes sense when the weak person is domming a strong person. and in terms of the physical power dynamic between satoru and suguru, satoru is not the stronger one. physically, due to the six eyes and satoru's lack of experience, suguru sees satoru as extremely vulnerable, so there's no societal/positional catharsis. he's extremely worried about overstepping satoru's boundaries (which satoru doesn't even want to set, which makes suguru worry even more).

obviously, with suguru's past, he cares a lot about consent. but even when it is given, he's worried that satoru doesn't actually know his limits, and won't know when to say no because of his inexperience and his overenthusiasm/wanting to please suguru.

(and satoru is also worried about this from his end, because he is worried about the societal power difference between them (the uncertainty principle) making suguru go along with things even if he doesn't want them (2sorcs ch 14)).

anyway, all this to say - suguru is not particularly compelled to dom satoru - he is a switch. he is filling the role that satoru is asking for, but he would also be perfectly happy to give control to satoru as well. i don't think that FIYM suguru would trust anyone else enough to be a sub, but with satoru, he knows that he's not in any real danger of being emotionally/sexually abused/manipulated, so he's down.

actually, we will see a little bit of dom satoru later in FIYM. here is the tiniest of snips as your reward, kind anon (and anyone else who made it to the end) - thank you for letting me yap.

Hi I just realized this is my first ask EVER but please please I need R crumbs(M is my obsession but R is a close 2nd) So like pre-FWB (maybe this causes the agreement to happen) but R smuggles in something for MC’s job and deals with a snarky MC who for some reason won’t just say thank you, but also can’t pay them the amount that R wants (I put so much thought into this buckle up)

remember this M x medic!MC scenario i wrote recently? somewhere in there, M asks MC how they got all the stuff to tend to their wounds so quickly, and MC said that "Marek knows someone".

that someone is, of course, R heh. MC hasn't met R yet but Marek works with R a lot to get things he needs for M and MC. like you said, for medic!MC for example, R gets Marek medical supplies, Marek pays, then he gives them to MC. though Marek is quite fond of R, he doesn't really want them to meddle with MC, just because R does some pretty dangerous and reckless stuff sometimes to get what they need, and Marek doesn't want MC to get roped into things like that. so he's tried his best over the years to make sure they don't meet!

Edwin had done it. 

For years, Kik had watched as he’d tried to find a way to separate the Gift from the Gifted, a way to single out the Gift itself for further research and testing. Proof that, maybe, there was more than just the ‘natural’ in our world. And at every turn, the project had avoided comprehension, as if baiting him, pushing him to madness. But this time… This time, it seems that it might have actually worked.

He could hardly believe it, staring in awe at the little ball of pure light hovering in the center of the mason jar he had Kik fill with little pieces of aluminium foil– twisted tightly into rods– in any hope to catch electricity, any semblance of energy and power. He’d wrangled together a rudimentary machine that would spin vials of collected blood– from his lovely assistant and niece– to automate part of the process of mixing the blood. The process required a speed and force he could not generate himself due to the density of the specimen he was working with. As it spun the blood, the force required– called the centrifugal force– separated the liquid of the blood, which would theoretically allow him to harvest the energy of the Gift from the blood itself, as the evaporation of the blood would allow him to extract what he wanted. And hopefully, in harvesting that Gift, producing something like electricity.

And against every odd, staring back at him is a victory that smells like sweet tangerines, like pine trees and cold forest.  It buzzes, glowing light gold and filling the room with its soft, warm ambience. Like sunshine after rain, like the break of dawn over a cold night, the entire room felt dark in the light of the little gold light. Edwin reaches, hesitant, before laying a finger on the glass. The result is instant: peace disturbed, energy striking the glass and finding a body, conducting and flying towards it, zapping the man like a bolt of electricity. Edwin stumbles back, wincing at the shock and trying to stop his hands from spasming. He looks down and finds that his hands now glow in dark red light, arcing and wrapping around his hands, bending with his fingers. Furrowing his brows, he experimentally moves his hands, finding that the Gift in his hands fit like ill-fitting gloves. Cumbersome and unnatural, it was not his. But… he could wear it. Use it, just not as well. 

Oh. Oh.

A slow, satisfied smile curves onto his cruel face. It’s unnatural, but only because Edwin Wright rarely found something that filled him with genuine glee. This was a breakthrough of incredible size, he could harness the power of the supernatural, he could turn water into wine– cultivate power. If he was a bug in a world of giants, now he had a stinger. He turns, glancing back to see where Katherine had gotten off to, and pleasantly surprised to find them standing a few paces behind him. Dutiful, compassionate child that they were, the perfect assistant and specimen. As he had raised them to be, but Katherine was a particularly gentle creature.  If only they weren’t so headstrong, so difficult to control. If only he could trust them, control them reliably��� An idea comes to mind, one to solve the issue that had been causing conflict in this home recently. This power had given him a stinger, yes, but… it could be a web, should he desire.

Katherine leans to peer around Edwin, a few paces behind him, watching the light in the jar dance. They frown as they squint at the odd, sporadic arcing of the Gift bouncing off of the aluminium and hitting the glass. Dread was settling in their stomach as the realization set in that this was enough to prove all of his theories. This could prove, reliably, that some children were magic, and Kik knew that would be dangerous beyond reckoning. And yet, they couldn't help but lean forward, trying to get a better look at it, curious about the way it moved and twisted and radiated warmth. They shrink back, however, meekly smiling, when he turns around and fixes them with a knowing, esurient stare. He steps forward, and Katherine steps back without thinking, raising their hands defensively. He follows, snatching them by the arm and pulling them closer, his other hand clamping around their bicep roughly, caging their shoulders in his grip. 

“Well, Katherine, it seems like all our hard work has paid off.” He grins at the girl, watching as they begin to try and pull away from him. He grips harder, ignoring the way Katherine hisses in pain, and twists them to look at the jar. They notice that the jar is now filled with dark red light. “It’s just a taste of what you’ve got, but that’s alright. You’re a very powerful little lady. This is more than enough to prove that I can single it out, which is what’s important. That it can be harvested, taken. Although… this next part is gonna stay between you and me.”

He takes a deep breath, feeling the power pour through his body. The smell of oranges turns sour and bitter– rotting lemons and lime. Edwin pulls Katherine closer, lifting their arm to show sickly red light twisting around their wrists, drawing their attention to the strings now connecting them to Edwin. They gasp, the air squeezed from their chest, and look down. They find their chest glowing in red light as the magic ties itself around their ribs, around their spine, tightening painfully. Edwin drops Kik’s arms, letting them slump forward and wrap their arms around their chest. They drop to their knees, choking back a sob.

“My dear niece, my Katherine, my perfect specimen, you’ve proven just how very, very useful you are.” His tone is sing-songy, all the while he balls his hand into a fist and tugs, and Katherine gasps again, on the edge of crying out. 

“W-wait, what–” They choke out, clutching at their chest. They pull at the strings looping around them, but new knots form wherever they untangle them. Confusion and fear twists in their gut as they frantically try to get out of the web. Something about the way Edwin is looking at them makes them feel sick. The softness they recall in his eyes when they were younger, the smile that pulled at his lips when he saw them– they’d been replaced. Something colder, sharped, and hungrier filled its place. They don’t understand what he’s doing, why he’s gotten so violent. “Uncle, you’re– you’re hurting me–”

“I can’t have you running away anymore, you have to understand. But I know that you can’t live trapped in a little house forever. Poor little bird, caged and sad with no room to stretch their little wings. I do still care, Katherine, I do. I just need you to cooperate. But I think I have a solution to our problem.” Crouching, Edwin tilts his head, lifting Kik’s chin by grabbing it, smiling when Kik meets his eyes again. He tightens the strings with a cold sort of finality, knocking the air from Katherine’s lungs as their magic is bound under his own. “Try not to think about it like you’re losing something, because you aren’t. If anything, these will allow you more freedom. Now I can enforce the rules! Now I can make sure you can’t get yourself into trouble! This will be better for us, I promise, Kitty.”

He sighs, watching the horrified expression on his niece’s face. “You and I, kid? We’re stuck together. I need you, Kitty Cat, and, honestly, you need me! Who else is going to take care of you? I’m all the family you have left, and you’re still just a little thing. You need someone to teach you how to navigate this world– especially because you’re so special. Now, there’s no more running away. No more fighting. Now there’s only you and I.” Another smile, a little less sharp, and Katherine resists the urge to scream. They want to fight and claw and bite and tear– anything to get out of here– but they are shackled to Edwin with their own Gift. 

The last part of any family they had left, and yet Katherine does not recognize their Uncle at all anymore. Ever since he found that Black Book, ever since he saw their father die, he’d been obsessed with the darkness and monsters, and this obsession was ruining both of their lives. This was only keeping either of them from actually living, from doing anything more than twisting themselves up in a game they could never win. Katherine had at least had the hope of one day escaping, of maybe somehow convincing him to stop–

But… they weren’t sure he was in there anymore. Once, a long time ago, now, they thought he had hung the stars in the sky himself, that he was the most impressive and incredible researcher to ever walk the earth. They had helped him as a child with research willingly, interested in what he was doing and excited to be included and involved. He had held them in his lap, explained the stories and the worlds in the pages he was reading, made a game out of finding what details they were researching. In front of them was nothing more than a shell of the man who had been there when Katherine’s mother left, when their father died… The ghost of a once-great man, now somehow the biggest monster of all. 

In a moment of pure exhaustion, Kik Wright gives in, and faints.

*walks back into BATFAMILY fic fandom eleven months later, holding a Starbucks cup* I'm right on time, I don't know what you mean. AND I have returned with the fruits of a fandom that continues to be incredible at providing the good stuff! Sometimes it's still hard for me to grasp just how much fic has exploded onto the scene in the 10+ years I was away from DC, that there was some incredible fic back when I was into the fandom, but coming back to actual mountains of it has continued to blow my mind every time and made me love these characters even more than I already did.

LaDS Fanfic & Lore Resource

I am documenting all of the Love and Deepspace lore over on GitHub!

I'm using a free mapping program called Obsidian that's basically a red string board in app form. Everything!! is connected!! The lore is so detailed and it's been so satisfying to go through.

So far, I have the main story up through Long Awaited Revelry, plus all anecdotes and the Beyond Cloudfall myth. I wanted to go ahead and share even though it's WIP since I've already made so many interesting connections.

For example, the format is still a bit rough but this Main Story Timeline gives an approx month/year for every event in the main story. Based on multiple sources, the main story almost certainly starts in July 2048!

GitHub/Obsidian are easy to set up if you have a basic coding background, but I know it's not the most accessible. If there's enough interest, I'll consider paying to host it through Obsidian so it's more of a normal web page, it's not too expensive! You can still click around and read the project in GitHub, but the document links won't work.

If you maintain a wiki, please feel free to use anything from this project! Mainly why I didn't contribute to a wiki is I wanted to add a lot of commentary along the way, as well as only really tracking what's important for fanfic/lore theories. Take any commentary with a grain of salt, as I'm consistently updating it as I bring new pieces in.

Since the storytelling of the game is pretty non-linear, my hope is also that the summaries of the main story and anecdotes help folks more easily understand the story. The game likes to be mysterious at first, but it often becomes quite clear once all the pieces are revealed.

One of my favorite things about the lore is that it follows romance conventions more than sci-fi conventions, so "because love" is the reason behind a lot of canon decisions 🥹 But there's still a lot of sci-fi to enjoy!

Anyway, I hope you'll forgive me for the WIP and I hope this reaches the other folks who are as obsessive about the lore as I am!

I want to write about an Aaron who had to walk a bit of Andrew's road (being an outlaw), but still with Aaron's personality.

Nora wrote this really moving post about how she feels about Aaron and that last line really haunts me - "He buried his anchor deep and held tight to it".

I think Aaron and Neil have a lot in common: both living undercover and both being ruthless in a claws-come-out-for-a-second-then-disappear kind of way. Thanks to Neil I'm convinced hate can be a very important part of healing. And it's practically Aaron's superpower. But maybe it was something Aaron had to learn? He starts off unable to hate his abuser, unable to lay blame where it belongs.

So I try to imagine Aaron having to deal with being on the wrong side of the law, taking more of an active role in seeking revenge... but still battling drugs, still trying to blend into the background and act normal... maybe showing his hate and bitterness in more physical ways than we saw with our Aaron.

And because he's Aaron, he's doing it all for his brother and a small spark of hope that there's something in the world besides hate.

so truthfully .. lore is gonna be REALLY difficult to explain for ENA because the game itself is so nonsensical? she doesn't really have lore herself other than theories! the whole world is just random characters doing random things 😭 so dolly is in a similar boat!

the only confirmed notes I have lore wise are:

she's the companion to my dear friend's ENA-sona (which is why she's named similarly to the other companions to the other ENAs! Moony, Froggy ... Dolly!)

in Dream BBQ she's another entity -- she claims she "is the boss" that ENA is looking for, ENA denies that, and she goes to give a job for her -- to find her harp strings (her chest is actually made of a harp!)

I'd like to think she'd come back in later chapters of the game, but rn only chapter one is out!

As for their dynamic...

I like all my silversonas to play into an aspect of myself and my story. SUsona is a story about strength and what it means to be strong, DVCsona is a story about identity despite your past, and for ENA... I want our story to be about evolution. To reinvent yourself over and over again, even when it hurts, even when you don't want to. So our dynamic will probably go more into that theme

ENA at her core is a worker -- a metaphor for masking in customer service fronted jobs, actually. her red side (her "salesman") persona is cordial, logical, courteous, while her blue side (her "meanie" side) is a lot more blunt -- but both sides very clearly insinuate that she both LOVES to work while also desperate for freedom

(one of my favorite clips for her switching personalities lol, very short but shows how quickly she switches between personas!)

Dolly on the other hand, is very much a free spirit. Characters in the game sometimes speak a different language while still having English subs -- Dolly is the same, sometimes speaking in Esperanto, and also sometimes just... not speaking! You'll hear random instruments play instead of a voice (my fav example being an out of tune tuba, but also think woodblocks, music box clashing chords, a baritone opera singer...). Her gimmick is music and she solely wants to create--a direct counter to ENA, who soley wants to service

I'd like to think they'd learn off each other and find they're both more than what they think they are, or have new traits they never would even considered. HOWEVER. it's very hard without the other chapters being out yet 😭😭😭

They're a silly couple with lots of banter, and Dolly has similar (if slightly different) relationships to both sides as both sides do bring out slightly different sides of HER. she gets quieter and firmer around the meanie persona, and more ditsy and silly around the salesman persona.

I think that's all I have on them rn 😭🧡 they're definitely more of a "aww, look at them !!" couple rather than a lore -filled story due to the nature of the game, but I love them just as dearly nonetheless
