I think so many people are so deeply alienated from themselves that they have no clue how to exercise their free will and autonomy. For some, this alienation runs so deep that they are afraid of their own autonomy and humanity. It is completely understandable why one would have those feelings, but it can be worrisome.
I want to help others who feel this way, so here are small things I have done to exercise my free will:
Add "guilty pleasure" songs to playlists and actually listen to them (I have a ton of late 1990s-early 2000s music I listen to now proudly that I never listened to in the past out of shame)
Getting the décor item, bath set, bed spread, ect. in the patterns you like, even if it's "childish" (I got a dinosaur-themed wastebasket from the kids' décor section and I adore it)
Taking a new route to get to a place you go to often
Eat dessert first
Celebrate well, and often
Collect things that are "odd" or don't seem like an "acceptable" thing to collect (somebody on my "for you" page collects dandelion crayola crayons and it was so cool!!!!!!)
Incorporate one new piece in an outfit you wear frequently (e.g., a new chain, a necklace, ribbons, bracelets, ect.). Challenge yourself to add onto the outfits if you feel up for it.
Sing along to songs without worrying that you sound "good" or your intonation is completely accurate
Read a book from a genre you weren't allowed to read as a kid (comics, thrillers, mysteries, anything!)
Walk without having a specific destination or goal
Pick up a new craft without expecting yourself to master it or to ever be "good" enough. Get your hands messy.
I don't want to shame anybody for not feeling as though they have free will or that they are exempt from exercising it. However, I wanted to give ideas so that you might read this list and find your own ways to express your intrinsic autonomy and will. You deserve to be a person, to feel alive, not just living. That is what our lives are for.

In Regards To Your 2024 Summary:
Holy shit it’s been another year????? The hell?????
Also! Your art style is gorgeous and that being found in 2023 and then refined throughout late 2023 and the entirety of 2024 really shows, as does your growth in panel layouts, perspective, and — as you said — experimentation. If you ever post your animation or video game art I’m looking forward to it.
As cheesy as it sounds, being able to laugh at funny comics and look at all the details of your art really made my 2024 brighter, even when things were hard. Including looking at your older art— it doesn’t need to be new to be enjoyable! I’m glad your art is well loved and it’s a privilege to have been here since the (near) beginning. I hope you take care of yourself in 2025 and beyond!

Thank you so much for keeping up with my art journey throughout these last two years! Two years!!! I am baffled at how that feels both too long and too short!
Admittedly, my art summary didn't manage to capture the fact that I did a lot of comic layouts that I'm really proud of. I also drew more backgrounds and made some very detailed works (*Dungeon Meshi spoilers for these examples*).
The growth is lot more evident when comparing my 'best' comics of 2023 to 2024:
Sometimes the growth is vertical, sometimes it is horizontal - and damn, sometimes it goes out of sight into the Z-plane. But it is always happening!

Liliana telling Imogen, "You know how much I miss just taking care of those horses? You know how much I dream of just walking the fields and making breakfast at sunrise? All that was taken from me" really brings to mind something that Laudna said to Imogen in episode 49:
"If you wish to have a quiet life in a cozy cottage in a field, raise horses and just be, no gods or fates or destiny can keep you from that."
That's the crux of why Liliana's argument fails to be convincing. Laudna is right--at any moment in this journey, Imogen could have decided she didn't need to do this and found a cottage to settle down in. At any point in 14-16 years of wandering Exandria before finding the Verity, Liliana could have gone home and had all the things she feels were "taken" from her. But she didn't, and that was her decision, not the fault of the gods, or Predathos, or any other force she thinks kept her away. She decided she needed answers more than that cozy life she loved so much. Foisting the responsibility of that decision does not erase that it was hers

(If you're not planing to write it already) Like how would they feel with mc's job as a hunter? I feel like during this time they might have a little argument since zayne probably would want her to take a break from her job the moment they found out y'know since her job is very pyhsical and the risks of harming the baby but mc might be a little bit stubborn about it? imagine her fainting during her mission because of fatigue and how would zayne's reaction to it be? (maybeee just a little tiny bit of angst? but definitely with a happy ending cause i can't handle sad ending, you can add a bit of smut too if you want hohoho) I'm sorry if this is too hard for you to write 😭 anyway thank you for all the amazing stories, i'm looking forward to read more of your writings! 🥰

Zayne closes his tablet with a soft click, his gaze already on you. He doesn’t say anything. Just looks.
You shut the door a little harder than necessary when you step back into Zayne’s office, the familiar scent of disinfectant and tea grounding you just enough not to explode. He’s still seated at his desk, calm as ever, reading one of his medical cases.
You just finished a call with the HQ.
“They’re not letting me work in the field anymore,” you huff, dropping into the seat across from him. “But if I really want to work, I can be support from base. You know—report duty, logistics, the fun stuff.”
You narrow your eyes. “Don’t give me that look.”
“I didn’t say anything,” he replies mildly, folding his hands like he’s a neutral party in a murder trial. “But if I had, I might’ve said this was predictable.”
“I know it’s not possible,” you groan, tipping your head back. “And I don’t want to be in the field anyway. I’m not trying to hurt our baby.”
He reaches for your hand, which you take immediately.
“But they didn’t have to say it like that,” you go on, toying with his fingers. “Like I’m fragile. Like I need to be wrapped in bubble wrap and locked in a temperature-controlled room.”
“They didn’t say that,” Zayne points out, far too calmly.
“That’s what they meant.”
He raises an eyebrow. “Did they also say it in a tone you invented for them?”
You shoot him a look. “You’re very smug for someone who’s supposed to be on my side.”
“I am on your side,” he says smoothly, standing up and walking over to you. “Which is why I’m supporting your decision to, what was it? Rot behind a desk with a highlighter and a clipboard?”
You groan again, burying your face in his stomach. “Don’t remind me.”
He chuckles, then leans down slightly, his cool fingers brushing a strand of hair from your forehead. “They’re not saying you’re useless. You’re not.”
Your hands wrap around him. “I’m not.”
He tilts his head. “Then stop talking like you are.”
You purse your lips, stubborn, but you can’t hold the tension when he leans down, voice dipping just enough to soften the blow:
“You’re still you. Even if you’re not kicking down doors right now.”
That gets a small breath of laughter out of you, even as you lean your head back against the chair again.
“...I’m still going to complain,” you mutter.
“I wouldn’t expect anything less,” Zayne murmurs, brushing a kiss to your temple. “But next time you get assigned report duty, I’ll make tea.”
You glance at him. “...With the good honey?”
He smiles faintly. “Only if you stop acting like being careful is a personal insult.”
You snort.

The hum of the squad’s base is a quiet background drone—keyboards tapping, screens flickering, comms static fading in and out. You’re perched at the long center table, elbow-deep in reports you’d rather not be writing, a stylus clutched in your aching fingers.
Tara walks by with a cup of something steaming and suspiciously sweet-smelling. She pauses when she sees you still working.
“You’re aware no one’s asking you to finish all those today, right?” she says, eyeing your growing stack. “Unless you’re aiming for a stress-induced birth.”
“I’m behind,” you mutter, not looking up. “Someone’s gotta get them done.”
“You mean besides the two rookies we literally hired for this?”
“They’re slow.”
“They’re new.”
“They’re too new.”
Tara sips her drink and squints. “You know this is your villain origin story, right? ‘Hunter turns paperwork tyrant after desk job.’”
You give her a withering look. She grins and walks away.

Later, Lara leans in behind you without a sound, placing a small snack packet next to your elbow.
You blink. “What’s this?”
“Protein and fiber,” she says with that calm smile of hers. “You skipped lunch just because your husband isn’t here to give it to you.”
“I did not—”
“You took two bites of toast and drank a coffee.”
You frown down at the packet. “I’m not hungry.”
Lara just squeezes your shoulder. “Doesn’t mean you shouldn’t eat.”

The next day, you’re rearranging case logs and editing mission summaries—because, of course, no one else formats headers right—and your back is killing you. You stand to stretch when Rose walks in and catches you mid-pose, one hand bracing the small of your spine.
She crosses her arms, already judging you.
“You realize you’re not obligated to be the Association’s unpaid intern, right?”
“I’m just keeping busy.”
“You’re nesting in spreadsheets.”
You glare. “Don’t start.”
“I’m not starting. I’m continuing.”
She tosses a folder onto the desk, tone sharpening just enough to dig in.
“You don’t like this work. You’re not even supposed to be doing it. But you’re acting like if you stop for five minutes, the world’s gonna forget you exist.”
“I’m not—!”
“You are,” she cuts in. “And the worst part is, if I were doing this? You’d be the first to tell me to sit my ass down and breathe.”
You open your mouth, but the only thing that comes out is silence—and a wave of heat rising in your cheeks.
She sighs, more gently now.
“You’re not going to disappear just because you’re slowing down. You’re pregnant, not invisible.”
You drop back into your chair, tense and unwilling to admit she’s right.
Rose lingers a second longer. “You wanna prove something? Prove you can listen for once.”

You're curled on the couch in the corner of Zayne’s office, tablet propped on your thighs, stylus dancing across the screen as you breeze through another stack of reports.
He’s been pretending to review scans, but he’s mostly been watching you.
“How many reports is that today?” he asks finally, eyes not leaving his tablet.
You don’t look up. “Just a couple.”
“That’s your third ‘couple’ since this morning.”
You sigh, the stylus slowing. “They pile up when no one does them.”
“There are other that can help you as well.”
“They’re busier than me.”
He hums, noncommittal. You recognize that sound—it means he’s noting everything and choosing silence for now.
He stands after a moment, crossing the room without a sound. You expect him to hover, maybe offer tea again. Instead, he crouches in front of you, cool hands gently taking your ankle before you can object.
“Zayne—”
“You’ve been sitting too long,” he says simply, thumb pressing into the soft, swollen flesh near your arch.
You let out a sharp breath—not from pain, but the sudden relief that spreads like warmth through your foot. It’s startling, how much it hurts and soothes at the same time. Like peeling off a pressure bandage you didn’t realize you were wearing.
“I’m fine,” you murmur.
“Mm,” he replies, entirely unconvinced. He keeps working, fingers precise, careful. “Do you want me to stop?”
The ache in your calves pulses in response—a dull throb reminding you of every hour spent hunched over case files and mission logs. You hadn’t meant to ignore your body. You just... forgot.
He moves to your other foot, and when he finds the sore spot along your heel, you twitch slightly.
The moment his fingers start to knead with practiced care, your shoulders sag. The tension there slips loose without permission—like your body had been waiting for someone else to give it the okay to stop.
“You didn’t even stretch today, did you?” he asks.
“I meant to.”
He glances up, expression unreadable—but the way he shifts, drawing your legs into his lap so he can rub deeper along your calf, says everything. You don't protest. You just let your head fall back against the couch cushion, exhaustion seeping out of you in slow waves.
“You’re not helping your case by spoiling me like this,” you murmur, eyes closed.
“You’re not helping mine by pretending you don’t need it.”
He doesn’t say slow down. Doesn’t tell you you’re overdoing it—you’ve heard that enough from everyone else. Instead, he presses his thumb gently behind your knee, finding the tight muscle you didn’t realize was sore, and stays silent.
It makes you feel safe enough to rest your hand on your stomach.
He notices that too.
After a while, he murmurs, “You’re not a machine.” His voice is soft, but there’s steel underneath. “Even machines get maintained.”
You sigh. “Don’t start lecturing. I already got one from Rose.”
“I’m not lecturing,” he replies, moving his hands to your leg. “I’m observing.”
You scoff. “That’s worse.”
He keeps his massage pace steady. “Your body’s telling you to rest. You’re just not listening.”
“Because if I stop, I’ll—” You cut yourself off.
Zayne’s hands still for a second, before he continues again. But he still waits. Doesn’t press.
“I just... don’t want to feel useless.”
“You’re not,” he says simply. “You’re growing a whole human. You’re working harder than all of us.”
You drop your gaze. Your hand drifts to your stomach, and for a moment, a flicker of guilt settles in your chest—before you brush it off.
He touches your knee gently. “And before you say that doesn’t count—it does.”
You exhale, stubborn to the bitter end. “I just want to do my part.”
“You are,” he murmurs. “Even when you’re tired. Even when you’re quiet. You’re allowed to take care of yourself and still be part of everything.”
He stands, smooth and graceful as ever, and disappears into the office kitchenette. A moment later, he returns with a steaming mug and a little packet of dried fruit Lara had slipped you days ago.
You blink. “You kept that?”
He shrugs. “I’m observant, remember?”
He hands you the tea, careful not to say more.
But when you settle against the back of the couch again, sipping quietly, his fingers brush yours—just long enough to remind you he’s still there. Still watching. Still ready to catch you if—or when—you finally fall.

The mission had gone smoothly—standard sweep, zero surprises. And just when everyone was ready to head back and clock out, the patrol assignment came in.
You straighten without a second thought. “I’ll come.”
Tara, still adjusting her gloves, pauses. “Come where?”
“On patrol.”
A beat of silence.
Rose levels you with a look. “No.”
You raise a brow. “It’s just a regular route. You said yourself it’s the quietest zone.”
“That’s not the point—”
“I’ve been sitting for days, my legs are cramping, and if I stare at another report I’m going to set fire to the desk.”
Tara mutters, “That’s valid.”
Lara looks at the sky. “Please don’t actually set fire to the desk.”
“I’ll stay in the middle,” you add, like it sweetens the deal. “I’m a support unit. Ranged. I’m not going to be diving into anything.”
Rose folds her arms. “You’re still—”
“Pregnant, yes, I know,” you cut in, already tugging on your jacket. “Not made of glass. I’m not even showing yet. And HQ already approved base-side support, didn’t they?”
“They didn’t mean outside the base,” Rose mutters.
“They didn’t not mean it.”
Everyone looks at you.
You lift your chin, undeterred.
Lara speaks next, dry as ever. “Fine. But you’re in the middle.”
“I was planning to—”
Rose cuts in sharply, “You’re. Staying. In. The. Middle.”
You squint at her. “You’re not the squad leader.”
Lara, hand on her forehead. “You’re staying in the middle.”
You roll your eyes. “Noted.”
Tara snorts, clearly enjoying herself. “I’ll take rear side. Can’t have mom-to-be dodging wanderer guts and ruining her pretty boots.”
“I hate those boots,” you mumble.
“Exactly. That’s how we know you’re tired.”

You fall into formation—Rose at the front, Tara flanking rear-left, Lara bringing up the back, and you moving steady in the middle. It’s familiar. Easy. Your steps sync with theirs, your gun balanced at your side, Evol humming at your fingertips.
No one says it out loud, but they’re all subtly adjusting around you. Slower pace. Widened spacing. You catch it—but you let it go.
Because for the first time in weeks, your legs don’t ache from stillness. The air smells like rain instead of hospital antiseptic or your base’s office.
The zone is clean—stray wanderers here and there, nothing your squad can’t handle in their sleep.
You’re tired, sure—but this, you can handle it.
Until the air tears.
It doesn’t start as sound—it’s pressure. Your lungs forget how to breathe a moment before the world bends and tears open.
A Deepspace tunnel splits open in the middle of the street.
“Contact—two o’clock!” Rose snaps, a violet slash coming from her hands already singing through the first thing that crawls out.
You shift, instinct kicking in. Your Evol flashes, syncing instantly to Rose’s—sharpening her edges, accelerating her strikes.
Tara surges forward, intercepting another, and you link to her next, boosting her reflexes mid-movement. Lara flanks right behind with a glowing barrier.
It’s a tight formation. Efficient. You keep your distance, keep your focus. Your hands tremble a little, but you bite it back. One more boost—one more sync—
It starts getting hard to see clearly.
Your head pounds. Your knees buckle, unsteady.
You shift focus again, try to keep up with the flow, but your Evol stutters with jagged pulses, like it’s struggling to hold a signal. The edges of your vision blur.
Something disconnects. You think you hear someone yell your name—
And then nothing.

It’s the faint beep of a monitor you hear first. A soft rhythm, too steady to be anything from the field.
Then fingers. Wrapped around your hand, cool yet steady. Anchoring you.
Your eyes flutter open.
White ceiling. Hospital lights. The faint scent of antiseptic.
And Zayne.
His face is the first thing you see—tired, eyes ringed with shadow, but locked on you with absolute focus the moment you stir.
“You’re awake,” he says—relief and fear tangled in his voice.
His voice has that low, careful tone he uses with patients—except it’s thinner now. Strained around the edges.
Before you can say anything, he’s checking you, doctor-mode overriding everything. Fingers at your pulse, brushing against your wrist. A touch to your forehead. Gentle pressure along your wrist.
“No fever,” he murmurs to himself. “Vitals are stable... you fainted from exhaustion.”
You try to speak, but he’s already leaning in, brushing your hair from your face like he needs to see you fully to believe it.
Then, his hand lifts yours, holding it close. His lips press to your knuckles. Then your temple. Then your cheek.
No anger. No lecture. Just that quiet sorrow in his eyes.
“I was scared,” he admits, barely a whisper. “You weren’t waking up.”
Your chest tightens. You try to blink it away, but his hand squeezes yours, grounding you again.
He exhales through his nose, like he’s been holding it in for hours.
“I should be angry,” he says finally, voice low. “But I’m mostly just... terrified.”
You blink at him, throat tight.
“You could’ve gotten hurt. Worse. You and the baby.”
His eyes stay locked on yours, steady now—but not cold. Just bare.
“I know you want to help. I know sitting still drives you mad. But pushing yourself until you pass out—how is that helping anyone?”
Your lips part, but he shakes his head gently, thumb brushing your wrist.
“I’m not saying this to hurt you. I’m saying it because I love you.”
You swallow hard, your throat dry and raw. “I didn’t think it would get that bad,” you murmur, voice barely there. “I just… I thought I could still be useful.”
His expression doesn’t shift much, but his thumb stills against your skin. “You are. You always are. But not like this.”
He lowers your joined hands onto the blanket, his other hand trailing along your arm like he’s reminding himself you’re still here. “You don’t have to prove anything to anyone. Least of all to me.”
You look away, eyes burning. “It didn’t feel that way.”
“I know,” he says quietly. “That’s what scares me.”
He leans forward, pressing his forehead against yours. His touch is cool, his presence a balm—but beneath it, you feel the way he trembles. Just faintly.
“I need you to take care of yourself,” he whispers. “Not just for the baby. For me, too.”
You nod—slow and aching, the fight bleeding out like water through a cracked glass.
“I’m sorry,” you whisper. “I didn’t mean to—”
“I know,” he says, and his voice shakes just enough to break your heart. He lifts your hand again, presses it to his cheek like he needs the anchor just as much.
“I know you were trying your best. But I need you to stop carrying all of it like it’s only yours to hold.”
His eyes meet yours—clear, but so raw. “You’re not alone in this. You never were. So please… stop acting like you have to be.”
You swallow hard. “I just... I didn’t want to be a burden.”
He closes his eyes for a moment, jaw tight, like the words cut deeper than you meant them to.
“You’re not,” he says. No hesitation. “You never have been. Not now. Not before.”
Your throat stings. “Then why does it feel like I am? Like if I stop, if I let go even a little, I’ll just fade into the background while everyone else moves on without me?”
Zayne shifts, leans forward, and rests his forehead against your temple.
“Because you're so used to holding everything up, you don’t know how to not fight for space. Even when no one’s trying to take it from you.”
You breathe in slowly. His scent, the warmth of his skin, the steady thrum of his presence—everything about him quiets the noise in your head just a little.
“I thought I was helping,” you whisper. “I wanted to help.”
“I know,” he says again. “But pushing yourself until you collapse doesn’t help anyone—not me, not the baby, not your squad. And especially not you.”
His hand cups your cheek, thumb brushing under your eye where a tear slips free.
“I don’t need you to be perfect,” he says gently. “I need you to be here.”
Something in you breaks—not with violence, but with mercy. Like something brittle giving way to light.
You nod, a little shaky. “I still want to do better.”
Zayne presses a kiss to your temple. “Then rest. Let yourself breathe. That’s where it starts.”
And this time, when your eyes close again, it’s not from exhaustion—but relief.

You wake again to the sound of a quiet page turning.
Zayne sits beside you, long legs folded, a medical file in one hand—yours, probably—but his attention snaps to you the second your breathing shifts.
He sets it down. “You’re awake.”
His voice is softer this time. Less strained. The lines around his eyes are still there, but something in them eases.
You blink at him. “You’re still here?”
“I wasn’t planning to leave.” He brushes his fingers over your wrist, like he’s making sure your pulse is still real beneath his touch. “How do you feel?”
“Tired.” Your voice comes out dry and rough.
He nods once. “That’s good.” Then he picks up the glass of water from the side table and offers it to you. His fingers graze yours as you take it—but he don’t pull away immediately.
You pause, then shift your other hand to gently hold his, anchoring it there. Your thumb brushes over his knuckles, light but deliberate. He squeezes your hand in return.
“It means you’re listening to your body, not fighting it.” His lips twitch, just a little.
You exhale before taking a slow sip of the water, letting the coolness ease the rasp in your throat. His hand stays in yours.
When you lower the glass, you don’t let go.
And for the first time in hours, you feel more at ease.
Zayne’s thumb brushes lightly across your knuckles—once, twice. Then, gently, he says, “Rose and Caleb are here. With the twins. They’ve been waiting outside—Rose didn’t want to crowd you unless you were ready.”
You go still. “The twins?”
“They were very insistent about seeing their favorite aunt.”
You arch a brow. That’s your line—he usually waits for you to say it, then replies with, “their only aunt.”
But this time, he says it for you.
And something about that—gentle, unexpected—makes a strange, delicate flutter rises in your chest.
Tender. Fragile. But steady.
Hormones, yup, that’s why.
“Can I see them?”
Zayne leans in, kisses your forehead, brushes your hair back with careful fingers. Then he steps into the hallway. A few quiet murmurs follow. The door opens.
Rose is the first to step in.
She looks... fine. Hair tied up, usual jacket slung over her arm, lips pressed into a flat line. But her eyes linger too long on the monitor beside you. Her fingers twitch at her side like she wants to check the IV, double-check your vitals—anything to do something. Instead, she stops at the foot of your bed.
“You look like shit,” she says, dry as ever.
“Thanks,” you rasp, voice hoarse.
Rose exhales. Shoulders sink. “I mean. You scared the hell out of us.”
You open your mouth, but she holds up a hand. “Let me get through this without crying yet.”
Caleb enters with the twins—both wide-eyed and quiet for once, clinging to his hands. They’re three now, just tall enough to peek over the bed railing. Caleb gives you a small smile, nods once—like we’ll talk later—and steps aside.
“I shouldn’t have let you come on patrol,” Rose says, voice quieter now. “Even if it was routine. Even if nothing was supposed to happen. You’re my twin. My squadmate. I knew you weren’t at full strength. I just...” Her breath stutters. “I just thought if I said no, you’d push harder. And I didn’t want to be the bad guy.”
You swallow. “I wanted to be there.”
“I know.” She folds her arms, eyes wet. “But I should’ve been the one to stop you anyway.”
“You tried,” you say. “You did more than anyone. I just—” Your voice cracks. “I didn’t want to be left behind.”
Rose’s expression finally breaks. She moves toward you, voice shaking. “You’re not behind. You’re with us. And you always will be. Just—don’t do that again, okay? Don’t scare me like that.”
You reach for her at the same time she leans in. Arms wrap around each other tight—shaky, unsteady, clinging like you're both trying to fix something that cracked open between you. Her forehead presses to your shoulder.
“I’m sorry,” she chokes out.
“Me too.”
That’s when the twins—silent up to this point—decide they’ve had enough of being observers.
They scramble up the bed, climbing over your legs like determined little puppies, wedging themselves between you and Rose, their small arms trying to hug both of you at once.
And then they’re crying. Loud and messy and confused.
“Mommy’s crying,” your niece says, and your nephew wails, “Why is Auntie sick—stop being sick!”
Rose laughs through a sob, pulling them in tighter. “She’s okay, baby. She’s okay now.”
It’s a mess of limbs and tears and sniffles on the bed, and for a moment, the whole room is soft with the sound of people trying to breathe again.
At the side of the room, Zayne stands with Caleb, arms loosely crossed, watching the scene unfold.
“Should we hug it out too?” Caleb murmurs, glancing sideways.
Zayne gives him a bland look. “No.”
Caleb grins and then sighs, dramatic. “I thought we had something, Zayne. Where’s my love?”
Zayne doesn’t even blink. “Buried somewhere beneath your need for theatrics.”
“Ouch,” Caleb mutters, clutching his chest like he’s been personally wounded. “Ruthless. No wonder your patients love you—you leave just enough emotional damage for a lasting impression.”
Zayne exhales through his nose, gaze drifting back to the bed where the tangle of you, Rose, and the twins is still unfolding—small hands clinging, Rose’s face pressed against your shoulder, the kids hiccuping their tears into your sides. The corner of his mouth pulls, barely, almost a smile.
Caleb watches him for a moment longer, then, softer. “...Glad she’s okay.”
Zayne doesn’t say anything to that. Just nods once.
And that’s when Caleb pulls out his phone. He doesn’t even hide it.
“I’m taking a picture.”
Zayne lifts an eyebrow, but doesn’t stop him.
“For the photo wall,” Caleb says, angling it just right. “Or the ‘look at your chaotic emotional legacy’ folder for when they’re teenagers. Whichever comes first.”
He takes the picture with the absolute stealth of a dad used to capturing chaotic moments.
Zayne watches, quiet. But this time, when the screen captures your face mid-laugh, he doesn’t look away.
Your hand in Rose’s hair. Little fingers tangled in yours. Tears drying slow on your cheeks. A smile caught between sobs, still glimmering. The moment is already saved.

I hope this situation is resolved quickly. I hope Quackity and the cc’s are able to work to make conditions better. But in the meantime, we as an audience are going to need to be prepared for some things.
What things, you ask? Well, to begin, this situation is very similar to what happens when an unprotected labor force (in this case the admins/devs/etc) begins to communicate and band together for better working conditions (eg unions). The higher ups don’t want this. The higher ups are going to do anything and everything in their power to prevent this from happening. The higher ups WANT this labor force to be unprotected because it means that they can continue to take advantage of them and make more money off of their work. As more and more former (and, hopefully, current) admins begin to speak out, I can guarantee you that the higher ups will work to silence those still involved with the project as much as they can. If they think one of the current admins is giving out information or is about to go forward with their story, they will remove them first.
If this happens-if an egg admin suddenly stops showing up or shows up acting different than they normally do-it is because the higher ups have chosen to silence them rather than fix the underlying problem.
If this happens: WE NEED TO SHOW OUR SUPPORT.
If this turns into an actual strike on the side of the admins (which I feel would take the form of NONE of them showing up which would remove a majority of this server’s content and generate high audience support-and that’s without getting into a strike on the side of the building devs/writers/etc) we need to remember to support them. That means being vocal about what we want to see (better conditions) and letting those higher ups know that we stand with the workers.
If this becomes a strike-and I dearly hope it does-we as an audience need to support it and understand that the content we are used to may not be able to happen for an extended period of time. That’s the entire POINT of a strike; it’s disruptive.
This got away from me a little, but I think it’s important to note. I hope to fucking god that this situation is resolved quickly in favor of the admins. They have put too much time, effort, and soul into this project for some assholes in middle management to give them jack shit in return.
Support workers. Always.

If you all are gonna write posts where you condescendingly use other Bats as mouthpieces to own Jason about his beliefs, the least you can do is actually get his motivations correct.

your take on lando is so interesting and by far the most nuanced view of him I’ve seen. I think’s it clear that he needs help managing his emotions bc some of things he says and done are baffling and the latest thing of him liking criticism proves it. he doesn’t have that champion mentality (or just seem to be in a good headspace) and a lot of that can be traced backed to McLaren. He messes up his starts every time and that could be linked with a mental barrier but ig no at McLaren cares enough to look into that???Like that’s your driver and your wdc you’re washing down the drain.

I think I retain an enormous amount of empathy for him because prior to this year he was one of my favourites. I think he started acting strange and immature and there was this initial huge backlash but this weekend has kind of made me see things more clearly, between his actions, his words to media, how McLaren handle him, and his driving. And he really is a victim of his environment.
He IS an incredibly good driver. Before you all boo me: sure he's nowhere near Max who's currently in another league, nor is he really near Charles who would be in this championship instead of Lando if not for Ferrari shitting the bed midseason. Lando is however, on par with George, and currently probably better than Carlos and Oscar. I would happily call him the third best driver on the grid at the moment. He however, does have a problem with starts, that's just a fact. As you said anon, it's more than just experience at this point there is obviously some sort of mental block there–he's clearly going into these starts expecting to lose places. But again, like you said, McLaren obviously don't care enough to look into that. Other things this weekend just made me notice: him snapping at a journalist is not and has never been normal behaviour for him, for example, begging McLaren for that switch in the sprint and immediately catastrophising that they won't do it (pressing the radio button immediately to panic and say "I thought we talked about this") is another example of just, slightly abnormal behaviour. That coupled with his internet lurking (he liked an edit of Max a week back, and is now obviously reading his comments) paints a picture I'm not sure I like. I'm never going to assume anything, but considering he's talked about struggling with mental health in the past, I can't help but be a little uneasy on his behalf.
All of the above becomes especially true if we consider McLaren and the case of Daniel Ricciardo. As much as they love to position themselves as the champions in the sport of mental health, the whole Daniel thing remains a worrying incident they've tried their best to sweep under the rug–he never recovered his mentality in that team and instead of working with him the team were perfectly happy to throw him to one side with little regard to prioritise Lando instead. I can't help but feel with a certain sinking that this is what they plan to do with Lando and Oscar, if Lando doesn't win the championship next year. The problem is, Lando is a lot younger than Daniel was, with a lot more career ahead of him and theoretically, a much higher ceiling to reach–yet McLaren seem perfectly happy to not put any development into Lando to help him reach that ceiling. Just like some drivers need developing in the wet, or the dry, or high downforce, or reaction times, some drivers need developing in their mentality. And it is McLaren's job to recognise this if the driver doesn't recognise it in themselves, and tell them what they need to go work on. This should have been something that was flagged as a development area for Lando way before this season, even as far back as 2021 it was apparent and yet McLaren have done nothing to help him and seem happier to just, leave him out to dry.
McLaren is the true evil here and for all their attempts to appeal to a younger demographic and impassioned defences of their morality and mental health being important–I think they've proven that they would rather take the easy road than the right one, even if the right one could yield more results. Oscar struggles with other things that Lando doesn't struggle with ie. tyre management, quali but I think they will repeat their pattern of rather than developing a driver they want to discard an extremely good one in the fruitless search of a generational talent. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think its impossible that instead of taking responsibility for losing the WDC this year (because make no mistake, this is mostly their fault–from a strategy point of view to how they've managed their drivers to refusing to give Lando the support he needs until its too late) they will just try and shift the blame and indirectly pin the failure of this year on Lando in order to try and match public sentiment. Ultimately, Lando has been failed by his team and his environment more than anything and even though I'm happy this championship has (deservedly) gone to Max, I can't help but feel that Lando was not given a fighting chance by his team.

I think the thing that really bugs me when people talk about "3H is so much better than Fates in terms of grey morality"... is that it only focuses on a very specific subset of greyness as a whole. When you actually take a step back from the perspective the game shows you, it's actually not morally complex in the slightest, especially compared to Fates.
For Fódlan, you're introduced to a fundamentally broken system that thrives off of eugenicist breeding, abuse, tyranny, technological stagnation, religious dogma, theocracy and experimentation that saw a young girl watch her fellow test subjects almost all die having Crests implanted into them just to create a superhuman. Said theocracy is staved by a consummate liar who's basically "Corrin, but gone wrong and a terrible human being" with an inability to let go of severe mommy issues or the ability to let go of her hatred and genocide denialism, intentionally keeping up a lie to make the most of it. Said subject leader ended up wanting to cast down the oppressive system to make one of "merit," but becomes an imperialistic, authoritarian revanchist who stages a war of total conquest to enforce that order, and in her ending, doesn't even fully dismantle the titles of nobility outright. Dimitri was genuinely a decent person before the massacre that killed most of his family and almost everyone he loved, causing him to go under severe psychosis that, when unraveled, causes him to turn into a bloodlusted maniacal tyrant who's more in line with Ashnard from FE9 than the typical "good boy lord" archetype since Marth. The least horrible of the bunch is a neoliberal schemer who sides with the strongest side (in VW it's the Church, in GW it's against the church) who can and does show a willingness to drop his interests like a hot potato when it suits him and openly intended to have Almyra invade Fódlan to establish the continent as his own suzerain state. And each of them, if not held back by the sheer divine grace of Byleth's mute ass, ends up committing tons of atrocities in the opposition to manipulate the audience into thinking they chose the "right" side. Hell, even in YOUR route it's strongly implied you're doing the things in the other routes and the story just doesn't want you to consider it because you're the good guy from your POV.
They're all awful and war criminals, and no matter what people say, that isn't moral greyness or moral complexity. Having a story where there isn't a clearly-defined sense of right and wrong, good and bad, to define morally grey conflict as a whole leads to a story where they're all horribly awful if the story isn't smart enough to recognize it doesn't fully absolve them as a person for your actions nor does it dehumanize them. People set a 0-100 scale that's never in the middle assuming a war criminal is either a goodest boy who did no wrong or a violent monster who needs to be put down and not made excuses for it, when the truth is that people are far more complicated than they seem on the wholesale. 3H doesn't do this, it wants you to think your side is always the good guys and the enemy side is sympathetic but still the bad guys. And it does this to avoid pushing forward the truth that you're genuinely no better and that the story is openly feeding you an extremely impressionistic lie of events. This is where any moral greyness falls apart, as without any kind of acknowledgement of your side's failings in a morally grey conflict, there is no hope of making a story that's actually morally grey. You created "hero defeats woobie villain" type story-writing, just slapped a coat of paint calling it morally grey when it isn't.
To give a contrast, Fates goes out of its way to avoid ignoring the actions and consequences of Corrin's choices. All of the routes have players make choices that cause a severe lapse of judgement that leads to bloodshed on both sides and innocent people on both sides dying. On Birthright, you're intentionally invoked ludonarrative dissonance by Corrin in that route being loud and aggressive of killing Garon and not questioning the "good kingdom vs. evil empire" conflict... with not only Corrin not even trying to stymie the bloodshed, but the abundance of route maps and killing waves upon waves of enemies influences that bloodshed and is meant to make players question their actions even as they kill recruitable, named soldiers on the other side. Even Ryoma, by openly lying to Corrin about not about being blood related, is more morally complex because he did so in order to keep Corrin and his family together and because it's essential data, nevermind that Ryoma is strongly implied to know Nohr is starving and just... do nothing about it, feigning ignorance with Silas's explanation in Birthright Chapter 23. Even as far as Corrin being a genuinely good person, they still kill thousands in-story and they don't really care about who lives and who dies as long as it's not their Nohrian siblings, and this leads to Xander accidentally killing Elise and then committing suicide by cop. All while Corrin teaches Ryoma to change as a better person.
Conquest is even more morally complex and grey; Corrin goes back to Nohr with the inability to betray the only family they've ever known and try to end this madness internally, before realizing the privilege they commanded as a Nohrian royal and tried to sabotage the Nohrian war effort and work in any kind of change. He succeeded in ensuring no casualties in small skirmishes, but he failed miserably trying to ensure no deaths in Cheve as it suddenly made them realize the rot is far too institutional for them to fully reform; Garon is a flesh-puppet piloted by Anankos with no regard for anything but destroying both kingdoms, his two trusted men are evil, and the Nohrian royals are deep in denial their father who was once loving and kind has become rotten and abusive and caused so much trauma they don't want to even acknowledge he's been gone for so long. It's a frightening realistic depiction of an abusive household with how the Nohrian royals self-rationalize their control over a fundamentally fucked-up situation, and Corrin begins to see that when Azura reveals Garon's true form. Knowing that the Yato as is isn't strong enough to pierce Garon's blessing from the Rainbow Sage and actually defeat them (which is strongly implied if not all-but-confirmed to operate similarly to Ashnard and BK's blessings in FE9), they need to show Garon's true form to the army... so they intentionally and knowingly abet the genocidal invasion of Hoshido, needing to sacrifice his ideals to save as many people as he can in the least horrible, fucked-up way possible. Along the way while they save a few thousands die in the invasion and Corrin ends up seriously mentally breaking up along the way as he's forced to nearly kill his two brothers and become demonized by the nation he's putting to the sword for the greater good, as he's forced to keep up the lie of a heartless invader until it just... becomes too much. And this is the route people have the most issues with, despite being the route that is so fucking complex that it gives everyone the moral sympathy needed to be empathized with, while not excusing their actions.
What Fates does exceedingly well that 3H doesn't is that it recognizes that the characters' choices are their own actions, and expects readers to pay attention to dialogue to connect fundamental revelations of the plot. It doesn't need to make its characters morally hazy-feely or war criminals with fundamentally unsympathetic traits to make them morally complex, it does this by having the fundamental concept behind Fates is two forces of good people being trapped in a fundamentally violent and horrible war that threatens to tear the continent apart in the process. And Fates does that so exceptionally well by having actual moral complexity to the characters that merits reasons to go down each of the routes while not being so non-committal to calling out injustice or bad actions in the story that it completely destroys any point it has. With Fates, I get the feeling of two families and armies of good people trapped in a war that's engineered by a broken god wanting to destroy the world and both kingdoms. With 3H, I get the feeling many people in Syria felt about each of the factions being staffed with war criminals, rapists and mass-murderers. I can sympathize with all sides of Fates because it recognizes their actions as they are while not diluting their complexity as characters. I cannot sympathize with 3H's lords because they are all so solely-defined by their end slates that no amount of blood, violence or suffering will ever be enough to end the war and them crossing lines even Ryoma would never, ever do. Ryoma, as in the guy who runs basically Fates's equivalent of the Ninja CIA with all the ugliness it implies. Even he wouldn't do what Edlegard, Rhea and Dimitri stoop to in their oppositional and player routes, and while the story humanizes Ryoma, it just expects us to love 3H's blorbos so much we just begin making jokes about how war crimes are "expected" of the series and we should still forgive them because... the story presents it better?
It's a major reason the shitting on Fates's story while lofting 3H as the better one irritates me so much; Fates had an actual writer who was committed to the greater narrative and nuances of the characters that got botched in the implementation of the JP script (which was why IF was even more panned there than Fates was here, which has regular appreciators outside of hardcore FE fans) and got fixed in the localization (despite its flaws), while 3H expects people to just believe they're the good guys without actually thinking about what their actions entails or making consequences stick. And I think it's most infuriating because the reason why people got so weird about Fates, especially Conquest, is because it was so willing to make the player feel uncomfortable with their actions and provoke intentional dissonance in their actions of being rewarded for the right inputs as a Good Gamer™ versus the very visible suffering it causes, and it not saying to the camera "And That's Terrible" and expecting it to be evident within the context and subtext of the work. For many people, it wasn't, and gave such a bad first impression regardless of the sheer cohesive validity of the work that they just wrote it off and dismissed an amazing story as too little value to actually analyze. Meanwhile, 3H's logos, ethos and pathos follow-through sucked ass, but people forgave it because of the lore boner people had and because, when you break it down, 3H is no different than the "good guy vs. evil empire" stories the fandom derides, it just does so in a way that makes those your route deems "evil" sympathetic even when they really aren't. It was so telling that when FE fans said "We want grey morality!" what they really meant was "We want to be morally, objectively correct and rewarded for being a Good Gamer™ while the enemy army has a sob story that makes them sympathetic while still morally, objectively wrong!". In hindsight, it's not hard to see why, Arvis, Lyon and BK are the series's most popular villains, but it's not good writing to apply that to a story about war criminals while thinking sob stories serve as a sufficient excuse to unconscionable atrocities, because FE fans don't want to feel responsible for their actions. They're literally the kind of people Spec Ops: The Line critiques about the typical military FPS dudebro wanting to feel like a hero for being a war criminal, only implied to an intelligence ego-driven bunch of virgin nerds who cannot agree on basic fucking canon details.
...this was a really long ask, so I'll TL;DR it with "FE fans are bad at media analysis and really should stop calling 3H better written than Fates when 3H refuses to actually analyze its own context while Fates does so extensively in giving each of the cast initiative, including for their own fuck-ups."
While I will push back a little against some of the assertions regarding Rhea and Claude (and also Dimitri somewhat) given their circumstances of being the ones on the defense in 3H, I vehemently agree with your assessment, and that's why 3H in general falls flat for me in its storytelling.
Fates, as you say, has intentional dissonance that makes you question your actions when provided with more information the further you get into the game. 3H's dissonance just reads very unintentional.
Edelgard's entire route is obvious low hanging fruit, especially the scene where she executes Dimitri, accusing him of "being obsessed with her" when she's invading his country for no fucking reason other than wanting to enforce her will on independent countries. Instead of going to therapy, she decided to kill a bunch of people, she's nuts and will never not be a shit person.
But to your point, there are other lines in 3H that read similarly ridiculous, fanning the dissonance.
Edelgard and Claude's lines to Kostas in chapter 2 about "being noble and commoner isn't different and you don't have the right to kill actually", and they both sound like immature fuckwads. Claude's consistent push to pry information out of people is insensitive at best, and borders on invasion of privacy. Claude constantly both sides-ing the church and Edelgard, and that's not even going into the shit he pulls in Hopes. Dimitri both sides-ing the dynamic of nobles getting rid of their successors for not having crests. Dimitri constantly trying to find the best in Edelgard after he begins his recovery, to the point where an unbelieveable parley scene occurs, like give me a break. Rhea is never able to confront her issues and mistakes on screen unless she's dying or being romanced by Byleth. Sylvain's "battle of ideals" line in Azure Moon, Dorothea being sad over Ferdie in AM or VW despite him being kind of a coward in that he doesn't have the stones to bite back at Edelgard, Mercedes also has a line about Ferdinand, in general just the entire spiel that side characters make about fighting old friends because "there's no choice."
Does this cast have any self awareness or agency, or not? That's why I rail against Byleth's presence in the plot so much, because he's treated as the end all be all of what is right/moral/correct. Sure, characters can feel bad about what they're doing, but because Byleth (i.e. the player) is there, they must be on the right path in the end. And everyone has to be sypmathetic when you're against them because there has to be room for Byleth (i.e. the player) to have enough reason to join them in another route, otherwise the multi route structure doesn't make sense.
In concept it's already a story structure that warps itself around what makes the player insert feel most good, but in execution it's somehow even worse. And that's because all of it is done in dialogue, many lines of which I've already mentioned. You're not supposed to think about the material reality of the shitty things these characters do and say, because the priority is that they can tug at your heart enough for you to excuse them/fix them/justify them.
Claude is ultimately not a bad person as a whole, but the game really wants you to not consider how feckless and fickle he can be when faced with bad odds, especially when he kind of effectively abandons an entire country that he's supposed to be leading whenever Byleth's not supporting him. Rhea and Dimitri are snug fit into either "crazed opposition that must be taken care of" or "person project that You need to get a handle on", both interpretations taking agency away from making the player seem like a bad person or going in the opposite direction by making the player the ONLY person who's able to save them from themselves. And Edelgard is the queen of never being held to account the damage that she does, always skirting responsibility in-game and in the fandom because "she just did what she felt she had to," "sometimes change takes sacrifice and horrible choices," or "she just wanted to WALK with you, sensei!" All in an attempt to get you to not care what you do when siding with her, and to make you feel bad for her when you don't side with her.
The player must never feel bad about the objectively bad things they do, and must always feel correct and justified in the things they feel are correct. That's the 3H M.O. When you recognize that the people you side with are kinda shitty no matter the route, it's not because the writers wanted you to, it's because you put the time in the think about it long enough. The game wanted you to feel bad about the war because "we used to be FRIENDS", not because of the terrible things you do in the war in the first place, as if the methods and machinations aren't a significant part of why warfare fucking sucks.
And as you say, and I mostly agree on, is the Fates M.O. is not shying away from the negative impacts that Corrin's choice had. In Birthright, Corrin's close Nohrian allies/siblings die because of the choice he made, because siding with Hoshido had a ripple effect on how those near and dear to him were treated by Garon. Another part of Birthright's narrative is the Hoshidan cast having to get used to Corrin just being himself, and trusting that a Nohrian isn't who they believe them to be. Exposing Ryoma's ignorance and showing that his arrogant juggernaut plans aren't gonna cut it when it comes to establishing a lasting peace, is critical in showing that, yeah, mindlessly fighting Nohr doesn't fix the root problems. It intentionally pulls the rug under the player by going "yeah your side kind of fucking sucks for charging at Nohr all this time, when these are people with dreams, loved ones and livelihoods."
Conquest puts a twist on this, by having Corrin be relatively successful in some areas when it comes to changing perceptions towards Nohr, helping people gain autonomy from a brutal regime, and actively undermining the horrible things that war has its soldiers do. The rug pull is then done during chapter 13, and again after the Sakura map, where Corrin is smacked with the reality that sometimes you fucking fail at what you're trying to do in story, despite the player succeeding in gameplay. The player representative doesn't have complete control nor is he treated with kid gloves in Fates when faced with the ugliness from his side and the opposition.
And what's greatest about it, is that it's showing you, rather than employing a missable dialogue in a monastery about how sad it is to fight against former classmates. Dude, I know it's sad, is that really all you can say? The message begins to dull when it's bashed over your head too much, and especially when there's no meaningful impact in story, all because there can't be because Byleth (the player) has to be accounted for as the ultimate arbiter of who joins him or not. You can't avoid feeling shitty about Scarlet, like you can with Ferdie. You can try your best trying to get around the retainers in Fates when you fight them, but they still have crushing death lines because the story is written to accommodate the fact that you're killing people who aren't evil at their core. 3H has to make sure you can avoid that before a war even starts. Flora and Ryoma's suicides, Xander's suicide-by-cop, Takumi's descent, the fates of the Kitsune and Wolfskin who were caught in bad circumstances (something that, despite claims of poor writing, happens all the fucking time and is another shitty thing about war that more need to recognize); the topics of isolationism, war profiteering, subterfuge and treason, spy networks and thievery, the ethics of bystanderism, FUCKING CIVILIAN CASUALTIES.
That last one-alongside the general idea of trying to win a war with as little bloodshed as possible-is one of the prime driving forces of an ENTIRE ROUTE in Fates, and is still pretty prevalent for Corrin's beliefs in the other two. In 3H? Barely a footnote in all honesty, and more so an extension of how other characters are perceived. Edelgard forcing civilians to stay when Enbarr is under siege? Claude says "it takes some resolve, I gotta hand it to her." Remire being destroyed and the Empire doing fuck all? Uhhh, look over there, they got taken in by Rhea, don't worry about it. What about the effects of the Alliance being dismantled and given to the Empire, Kingdom or the church? Or showing more of the people in the monastery town that face the most danger from the Imperial invasion or the thieves after the timeskip? None of this is treated as the horrific circumstance it is, so it ends up as fridge horror you think about at 2 a.m.
Thinking about how the war affects the common people and civilians isn't the main priority in any of 3H's routes as far as I can remember, since it's just lumped in with the vague "too much bloodshed, doesn't war suck" aesop. We never dive into the specifics of why war sucks in 3H because doing that has the potential for the player to materially feel bad about what they're doing, so instead we always have a cushion to assuage our feelings in by being reminded that Byleth (the player) is the pinnacle of good and always knows the right thing to do in the end. Which is shallow, vapid, and utterly spineless in a simulation game series about war.
A lot of this is fueled by my anti-3H though, so I'm very willing to take corrections on things I flat out get wrong, I haven't played that game to completion in like a over a year, so the details are finally getting hazy.

romance as part of the video game zeitgeist is. really interesting to me. because it is important! it's a great way to introduce depth and dimension to both character and story: it allows you as a writer to explore other sides of the characters, how they react when their feelings for a character change and develop, how they treat the player character in relation to their own goals and the ways they approach their own feelings. most games (at least, games that aren't specifically of the romance genre, ie otomes/dating sims) allow platonic routes, and while I'd love to see more bestie mechanics implemented (you have a favourite guy who is your closest friend and the game acknowledges this even if it's not romantic) i get that there's issues with scope, and deadlines, and the feasability of inputting everything that I personally would enjoy. i get it.
but. but! it is that. romance is a way to deepen the characterisation, to increase the investment in the story. from a cynical perspective, it is a way to draw in an audience, and i've discussed my feelings about how and how well larian do this before, but - it is a means to an end. it is a part of the story: it is not the story. this is not a romance game. this is a game with a story that is, and should be, unaffected by romance - the individual character arcs, sure, but the overarching plot continues regardless of your marital status, and the characters still deserve complete arcs whether they're of romantic interest to the player or not.
prioritising romance and romantic scenes over other content is one thing; prioritising romance over bugfixing, plot holes, adequate content is, put simply, poor management. the game, and each character arc, should be able to stand alone without romance; alternatively, if you're going to market it as a romance-heavy game, with a focus on romance, it is plain and simple Failure not to provide romance content in equal measure for every character. it can't be a dating sim for astarion and not for wyll; it shouldn't be a romance-centric game for shadowheart and a story-focused game for lae'zel. you can't have it both ways: if it's a romance game, it fails to provide adequate romance content for all characters, and if it's a story game, it fails to prioritise the role each character plays appropriately. I think it's a shame, and I think it's understandable - they've tried to cover all their bases, and neglected both in the process, and the game had deadlines and was released unfinished, but it's been more than six months, and the game remains woefully incomplete in many aspects.
