Time to refresh your daily music playlist with some new stuff. It’s #MusicMonday!

The BIG news of the day, I’m all booked to wing my way into Vancouver on August 25th, allowing me to head down to The Gorge, once again, for the Dave Matthews Band weekend – my all-time favourite road trip! SUPER STOKED!

1. "Tidal Wave" – Husky

Lead singer from this relatively new Triple J Unearthed band from Melbourne sounds a lot like talented Canadian soloist “Justin Nozuka”… don’t you think?

Hello all so recently I've been absolutely obsessed with this incredible Aberfaeth fic by the incredible @starsidecharacter, called Close Yet Miles Away. The basic idea is what if the Abernant's didn't move to Solace until senior year, but in freshman year Adaine and Fig were pen pals. Anyways the fic is incredible and everyone should read it, but in my obsession I have made a playlist based on the fic. For anyone interested, I did actually put a lot of thought into the tracklist and order, which I will go into excruciating detail about below: (spoiler warning)

She - Dodie - This song was actually the first track in a different playlist I found for the same fic, and for good reason! It perfectly encapsulates Adaine's mental state at the outset of the story, tortured both by her family and her own internal struggles with loneliness and sexuality.

Message in a Bottle - The Police This is an obvious pick lol. The fic really kicks off with Adaine throwing a bottle with a note and a sending stone into the ocean. Besides the title, the song is also an allegory for loneliness.

Friend - Jeff & Casey Lee Williams - Given that this song is an original song for the soundtrack of a show, there are obviously a couple lines that don't quite fit. However, the overall song is perfect for this fic. The song starts off incredibly slow and melancholy, with the artist lamenting their loneliness, before making an abrupt shift into an upbeat anthem praising the appearance of a newfound friend who turns their world upside down and teaches them what it means to be loved. The end of the song also hints towards a tragic parting between the two, foreshadowing events later to come in the fic.

Not Like The Rest - GIRLBAND! - Enter Fig Faeth! What better way to herald the entrance of our deuteragonist and resident punk rocker than with an absolute banger of a track that proudly proclaims the artist's refusal to cave to social or sexual norms. While in a vacuum the track may seem unfitting for Fig's introduction within the fic, I felt it was appropriate given that anyone reading the fic is already going to be familiar with Fig, and this track feels like it could have actually been written by Fig and the Cig Figs

Treehouse - Alex G, Someone to You - BANNERS, Stay Awake - London Grammar, We are Infinite - The Lighthouse and the Whaler - These tracks are ordered to somewhat flow into one another and cover Fig and Adaine's emerging friendship. Treehouse's solemn energy and lyrics about friendship really capture the vibe of two ostracized people beginning to bond on a deeper level, while Someone to You portrays the powerful upswing the two begin to feel compared to before they met. Stay Awake and We are Infinite feel like a very topical songs, with lyrics that really hit home, while also pulling back to the hopeful-yet-melancholy atmosphere that dominates this portion of the fic.

Trouble (the boy who cried "I am a wolf") by Clans - A devastatingly sad song for a devastatingly sad moment in the fic. When Adaine rejects Fig, Fig's initial reaction isn't anger; it's confusion and sadness. Fig's first thought isn't "how dare she," but "what if she's right?" This track really paints a picture of her grief and confusion. All I Wanted - Paramore - While we don't get to see the entirety of Fig's grieving progress, we see where it ends up, which allows us to draw a line from where she started. As Fig's grief turns to anger, her confusion remains, no matter how much she wished she could put it aside. It just didn't make sense. Something wasn't right. And because of that, she doesn't get to move all the way on like she would be able to if it was a clean break.

Sleeping - Gigi Perez - One part of being neurodivergent that doesn't come up nearly enough is how differently we process grief. I feel like this track is an incredible description of the grieving process for us, and really encapsulates what Fig would be feeling as her anger and grief and confusion begin to temper and fade into dull, half remembered emotions. Even when you don't want it to, time does heal all wounds.

Never Love an Anchor - Crane Wives - This track is, for me, Fig's acceptance of Adaine's betrayal, and her finally feeling as though it is behind her. A distant memory and a lesson learned.

Yes I'm Changing - Tame Impala - This song is a continuance of the prior's themes of acceptance and moving on, specifically, I see this track as being something of an anthem for the first chapter after the time skip. Fig has moved on and really grown into herself. She's confident, capable, and Independent. Black Sheep - Metric - Adaine's back. In person. But it's been long enough that the heartbreak is gone. Just anger at this half remembered acquaintance from a lifetime ago who wronged her and disappeared... or at least that's what Fig tells herself. Feels (Jai Wolf remix) - Kiiara, Monster - Paramore, Broken Over You - Grace Mitchell - These tracks for me encapsulate the back and forth between Adaine and Fig's perspectives over the next few chapters. Adaine is heartbroken and torn between her conditioning and her heart, while Fig's anger only builds as Adaine avoids her and actively seems to be involved in some shady business.

Little Lion Man - Mumford and Sons, Love Love Love - Of Monsters and Men - These two tracks back to back are representative of the most powerful moment in the entire fic; when Adaine and Fig go to the beach where Fig first found the bottle, and the two attempt to talk. While we the audience want to see our two heroines kiss and make up, for the two of them, even in this powerful moment of reconciliation, serious harm has been done to both of them, and their traumas are incredibly apparent to each other, leaving them in this unsure state of wanting to rebuild the bridge but neither knowing just how badly damaged it looks from the other side. There is an understanding that things can never be the way they were before. In fact, chances are they'll never be close. But they have to try; if not to set things right between the two of them, at least to work together to keep their past from hurting others, and hoping that that's enough. beyond this point, the rest of the playlist is a bit of a jumble of music that I felt fit the vibe of the fic, be it lyrics or tone or both, until the last one:

The Night We Met - Lord Huron - If I had a nickel for every time this track was powerfully used during a formal dance scene to show a relationship likely broken beyond repair where the couple love each other, but it may not be enough, I'd have two nickels. This song, if you hadn't guessed already, is in my mind a perfect fit for the Ambassador's Ball scene, specifically the moment in which Fig and Adaine speak before putting their plan into motion. What's your favourite Niko moment in DBDA? ❤️

I need you to know this question is evil and the more time I spent on it the more difficult I found it to answer.

Do I choose one of those little moments that just makes me smile and think “I love her so much” every time I watch? The comment about the lighthouse reminding her of a fish sticks commercial she loves? The way she decorated Jenny’s shop in episode 5? The “are you the Cat King?” moment? Those and so many more are absolutely perfect.

Do I choose a big moment that shows what an amazing character she is and how we should all have a Niko Sasaki in our lives (and could all learn to be better people from her)? Like how she told Edwin that boys can like other boys? Or how she insisted on trying to rehabilitate the Sprites after they tried to kill her? Or how she insisted on going to help save the boys knowing full well that she’d probably die?

Basically, my favorite Niko moment changes from moment to moment, from hour to hour, from day to day. One day it will be her insisting on listening to Tragic Mick’s story. The next day it will be the delightful little thing she does when she puts her sunglasses back on in episode 5. And then it will be her giving Edwin the piece of red glass for courage. The day after that it will be “Go Gray Wake Whalers!”

Niko is a constant delight and choosing a favorite moment with her is like choosing a favorite star in the sky (I’m sure some people have them, but I do not).

I have absolutely 0 idea how to post about AU ideas so I’m just… gonna propose it like this

you’ve heard of Ultrakill … you’ve heard of Dredge … but now I present to you… ULTRADREDGE (name pending.)

- Ferryman MC

- Idk if it takes place in Hell or not, maybe an alternate Hell or something

Main concept

After crashing his Ferry and being rescued by a mysterious siren figure (Gabriel,) the Ferryman finds himself in a remote archipelago. Having to work his way back up with faith and selling fish to the local town, he tasks himself with unraveling the secrets of the isles and finding his savior once more.

Further ideas — Characters

- Gabriel could be a more classic Siren, aka the harpy-like ones

- V1, alternatively, could be a more classic Mermaid / Mermaidic biological machine. Like the Deity, he’d be the cause of the aberrations and influence of evil, both intentionally and as a byproduct of existing

- V2 could work as both the wandering merchant and the Collector, helping the Ferryman on his journey. It would be cool if he was something like a selkie with a connection to V1. Maybe he’s even hunting his estranged brother White Whale Style (WHIIITE WHAAALE HOLY GRAAAAAAILL—)

- Minos Prime could potentially be both the old mayor and the lighthouse keeper

- Sisyphus Prime could potentially be the retired whaler

This is just the basic concept and needs a lot of work but yayyy wow we need more Mer-AUs in Ultrakill… if anyone is even vaguely intrigued by this idea lmk!!

I think there should be a Dishonored TV show.

Imagine this: The Series follows several POV characters: Corvo (duh, probably in a low chaos run with some deaths), Emily (duh, little girl and the horrible no good very bad day, we see how she deals with the conspiracy and it can give some background on the villains), Daud (big regrets, has his whole Delilah story which, for TV reasons, happens at the same time as Corvo's revenge plot so the series can cut between them), and lastly Billie (lovestory with Delilah, betrayal of Daud, mercy in the end)

There can be amazing parallels between Corvo's low chaos revenge and Daud's quest for redemption, with a tense confrontation in Episode 8/9. Delilah as this secret foil that Corvo doesn't even know about, for dramatic purposes Daud has to defeat her in the last episode, so there can be a moment where the audience doesn't quite know if the Emily Corvo just rescued is still Emily. (For dramatic purposes this also needs to be the high chaos ending where Emily almost falls to her death, even though we're in mostly low chaos)

The Series (rough draft):

Episode 1: Corvo returns from his trip. Jess is murdered, Emily abducted. Title Screen. 6 months later. Corvo is being tortured in Coldridge. Daud is depressed and guiltridden. Billie is unimpressed. Episode ends with Corvo breaking out of Coldridge.

Episode 2: Corvo meets the Loyalists. Daud meets the Outsider who gives him the name "Delilah". Also he turns down contracts. Billie expresses her disapproval (again) and leaves the hideout to cool off. Emily is being held captive by the Pendletons who are being creepy and she tries to find a way out. Corvo gains the Mark of the Outsider and the Heart.

Episode 3: Corvo goes after Campbell, rescuing Martin along the way. Daud starts investigating (slaughterhouse). Billie is angry and leaves the hideout, meeting up with a lover who is afterwards revealed to be Delilah (her first appearance). Emily almost gets away from her captors, but is caught at the last second.

Episode 4: Corvo goes to the Golden Cat to rescue Emily. Daud investigates the Timshs. Billie scemes with Delilah to overthrow Daud. Episode ends with Corvo reuniting with Emily.

Episode 5: The Whaler hideout is overrun by Overseers. Billie reveals her betrayal, fights Daud and escapes. Corvo has a nice bonding moment with Emily. Corvo kidnaps Sokolov. Emily talks with the loyalists and gets the vibes that something is not right here.

Episode 6: The Boyle's party. Corvo identifies the right Boyle Lady and deals with her. Billie returns to Delilah who comforts her about having failed to kill Daud. Daud recovers from her betrayal. Emily has nightmares about Corvo dying.

Episode 7: Corvo goes to dispatch Burrows. Emily listens in on the Loyalists and their plans. Daud goes looking for a boat, and then for Lizzy Stride. Delilah reveals the beginning of her painting to Billie. Corvo returns to the Hounds Pit Pub and Emily tries to warn him, but is held back and locked in her room. Corvo is poisoned, Episode ends on him passing out.

Episode 8: Samuel drops Corvo in the Flooded District. Daud returns and finds Corvo. Emily is angry and ready to throw hands with the "loyalists", gets threatened. Bille and Delilah prepare for the ritual, Delilah tells Billie that afterwards she can go and kill Daud for real this time. Corvo wakes up and confronts Daud. They duel, Daud loses, asks for his life, Corvo doesn't say anything, but doesn't kill him. Corvo returns to the Pub.

Episode 9: Emily feels all alone in a cruel world, believing Corvo to be dead. Corvo and Daud both prepare for their final missions in a cool montage. Corvo infiltrates the Fort/Lighthouse and deals with Pendleton and Martin. Daud arrives at Brigmore manor, infiltrates it and finds the entrance to the void. Corvo goes on to search for Emily, her room is empty. Daud talks to the Outsider and confronts Billie and Delilah. Corvo finds Emily and Havelock. Daud fights Billie while Delilah (almost) completes her ritual. Corvo shoots Havelock and catches Emily. Daud injures Billie and goes to stop Delilah, bright flash of light. Emily looks up at Corvo with a strange smile. Delilah has vanished. Daud asks Billie if she's done it. Billie is angry as Delilah is gone, but has a heart to heart with Daud where they leave on relatively okay terms. Daud breathes a sigh of relief. Emily smiles and hugs Corvo, it's clear that she's still herself. Epilogue narration that everything turned out fine. End credit scene of Delilah very angry, but also very alive, in the Void.

Why 9 episodes, you ask? Well because I was trying for 10 but my planning which I came up with just now only wanted 9. 8 or 10 would make more sense from a TV standpoint though. I just think this would be such a cool series...

I'd like to hear something about the skin wip

Hi, hello! Skin is my actual Lighthouse AU after someone sent me this super funny ask registering their displeasure with my choice of fandom for the Seventies SF AU, named Lighthouses. I'm very easily encouraged. Even when being discouraged for something I'm not actually doing. I laughed about doing one and then went and wrote in Untitled 1:

Lighthouse Keeper AU - Hob is lighthouse keeper, Dream is human or else eldritch sea creature - or SEEMS human but is a selkie/changeling who will return? Either star-crossed romance or like, gothic romance - lots of gay sex and desire and the sea, old-timey language, lanterns, etc, wailing wind, Forbidden Acts Isolation, alienation from other men, being Slightly Off, loneliness, exploring where you shouldn’t Hob fucks selkie who is also Dream?? Why would Dream be lighthouse keeper? Maybe he murders them but like, Hob found his skin or something and he has to pretend to be a human lighthouse keeper Hob finding journal entries suggesting imminent and terrifying demise of former keepers, can link them to Dream in some way

I also wrote 'all dialogue should be in iambic pentameter' but we'll pretend I didn't.

What can I say about it? I think it can be best described by the fact I scrolled through the WIP as it is now, a collection of scraps and research curios and a couple half-written scenes, and came across:

Beware the shore on haar and hoolan night, beware the sea of star-lost whalers’ plight

Which I have no, and I mean NO recollection of writing, but has no results when I google it. That's sort of the energy I want for the whole thing. Gothic horror fever dream. Claustrophobia and a locked-room mystery. Men driven to terror and mad loneliness and violence. Letters that arrive too late. Thievery and suspicion and revenge. Greed and possession. Becoming/loving the monstrous.

Fiddler's Green is an after-life where there is perpetual mirth, a fiddle that never stops playing, and dancers who never tire. In 19th-century English maritime folklore, it was a kind of after-life for sailors who had served at least fifty years at sea. important that lighthouse is decaying, used to be nice, now is not gothic theme of ascent/descent with ladder images of death etc claustrophobic, sunless environment, action at night or in fog - no sun imagination over reason

I've never done gothic before and I'm super excited to explore it with this story! I'm going for something like, old and musty smelling, sort of The Terror, lighthouse-edition, except with less death and more monster-fucking. A sluttier The Lighthouse (2019).

mermaid au where river was tossed overboard legs bound from a trafficking ship and becomes a siren. adam is a whaler who sacrificed her old crew to hungry sea carnivores to survive and knew loey before she was taken. they bond over their mutual #crazygirlism and she helps lure people to her like an angler fish/lighthouse through the power of joint psychological warefare. audrey is a client of the traffickers who thinks siren loey on her killing maiming rampage is the most interesting thing she’s seen in AGESS.
