“There are three unforgivable curses which have been branded illegal by the World Federation of Wizards. Anyone caught casting one will receive a lifetime imprisonment sentence.” N.E.W.Ts Defence Against the Dark Arts was getting interesting this year. Professor Adams was by far the best professor they’d had in the subject. They’d had a new one at the beginning of each new school year. Something horrific always seemed to happen to them at the end of the school year. That was one job Remus would never agree to. “The Cruiatus curse is particularly nasty. When cast on a person, they aren’t actually causing any physical harm, it is all mental. The curse convinces the witch or wizard that they are feeling intense pain like they have never felt before. Many have used this curse as it can be cast over and over on the victim. Though excessive use of the curse on a person will lead to insanity,” he felt Sirius stiffen next to him. Too late Remus remembered that Sirius was well acquainted with the curse. He slipped his hand across Sirius’s thigh and covered his clenched fist. 

“Shh, it’s alright,” he said in as calming a tone as he could whisper. 

“The Imperius curse, the second on the list, gives the caster complete control over the victim. They are able to convince the person under the curse to do things they would never do in normal circumstances,” Sirius was shaking now. Remus wondered how many times Walburga had used it on him. Sirius’s head dropped onto Remus’s shoulder. Remus moved Sirius’s hand into his free one and wrapped his arm around Sirius, holding him close. 

“The final curse is the killing curse, also known as Avada Kedavra. This curse causes instant death. There are no known counter-curses to it. It is one of the most powerful curses known to wizardkind. If anyone starts casting this curse anywhere near you, don’t fight, just run,” Remus looked up at Professor Adams. They’d never had a teacher warn them like that. 

The bell went and Remus hurried to get their things packed away and get Sirius outside where he could breathe.

When you think about some of the things that Harry did and went through, even just while he was at Hogwarts, you probably get the feeling that some force out there did not want this poor kid to survive into adulthood. But one particular instance of this that I think about is when he uses his Patronus while time traveling to save Sirius. Now, not only is he completely untried in fending off that many dementors, but he is also trying to defend his godfather and himself. And he fully believes that his dad is going to step out of the forest and cast his Patronus charm (or be the Patronus form maybe) because at this point, he doesn’t know his corporeal Patronus form is a stag. It’s a good thing he runs largely on impulsivity and spite, because he doesn’t have the information or skills (knowingly at least) needed to produce the stag and save himself and Sirius. He casts the spell impulsively, with the realization that it has to be him, but all he knows is that the form is a stag, not that it’s his!

So. With limited information and a total lack of certainty in his ability, he finds out that his Patronus is, in fact, a stag, just like his dad’s. But the narrative was really forcing him to be magically powerful, confident, and desperate enough to save Sirius and his last self from the dementors.
