basically, all magic uses mana, if not the mana from the self (bodily energy), then the mana of other livng beings (animal sacrifices, or plants etc.), making a spell often took years of labor and time to cultivate crops or rear livestock for this purpose, as using one's mana for too much kinda just... kills you? (cycle of life) as society progressed, companies developed techologies that didn't "use" mana, as in it just kinda worked without the old wizarding stuff, naturally, the people loved that shit however, unbeknowst to the public, this new magic actually takes mana away from the environment without being replenished, and hence, decay began to sweep through the lands now, those who can afford to use magic use it, as old techniques begin to die out <friend wrote this!!

Lysander and Ronan are old magic system supporters (Lys somewhat supports new mag, wears a ring designed by the newer companies for more magic use),

bodily mana can be gained by working the body (physically demanding tasks) or by consumption (fuel for energy),

school systems support/are more rooted in old magic systems, eg different classes to hone different kinds of magic. PE is (unfortunately) mandatory in order to keep students (and probably staff) alive in terms of mana usage (always replenishing bodily energy),

Lysander has… probably gotten fired from multiple jobs, maybe unemployed. Ronan is student occupation,

Ronan goes to a government school, due to being an orphan. Lysander’s parents are alive but not well (like. They just fight with each other.),

Lysander lives somewhere near a river or farm (old mag system thing), whereas Ronan lives in the city (she does kickboxing classes there),

character goals and how they’ll be stopped at some point: Ronan wants to be surrounded by people who genuinely care for her, and also wants to use her powers for good. This is paused as she (almost successfully) gets manipulated by (insert antagonist) who also uses umbrakinesis into tricking her into using her magic for bad :( // Lysander’s goal is….. undefined, but what stops him is he just dies at some point :/
