MDZS/CQL Prompt #5: Wangxian - childhood friends reconnect

Wwx and Lwj were neighbours as kids and good friends

During a normal fight with his brother, when they are around 8-10, Jc tells Wwx that "Lwj is only nice to you because he is in love with you".

Wwx, who is not yet aware that he is not straight™ from then on feels uncomfortable around Lwj and starts to distance himself from his friend (I imagine Lwj to be around 2-3 years older than wwx in this au, as younger children you're not interested in having a crush on you might be 'cute/adorable' while older people usually isn't 😅)

They lose contact completely as they grow older (either because they've both finished school and move out, or because jfm and yzy split up and jfm moves out with the kids (at least with wwx as yzy doesn't want him to stay),...)

Jyl moves into the house once she starts her own family and lwjs brother lives in the neighbouring house

When they're both in their twenties wwx visits his sister and is outside playing with his nephew, when he sees Lwj in the neighboring garden (maybe buried in a heap of bunnies? Or just standing there looking at him and waving shyly?)

Wwx is overjoyed to see Lwj again after such a long time (and holy shit when did this cute and shy kid get so fucking hot?!)

They start talking (or wwx does) and wwx drops that he is not straight™ (eg. By mentioning his most recent breakup with his boyfriend) and they end up going on a date and (finally) getting together.

Summary:  The marketplace was too loud, too much, and Lan Zhan couldn’t breathe.

So he ran from his brother and uncle and hid in a back alley, which was not as empty as he thought.

Enter the dirtiest boy Lan Zhan had ever met - a boy who called himself Wei Ying.

(AKA Lan Zhan brings Wei Ying back to Cloud Recesses and this is their childhood as they grow up together.  Spans ages 8-15, ending right before the lectures )

My comments:  omg, THEY’RE SUCH TINY WIDDLE CUTIES aaaarrrrggghhhh!

Lan Zhan is autistic-coded, which means he’s easily (and wildly) overstimulated and often utterly tongue-tied. He’s got a twitch in his hands that he can’t control when he’s too stressed (which leads to some bullying). Wei Ying is a beam of sunshine, of course, and he and Lan Zhan are inseparable from the get-go (although his carefree ways cause baby lz soooo much stress).

The years pass, and the boys remain intertwined, growing together. Lan Zhan suffers a few fits of jealousy, because it’s hard to share his Wei Ying, who is bubbly and outgoing and still collects friends (like grouchy Jiang Cheng). But he does learn, and his own world is expanded that way, too.

In the latter half of the story, puberty creeps up, and Lan Zhan starts to realize that his feelings for Wei Ying aren’t brotherly at all. Wei Ying, because he is a disaster bi, doesn’t notice at all, which leads to pining and angst, because teens, amirite?

A lovely story, and I ADORED them as children, and it’s such a delight that it got finished. (Ends just before canon begins.)

In the end, all the chaos starts because Lan Jingyi gets offended.

“What do you mean you haven’t heard of my uncle?” Lan Jingyi demands. 

He glares down at Wei Sizhui from the top bunk. Lan Jingyi and the other two boys in Wei Sizhui’s cabin got into a fight over who would get the top bunks, and after several heated rounds of rock-paper-scissors, they went to Lan Jingyi and Ouyang Zizhen.

“Stop shouting!” Jin Rulan yells from the other side of the room. He yanks his headphones off and directs his own glare at Lan Jingyi, who scowls back.

“He said he hasn’t heard of Hanguang-jun!” Lan Jingyi yells right back.

Jin Rulan frowns. “The singer? So?”

“I’m sorry,” Wei Sizhui interrupts, before they can get into a fight. “My dad and I travel a lot, so I’ve never stuck around in one place long enough…”

Lan Jingyi frowns, this time with suspicion. “What does your dad do?”

“Uh.”

He’s a genius-level hacker wanted for a felony he didn’t commit and he’s been on the run from at least two organizations for the past nine years.

“…He’s a computer engineer.”
