I’ve been working on this post on and off for the last few months. I always intended to post it during Pride Month, and hey, here we are. I’ve got a lot going on in my life right now, so this might be the last book rec post for quite a while.

When possible, I’m linking to the Queer SFF Book Database since it has information on trigger warnings and links to reviews by queer readers. When not in the database of 6/15/20, I’ll be linking to Goodreads. Links are all below the cut.

Do not recommend cis authors on this post. This post is for centering trans and nonbinary authors. Please note that trans people write all sorts of stories and protagonists, and these books don’t automatically have trans or queer protagonists.

I think Zarra would take two books she's been meaning to read and the small pocket knife Nathaniel gave her. I'm assuming if there's food, there's a water source. She loves to swim so she would definitely take a dive in the water. Knowing Zarra she would dive in to exploring the island. I do think she'd do her due diligence a little bit though. It wouldn't be a head first dive. She's a florist and loves exploring nature so that's where her heads at although I do think she'd encounter trouble someway somehow. I can also see her using her powers to spring flowers all over the place when she's bored.

Nathaniel would definitely take the chain Zarra gave him as a "sorry I nearly killed you that one time" gift. He'd take the enchanted signet ring his father gave him. Lucky for him, he can turn that signet ring into any weapon he chooses. Lastly, I think he would take the "The Black Journal", a book passed along to him when he was younger and just starting out as a PI in the magical world. Even though it's a journal, it reads as this grand adventure book to him and he admires and sees a lot of himself in the hero and his journey.

It's interesting how Nathaniel would take a lot of sentimental and Zarra would not. I think it's because Zarra would see it as a vacation. Kind of like "oh well, I'm here, might die... Might as well go for a swim". Nathaniel is like "Might die, I'm going to have to fight, it will probably be bloody and ruthless". So in a way, he's not taking the things he'd occupy himself with but the things he'd want to die with. I think Nathaniel is always on ten so he's cautious but Zarra... She'll fight if it comes to it but she really doesn't want to. She's still fighting that side of her.

This was really fun to think about! This gave me a scene idea...

What Am I Currently Researching?

I’ve decided to pull back on writing “The Woman” to do a little research. Besides, how can I write about my characters moving around Basel City if I don’t have a firm understanding of Basel City itself? 

I’m not exactly starting with the subway station in Basel City but I got stuck on a scene recently and decided to do more research. It occurred to me that I wasn’t thinking about how exactly the mages in Basel City move. Of course, they can open portals if they wish to be able to travel between the city as well as different dimensions although the latter is very very rare and also highly dangerous. Regarding opening portals to move to different parts of the city, that is also rare mostly because a lot of mages don’t actually know how to do it. 

 I like the idea of subways that run on magic. The mages have enchanted ID cards that allow them to enter these stations/train cars and travel to where they want to go. 

Now, I’m thinking about how this subway system will work...especially since there is a non-mage civilian subway system as well. I admit that I’ve never lived in any cities that had much of a subway system so I know nothing lol. I’ve been doing some digging on the NYC Subway System and how it works. I’m also playing around with creating a transit map but...whew I am so far away from that right now (and it’s a lot). 

I really like the look of the City Hall Station in New York and I’ve been referring back to it for inspiration as I sneak-write some scenes:

It is absolutely gorgeous. Seeing how City Hall is now abandoned, maybe there’s an abandoned station the mages use? I’m still figuring out the logistics but there ya go!

I like The Deathless. It’s a strong name for them and immediately piques my interest. It also brings up strong imagery. I’ve never heard it used in YA/NA but even if it is, your story is different and unique and you’ll put your own unique spin on them. I’m excited to read your WIP! They sound badass! 

what would you call a group of mythical warrior women?

in my newest wip i’ve called them the deathless because it fits perfectly with the larger plot and sounds badass as hell but i’m worried deathless is overused in ya/na

Did I need this information? No. Will I now create a character/scene/situation within my book that puts this information to good use? Yes. 

Archery information for writers that no one asked for but probably some of you need and I like talking about archery, so here it is.

when you put an arrow on the string, the verb is called “nocking” i.e. eyes glued on the target, he nocked the arrow

also the part of the arrow that gets put onto the string is called the nock. depending on the type of arrow this can be a piece of plastic glued into the arrow, or with wood or bamboo arrows it can be carved into the shaft of the arrow itself

you do not close an eye when aiming or shooting; you see better with both eyes open.

everyone has a dominant eye that more naturally your brain focuses with. that determines whether you are right or left handed when shooting, and doesn’t necessarily correlate to whether the person is right or left handed in anything else

so if you’re writing a character who has difficulty seeing out of one eye, take that into account when they are shooting

if they are right eye dominant, they hold the bow with their left hand and draw the string with their right. if they are left eye dominant, they hold the bow with their right hand and draw the string with their left

if they shoot left, the quiver sits on their left side/hip/thigh. shoot right - right side quiver.

there are several different ways to draw, if you are writing something historical or in a specific region, then do research on that style of archery. but for a generic place to start that is a more universal way of drawing a bow, here are some things to include

the chin stays down. raising your chin will fuck up your aim

the pointer finger on your draw hand rests on the side of your chin/jaw, and the string of the bow will touch the tip of the archer’s nose

weight is on the balls of your feet, leaning slightly forward off your heels

if it is an older bow/barebow, there is not usually a place for the arrow to rest on the bow. this means the arrow rests on the archer’s hand. if they are not wearing a glove on that hand, the fletchings (that’s the feathers on the arrow) will more than likely slice their hand when firing. this scars.

so if you’re wanting to describe someone observing and archer’s hands (hands are hot, don’t @ me) they would see a silver scar about halfway between the pointer finger knuckle and palm of the person’s hand. (turn your hand vertical and trace down the length of your pointer toward your thumb and stop next to the knuckle. that spot there.)

most archers wear something to protect their fingers on the hand that draws the bow. even with that, they have callouses. without it, a lot of callouses, scars, and blisters.

most common draw uses three fingers on the string: pointer, middle, ring. the arrow sits between the pointer and middle. just like where the draw point is, this is not universal and do research if you’re doing something culturally important.

barebow means that the bow is bare of any instruments. no sight, no weights, etc. the most basic/traditional form of bow

a recurve bow is anything where the tips of the bow curve back around forward, away from the archer

a compound is what you think of as a modern hunting bow, and is recognisable by having wheels at the ends and three strings

arrows have three fletchings that form a triangle, the point faces the archer so that the flat of the arrow will pass the flat of the bow on release. the arrow sits on the side of the bow facing the archer

archers with a larger/raised chest will sometimes where a chest protect so that the string does not catch when firing (this is regardless of gender, i know several cis-men who need it as well)

string can also catch on the forearm that is holding the bow and creates bruises and welts if you don’t wear a protector. modern ones are small plastic and cover just the spot, with elastic holding it in place. traditional ones are leather and wrap all the way around, lacing up on the back of your arm like a corset.

there is literally so much more, but i feel like this is plenty to get you started, and as always, feel free to drop an ask in my box if you need something more!

Ooooo Esil! Okay, that song you started with already gave me some theories! Esil definitely comes off bad from the start. Why do I feel like they would be evil and fun though too. Definitely in a wreaking havoc but enjoying it kind of way. Yesss I love Natural (and I also have it on one of my character playlists lol). Okay see, songs like “Let’s Kill Tonight” don’t help. Such a fun song lol. These songs also give me a mischievous vibe too. Or I’m imagining those scenes from movies when it’s an action scene slowed down and classical music or fun music is playing while utter destruction and mania is going on. Awww “Broken Crown” is a sadder song. That’s the song they play during the aftermath in my head. 

Okay, your book sounds so much fun! I’m on Chara’s playlist now! Let me find out Chara is a little crazy because I’m getting that vibe (edit: not too much now that I listened to the whole playlist) I’m also getting some great new songs for my personal playlists so thank you. Yeah Chara just seems like they don’t give a damn. Very much I’m going to do whatever the heck I want and you’re free to come along...or not. Definitely going after what they want. I really like “This Mountain”. It’s such a feel good song and a little slower than the others but still has that confident vibe.
