THE TOBIAS RANT

My time to shine. Here's all the reasons why I ABOSULTLY HATE Toby's character in the MBK audio dramas.

Okay, first things first. Toby was GREAT in Needles And Smiles. He was an intriguing character, and I found myself laughing at most of his lines. I loved him! For most of the audio drama. And then we get to the ending.

I will give Toby some credit and say he had a point about David. Why should Jeff continue to cling to someone who essentially left him to rot in an abusive asylum for FIVE YEARS? (Jeff was taken to the asylum in 2009 and escaped in 2014, canonically. The timeline in this series is whack, I know.) MY PROBLEM is that just because Jeff decides he doesn't want to be the hound of an eldritch being, Toby gets mad at him and ABANDONS HIM. Acting as if those last five years together didn't mean shit to him. No wonder Jeff was hurt by that! (Hurt my TicciJeff/TobyJeff heart, why don't you T^T) Then in Jeffrey's Dead: The Final Sleep, Toby has the audacity to pull the "my friend, my brother" card on him when they're all in the mines. And I just picture Jeff's reaction was this:

Me too, Jeffrey. Me too.

But what finally cemented my loathing for him was his behavior towards Jane in both The Blood Of Jeff The Killer and The Wrath Of Jeff The Killer.

In Blood, after a close call with a bunch of Jeff cultists in an abandoned police station, Toby gets fed up and tells Jane that she should drop the whole "Jeff is back" thing and they should just leave. To which??? Dude, first of all, you and Jane have been hunting people like Jeff down to protect the town. THAT'S WHAT YOU WANTED TO DO. Secondly, there's obviously SOMETHING going on, did you just forget you were chased by a bunch of mini Jeffs not even a few minutes ago? Thirdly, you know Jane has been having multiple nightmares about Jeff. With how frequent it's starting to become, don't you think that it means something? Jane, like the best girl she is, points some of this out. They couldn't just leave after what they had just witnessed. And then Toby says a line that makes me feel genuinely pissed to this day: "You know... my sister would have come with me." BASICALLY CONFIRMING JEFF'S WARNING TAUNT TOWARDS JANE THAT TOBY ONLY STUCK AROUND/CARES ABOUT HER BECAUSE SHE LOOKS LIKE HIS DEAD SISTER.

What makes this worse, cause yeah, it gets worse, Toby only comes back to help because he finds out Jeff has actually come back. Not because he felt guilty or realized that he was wrong.

Then in Wrath, which literally only takes place mere minutes after the ending of Blood (and I will openly admit is my least favorite audio drama, and am mainly going off my memory), Toby leaves again after the death of Jack (the character played by BaptismOnFire, not LJ). Like-?! Has this man literally learned anything at all??? And while Jane and Professor Englund are getting kidnapped by the SCP Foundation, where is he? Gone back to Slenderman.

ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?!?!

Seeing how Toby was handled in this series honestly makes me frustrated. He never got any character development, never learned from his mistakes, and was just a terrible character in general. All he was literally summed up by is that he's an asshole, he hates his dad, and is a bad friend.

Some people have pointed out to me that the cast could have possibly been working on towards an arc where Toby finally gets the courage to leave his "abusive parent" (Slender), but with no confirmation and the series being dead for ten years now, I think we're forever gonna be left on a chaotic cliffhanger and never know the truth. But yeah! That's my Toby rant. Please feel free to share your own thoughts, and thanks for listening to my ramble lol.

do you have any thoughts on Jane Richardson and Jane Arkensaw?

Honestly I need to like re-read and re-learn all the different variations of like half of the creepypasta characters, 9 year old me coulda told you that in a heartbeat LMAO I don't really remember much about either of them besides the fact that they're associated with Jeff and hate him, one was his neighbor and got her family killed by him, as well as severely injured hence receiving the mask, and the other Jane was an assassin or something??

I could not tell you, I don't really have an opinion on either of them except for the fact that they are just more characters branched off from Jeff's really generic story 😭

FIRE OF THE MIND - COIL

GENERAL

𓃾 Growing up, it was only Evelyn, Millie and Toby in the unsettling town named Forest Lawn. Before Frank came around, everything was perfect. Sure, they weren't the wealthiest family, but they did what they could.

𓃾 I like to think Toby has many fond memories with his mother and sister when he was younger, before Frank showed. They were a close family, who used to do everything together. Some of these memories include hours worth of playing Mario Kart and Just Dance with Millie, baking with her and his mom, movie nights which consisted of cheesy comedies, and classic Disney movies. His favourite was Homeward Bound - he loved animals, still does.

𓃾 Unfortunately as Frank was introduced and brought into the picture, it was really easy to forget those memories, being surrounded by constant stress and anxiety. From then on, he and everyone else were constantly walking on eggshells around Frank. Millie and Toby 100% would sneak into eachothers rooms at night and shit talk Frank, even making fun of him.

𓃾 Toby often tried to keep himself busy and away from home, to get away from Frank. He would always try to include Millie in those plans, so she wouldn't deal with him alone. A lot of these plans included Danny, Toby's best friend. The three were a trio, often finding things to do, wether it was staying after school to volunteer for some stupid club, cleaning after an activity, studying, or generally hanging out at Danny's place. Mr. Crothers loved Toby and Millie like his own children. Often times when they'd walk back home, they would taking the longer routes, slowing their steps. Anything to postpone their arrival to his wrath.

𓃾 Because of this, I feel like Toby really likes walking around anywhere and just exploring. he likes to find nice, scenic places, whether it be in the forests or by the lakes. He definitely developed a passion for photography! It gave him something to do, to keep his mind off of his home situation, the pain. He has a photo album under his bed, containing photos of all of the scenery he finds, animals, and very few of Danny, Millie and himself.

𓃾 Toby and Danny had many- MANY sleepovers which consisted of running out to the movie theatre, sneaking snacks in, and playing the shitty arcade games afterwards. Their go to was Mortal Kombat, which is one of Toby's favourite games! He will geek out over the game any chance he gets.

MISCELANEOUS

𓃾 When Toby is hyper focused on something, he often forgets to blink.

𓃾 He has really shaky hands for no apparent reason.

𓃾 He worked at a small record store in the town mall, often looking through dvds in his spare time to rent. Millie also worked in the mall, in a small cafe.

𓃾 Danny was gobsmacked that Toby does't listen to much music, if its on, its on and he'll listen to it kind of thing. So, naturally, Danny forced Toby to listen to everything he could get his hands on. A lot of Green Day, Nirvana and all that jazz.

𓃾 He's a proud hater of Killer Instinct, he insists Mortal Kombat is the best fighter there is, and he will die on that hill.

𓃾 Dude has mega resting bitch face, but is really the friendliest person you'll meet. He has a big heart, though he won't stand anyones bullshit.

𓃾 He and Jeff actually lived two streets away from each other and attended the same school, but just never crossed paths until the ward.

If you could pick a creepypasta character to be the next morgue file, which one would you pick? or which emh, creepypasta, or mh character would you like to cameo?

Ooh honestly with David's work he could rewrite any of the creepypastas or mh and emh characters and they'd still end up fucking sick.

I think a really cool take would be Clockwork? Her story in general wasn't all that good and she gets a LOT of hate. I'd really like to see what he'd do with her character and the changes he'd make to her and how she could be incorporated into everything going on in Forest Lawn.

I also feel like either having another episode based solely around Liu would be really interesting, or at least some more Pinehurst sessions with him!! I really liked his character, though some of it was touched in Jeff's story, having something focused solely on Liu would be really cool to have a better understanding of his character :]

In general I think it'd be cool to have some subtle mentions of other creepypastas but not have their whole story, like in Toby's episode I believe on the tv in the background it's talking about some guy missing kidneys, hinting towards Eyeless Jack's existence, Toby's hallucination including smile dog, small things like that would be really cool, so that other creepypastas are still involved just not entirely focused on!!

Random ass question but I'm really curious, who is your favorite character (or characters) from the morgue files? :D

OH MY GOODNESS

I can actually talk about The Morgue Files for hours on end about characters and the lore and just everything in general, it's genuinely one of my favorite pieces of media and David Near has done such an awesome job at bringing these characters to life. My favourite characters are definitely Toby and Jeff (basic ass answer I know (⁠ᗒ⁠ᗩ⁠ᗕ⁠) )

I really like his take on those two!!

With Toby's character, I really like how he's recognized that something is wrong, whether it be him or something wrong with the town. I like how he was made into a genuine person who deals with day to day conflicts like most of us would and also touched on heavier subjects, bringing more recognition to the people who deal with abuse. We get to see the effects of the town on him, with Slenderman and how he drives his victims to insanity. As a person, I love how we get to see his relationships with other people, like Danny! We see them messing around, getting a feel that Toby's humor is sarcasm and what not, the small things like that! He's shown in a light that he is a good person, who was dealt a shitty hand in life. I love him ♡

NOW JEFF ON THE OTHER HAND

I love that bastard so much. I really really enjoy and appreciate David's characterization for Jeff, making him scary, disgusting and just a born monster. We have so many versions of Jeff, where he was just a 13 year old who got bullied into insanity, or he slipped on soap and got acid burns, and all the other stories. They're all very under developed, and the 'creepypasta' and scary aspect of his character has just been removed, people often making him some hot, pretty emo boy 😭 or there's Jeff Keaton who just needs a way more solid and developed story line. Jeff Mason however is NON of that and I live for it. We need more scary characters!! Jeff in The Morgue Files is eerie, he's dealing with his own struggles, confused as well and it just worsens the more the story progresses, but you know that he's always been like this, since early childhood. He had a normal family, as mentioned in the Pinehurst session, he's well aware that he was just born evil. He's a freak, he's disgusting, he doesn't have a care in the world, he's basically shameless. That man is so ratty and grimey, physically and mentally. Jeff Mason is the first version of Jeff that had genuinely freaked me out and made me feel uncomfortable, in my eyes, the Jeff we always needed to bring justice to that horror aspect!!

as someone who was in the creepypasta fandom since like… 2011… let me hold your hand as i tell you something: do not take this stuff so damn seriously.

this fandom was created by people of different ages who just had fun. some made scary pictures, some told creepy stories. some made mmds videos, some made memes.

let people have fun. that’s the point of being in a fandom – having fun. let people make self-inserts, let people make oc’s. all creepypastas are OC’S, YOU DO KNOW THAT, RIGHT?? RIGHT??? if you cringe so hard – scroll it down! the amount of people that whine, complain and tell others to stop doing all that because “uhh um ☝🏻🥸 akchually slendermansion isn’t real so unvalid + cringe + l + ratio” is astounishing.

if you want to make yourself a creepypasta story – you go, kid. if you want to write a 100500 pages, agnst, hurt/comfort, slowburn with your oc and jeff the killer – pop off. and obv i’m not talking about folks who are weird with their content in general (yes, mishi-mishi, i’m looking at you), i’m talking about everyone who just wants to be a part of this creative buzz and do their own thing. therefore, here is my blessing: you do you! who cares if it’s cringe in our mighty year of 2025. literally no one. slay.
