Failing miserably you go through every box in your head to bring out themes you tucked away delicately, over the years, just for these kind of 'special' dorky occasions. But, all you can manage out, are situationally inept gestures comprising of - "Ahh...well...", A blank stare into the wall (which fortunately, the recipient cannot receive) and A desperate search for a rescue mission. It has been there since the time of Ahom Kingdom and is used in various walks of life starting from culturally significant occasions, wrapping scriptures in Naamghor (prayer hall), in the magnificent festival of Bihu, as a part of daily household attire, by farmers, as a token of love and respect to visiting guests and many more. From being a piece of tradition it has ventured out in the fusion trend of fashion too! *Sketchy notes on* Mohaloya. What "Durga pujo" feels to a bengali is somewhat equivalent to what "biskhut" (biscuit) feels to chaa (tea). One could do away with each other but it's always magic when together! Today, marks the beginning of "Devi paksha" as they say. A day when the festive spirit starts to bubbles inside. After all, "maa ashche"!!! As a child, every year, this day, I would witness every household up by 4.00am, with excitement in their eyes and passion in their voice while tuning in to " Akashbani" (radio broadcast) on their old radio set and listen to " Mahisashur mordini" narrated by Shri Birendra Krishna Bhadra. Sleep hungry kids like me, would have to be injected with tonic of enthusiasm or sometimes bribed with treats after. But, as years pasted, when I look back, to this day, I miss three of us circling around the radio set every year. Now, smart phones have replaced those radio sets and online streaming sites has promised access to a sea of contents on the go at any even point of time. Hence, we don't need to be up at those pre-dawn hours and we don't need to circle around anymore. But, the charm still breathes... It takes you to a state wherein you are completely one with what you're listening, a state where everything feels precisely placed in a perfect symmetry, where you feel this is all that's real, right at this moment. Until, nearly the end to that beautiful piece..when the clouded honks outside starts to resurface, the banter on the street makes its way to your attention, the lights from the vehicles reflects back on your stationed photo frames.
