Juxtaposition

When they are at the beach, there are other families there, some couples, some single parents. Chris and Buck go into the water, only wading up to Chris’ waist even though Buck is so much taller. Buck carefully holds Chris’ hand to steady him, without being overbearing. Buck says something and Chris laughs throwing his head back in glee at whatever ridiculous thing they are talking about. What Eddie likes the most is when they both come back to him, wet and sandy, with grins as sunny as the beautiful California day on their faces.

“You should come in with us, the water feels great!” Buck says standing over him. He shakes out his hair and droplets land on Eddie, a cool sting against the heat of the sun and Eddie reaches a hand out to pull Buck’s leg so he’s sitting beside him on the towel. He’s getting a little sunburnt and Eddie holds out the sunscreen to him.

“How about you put this on and I’ll come in after?” Eddie says.

Buck gives him a playful eyeroll, Chris matching it as if to say ‘dad! Stop being such a fun killer.’ But Eddie doesn’t mind, he’s with his two favorite people. Buck starts applying sunscreen and Eddie looks across the beach. An elderly couple watches them and when Eddie catches their eye, the woman smiles widely and turns away. He swears she gives him a wink. When people look at them, Eddie always thinks they see something more than just friends.

Buck insists on taking a picture at the end of their beach excursion, the way he does every time they do something together.

“For posterity,” he said with a teasing smile and Eddie couldn’t help but return it. It was impossible not to when Buck’s excitement to just be with them came off him in waves. He is a little sunburnt, very sandy, and soaked from having just been in the ocean with Chris. And Eddie leans against him, probably a little too much to take the picture. Chris is on Buck’s other side and the sun glints in the corner casting a shadow over their faces. It looks like a million of their other pictures and Eddie’s phone pings when Buck sends him the image. The way he always does.

Buck is so bright, so happy, Eddie presses his arm against him from elbow-to-shoulder and leans impossibly closer. Buck’s skin is cool and slick. Eddie wants to wrap himself around him. He nearly does.

W-We really need your help.” Buck’s words sound breathless and strained. “Oh my god, it’s really you… What happened?” The immediate fear she feels for her brother and Eddie is clawing at her. A hundred scenarios pop into her mind with a terrifying colorfulness that is fed by years of answering distress calls. Until she knows exactly what is going on her brain will concoct the most ghastly nightmare she didn’t even know she was capable of making up. “We were caught up in a landslide and now we’re trapped in Eddie’s truck underneath the masses.
