chapter nine - hindsight
aaravos x moon guardian reader

—
aaravos’ pov:
when i saw her lying there, her frail, fragile body, my heart lept like fiddle. for the longest time i wanted to see her, hug her, apologise. bearing the loss of her was nearly impossible but seeing the heartbreak leola had to carry was gut wrenching. watching her night after night, wailing and blaiming herself as she clung onto old drawings and faded memories was too much. i know it wasn’t her fault, but she didn’t. in fact it was mine.
—
in hindsight i should’ve been more attentive to the growing heartache and bitterness in her heart, but it was hard to find in the comfort the day brought. i should’ve continued to compliment and reassure her, but i thought she knew that already; she was like a compass always pointing me in the right direction that i thought she’d always work, that she’d always be fine.
the day i heard of her “betrayal” the only thing i could think of was the first time we met; her radiating beauty and confidence reflecting off the walls with resonance and grace. i could see the explosion and the oraculum from leola’s makeshift pretend kitchen; i watched the colourful display that awoke the stars from their slumber and threatened to attack the sun. they were lined with shadows weilding weapons of people’s nightmares and fears.
that wasn’t her.
she was gentle, like a winter’s light breeze after a cold and hardened storm. she was like the moonlight shining through dark clouds, a rememberance that there was still hope in the dark.
maybe if i had come that day, if i ran to her, she would have never left, maybe then she’d still have been with leola and i. but i didn’t. i was scared. scared to have my memory of her warped. but now i know, loving isn’t about caring for their past; it’s about being with them for their future. in hindsight, i should’ve known to be there, but i wasn’t. now, i won’t make that same mistake.
—
“i’ve always been fighting alone.”
i stared at her, too stunned to speak. all i could mutter were incoherent words and makeshift gibberish.
“no.” with my vision foggy, and face stained with glistening water i looked to see callum.
“callum’s right.” rayla placed a hand on his shoulder. a slight reassurance. i can’t help but wonder, maybe that’s all she needed. “we need to work together, that’s the only way to win.”
a surge of acceptance and agreement erupted but all i could hear was her fragile voice amidst loud thunder.
“no.”
i could longer control my feet as they headed towards her my arms wrapped around like a blanket that had previously been lost.
“please,” my whispers were barely audible but i could no longer take the aching surge, “i’m sorry, please don’t leave again.”
wet droplets ran down my chest as her arms hestantly raised, i held her tighter but her hands rose to my torso and pushed me away.
with rivers down her face, clouds in her eyes,
“no.”

chapter eight - memory
aaravos x moon guardian reader
disclaimer !! i’ve been writing in third person but i’m switching to first person now
(click here for masterlist and synopsis)
<< prev // next >>
—
i felt my body give in as my soul threatened to leave my aching corpse, i could hear muffled screams of concern, something i was never akin to.
“please, please wake up.” my eyes were closed but somehow i could still see, my mind was playing tricks on me -drugging me to a deep slumber.
i could recognise his voice, aaravos. every familiar moment and stolen memory replayed in my mind, they were a constant friend i had during my exile.
the way the people would scream at my sight, hide at the sound of my voice, hate the moment my name was mentioned, i never had a friend or anyone to love me.
“not now, later” my sister would say, “stop being dramatic” she’d drawl. she didn’t do anything to help me, she wasn’t accustom to ostracisation or rejection like i was, she believed it was a make believe tale used to scare children to behave. she shone like the brightest sun, sounded like a gentle breeze, the mention of her mame brought warmth and praise. her very existence was my antithesis.
everyone danced and cheered in the day but would cower and cry at night, only soothing themselves by shunning out the beauty i brought and closing their eyes from nightmares they blamed on me. they slept well, dreams full of happiness as i struggled to keep away the monsters that hid in the dark, no one bothered to care or appreciate me, instead they blamed the monsters on me! they thanked my sister for their dreams when she herself was being protected by me.
but aaravos was different. he was a startouch elf who saw things in a different light, my light. the startouch elves heralded my sister and followed her loyally, thanking her for the stars that shone in the sky, my sky. i was the one that guarded the night they so gratefully cherished and only aaravos saw that.
as i walked the hollow streets at night, i enjoyed the scenery i never could during the day as the people stared and backed at my presence.
“you’ve done wonderfully, the stars are beautiful.”
unfazed i continued to stroll -waiting for the punch line or shriek that usually followed, but there was none.
“uhm, hello?”
i stopped and turned to find the face of the voice, he bowed his head gently with a small smile gracing his lips, “aaravos.”
“aaravos, what can i do for you?”
“nothing. i just wanted to talk to you.” he smiled gently, there was no hidden malice i could find. “the sky looks breathtaking,” he looked up with shining eyes, “almost as breathtaking as you.”
after that our late night walks became a regular and eventually he let me meet leola who was as bright as the closest star. they lived further than most, towering trees and green pastures surrounded their cottage shielding them from the rumours that followed me.
the two of them brought me satisfaction and contentment. i never cared for what the mass thought of me, fame glory and praise never bothered me then, all i wanted was people to love me. but when i introduced them to my sister everything changed.
naturally they loved her instantly, maybe more than me. but i brushed it aside for my undying love for my sister, i admired her. but when leola screamed for her, and aarvos found solace in her presence i could no longer stand the isolation thrusted upon me.
i did what i had to do, the oraculum was all i needed. finally i could force the people to love me, force them into submission. i could have the same affection everyone directed to my sister. but of course just like always, everything had to be ruined. one versus a thousand, and i was winning. unprecedented power coursed my veins, and a lust for power overcame my senses, just as i was about to set the sun for good, i taunted my sister from afar which allowed her advisor to rip the oraculum from my hands and tear the circlet from my head. my powers were stripped and my status was lost. i was no longer allowed in the kingdom. finally everyone cheered for me, for my removal.
centuries after my exile i roamed into xadia, slipping in through a loop hole. i heard leola’s wails for me and aarvos’ profuse apologies to the night they still continued to recite. i felt my heart stinge when leola blamed herself, i wanted to reassure her plaguing guilt -but i couldn’t. i watched their banishment as they were blamed for the arisal of human mages, but i couldn’t help them. i was the reason for their misfortune, and my presence would only make things worse. that is when i accepted my loneliness and instead of viewing as my weakness, i viewed it as my greatest gift.
but as the sky tore apart, as the balance was challenged i knew i had to do something. it was ancient magic hidden in the oraculum, the spells i brought to the world. if i was to fight alongside an army they too would perish under my touch so i had to do it alone. but somehow a prophecy brought me back to my sister and aaravos where only one star could continue to shine. i knew this meant that this was where i would face exile from the living, and join the everlasting solitude of the dead.
—
i forced my consciousness to remain with me, begging my body to obey. i brushed aside aaravos’ hand and stood with a loss of awareness.
“i’m sorry.”
there my sister looked at me, her tears like reflecting crystals in a lily pond. i smiled and grabbed the rest of my dignity, “i’ve been beaten once, it won’t happen twice.”
“what are you going to do?” aaravos brought his hand to me again, concern dancing on his face.
“fight?”
“alone?” callum quipped in.
“i’ve always been fighting alone.”

ocean
barty crouch jr x reader
synopsis : barty was the only person who could save you from isolation, without him, you find it hard to stay afloat. (angst)
—
i’m not sure when he started to drift from my grasp. i couldn’t detect the beginning of our division that put us on opposite ends of the ocean, but i do know where we stand now.
my family prided themselves in status but could never show or feel affection; it was a notion foreign to them, and i was a product of their detachment. for years my overthinking and anxiety overwhelmed me, for years i could never form true friendships in fear of rejection. but bartemius, i had my first and only friend.
barty shared this loneliness and desire for approval; after years of friendship he came clean to me, dumping all of his baggage for me to mend. his father had always been so distant and cold, his quirk of vigorously licking his lips when in stress caused many of his peers to keep their distance. but i accepted him and his pain whole, his flaws was what made him so perfect.
during our fourth year in potions i struggled to brew a concoction for professor slughorn, although no one could do it either, my mind convinced me they were laughing and mocking me. air failed to reach my lungs and escape my body, sweat started to stream like tears from my forehead. i ran out the door, away from all the illustrations of mockery my mind painted. barty followed closely.
“i’m sorry.”
“you have nothing to apologise for, you will always have me.”
for the longest time i always thought of myself as an overflowing ocean -an excessive amount of emotion and sensitivity trapped in the vessel i call myself. barty showed me there were rivers and streams that could take some of this pain from me, he was one of them.
he wrapped me in his arms and placed a soft kiss on the crown of my head, i will always be here, whenever you feel like you’re sinking just swim to me.
—
maybe i took him for granted, or failed to be what he needed me to be. but i tried. i know his father was always so hard on him but no matter how much i tried to mimick barty’s consolation, it was never enough to free him like how he freed me.
“you don’t understand. this isolation and distance, you never can. my heart bleeds, my happiness fails to win against the torment my father puts me through, you don’t know what it’s like to feel completely alone.”
—
since then he never spoke of his father again, and in the times i needed him most, he was no longer available.
“i have to study, sorry.”
he’d make up excuses everytime i tried to talk to him. he was the only person i had, the void his absence left me started filling up with an old friend i believed i had long cut off: loneliness.
“barty please! i can’t take this, i need you.” my eyes started to burn as saltwater flooded down to my lips, the salty sensation leaving a bitter ache.
“sorry, bellatrix and evan have asked me to join them for an event. you wouldn’t understand.” with that he left, and never came back.
very soon a great ocean had formed between us, my attempts to swim to him proved to be futile as he was always drifting away faster.
—
“barty, please-“ i ran into him on my way to find fresh air; nature was the only thing i had left, the only thing that could temporarily relieve my anxiety.
“no. we can’t be together anymore.”
“but why-“
“because you don’t understand me.”
“barty i know how you feel! you think i don’t but i do understand the detachment-“
“no! i mean you don’t understand me. for the longest time i’ve enjoyed your company, i enjoyed being your rock in the middle of a fleeting tsunami, but you could never see further than the temporary haven i was to you. bellatrix and evan, they’re apart of something great, something that will change the whole wizarding world. i don’t want to just be your saviour, i want to be something peope praise, something completely different to what my father has attempted to mould me into. you have always failed to see that beyond the ocean there is land, you search for rocks and islands, i search for continents. we were never meant to be; you swim towards calm waters and i long for waves.”
he left and the familiar sting of panic rushed up my system, he faded from view as torment started to overwhelm every inch of my body. i desperately tried to gasp for air, to swim towards something to save me. but barty was no longer there; i was drowning. i tried reaching up to stay afloat but i couldn’t, suddenly the light barty brought into my life turned dull and lifeless.

everyone shared a look of furrowed eyebrows and questioning glances. “you’re not the moon guardian ..?”
the lady stepped forwards to reveal shining bright hair of red that minicked flames with a glint of maliciousness in her eyes.
the queen’s advisor.
“all this time you thought she was me?” the advisor raised her hand and pointed at the mysterious lady, “remove your hood.”
as the woman clung tighter to her cloack she scanned the room under the shadow of the darkness, she saw aaravos. his eyes shone with something she’d grown foreign to, something she believed was gone forever.
from her cloack she removed a staff with runes carved all over.
“no-“ the queen tried to grab her but it was too late.
a flash of blue spread across the sky and a pull attempted to bring the frayed sides back together, the queen’s old advisor reacted swiftly -artfully leaping across the room. but instead of aiming for the advisor, the woman pointed the staff at the sky. the advisor and queen’s eyes widened.
in a brisk manner, her staff was pulled from her grip and split into half, the advisor turned to her, raised her hand and chanted an indecipherable rune. the woman’s cloack disintegrated into ashes revealing her true persona.
“my love-“ aaravos started to walk towards her but was forcibly pushed back by an invisible field.
“come to avenge your defeat, have you?”
the moon guardian lunged towards the advisor briskly, artfully doging the multitude of spells headed her way -heading straight for the circlet. but to no avail. as she neared closer, the advisor strengthened, absorbing the power from each attack the moon guardian would curse.
“we need to help her!” rayla was searching for an opportunity, knives in hand.
“magic.” the queen and aarvos shared a glance, “can you do it? young one?”
all eyes shifted to callum while he staggered at the attention. “i can try.”
but in the midst of the conversation the moon guardian was rendered powerless, knocked unconscious, bruised, and battered. she fell with noticeable scars.
“you weren’t able to avenge defeat.”

please tell me you understand
barty crouch jr x reader (angst)
(fem! implied but not explicitly stated)
synopsis : after you and barty break up, he’s compelled to join voldemort to fill the void you left. (continuation of “a heart”)
—
i walked down the corridors when i was suddenly snatched by my arm. with my eyes shut i was ready to shout until a hand hushed me. i opened my eyes slowly to see barty standing infront of me with lilies in his hand.
“hey princess-“
“nope. nah uh.” i ducked under his arm -struggling to escape as he pulled me back in.
“just please, let me explain.” his eyes glistened with hope that i wanted to crush so badly.
“i’m late on a date with my boyfriend.”
“wait.” his eyes widened as the bouquet dropped from his hand. “who?”
“none of your business. we should go on a double date! invite your girlfriend.”
“she’s not my girlfriend-“
i swerved around his body and briskly paced to the end of the corridor where i turned left and ran up the stairs to my dorm room.
—
“you said what?” pandora looked at me with worry laced on her face. “but you don’t have a boyfriend!”
“i know.” i plopped onto my bed and turned to face the window, “what do i do,,”
—
the next day i could feel barty’s intense gaze on my back, his lingering presence as he attempted to follow me in secret. he was probably trying to find out who my so-called “boyfriend” was.
when it was time for supper i sat in the middle of pandora and the ravenclaw boy i had recently befriended.
“are you okay?” i turned over to see his furrowed brows and pursed lips.
“yeah, just stressed.” a sigh slipped out of my lips as my head found itself burried in my palms.
“she lied that she has a boyfriend and now her ex is trying to find the imaginary man-“
“pandora!”
“well, why don’t you let me be your pretend boyfriend?” i looked up and hesitantly agreed.
—
the following day in defence against the dark arts, i sat next to him -meticulously placing my hand on his arm which earned an unpleasant reaction on barty’s face.
it stung to see him like that but at least now he’ll leave me alone.
i paraded around with my imaginary boyfriend for almost three weeks until barty’s relentless attempts to communicate and stalk came to an end.
—
i started to move on from barty, rarely ever hearing his name pop up, that was until i saw him start hanging out with lucius, bellatrix, regulus, and pandora’s brother, evan. he was probably trying to continue his family’s sacred pureblood lineage. it struck me as odd how he’d started hanging out with them because of their extremist beliefs which sharply contradicted his father’s preaches of inclusivity. the thought quickly left my mind as i saw swarms of pureblooded slytherin girls cling onto him like leeches.
—
lately there have been rumours of a strong, supremacist leader who’s been recruiting wizards to eradicate muggle-borns. although pandora and i are safe from this category, she’s told me how her family has joined this leader and that many slytherins have as well.
all i could think about was barty.
—
i headed to the astronomy tower to clear my thoughts, the star constellations were shining brightly today -as if they were attempting to tell me something. as i stepped closer to the top i began to hear muffled sobs and sniffles but couldn’t see anyone. i walked towards the edge until i saw barty from the corner of my eye.
“oh! uhm i’m sorry,”i stuttered under heavy breaths, “i didn’t realise. i’ll give you some space.”
“no.” he held out his hand, his eyes shouting a silent plead, “please stay.”
i wanted to dash away again but his broken and vulnerable figure crumbled my contempt for him -urging me to keep him company, so i nodded and sat next to him.
“i’m sorry my love. it was a misunderstanding, i swear-“
“hush,” i placed a hand on his arm, “not now. tell me what’s wrong.”
he pulled me in for a hug, sobbing into my chest. “you were the only one who ever saw me. my own father shunned me and my mom abided by his rules, my friends enjoyed the version of me that was cunning and reckless but you! you saw beyond my harsh exterior and opened my heart like a wound, except it didn’t hurt. you kept deepening the scar and i wanted more. but when you left me there was nothing to fuel my obsession, my addiction. i had to, you understand right?” he looked up at me with a manianic glint in his face.
“,,,what do you mean?”
he showed me his arm, a dark skull and snake symbol carved in his skin.
“i joined them.”
“barty,,”
“i had to! you left me and found someone else, you carved me open only to let me bleed, this was the only thing i could do to keep myself from spilling out of my frayed exterior.” he grasped me tighter and i saw his humanity slipping away, “please tell me you understand.”
i gazed up at the stars as words failed to trickle from my mouth; they were starting to disappear into a cloud. barty’s spark was fading into the darkness; i wasn’t sure if i could understand him anymore.

aliens
viktor x fem astronomer!reader
synopsis : reader being alienated by viktor as he and jayce pursue hextech. (angst)
—
the night was cold and harsh, a stark contrast to the bright, glistening sky i’d study at night.
i’d watch and record the movements of the celestial bodies and search for new life beyond our comprehension. viktor used to say it was silly of me to believe in aliens but i knew he believed it too.
we met at the cafe near the academy, he ordered a strong black coffee and i, a chocolate tart. as i seated next to him, i saw he was reading about the air ship and the possibility of implementing its mechanics in a rocket.
he saw me peeking over his shoulder, “do you want to read it too?”
“i’m sorry, my curiosity got the better of me. i don’t want to interrupt your reading.”
“no, of course not.” his face held a small, dorky grin which juxtaposed his earlier serene, stern expression. that’s when my crush developed. “i’ll leave it in the middle, we can read through it together.”
since then, cafe meetings became a regular and we branched off to intimate topics; i learnt that i was his first friend and he learnt that he was the first person to make me feel seen. usually i felt like an alien amongst a crowd and he knew the same loneliness.
seven months after our first encounter he officially asked me out to watch the new rocket launch, he brought a picnic rug and flowers with cucumber sandwiches, i brought a chocolate tart and tiramisu. i saw the tips of his ears turn pink as he bent down to kiss my cheek -promising we’d explore the universe together with the rocket he’d build for me.
a few months later he told me about jayce’s new theory of arcane talent. they formed an alliance to harness the magic and use it to make the world a better place. in this newfound passion, our dream faded in the darkness and solitude of the night.
…
“viktor! you said you’d come home earlier tonight!”
“look i’m sorry, but jayce and i’s pursuit of this,,, knowledge, it can change the world!”
“what about me? us?! we could change the world too!”
“no we can’t, you can’t. you want to search for something that’s not real. we can make this magic real.”
..
how did i not see it? the way viktor would scoff as jayce mentioned mel, the way jayce side eyed viktor from across the room.
..
“why are you spending all your time with him? how about me?”
“why can’t you understand, jayce, he’s my friend. he sees me.”
..
when the bomb hit piltover, viktor was left unconscious, but hextech brought him back and i was grateful for all the times viktor would alienate me for his research. but when he said goodbye to jayce and not me? when he left? i had to force myself to leave him in the past.
so why? mysteriously jayce has disappeared and viktor has vanished off the earth.
—
as i strolled the green grass covered by the shadow of a cloud, as the stars stayed hidden under a cloack of mystery, i heard viktor’s voice -calling. calling to someone else.
“in all timelines, in all possibilities, only you.”
i looked up to see two stars shining, two that i had never seen. somehow, i was compelled to believe that it was viktor and jayce.
aliens. maybe they do exist, you and jayce must be trapped in a far away universe but at least you have each other now.
i still continue to search for new life, but my research isn’t on space, it’s how to navigate this new life without you, viktor.

a heart
barty crouch jr x fem!reader (angst)
synposis : reader and barty being exes.
(warnings : implied cheating(?), misunderstandings(?), can be left to interpretation)
continuation if interested !! : “please tell me you understand”
—
“are you okay?” pandora looked at me with worry laced on her face.
“yeah just thinking about the potions test, professor slughorn’s gonna hex me.” i laughed dryly at my misfortune, pandora seemed to notice the absence of emotion in my laugh.
“yeah sure.” she went back to her yorkshire pudding as my eyes wandered to the slytherin table.
his arms were wrapped around her shoulder, her body pressed on his torso. i flickered back to my food but i immediately sensed the intensity of his gaze, my eyes turned to pandora afraid to see a smug smirk on his face.
“let’s go.” she whispered.
i laid in bed at night, memories flushing, playing like a trailer for a movie. bartemius was the love interest but clearly i wasn’t for him.
—
i remembered him waiting for me after muggle studies his book bag slumped lazily on his shoulders, “princess! took you long enough.” he’d plant a loving kiss on my cheek as we walked to transfiguration together. i’d look at his eyes but they never seemed fully mine, at the time i thought they were.
as we exited transfiguration about to head to lunch a slytherin girl came up to us, “hey barty, i need some help” she said in a shrill, flirtatious voice.
“i’m busy with my girl.”
“go help her barty, it’s okay.” i exclaimed with trust, i wanted so much to be liked by his peers that i didn’t hear the malicious intent behind her voice.
i guess that’s when it started.
the next few days she’d come up to us calling for him, i always encouraged him to go until he started going on his own.
one time i walked into the library with pandora, both of us heading our own way promising to sit at the table in the corner once we found our books.
“you should dump her.”
oh my merlin, gossip? let me in.
as i peaked through a hole i made by taking out books on the shelves i saw the slytherin girl pinned to the wall by ,,, wait. barty?!
“i mean she’s really pretty come on, but she’s predictable, boring. im snoring just thinking about her.”
suddenly the books i grabbed dropped out of my hands as thick rivers treaded down my cheeks.
barty moved from the girl and looked up at me, sheer horror glistening in his eyes.
“sweetheart-“
i ran. i ran out the library door with pandora looking at me dumbfounded as barty chased me down the halls.
i rushed back to the ravenclaw tower, the eagle knocker asking me a riddle.
“i can break, i can be clogged, i can be attacked, i can be given, i can be kept, i can be crushed, yet i can be whole at the same time. what am i?”
“oh! i don’t know!” i hated the impossible riddles this stupid common room would make me answer.
a voice that made my gut wrench saved me the trouble of unlocking the code, “that’s simple. a heart.”
“a heart?” i muttered back.
i turned to see barty with a tear down his face, hands motioning to grab me.
the common room door opened suddenly and i turned from him, “that’s a bit rich coming from you.”
the following two weeks was met with constant letters expressing sorrow all starting with “i love you, please let me explain.” i never actually read past this line -throwing out each letter before i believed his lies. eventually he gave up and two weeks later i saw him parading around with the slytherin girl around his arm.
i felt humiliated, betrayed, used. i would never forgive him.
—
the next day at breakfast the same thing happened again.
“are you okay?” pandora would ask.
“yeah i’m fine.” i’d reply back, pandora not really believing me would let me be since i had grown tired of her prophecies and advice i could decipher as much as the ravenclaw riddles.
i’d look up at the slytherin table and then back at my food as i could feel barty’s heating glare on my head. this time i decided to show him that i no longer cared about him. i turned to the boy next to me, he was good looking, smart, and charming.
“hello.”
he raised his eyebrow, his lips quirking up, “finally noticing me, are you?”
“what do you mean?”
“oh nothing.” he went back to his toast his eyes never leaving me.
my eyebrows furrowed in confusion as he started to laugh, his booming voice echoing through the walls. i subconsciously started to join him until my eyes accidentally flitted back to slytherin and i finally saw barty’s face, it wasn’t smug or proud, it was broken.

chapter six : unexpected
aaravos x fem!moon guardian reader (?)
+ callum x rayla
summary : aaravos has a sudden memory of his beloved and allies make it to the moon nexus.
(not canon !!)
(click here for masterlist and synposis)
<< prev // next >>
—
as the band of allies headed to the moon nexus they had added new members: ezran, zym, and lujanne. leola was placed under the care of amaya and janai who had to protect lux aurea’s sun from the tampered sky.
as they trekked along bushy plains and tall forests, they encountered another creature of the night, but it was larger, fiercer.
its claws were as sharp as swords, tough as ivory and as long as branches. its back had spikes that mimicked caltrops and pointed in every direction. its eyes as dark as a starless sky and red as a bloody heart. its height as tall as a mountain, as deep as the seas. its speed as fast as light.
“can you stop it?” rayla whimpered.
“my magic won’t flow anymore, it’s too weak.” the mysterious lady lowered her head in defeat. “the creature is too strong, too fast.”
“why not let the human mage have a go.” aaravos sneered.
“i’ve never tried!” the anxious callum expressed as aaravos let out a smug scoff.
“be nice to him.” the mysterious women lightly slapped his shoulder but aaravos was transported back to a distant memory; him and his beloved watching the night sky as she finished her moon guardian duties.
she was tracing constellations she saw in the sky on his arm, the faint trace of her finger sending welcomed shivers down his spine. oh how he missed her.
then a night creature appeared in his memory, a small one but still a night creature. his beloved took a stand and traced runes ingrained in his mind as she quietly whsipered like the wind, “lumen saltans”. moonlight dispersed from her spell and entered the creatures heart turning their darkened eyes into a radiant velvet blue as they wandered back to the sky.
suddenly he was back in the present moment watching as half of his allies were hurt and the other half tactically dodging the night creaturess attacks. he made his way to callum who was hopelessy trying to distract the ferocious beast from rayla.
“try this.” aaravos mimicked the spell in his memory but his inability to produce moon magic made no effect on the creature.
callum stepped forward and placed his hands in front -motioning them slowly and carefully in the way aaravos taught him. “lumen saltans.” light dispered from his hands which narrowly missed the queen’s head, “my bad!” he directed it to the creature leaving burn marks on the trees that surrounded him and pierced the beast in the back. but instead of blood spilling out the dark colour faded into one that impersonated the stars and it turned to callum, its eyes faded from black to blue and red to purple. it started to move towards him but began to ascend until it was no longer in sight.
“woah.” everyone looked at callum, relief plastered on their face.
“but look,” announced the queen, “it was guarding something!” an entrance carved into stone with the moon nexus on the other side. “we must enter.”
as they entered the cave there were drawings tracking moon phases and star paths, a secret language plastered on the wall.
“the vengeful spirit of the moon guardian!” one of the queen’s advisors froze in shock, “it’s her mark!”
a moon was carved on the walls with two rings perpendicular to each other, both sitting diagonally.
“so it is.” aaravos had disappointment apparent in his voice, part of him wished to see his beloved again but most him wished she wasn’t the cause.
“someone’s coming!” corvus led them to the corner behind a boulder as soren directed the other half behind a large wall with a mirror like glass on the other side.
“it’s so exhuasting, all this plotting and planning. can we just skip to the part where i win,,, again.” the voice came from a woman who laughed arrogantly, in her hand was a circlet, the royal circlet of the moon guardian.
“but impossible!” whispered one of the queen’s high mages, “that circlet was kept locked away!” he moved up in shock causing some rocks behind him to fall.
“who’s there?” yelled the woman. she looked around but her face was covered by a dark shadow. “have you finally come, your majesty?” her tone was sardonical and mocking.
the queen and her advisors looked horrified, how did the woman know?
“have you come to lose again?” the woman laughed as she stepped into the light her appearance shocking the queen, her heralds, and aaravos.
she snickered and sneered. “show yourself, moon guardian.”

—
“the sky is torn because of dark magic?” aaravos looked at leola with worry as he wrapped his arms around her, “what are you going to do to her?”
the queen sighed and smiled, “nothing. i need you to help me fix it.”
“i dont suppose you know who’s responsible for this?”
the queen looked outside the large window and her smile faltered, “just a hunch.”
“your sister.”
“your beloved.”
the queen and aaravos looked at each other with an ache in their hearts. leola perked up at the mention of her father’s old lover and a tear trickled down her cheek.
the queen placed a hand on her head, “a reunion was long over due anyway.”
—
“helloo!!”
“soren be more respectful.” corvus scolded.
“no one was answering when we knocked!!”
the door opened slightly and a gold light illuminated faintly in the crevice of aaravos’ house.
“hello? how can i help you?”
callum looked up at the blue elf and saw the constellations mimicked on his skin. callum being obviously awestruck was left speechless so rayla stepped forward, “we need help to fix the sky.”
“what a coincidence,” all eyes shifted towards a woman wrapped around in white and gold, her hair shone like the sun and her skin glowed like the rays. “i’m here for the same reason.”
aaravos lightly guided the queen and leola behind him with conscpicuous suspicion present in his tone. “who are you?”
“i am the high mage callum, from katolis, this is rayla -a moonshadow elf, and soren and corvus. we just defeated a great evil and seek to bring peace to xadia but this, this sky! it risks tearing everything we built.”
“uhuh,,, callum.” aaravos started. “high mage? black magic i assume, are you sure your people aren’t the cause?”
“aaravos!” the queen lightly hit his shoulder to signalise a break of social conduct.
“he can use primal magic,” rayla spoke up, “show him a spell callum!”
“angustiae lautus.” suddenly the books on the floor leola was playing with before the queen arrived found themselves situated back on the bookshelf, a small whirlwind dusted aaravos’ furniture leaving it spotless.
“oh.” aaravos sighed and allowed them inside, “i suppose you could be of help.”
one by one callum, rayla, soren, and corvus filed in.
“what’s with the hood?” the mysterious woman was stopped before she could enter.
“she saved us from the creatures of the night.” rayla stepped towards her to grab her hand but aaravos stopped her.
“remove the hood.”
“i’m afraid i can’t,” the mysterious woman stepped back and lowered her head, “those who see me are terrified.”
aaravos stepped forwards and raised his hands to remove her hood, “i won’t be scared.”
“i’d rather not.” she stepped backwards as if they were playing cat and mouse. “i can leave if you want me to.”
as she was about to turn around the queen spoke up, “no. stay.”
—
“you’re telling me xadia used to be united with the five other continents and you were one of our queens?!” callum stood up with excitement in his eyes.
“still is.” one of the queen’s advisors quickly retorted but was hushed by her majesty.
“well what about the other ruler?” soren inquired earning the attention of everyone, including leola who was once again preoccupied with the books from the bookshelf.
“she strayed course.” the queen looked at the sky, her eyes mirroring a glistening river.
“but she waa strong, powerful, the bravest person i knew.” aaravos stood up and walked towards leola who teared at the mention of the moon guardian. “one of the kindest souls i knew before she was corrupted.”
“do you know why?” the mysterious person inquired.
“maybe it was the way she was called evil and painted to be the villain. villains aren’t born, they’re made.” the queen lowered her head, guilt gracing her face.
“no, it was my fault.” leola barely managed to speak as hiccups and sobs flooded her speech. “i told her i didn’t want her.”
“i’m sure that wouldn’t be enough to break someone so strong-“ the mysterious woman tried to console leola but she was quickly interrupted.
“no! it is, i didn’t mean to though, i swear!”
“sweetheart, remember it’s not your fault.” aaravos tightened his embrace. “whatever the reason may be -it’s been centuries, it remains a mystery until she can speak the truth. but it was long ago, it’s no longer important-“
“but it is!” the queen’s heralds chanted in unison, “she’s responsible for this!”
“it’s under speculation,” the queen interrupted, “but very likely.”
“uhuh.” the mysterious woman rested her back and offered a frail hand to leola which she hesitantly accepted. the woman clasped her hand lightly, “i’m sure it wasn’t you’re fault, no matter where she is now, i bet you will always hold a special place in heart.”
the tears from leola’s face suddenly turned into a tsunami as she leapt from her father’s arms and into the woman’s, “i hope you’re right.”
—
“when the sky unzipped i located the genesis of the rip to be above the moon nexus, there is where the person respnsible for this should be.” aaravos folded out a map filled with annotations and calculations which everyone formed a circle around.
“we must prepare for a war your majesty!” one of the queen’s high mages quipped. “if it’s anything like the ancient war then we must gather our troops!”
“but war is so violent, so selfish. people die for what reason? power? greed? if you can avoid a war you must, the casualties caused by battles are high and the guilt consumes you whole.” the mysterious woman moved away from the map and stepped towards the window. “i fought in a war once. in doing so, many people’s homes were destroyed, lives ruined, people injured. i understand if you choose this but i beg you to at least think it through.”
“she’s right,” the queen walked beside her and placed a gentle hand on her shoulder, “i lost my sister to a war and i would give anything to have the chance to rewind time and comfort her.”
a unanimous silence erupted, everyone in the room having understood the cost of war first hand. they felt their loved ones in the room with them almost hearing them say “think this through.”
“we have some friends that can help us investigate the moon nexus,” callum broke the silence and all eyes shifted to him, “you know in case we need reinforcement.”

chapter four - journey
aaravos x moon guardian reader

—
the queen and her selected heralds headed to xadia as quickly as they could, although it proved to be a challenge since xadia no longer existed on any official maps.
“this is you-know-who’s doing!” the queen’s mages agreed in unison, “there’s no one else capable of this magic, it’s esoteric! arcane!”
“your highness if only your high advisor were still here, she’d know what to do!” exclaimed one of her council members.
the queen pondered a moment, “perhaps.”
—
“what could this mean rayla?” callum looked at his lover’s eyes with worry and despair, “we finally defeated him but-“
“woah slow down callum, there’s got to be some sort of explanation for this!” rayla turned to lujanne and pleaded with her, “there’s got to be some reason here!”
lujanne looked at her face and clasped rayla’s hands in hers, “maybe there is but i couldn’t give you an answer. although,,, maybe the startouch elves,,,”
“startouch elves?!” callum and rayla looked at each other with overwhelming desperation, “but they’re nearly impossible to find!”
lujanne thought for a moment, “i’ve heard,,, rumours. a startouch elf and his daughter live on the outskirts of xadia near the edges of the west. well of course it’s just speculation,,,”
“we’ll find them.” rayla looked at callum with worry and callum’s lips softly curved upwards, “we have to ensure that the peace stays.”
—
“your majesty, i think we’re here.”
the queen and her heralds stood in front of dead trees that curved into an arch, as they stepped through, the barren land began to produce flora and butterflies flew around them revealing a land of rich colour under the pink and purple sky.
“wow.” the queen’s heralds stared at the sight -their mouth agape, the stories told of xadia were horror stories -revealing nightmares that crept out of fairytales. but xadia seemed nothing like that at all, the trees were so green with flowers and fruits ranging from all colours of the rainbow.
“come on my dear soldiers, we must find aaravos.”
—
“how much more must we go!” soren was irritated, hungry, and tired.
“lujanne said to keep walking until we find a lopsided willow tree shaped like an arch!” rayla mentally sighed seeing how tired soren was getting, this was going to be a long trip.
“SOREN!”
rayla and soren ran to find corvus and callum being attacked by a dark, big, shadowed creature.
“my magic won’t work on it!” cried callum. “aqua dulcis!” his attempt to dispell the creature failed as it just went right through it, “nothing physical will work on it! but somehow it can attack us, i dont know how!”
rayla threw a knife at the creature and soren lunged with his sword, but no avail. the creature morphed into several different shadows and started attacking them too. they were circled like prey caught by a hunter.
“partum mysterium.”the shadow creatures disappeared.
“WHOS THERE!?” soren scanned for any enemies but found no one.
suddenly, someone dressed in a royal blue cloak appeared -their hands up as if they were surrendering.
“i come in peace. i saw you in danger and thought you might need some assistance.”
“how did you do that?” callum inquired, “my magic went straight through.”
“they are creatures of the night,” the mysterious person stepped closer slowly but it was evident she was in pain, “the only way to defeat them is through moon magic. they haven’t showed up in centuries but i’m assuming it has something to do with the deformed sky.”
callum’s eyes flickered up at that thought, “are you a startouch elf?”
“oh goodness no, if you’re talking about aaravos i’m sure his housing should be just down this-“
“oh she fainted.”
“we know soren.”
—
“thank you,” the mysterious person drank the water and ate the grubs rayla and callum had prepared for her. “i’m not that strong so any sort of magic tends to ruin my body.”
“why are you out here?” soren asked with suspicion laced in his voice, “are you responsible for this?”
“im afraid you’re mistaken, i’ve come to see if i could fix the sky but this magic is beyond me.”
“it’s beyond everyone,” callum rested his head in his hands, “this is insanity.”
“there was a prophecy.” the mysterious lady had never removed her hood and she played with it to ensure it wouldn’t fall off. “the only way to end this curse is if the two brightest beings come together.”
“the brightest beings,,” callum muttered to himself, “that must mean aaravos! we have to find him. can you show us the way?”
—
“daddy there’s someone at the door!”
“don’t open it leola, wait for me.” aaravos rushed out of his study to meet his daughter and the stranger behind their door.
“hello there how can i help y- your majesty!” aaravos bowed his head slightly while his eyes opened wide. “what are you doing all the way out here!”
“i need your help.”

chapter three : the prophecy
aaravos x moon guardian reader (?)
+ rayla x callum
summary: a new threat arises compromising the safety of xadia.
(important !! : this is not canonically correct and for the sake of the story i’m gonna say that it takes startouch elves 600 years to enter teenage years even tho it’s probably wrong. also look at the previous chapters otherwise this will not make sense 🥲🥲)

—
“leola! don’t run too far!” aavaros spectated as his daughter ran off to meet her human friends, he relaxed with a solemn grin plastered on his face knowing she’d be safe with them.
he looked up and saw the same cloudy sky that had been there for months; a dark grey, murky cloud shaped like a giant ring rested in the middle of the sky. It was highly unusual for clouds to cover the sun for months on end, but then again, nothing had happened these past months so aaravos assumed it would clear up… eventually.
—
it had been 300 years since xadia was removed from the rule of the celestial guardians’, after leola introduced humans to primal magic -which the humans abused and cultivated into a stronger form (dark magic), the queen decided that for punishment of their sins they were to live in exile from the other continents.
the queen was doing her daily tasks which now was reduced to one: removing the dark clouds in the sky. but nothing would work, she’d ask her council of advisors, high mages, and scholars for aid but there was no answer to the mysterious cloud -but it did omit a dangerous feeling. one of the queen’s high mages had a prophetic vision the day the cloud appeared, but it was impossible to understand. “in the first hour of the last quarter the world will unzip and order will be scattered, the brightest beings must come together but only one star can continue to shine.”
under closer inspection, the mysterious cloud had runes that were industrious -newly created. no primal mage could decipher the secret text and the council understood what this meant: the source for the ominous cloud came from within xadia.
—
“we must bring forth a new age, a new day where elves and humans fight together instead of against.” king ezran had proposed a new plan for unity instead of division and distrust, queen janai and queen aanya endorsed his beliefs which quickly caused everyone else to follow suit, -except for the startouch elves.
the startouch elves felt ostracised and bitter towards the mortals because they were once revered as the heralds of the celestial beings but were now cast out because of leola’s decision to teach humans magic. they could never forgive her for this teachery and they sentenced leola and aaravos to a life beneath the heavens where they could live with their sin. the fact that no one else in xadia could remember this chapter in history made the startouch elves even more resentful and unwilling to help the mortals.
“king ezran! how can we live in unity if we are divided by land and sea?” cried a little elf. “king ezran how can we eliminate dark magic for good?” “king ezran!”
callum sighed at the questions hauled at his little brother and realised that he’d have to answer more questions on being a human mage that can use primal magic.
“it will be alright callum,” rayla pulled him in for a hug and whispered “we can live in harmony now, viren is defeated.”
“i guess you’re right.” callum wrapped his arms around her and rested his head on her shoulder, “i just have this feeling that our fight is not over, you know?”
they both looked up at the cloud in the sky, “it’s nothing callum, just smoke from the dragons when they helped us defeat him.”
“mmm you’re right.”
—
aaravos was getting ready for bed as he finished his work for the day, he spotted a little crack with light shining through his daughter’s door and went inside to find her staring at the sky.
“leola sweetheart, it’s 12:58 shouldn’t you be in bed?”
“daddy, when will the stars and moon come out again?” leola looked at her father worriedly, “the cloud looks like it’s getting bigger.”
“hmm, i’m not sure unicorn, i don’t think it’ll be leaving anytime soon at this rate.”
“daddy, what does the moon look like tonight?”
aaravos pulled out a thick, blue book encrusted in gold and shimmer, he flipped the page to a diagram of moon phases and took a seat on the edge of leola’s bed motioning her to come, he pointed at the seventh picture. “it should be the last quarter today.”
suddenly, the cloud dissapated and the stars were revealed, this sight lasted for a moment until the a crack began to open causing the stars to melt and manifest into an immense light.
—
the queen awoke to a bright light outside her window and realised the sky had changed, it was now a bright pink and purple with the stars quickly disappearing. she looked at the clock on her wall reading 1:00 and her eyes flitted to something of her sister’s, a moon chart.
“the first hour of the last quarter.”
—
rayla frantically shook callum awake and pointed to the sky “i think you’re feeling was right.”
—
on the outskirts of xadia someone was also watching the sky, this mysterious character was hidden behind a dark, royal blue cloak with a hood that covered her face.
she let out a breathless sigh, “only one star can continue to shine.”

chapter two : i miss you
summary : leola and aaravos mourn over fem!reader(?) who is no longer with them
(click here for masterlist and synopsis)
<< prev // next >>
—
“daddy, i miss her. i didn’t mean to make her sad i swear-“ leola was barely able to utter her sentences through her thick sobs and breathless hiccups. “i miss her, how do i being her back?” she fell to the ground -her tears forming a small river connecting to a nearby fishpond.
“i miss her too unicorn, but it’s not your fault.” aaravos thought about the events leading to his beloved’s “escapade”, what had possessed her to give into the darkness? she always had an ethereal aura radiating from her, one that emitted sensations of hope and serenity, so why? what had happened? aaravos listened to his daughter explain how it was all her fault but he knew his beloved and he knew she wouldn’t do something so rash because of a foolish comment.
“you know unicorn, i used to call her my eclipse because her presence overtook my heart. i thought i had only enough love for you in this world but she taught me that love grows, it stretches horizons and challenges reality.”
everything went silent for a moment; the trees stopped rustling and the wind silenced.
“she used to call me a princess,” leola looked at the constellastions above and stared at the moon, “she said i shone like the moon that gave her a feeling she couldn’t describe.” her sentences were coherent -sounding so sincere it broke aaravos’ already broken heart. “but the feeling made her happy.”
“people always said she was evil, that her being the moon guardian was already a sign she would do something irreversible.” aaravos pondered for a moment. “she proved them right didn’t she? her absence leaves a hole in our lives that can never be filled.”
“how can i bring her back daddy?”
“she’s not coming back unicorn, we can only continue to live.”
——
the queen’s pov:
it was a cloudy night at the palace, the stars were hidden as if to reflect how a precious light had disappeared. the queen closed her eyes and imagined what the sky should look like -but she couldn’t remember. she couldn’t even remember the last time she stepped into the night to appreciate the peaceful air and jewelled sky. she never knew which star her younger sister belonged to, was she antares, sirius, vega? she didn’t know.
she tried to remember her sister’s face but even that was a challenge.
“goodnight little sister, rest now in the light of the sky, i will meet you in a far away dream where we aren’t separated by impossible seas.”

chapter one : history lesson
aaravos x moon guardian
(listen to “the moon rises” to set the mood !!)
next >>
—
celestial guardians live up to thousands of years old; they are stars in the sky living through a mortal vessel. they are similar to the great ones but instead of being multiple stars, celestial guardians were only one star in the sky. stars live for billions of years but eventually they fade, some fall, some collapse; they are not immortal like startouch elves but they do have magic beyond imagination -power that can annihilate every atom in the universe if sustained forever by one person. hence a line of succession and responsibility.
the younger sister was always left out, despite her royal status the people saw her as a symbol of evil and the dark, as she grew older all nightmares and creatures of the dark were linked to her and believed to be her doing. but it is the moon guardian’s job to defeat creatures of the night and provide peaceful dreams, she was a mother to children -watching them, helping them, and even healing them from mental, emotional, and physical distress. despite this, the younger sister was used as a bedtime story to scare children into behaving.
although she was feared she found love. aaravos -a startouch elf was the only person she felt seen with, he had a daughter, leola, whom the younger sister always viewed with adoration and warmth. she didn’t care for the stories that painted her as a villian when she had all the love she could ever need.
until she came.
aaravos and leola lived in the countryside away from the lies and rumours, away from the queen. but when they met her they were instantly drawn to her -just like everyone else. maybe it was her otherwordly beauty or the way she felt like breath of fresh air in the sun. there was no denying everyone loved her.
at first the younger sister didn’t mind, despite always living in the queen’s shadow she had undying love for her sister, but then aaravos and leola’s fondness grew more than the younger sister would’ve liked.
“NO! i want her not you!” leola wailed.
it was an accident, a slip up kids often do because they can’t accurately articulate their sentences, but it broke her. the younger sister looked out the window to see aaravos talking and smiling whilst sitting on the ground as the sun guardian kneeled behind him with her hands on his shoulders as she massaged away his pain.
“what am i doing” the younger sister pondered in the solitude of her nightly routine. she had slain the creatures that frightened the young children and gave her subjects a peaceful rest -defeating the nightmares that crept in each one of their dreams. “why is it that now when the softer light is revealed they sleep? why is it that they praise the sun when the trapped lights of the stars are revealed in my night? why can’t they adore me?”
and so she decided that it was time to bring eternal night, so that everyone could learn to appreciate it -to appreciate her.
she was close, so close. the younger sister had stepped her toes into deep water -meddling with magic she shouldn’t have. the oraculum contained magic from the beginning of time, magic that couldn’t survive in a fragile and mortal world and so it was hidden from the people. the magic corrupted her and consumed her whole while she tried to tame and cultivate it. the effects of the magic were not subtle but the little attention she had aided its growth.
she had already shown superiority in power compared to the queen and even the high mages and advisors couldn’t defeat her. aaravos and leola where nowhere to be seen but even so the younger sister would have easily surpassed him. so how did she lose? how was she banished and outcasted from her position? the queen’s most trusted advisor had managed to surpass the moon guardian when she wasn’t paying attention. despite the guardian’s overwhelming power, battling the queen and an army of people who despise you is no easy feat. so now, during a moment of vulnerability, the younger sister was defeated.
now her story is lost to history and xadia has forgotten all about the celestial guardians. until the queen’s advisor returns and fate brings the sisters and aaravos together once more.
