Silesian museum, Katowice, Poland , Riegler-Riewe architects, 2013 The history of the town is related to mining so the architects decided to design a museum on the site of a former mine. The museum is actually bellow the surface and the only source of light comes trough these translucent cubes above ground. The cubes, due to the light colours, blend into the surrounding area covered with plants as pale and pastel as the translucent cubes. The colours of the site blend with the color of the cubes and the city of Katowice behind it.

Daiwa Ubiquitous Computing Research Building, Tokyo Japan by Kengo Kuma and Associates, 2014 " The building was constructed for the universitys new field of research on ubiquitous computing. Our aim was to break away from conventional image of campuses that consist of hard materials such as concrete, metal or stone, and to instead design a soft building made with wood and earth. Here, scalelike panels of natural materials (wood and earth) gently undulate to form a smooth and organic facade. At the center of the building comes an organ-like aperture covered with soft membrane. It joins the lane in the front and the Japanese garden (part of the university president guest house) at the back. The opening also generates a gentle and organic flow of light and wind in the campus, which is otherwise dominated by the strict grid arrangement." -quote from Kengo Kuma official site http://kkaa.co.jp/works/architecture/daiwa-ubiquitous-computing-research-building/ Photos by Edward Caruso Photography More photos: http://architizer.com/projects/daiwa-ubiquitous-computing-research-building/

Edificio Castelar - Rafael de la Hoz Arderius (built 1977-1983) Madrid Projected in 1975 by architect Rafael de La-Hoz Arderius and inaugurated in 1983. At the present time it's a Catalana Occidente's (insurance company) office building. Due to the glass panels the building seems to float above the ground floor made of white stone (Škriljevac stone I think, couldn't find the information). Rafael de la Hoz Arderius was born in Madrid in 1924. He graduated from the School of Architecture in Madrid in 1951 and finished his studies at M.I.T. in the United States. Lingotto Fiat factory (conversion) in Torino, Italy by Renzo Piano, 1983-2002 The factory was first built in 1920s , and it was the largest car manufactory builng in Europe. This 500 meter long, five-storey building even had a rooftop test track. Renzo Piano left the inside of the building almost compleately intact, while the facade was changed to fit the modern environment. The Bubble is the compleatly transparent meeting room on the top of the building, added in 2002. The complex is now a home to a shopping centre and an art gallery on the top floor of the building. You can access the roof top track trough the gallery (that's how I got there). Criss-cross envelope villa by Ofis arhitekti, Ljubljana, Slovenia , 2012-2015 This residential house is located in the city center of ljubljana, Slovenia. The building has a recognisable facade made of perforated metal panels , that not only serve an aesthetical purpose, but also make an abstract interpretation of the texture of classical villas in the historical suburb. The interior of the villa is constructed in a manner of dividing areas by levels, ground floor for living space, first floor for the children and the second floor for the parents. Baldegg Monastery (1968-72) in Hochdorf, Switzerland, by Marcel Breuer & Beat Jordi Built in 1972 this monastery is one of the most beautiful sacral buildings in Europe. It is still managed by the same order of sisters that comissioned this project from Breuer in the sixties, and they continue to preserve all the original details of the building including furtiture Bruer made especially for them. They left the majority of the building in original state Breuer envisioned it. In later years sisters from the convent worked with Breuers son concerning repairs and remodeling parts of the monastery, so that it would stay as close to the original design as possible. Opera Nouvel, Lyon, France; 1993; Jean Nouvel The Opéra Nouvel (Nouvel Opera House) in Lyon, France is the home of the Opéra National de Lyon. The original opera house was re-designed by the distinguished French architect, Jean Nouvel between 1985 and 1993 and is named after him. By retaining the older façades, Nouvel linked the building to the surrounding official buildings, such as the adjacent nineteenth century Hotel de Ville, the town hall and mayor's office for the city, and the nearby city museum, housed in the nineteenth-century Palais de Saint Pierre. To enlarge and renovate Lyon’s opera house, Nouvel kept its 19th-century façade and added an arched glass roof and six-level basement. The new grand hall comprises five stories that seat 1,100 people (up from 800), and is suspended 10 meters (33 feet) from the ground to isolate it from the rumbling of the metro and street traffic. A basement amphitheater seats another 200 people. The arched roof covers the ballet rehearsal studio, whose floor-to-ceiling windows overlook the heart of the city. Islamic Cemetery , Altach, Austria 2012 The aim of the design is a very open space laid out with the overall concept. A delicate weave of wall panels in various heights frame the graves and the built-structure. It's a beautiful design created with respect for it's function, incomporating different materials with intricating details. Bernardo Bader Architects is an Austrian architectural studio, winner of 2013 Aga Kahn Award for Architecture with the project of Islamic Cemetery in Altach. The Musée des Confluences is a science centre and anthropology museum which opened on 20 December 2014 in Lyon, France. Jakob + Macfarlane Architects , Quai Rambaud, Lyon, France , 2005-2011 The project is designed as a simple orthogonal « cube » into which a giant hole is carved, responding to necessities of light, air movement and views. Peter Zumthor- Kunsthaus Bregenz (1997) - Bregenz, Austria “The art museum stands in the light of Lake Constance. It is made of glass and steel and a cast concrete stone mass which endows the interior of the building with texture and spatial composition. From the outside, the building looks like a lamp. It absorbs the changing light of the sky, the haze of the lake, it reflects light and colour and gives an intimation of its inner life according to the angle of vision, the daylight and the weather.” – Peter Zumthor Peter Zumthor (born 26 April 1943) is a Swiss architect and winner of the 2009 Pritzker Prize and 2013 RIBA Royal Gold Medal. Along with Therme Vals, the Kunsthaus Bregenz put Peter Zumthor at the forefront of architectural minimalism, as well as a dominant creative force in the discipline of architecture.
