“I’ve been feeling lightheaded since I lost enough weight to fit back in my skin.” I imagine this in reverse. Post-coma Jon was so thin and starved that he was barely himself. He was stumbling around living off of the scraps of already digested fear.

“While I whittle my bones until I’m brittle, am I pretty now?” This is representative of how Jon starves himself of fear/statements after Basira, Melanie, and Daisy find out. He realizes his mistake, and no matter how hungry he is, he still chooses to do what is right. He knows it won’t make his co-workers approve of him, so I interpret it as something that Jon does for himself, out of concern for his humanity.

“No, I know that I’m wrong, but I love how you’re on my side when I cross that line.” Jon trusts that Martin will stay with him regardless of how much wrong he does, because they are deeply codependent.

Ghosting

Fuck. This is S4 Martin.

“I’ve been ghosting along, Ghost in the world, ghost with no home.” Here’s some shitty symbolism— Martin now has the ability to make himself disappear! Thanks I hate it. Martin has “no home” because his mother died, he accepted Jon as being dead, and he isolated himself from everyone. He has become a ghost, basically.

“And this is why I have decided to leave your house and home unhaunted, you don’t need poltergeists for sidekicks.” This is Martin avoiding Jon. He’s trying to keep Jon safe so he resigns as Jon’s assistant. 

“And this is why I have decided to pull these old white sheets from my head, I’ll leave them folded neat and tidy so that you’ll know I’m out of hiding.” This is representative of Martin giving up the Lonely for Jon. The white sheets are equal to the comfort that being Alone gives him, and he’s folding it up and making himself available for Jon out of love.

By eleven o’clock, it’s all gone to hell. A few boys came into the shop demanding Martin to let them have “the girl” on the piercer list do their ears. Jon can feel the headache coming on when they point to him. God, he needs to get Elias to change his photo on the site. He makes a note of it mentally.

To Martin’s credit, he looks terribly confused. “I think you must have the wrong store? None of our piercers are women.”

The teenagers exchange a glance. “She’s right there, mate. Are you slow?” 

They point to Jon.

Jon is not happy about this.

“That’s… that’s Jon. He’s not a woman, but I’m sure he can still do your piercings.” Martin is clearly trying to quash a giggle.

Jon scowls and turns to face them. The stubble on his sharp chin clearly dashes their hopes, and the boys turn pale, rushing to escape.

“At least they think you’re pretty?” Martin tries. 

The smaller man scoffs. “It’s hardly a compliment from pubescent boys. I’m an adult man, Martin.”

Ruler of Everything

“Every end of the time is another begun… I’m the ruler of everything in the end.” Even after Jonah’s natural life fades out and he chooses a new host, he enters each new era with what I can only call “grace”. I think that he is able to do this because he believes that the events of the time don’t actually matter because he will eventually destroy it all with the apocalypse.

“I saw you slobber over clovers on the side of the hill.” Elias watches Jon hungering desperately for fear, salivating over scraps. For Elias, this is progress and he is delighted. He doesn’t care that Jon is starving and suffering; it’s all for his own cause.

“I’ve been living a lie, metamorphical scheme.” Jonah’s body switching is unknown to the Archives until MAG159. He lives the lie of Elias in an unfamiliar body.

“Do I need it? Am I under control?” Jon can feel the Eye pushing him to take statements and he is struggling to decide if he genuinely needs it or if it’s just his own hunger telling him that.

“‘I can make you feel alive!’ I know, but do I need it to survive?” This is Jon’s internal dialogue about taking statements. He knows it’s wrong, but it makes him feel so alive and satiated. He needs to feed his god before it feeds on him, but the humanity in him doesn’t want him to. Jon feels like he is going to die, but he resists regardless. This is one of the reasons I love Jon. He acknowledges how wrong it was of him to take statements but he still wants more. Jon is deeply flawed and fundamentally messed up but after he is caught, he really does try his absolute best to get on the right track.
