Hi there! I love your little tutorial/diagram on drawing goats… That detail about the heads being concave or convex is really interesting.

I looked at my alpacas, they have a similar thing going on, mostly their heads are concave but a few of ours are a little on the convex / “Roman” side.

Always great to keep observing! Helps so much when drawing for sure.

I know with goats it's mainly because there are two primary origin sources for the breeds commonly seen in US dairy - Swiss breeds hailing from around the Swiss Alps and surrounding area and others from various parts of Africa and the Middle East.

The Swiss breeds were bred to deal more with cold climates, and while used for meat and other resources dairy was the main goal.

The African and Middle Eastern breeds had to deal more with the heat, so naturally they were selected to have longer ears to help keep cool in the hot sun. These goats are also less specialized in dairy and more jack-of-all-trades with equal use for dairy, meat, leather or fiber.

The Swiss breeds would suffer from frostbite during the harsh winters so they were instead selectively bred to try and mitigate this risk by kidding goats with smaller and smaller ears. As a result, their ears are less heavy and tend to stick out to the side or are entirely erect.

But it's almost always (aside from hybridizing two distinct breeds) erect ears = that concave nose shape, and droopy long ears = roman or convex nose.

My only guess is that the nose shape may have something to do with the intake of air and depending on the climate, one shape is better suited for dealing with cold and one for heat - how or why, I don't really know. But it could be any possible phenotypical link tied to the ears.

Thinking out loud now, maybe it has something to do with small differences in their sinuses? That's really the only connection I can think of between nose and ears lol

I will absolutely have to spend some time looking more into the face shapes of llamas and alpacas now 👀
