adding a ftm!gerry headcanon two weeks later:

gerry figured out he was trans pretty early on in his life and picked the first masculine name he could think of that he sort of liked (mcr had not been formed yet, but if it had, the name probably would have come from gerard way and he would have been so embarrassed about that later).

his mother was actually okay with the whole thing—she really didn’t care as long as her “heir” was able to carry on her work—and she never messed up, even going so far as to help him change his name legally. then she started throwing it at him like a projectile weapon, so he grew to hate it. but it was already legally changed and he was dealing with a lot worse stuff at that point, so what can you do except wait 20 years until after you’re dead to tell your almost-boss’s successor to call you a nickname, right?

diversity win: a dead guy in a book is trans and gay!

i love the magnus archives because literally anyone can be shipped together and not only does it work most of the time, it’s also no big deal to most of the fandom.

you can pair jon with just about anyone and the reactions will usually be “huh, that’s cool”. jonmartin? obviously. jontim? tragic but good. jonsasha? lots of potential. jonelias? concerning but very good anyway. all of those combined into polyarchives? wonderful. jondaisy? love their bond in s4. jongeorgie? they could make it work again. jongerry? they could have been great. jonmichael? sure, why not. jonhelen? there was defo tension there.

that and ships like doorkeay and terminal velocity where the characters have never interacted with each other and still work are great, and also making those four a massive polycule is great too (add jon in the mix too, why not). works for the other avatars as well, like jane/nikola or nikola/jude. even gertrude with anyone from her time works, like agnes, leitner, adelard, emma, hell even mary! same goes for jonah and his series of spooky lovers.

it’s fascinating to me. the potential of these characters is so immense that you can do literally anything you want with them and it’ll work not sure whether that’s a good or bad thing writing-wise but i like it, and everyone recognizes and respects it!

also it helps that most of them don’t have confirmed sexualities, so they’re all queer until proven straight lol
