Hamilton (2020)
Tumblr media
I know Hamilton already has fans but until I saw this live recording of the 2015 musical, I wasn’t among them. Now, I see what the big deal is. While no film can quite capture the energy of a live performance, this presentation gives you a view and an experience no box-office seat could match. Packed with terrific songs, excellent performances, and impressive visuals, you’ll want to watch it over and over.
In 1776, 19-year-old Alexander Hamilton (Lin-Manuel Miranda) arrives in New York City. There, he quickly makes a name for himself despite his empty pockets and lowly status as an orphaned immigrant from the Caribbean. His wit and unquenchable desire for more leads him to greatness and setup his downfall. The film - divided into two acts - follows his career as the aide-de-camp to General George Washington (Christopher Jackson), the first Secretary of the Treasury, his marriage to Eliza Schuyler (Phillipa Soo), personal tragedies, and his eventual death.
At 160 minutes, Hamilton can seem intimidating but don't worry. It includes a handy-dandy intermission during which you can stretch your legs. Theoretically, you could also stop it there and resume play at a later time. I doubt you'll want to. Once Hamilton gets going, you don’t want it to stop. This movie is no ordinary history lesson. Packed with wall-to-wall songs inspired by modern genres like hip hop, R&B, pop, and soul, the plot moves quickly through eras and events you’re familiar with (even if all you have is a rudimentary knowledge of American history) while revealing "new" events. Many of the lyrics come in so fast you’ll struggle to keep up but the performances fill in the gaps. You can always tell who’s who, what’s going on, and most importantly, what it means to Alexander Hamilton. He’s the focus of the story, a complicated person we’ve not had the chance to meet until now.
Another modern aspect is the cast. Normally I’d raise an eyebrow at the willy-nilly swapping of real-life people’s races - it'd be doubly uncomfortable considering we see extremely racist real-life people morphed into something they weren't… that rule doesn’t apply here. This is a movie and a play too, and plays exist in a different kind of reality. A staircase from which King George III (Jonathan Groff) descends is a symbol of much more. A couple of chairs transports us from a port to a bar. An actor playing double roles is just an opportunity to see them again. You won’t have to use your imagination as much as you’re used to, however. This is a first-rate production brilliantly directed by Thomas Kail. There are many interesting and novel choices made throughout, more than enough to make you overlook the few points where the camera could’ve been slightly better positioned. There are few edits and when they are used, they pack a punch.
Even without the marvelous cast, Hamilton would be a sight to behold. The performers’ arresting voices and the songs elevates this to a level that may have some people thinking they needn’t bother with a live performance. Or maybe they’ll see this as a way to watch and re-watch the show enough times to memorize all of the tunes - there’s no way you could pick just one favorite. When you see the cast of Hamilton bow, the o-screen audience won’t be the only one getting up to cheer. (January 16, 2021)

Silence is not enough.
After an opening flashback to the day of the alien invasion this one picks up almost right where the last one left off. The Abbotts move on from their farm, destroyed in the first one, making it to a nearby foundry; where neighbor Emmett has taken up residency. While an injury and need for supplies stalls Evelyn, Marcus and the baby, Regan and a reluctant Emmett go in search of the song thats being broadcast on the radio. My Only notes for this movie state: “all that backstory👌🏼“ and “that first scene in the store - omg - signs” so I must’ve been more interested in the movie than taking any notes (even on a rewatch) 😆🤦🏼‍♀️. Once again I thought it did a really really good job of integrating sound and letting the audience hear from different perspectives. #MillicentSimmonds did a phenomenal job yet again, and I’m glad Emmett chose to help her Regan instead of just bringing her back to her family. Their battle with the group in the marina was scary! but they worked so well together to get out of it! Them finally reaching the origin of the song, the further backstory they get there, and how this film ends seem like things that could definitely happen if this were to ever happen in real life — always check they’re all taken care of and “double tap” if needed! Also - was there Absolutely no where else they could’ve hidden in that foundry? If you could do the towel, why not some tubes for breathing?! But overall I really liked this one and am curious to see where a third one would go with this story. #drama #horror #scifi #thriller #aliens #ssmovieof2021 #EmilyBlunt #NoahJupe #CillianMurphy #DjimonHounsou #OkierieteOnaodowan #ScootMcNairy

Hamilton (2020)
Tumblr media
It’s been just a little over a month since I saw Hamilton and I’m reviewing it again. A friend insisted, even though we’d both seen it already. You can tell why. This one of the best live stage recordings I’ve seen. The story is engaging, the writing tight and the direction is filled with interesting choices.
The film - divided into two acts - follows his career as the aide-de-camp to General George Washington (Christopher Jackson), the first Secretary of the Treasury, his marriage to Eliza Schuyler (Phillipa Soo) and his eventual death.
Inspired by the 2004 biography Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow, this musical takes numerous liberties but not the kind you’d expect. Sometimes, you’ve got to research and really think about what portions of history were altered on the way to the screen. Here, it’s obvious. George Washington, Aaron Burr, Hercules Mulligan, James Madison, and other historical figures are played by Black actors. While it complicates the question of race-swapping in film, this choice also shows that people of all races contributed to the creation of the United States and this specific cast is integral to this story. The music is inspired by hip hop, R&B, soul, and other genres you’d traditionally associate with actors of color. There is no story without the music, there would be no music without these performers, there would be no America without these characters. Movie-wise, it works.
I just emphasized the importance of the songs so this may sound contradictory but hear me out. The numbers are wall-to-wall. There’s hardly any “dialogue” but if you stripped away the music and dancing, you’d still have a great story filled with complex, three-dimensional characters. There’s drama aplenty, political intrigue, love triangles, action, betrayal, and comedy weaved throughout, making this the best kind of musical there is: one that's a story first.
You can feel the passion. Lin-Manuel Miranda delivers a strong performance. The fact he also wrote the music and story makes it clear how much he wanted this to be a success. Is he the best in this movie? Maybe not. Jonathan Groff as King George III is a delight whenever he appears. Daveed Diggs steals the show in all of his scenes, making you glad he (and many others) plays dual roles. Normally, that’d be distracting but this isn’t a movie - not really - it’s a play shot like a movie, complete with closeups and dynamic camera movements - partially provided by the rotating stage, which director Thomas Kail makes excellent use of.
In terms of criticism, there are a few. Certain characters (Hamilton’s daughter, his wife Angelica’s youngest sister) are mentioned but so absent they should’ve been omitted. There's also the disconnect you feel whenever slavery is mentioned. We’re talking about minor issues considering the quality of the writing and the numerous catchy songs. Certain lyrics come back several times throughout and each time, the words mean something new because of how the characters have developed.
Even before this film came out, it felt like so many people were talking about Hamilton and for good reason.  The hype is real. (February 19, 2021)
