Highlights from a new ABCNews wire story ~ “Venom: Let There Be Carnage,” which [opens] Friday, extends what may be the oddest superhero series around. The dominant conflict is less about world saving and more about a very odd couple cohering in one body. And given that the two lead parts are played by the same actor, it’s the comic-book film most centered on an actor’s freewheeling performance. Tom Hardy: “What’s thrilling is to be able to delve through the human psyche and the paradox of the human condition and play them in a farcical, superhero action thriller. The masks of Eddie Brock and Venom are larger than life, but they’re ultimately two sides of the same coin.” “When it came out, critics didn’t like it -- which is fair enough -- and the audience did like it. It did rather well, enough for Sony to make another one. We had to have a debrief and a wash up and say: What worked here? What didn’t work? What can we do better?” “Putting your hat in the ring is a logical step. We asked Sony, Kelly [Marcel] and I, if we could have a shot at pitching the second movie. And they said ‘Of course.’” On set, Hardy typically retreats to a corner to record his Venom lines, which are enhanced with a pitch-modulator. Then, while Hardy performs as Brock, Venom’s lines are played through an earpiece. Director #AndySerkis calls Hardy’s system “mesmeric” to watch. To Hardy, acting against himself has become a familiar process. TH: “I’ve gotten used to seeing myself as a piece of meat and observing myself from outside as: What do I want to do with my vehicle? OK, Tom’s not working properly. What’s not working?” “It may seem schizophrenic and I do appreciate that I do look mad when I’m doing it. The world has enough superheroes. Embrace your inner anti-hero. Alien symbiote Venom comes to earth and teams up with journalist Eddie Brock, together they fight another symbiote, Riot, bonded with Carlton Drake, before more symbiotes can be brought to earth. To me, Venom was just Spider-Man in a black suit (omg that sounds terrible🤦🏼‍♀️), like that’s all I remember about him from watching the cartoon as a kid, I don’t think I even realized he made an appearance in the third Tobey Maguire Spider-Man film (though #TomHardy > Topher Grace.) That being said, I do definitely wish I read more comics with each super hero/comic book movie that comes out or that I see. Talking to people who’ve actually read the comics/know Venom’s history/origins - this wasn’t accurate at all, and could definitely have used more Spider-Man; though Brock/Venom were great (the physicality of this role for Hardy - omg) and Venom was funny. Both symbiotes reminded me of the T-1000 and Michelle Williams seemed to act past Hardy, like she was in a different movie - though that little bit where she was Venom was nice. I remember there being some cool scenes/action from Riot at the Life Foundation/the rocket launch. That fight at the end - oh boy. Brilliant. Bad. And a little Mad. The DeVil wears Dalmation. The origin story of Cruella (duh). Though the original animated feature (featuring an ADULT Cruella) came out in 1961, this one is set in 60s/70s London (the sets, props, music and costumes were all fantastic) and #EmmaStone and #EnmaThompson were both perfect as Estella and The Baroness respectively. It’s like a Devil Wears Prada if Andi had become the thing she sought to destroy, or if that movie and Oceans 8 had a baby. And though it’s a well done origin story, did it have to be Cruella? (I mean because Disney made it, yes, apparently) did we need to know Cruella’s backstory? Especially when, for me, it left such a gap from where this one ends to where the original began (even with the little connetions to the original - seeing Anita and Estella at school, Roger being The Baroness’ lawyer, Estella partnering up with Horace and Jasper (who in the original were brothers?), Estella giving Anita and Roger dalmation puppies, her car…) That all being said, I liked it more than I expected. The wardrobe department hit it out of the park (though that one outfit they let The Duchess wear to the London Gala? Ew.), and Estella’s scheme with that signature dress - wowza; also her plan at the end, ooohhhmmmyyygawd, all the work that went into both, holy crap - both were genius.
